Hi all,
I currently own a HTC Wildfire and have squeezed everything out of it by rooting/roms/root apps etc. So I know the benefits of rooting and used it on my HTC mainly to speed it up (it only has a 528mhz cpu, no gpu so things stock are pretty slow ) and remove the HTC crap apps. Now, as the Prime is already so fast and can handle almost anything, I wonder if there is any benefit of installing a custom ROM on it. I'm surely going to root it when I get it (to OC and f.e. Titanium Backup), but why a custom ROM when ASUS updates the Prime often enough? And one other thing, what is the size of the dev community concerning the prime. The wildfire had a really large community with lots of Rom's, but I obviously don't know about this Transformer.
Thanks in advance
Why? Simply to make a fast prime even Faster.

I was already planning to do so But what about the ROM's. Do they actually add any extra functionality that is not present in the stock rom?

yes they do. just head over to developement section and look at the features list for each rom. there is also another feature packed rom, AOKP, but its not hosted on this site anymore. its on another forum. just Google for it and you should be able to find it. We also have custom kernels that adds alot of kernel optimization like memory tweaks, 1.8Ghz overclock, and other things. Motley & Shaky have custom kernels in prime developement section. just head over there and check out those feature lists also. Tons of improvements made over stock kernel.
There are also some Cornerstone ROMs available, which give you a completely new experience and definitely extend the Android tablet experience.
Root ver.21 with unlocked Bootloader
Hello,
i'm a new tf201 user and was be able to make CWM 5.8.2.0 after unlocked the Bootloader without to root the transformer Prime. Now, i don't know how to root it, because the update is up to day ver.21.
I read always to downgrade to Version 15 or 17, and then root and upgrade to version 21, but on a tf201 with locked Bootloader. What can i do with an unlocked Bootloader?

if you already unlocked, you don't even need to use conventional methods of rooting. Just flash anyone of the custom roms available as all of them have root built into them. If you want a stock rom just rooted, there's a custom one for that also that all you have to do is flash it. Whatever you do, don't try to flash Asus official roms from their website. Only flash custom roms from here or another site.
So now that you're unlocked , you have a choice of flashing a rooted, plain stock rom. no changes other than root. Or you can flash any one of the custom roms here. which all have root built into them. just make sure to read up on all of them and how to properly install.
edit: i just noticed you said you have CWM and unlocked. You only can flash CWM if you're already rooted and unlocked. Installing CWM app is does not mean you flashed CWM recovery. You have to do that within the app. then you power down and boot into recovery to make sure it worked. unlocking the prime wont make you lose root. Install an app called "root checker" from the marketplace. Its free and will let you know if you're still rooted or not.

Well, when i start the display shows "unlocked Bootloader" and if i press volume down and power, i get the CWM 5.8.2.0. Then i can navigate to choose zip and i see the sd-card. But on the root checker, i get the message "no Rooted". Well, first of all, thanks for your kindness.
This afternoon I download the ROM you mention, and proof that he takes it. We comment on the result.

no one really needs to do it. Its a choice whether you want to or not. its already been well explained as to why people do so.
So in short, if you want to try custom roms/kernels that run better than stock rom and have features & optimization not found on stock, then you need to root, then unlock, then install CWM , then flash recovery from within that app, then flash rom/kernel of your choice.
Some roms change up the look and feel of the tablet, for the better of course. some add functionality benefits you will never see on a stock rom.

resell value?
need advice!
do you guys think that unlocking the prime will reduce its resell value?
I've always unlocked devices but I've always reverted them to their original state before selling them. it seems once unlocked, OTA's won't be possible anymore. Do you think instaling a stock-like rom will do the job?
I haven't seen anyone mention this fact about unlocking and I thought this thread is the appropriate one.
Thanks for your input everyone!
Resale only matters in terms of value if there's an active warranty on the device or not. If there isn't, then it's probably going to INCREASE the resale value if you move off the stock ROM and onto a "Stock like" (Primalicious, Virtuous Prime, etc), along with a proper recovery setup, on account of the fact that once set up in such a manner, it requires gold standard stupidity to brick the device.
That said, if it -does- still have a working warranty and you've not unlocked the bootloader, it's generally considered good for the value of the prime to not fiddle with it (stock primes are getting RMA'd with increasing frequency, word around the campfire is that the .21 update has caused a lot more hassle than it ever fixed).
I'm somewhat wondering if ASUS may end up recalling the original primes and replacing them / refurbishing them up to C4 spec on the house, regardless of bootloader status, as the mess with WiFi and Bluetooth seems a bit too widespread.

i would like to unlock my tp, but every time i open the Q&A section here all i see is a bunch of questions about bricked primes, so i'm a bit reluctant. i'm quite skilled in modding on my lg optimus 2x, but is modding on the tp a bit different? is it really so dangerous? all i want is overclocking and a good rom, which may also increase wifi performance, if possible.
Just use the official Asus unlock tool. It's a one-click process.

