[Q] Motorola Atrix-Unlocking & Rooting - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Hello!
Okay so i am new to the forum and i hope im posting this to the right place! so i am not a total noob to this type of stuff but i recently got the Atrix 4G and am having a HECK of a time doing what i need (not sure if i will get shut down, but in short i want to be able to use the wifi hot spot tethering running on straight talk)
i have read through post after post and have tried every variation on this site and about 3 others for root my phone but none seem to work... It is my understanding that i need to unlock the boot loader in order to root this phone but all of the boot loader unlocks dont work.
Here is my phone info:
Model: MB860
Android: 2.3.6
Kernel verson: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: 4.5.141
if anyone is willing and capable i will be very appreciative of any help!

Rooting is for getting extra access to your phone that require such rights to do so. Unlocking is needed for installing custom ROMS.
If you are looking for a way to root your phone, then check out "Doomlord's method". I don't have the link handy, but just Google "Doomlord root Atrix" and take the first result...

The best way..works also on 2.3.6

New root method!

Christ has risen!
To all of you that are tired of the long, not so simple way to root your Optimus One, I just came across this. Although it says it's for gingerbread, it worked for me. I'm using original 2.2.1 firmware.
Hope you're gonna find this useful!
hi cristi_bostan2005,
thanks for the information. I have tried and it also work with Android Version 2.2.2, software version v10f-FEB-24-2011
Does this mean no need of downgrading any more to install custom roms? Also is it safe to use it on our phone?
this is great news, though I'm still on v10b
where is detail i m not able to see it
thanks for this i rooted my phone using this was running froyo 2.2.2 with out the requirement of downgrade was able to root the phone successfully
? I am not seeing any info regarding app...what is the method?
For those that didn't see the link, here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
It's an app, similar to z4root that can root your phone, without you needing to downgrade as before. It's very simple.
Follow the link, download the latest apk to your phone, install it, run it and that's it!

How many minutes did it take to root the phone? Mine is taking forever... :-S
not very long... about 30 seconds to 1 minute i think ??
Going to reboot and try again then.
but:
Some important things to know:
- You must have USB debugging enabled on your device
- You need to have an SD card (formatted and) inserted
- The APK must be install to device, NOT SD card
- The exploit may take a while to run, but not more than 10 minutes, if it does, get me a logcat, and reboot the device
- Always reboot between root attempts!
- While (temporary?) root access may be attained, due to locked bootloaders, efuses, S-ON, and whatnot this may still not work on your device
- The GingerBreak exploit should not be used to attain temproot and continue using the device. It fscks vold, you do not want to be running like that. You want to reboot! So if the root doesn't stick, you (still) have a problem.
Nope, it wasn't running properly, I waited more than 10 minutes.
I've rebooted and tried to run it again and this time it rooted the phone in less than 30 seconds. It was something that was amiss I guess.
Rooted in few minutes on V10E (2.2.2) Italian No Brand.
is it permanent root? i'm wondering if the phone can still be Unrooted after using this app? sorry for the noob question.

Ok this might seem a stupid question but i am anoyed by the market.
I am with bell canada (quebec) and now i search for great apps in the market but I can't even find appbrain (wich I had on my Samsung Galaxy S)
If i Root my Motorola Atrix (MB860 Version 2.2.2) Will I be able to see all apps in the market?
I'm afraid to Brick my phone
Thanks!
You know this isn't really a stupid question. I have noticed when going from rom to rom, that search results in the market are different. Kinda strange lol

To tell the truth,to the best of my knowledge, there is no safe or easy way. Just read,read....read some more, until you think you got it,then go for it. The best guide your gonna find is always located in the stickys. As far as best rom, some can throw opinions, but a rom always come down to what the users prefer. Like I said, reading and reading is the best way to go.