I know it's not so difficult to unlock, what i mean is flashing, using the recovery band so on is in a way different from my lg 2x.

If you just wanted to overclock, you can use EZoverclock on a locked bootloader ... just need Root.
Does it really work? It means that prime's stock kernel already supports overclocking..

It does not support overclocking. If you read the thread, they said that the stock kernel has support for up to 1.6GHz and has the files required by it, however it has been disabled. The app only re-enables the higher clocks.
Wonderful. However i have to have root, and the only method is downgrading from .21 to .15, i would like to have an easier way, so for the moment i will wait. And about my other question, is the way of using the custom recovery on TP different from phones like lg 2x? I see you have an optimus 3D, so they should be similar

I cannot say since I'm having problems unlocking the Prime. Some unknown error occurred. Tried everything - soft reset, hard reset, cold boot etc, nothing works. So I'm still stuck on locked Prime for now.
Did you try to reinstall the whole firmware? Maybe you can downgrade to .15 and then gain root access, unlock and install the recovery by using vipermod tool. Would it be possible?

Tried that too. Still didn't work. Not sure if it's a problem on my end or a problem at Asus' end.
Received my Prime today and so far I love it. I couldn't help rooting it and unlocking it, so where do I go from now?
How do I go about installing say Clockworkmod, and do I need it to install custom ROMs? I've read about Androidroot's bootloader, but I don't wanna install it. Seems a bit too dangerous for me to even attempt, especially on a device that's only a few hours old (like 10h).
EDIT: Think I'll go with TeamEOS 3 Jellybean builds.
hi there,
for me the main reason to root and unlock my prime was to run linux on it, using it as allday work machine.
first step was to use a chroot environment under android, second was to try the port of lilstevie.
i think you only need the changed bootloader for that kind of things, otherwise only unlock the device using the
asus tool, and afterwards root it (installing the su apk) by any method around.
for custom roms, you don't have to use one, but they sometimes have cool additional features
hope that gives you a little expression.

Hi!
Before the OTA jelly bean upgrade i had rooted my tablet using DebugfsRoot primarily for the reason that i wanted to use my PS3 controller with the tab.
Everything went good and i had a blast, then the OTA upgrade came. I was really stocked to try out jelly bean so i decided to take the upgrade even though i knew it would break my root (i was thinking there will probably be another way to root again in a few weeks).
I later cleared the tablets memory and it's SD-card to get a smoother experience on JB.
So here i am, jelly bean and not rooted. I've begun researching how to get my root back and from what I've gathered i need to:
unlock the bootloader,
downgrade to ISC,
root,
save the root,
upgrade to jelly bean,
recover the root.
That's a lot of steps for someone who has only rooted using the automated tool, and to be honest it scared me a little.
I just wanted to know if there is any other (preferably easier) way and if i can lock the bootloader after I've unlocked it (since the warranty goes away).
If there isn't any easier way, does anyone of you know a step-by-step guide i can follow?
Thanks,
Tallkotten

You cannot downgrade to ICS unless you did nvflash while on ICS which you haven't.
Your process would be, unlock bootloader, install TWRP recovery, flash custom jellybean rom with root built in.

Why is it that i cant just unlock bootloader and then root? Do i really need to swap roms?

Well u can unlock, flash twrp and then just flash a root zip in TWRP but that is no less steps than flashing the rom and you have none of the speed improvements. The reason most people unlock is to install the custom rom because it is far faster than stock but if that's what you want to do so be it

Once you are unlocked you cannot relock and your warranty is void.

Some observations. I am not sure what the actual percentage is but from what I have seen most of the people who have sent their prime in for warranty work have gotten back a prime that can not be unlocked. I am pretty sure that if I got green camera or something of that nature I would just live with it or repair it myself. If and when ASUS releases a 4.2 update it will be an improvement to the stock os that will still not bring stock os on locked prime to a fraction of the speed and productivity available on an unlocked prime using a custom rom. Further anything asus releases will be available within the week with improvements by devs for unlocked primes. The warranty on the prime is for people who have the explicit goal to keep the tablet mediocre at best.

Will there ever be a way to root JB without unlock the Prime or is that technically impossible?

So much time passed and nobody answered this important question.
Hello XDA members.
I am an iOS user who recently started using my Asus Transformer tf-201 which was gifted.
I know quite a bit on unlocking and jailbreaking an iPhone but Android is very new to me.
Before i ask you guys for help, i have searched the forum quite a bit to understand the complexities of Unlocking and Rooting. So please go easy on me
My tf-201 is running build number JRO03C.WW_epad-10.4.2.18-20121122
I want to root my device without bricking. So how do i do it?
The forum has a lot of bits and pieces of information so its really hard for me to step further
Can anybody assist me to root my ft-201?
Many people have said you need to Unlock but the unlock tool on Asus website is not for the firmware i am using.
If in case i can unlock, post that how should i go about?
Which firmware should i install?
If incase Asus releases new firmware can i update it?
Unlocked
Waiting for some desperate help and getting none, i went ahead and unlocked my tf201.
Now how should i go about? NVFlash?
I want to root my device

since you are already on the jellybean bootloader and unlocked you can not do nvflash but dont worry about that whats done is done. there is no known method of rooting the prime once upgraded to jellybean without unlocking. the most important thing to prevent bricks is that you know not to ever install CWM because its not supported and dont install TWRP recovery for ICS because you are past that now. This leaves you basically one option if you want to root. you need to install TWRP for Jellybean and then install a pre rooted rom. I obviously suggest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827 because it is the fastest and smoothest rom.

The alterations to the ui bits as you call them in androwook rom are options in the aroma installer. there are none that are mandatory. anyway I dont know what is in the urkle rom. the important part is the use of the clemsyn kernel. It by and large solves the IO issues that cause lags in the prime. The clemsyn kernel is only for stock based roms.
if you want it bare try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911024

Because of the MAC-address-mismatch I was unable to unlock my TF201 using the ASUS unlock-tool. My prime was updated from 9.4.x by Wistron (ASUS-partner) up to STOCK 10.4.2.18 during a RMA without asking. Now ASUS accepted that their partner made a mistake by updating the prime to a (for me) unusable firmware. They told me to RMA the prime back to let them do the unlock for me (for free - thanks to the great ASUS-customer support).
Do you know which version of TWRP I can use as soon as I've installed the "HB-4.2.1-bootloader & recovery"?
The lowest version I ever can use from now on (f.e.) is the one inside the "Downgrade Hairybean 4.1.1 Bootloader & Recovery.zip"-package?
Would it be possible to install the nightly CyanogenMOD-10 onto my tablet? (I think they still are using CWM)
[EDIT]
CM10 and CM10.1 (unofficial) are using TWRP too...
CM10 uses ICS-TWRP so that I think I can't use CM10!
[/EDIT]
The reason why I'm asking about installing CM10 is that I want to try some firmwares and (thanks to Wistron) I am a bit confused and don't want to brick my tablet.
Thanks in advance & regards,
Roy
How can I unlock the bootloader on 10.4.2.18??
Hey guys,
First of i'm not sure if this is a appropriate thread to ask this, if not i'm sorry and will move/remove it.
Anyways it's been awhile since i've been in the android scene and xda in general, had an iphone for about a year or two and just recently got my Z2:victory: so i'm back but things changed a little and i need a little info if anyone can help,
Basically i'm looking to flash [Xperia Z2] DooMKernel v09 kernel but i read it requires an unlocked bootloader... so basically i need to know if my bootloaders unlocked now that i flashed recovery (check signature) (Does flashing recovery unlock a bootloader?) and can i just flash the zip?
or do i need to still unlock my bootloader even though i have dual recovery and then flash the kernel?
Your bootloader is still locked, what you did is you installed recovery for locked bootloader.
Do not try to flash custom kernel on locked bootloader, you'll soft brick your phone.
What you need in order to flash custom kernel is to unlock bootloader, but firstly you need to back up your TA keys ( click here )
For more info click HERE (about unlocking)
Proceed carefully!
Regards!
hey thanks for the info, that' clears up everything, I did already backup my TA partition so I guess all I need to do is unlock bootloader then flash the kernel! quick question have you flashed your kernel? I know I read the info an features of it but is there any upside to it on a z2? my device is pretty fast an stable as is, just looking for a reason to flash mine, any further advice you can give me? is it worth it?

As for the side affects, or as you say upside downs, there is no any, not at least that I'm aware of, but as far as I saw it's not compatible with every rom, only with stock as with stock based ones, I mean developer does not guarantee for it's stability if it's being used along with any other rom. I have rooted and flashed recoveries only to use existenz rom. I heard for Doomlord's kernel, that it has "fix" for a video recorder mic, you can control it's sensitivity and it's far more battery friendly.
Ah I see! thanks, think I'll stick with the stock kernel for the time being, I don't have any complaints at the moment with it but if I ever do decide to switch to the doom kernel atleast I know what to do first, I've got one last question though sorry, do I need to unlock my bootloader to flash a custom rom? I don't think I do, I'm pretty sure I don't, but just want to make sure, used to have only low end droid devices back in the day when I used to be here, didn't have things like dual recoveries etc so yeah I'm kind of reading an learning as I'm going along, pretty awesome device though sleek and powerful I've only been doing minor adjustments to the stock rom using xposed modules, haven't used a custom rom as yet but I will soon...

Well, yes and no, LB means its for locked bootloaders and UB means for unlocked bootloaders, search for those to two words when you find the rom which you can flash.
Some roms require unlocking, some do not. All stock based roms usually dont require, but as I told you, it will be stated in Rom's thread name or in OP.
Regards!
Ah! I'll be sure to look out for those, thanks for the valuable info, think that's all I needed to find out. I should be ok from here on out