Why dont you hang on tight a few more weeks. I have an AT&T version (which I bought and unlocked to put on Telus), and I installed the 2.3 Gingerbread update and I have that app installed on my Atrix. Honestly, the new market looks great. Have you got the update to that yet? If it hasn't updated from the market google "android market update" and you will find it. It makes things a lot easier to navigate.
Can anyone help with this issue

Update Bump with much grander detail to my problem
Go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
In the first post there is a link to Brief Mobile's Beginner's Guide. It is very similar to what you used but apparently the .sbf is different.
Once you have an unlocked bootlader you can take care of both the rooting and the webtop over HDMI hack with a custom ROM. I'm using Alien Build #4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537) and is working great. Some people report problems with the Alien theme, but you can use the ROM without the theme and still get the root and webtop hack along with some other goodies.
You will first need to install CWM. You can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
Then just boot into recovery and install the Alien zip.
Any problems you have are probably already solved in the Alien thread.

Read through the PUDDING (the first one I suggested) and the Alien ROM threads.. They're long but you'll probably find a solution there..
Also post what you're doing step by step and exactly when are you getting which error. You must be missing some step or doing something wrong because the whole process should be really easy, specially with an AT&T phone.

Root 2.3.6

Whats the status on it? anyone has done it succesfully?

I'm sorry that I don't have an answer to your question, but what is new that's in 2.3.6? I have 2.3.5, but I am curious.

v2.3.6
Released on 2 September 2011, this version fixed a voice search bug. The 2.3.6 update had the side-effect of impairing the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality of many Canadian Nexus S phones. Google acknowledged this problem and fixed it in late September

Pretty sure superoneclick will do it easily. There's other threads around here about rooting these devices that should have any info you need.

supeoneclick 2.3.3. doesn't work on stock 2.3.6 EU G70 rom
It depends on whether you want to keep the stock kernel or not. If not, you can flash a custom kernel first and then root it by say zegrush.
Actually I have just rooted the new 2.3.6 EU rom this way.
I have rooted it successfully.
It worked for me

I've tried everything, and still no luck.
The usb is in developer mode, I tried with dismounted sd card, I removed the sd card completely, turned off the firewall and the virus scanner, reseted the device, removed all the extra programs, changed the usb port on my pc. The cable is good.
The zerg rush runs every time, than superoneclick is stuck at the waiting for the device step, but nothing happens.
Tried all the steps in several combinations, several times, but no luck.
There is another rooting method in the developer forum. It runs fine but after it finished, the device is still not rooted.
Device: JP-G70

Using DoomLorD's Easy Rooting Toolkit 4.0, I was able to root my device on 2.3.6 successfully; I'm using an SGP 4.0 Model YP-G1.
Worked the first time; I suggest trying that method rather than SuperOneClick (I had problems with it when I first got my SGP)
--Trae
Thanks for the help, but it didn't help. I tried a factory reset too, but still no luck.
It seems that the application tells me that there is not enough space on system partition. But without root access, I think there is nothing I can do.

A few questions before I root

Hello again all, I just have a few questions about rooting my sprint gn2 before i get started. I have found several instructional guides through xda (thanks to all that post them would be lost without ya!) however i am concerned because i am running the new updated version that some of these methods may cause me some issues. I suppose my question is most of these guides were made quite some time ago, and this update has only been around a few months now, is it safe to follow for example this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9zF6x1MURM&hd=1&list=SPwCVKEYxr_z7FBQYT32dbYw_kdSJmSDH2Do I need to revert back to a prior update somehow? I have searched for a few hours now and there does not seem to be much information on rooting the device after the latest update. Looking forward to running custom roms thanks for the help.
PS if there is anything you think i should know before starting feel free to chime in i will definitely send a thanks your way!
PSS I see that 4.3 locks down the bootloader completely.... this is bull****...... Anyone know whether the phone i get through insurance when i "break" my phone would come loaded with 4.3 as well?

That I'm not sure. You would no longer have unlocked bootloader and I always thought the two ways to have custom recovery were if bootloader was unlocked or via a safestrap method. You would have root so I'd check and see if recoveries exist for sprint note ii after this root method of 4.3
I believe you would be unable to flash a new rom/kernel as they require a custom recovery to do so, and with out a unlocked boot loader you wouldn't be able to get a custom recovery.
