[Q] Total wipe for CM7RC1 install? - Motorola Droid X2

Hi- I updated my rooted 2.3.4 Droid X2 about a week ago to CM7RC1 and have been enjoying it since. One thing that surprised me is that the upgrade appeared to have kept certain configurations that I had, such as the custom wallpaper I was using. I had followed the instructions on this site to the letter, which included wiping data and cache and dalvik cache. I would have thought performing those steps would have cleaned any custom configs/settings off the phone?
The reason I ask is that I'm still encountering some unique bugs I had before the upgrade. I'd really like to perform a true wipe and clean install of CM7RC1. I would presume that would include some type of format of my sd card, since there are so many android file structures on there. But I don't see how I could do that since I need the CM7RC1 and Google App zip installs (as well as the patched BSR apk) on the SD card. I'm not even sure I could boot to the BSR I now have on there if I formatted my SD card.
Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Is there a way to do a real system reset with my existing CM7RC1 install? Will the power button + volume down technique really work, or will it keep my custom settings?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks again for any help!

This removes mods too, right?

Yes, if done properly it removes all MODs. It also Formats System and flashes a fresh CM7 build.

I honestly don't think a format of :internal end external sdcards are necessary. Just format the .android_secure folder if you want. What's important is wiping system data and app data. I understand that is what you did but I recommend doing a wipe of data, cache, and DALVIC (which is part of why you were experiencing bugs and the wallpaper was there) before sbfing. I do it again once I install a fresh rom as well just to be safe.

Its certainly not necessary but I think he said something in the first post about wanting to format it.

How to flash [ROM] [CM7] [7/9/11] Trigger Redux over Miui AOSP?

Can someone give me FULL instructions for flashing this coming from Miui AOSP, without Odin? From flashing the Rom to installing the google apps (dont know how to)... I havent flashed a WHILE. Thanks guys
im assuming you have rom manager installed for this and the rom you want installed (trigger redux) is at the root of your micro sd .... once you have those done follow the steps
1. in rom manager hit flash clockworkmod recovery then pick vibrantmtd then pick 3.x.x because we are on gingerbread
2. hit install rom from sd card and find the rom's zip folder and select it afterwords something else will pop up with 3 0ptions, put a check on all 3 (backup rom, wipe data and cache and dalvik cache) then hit install
BY SELECTING WIPE DATA AND CACHE YOUR APPS AND STUFF WILL BE GONE WHEN THE NEW ROM BOOTS UP SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU WANT IS BACKED UP
IF WIPE DATA AND CACHE IS NOT SELECTED THERE IS ONLY A SLIGHT CHANCE THAT YOU WON'T HAVE TO use ODIN!!
http://www.appbrain.com/app/app-backup-reinstall/tw.nicky.AppBackupReinstall
this link has an app that backs up all your apps to your sd card or you can use titanium back up to back up everything
I went from Muiu to redux and what I did is this: (might be overkill but its what I did and everything worked great)
1. Reboot into recovery
2. clear data/factor reset
3. mounts and storage > format system, format data, format cache
4. install zip from sd card > trigger redux
5. install zip from sd card > gapps
6. advanced > wipe dalvic cache, fix permissions
7. reboot
8. let rom boot up and sit for 10 mins and reboot
9. enjoy
That is the correct way ...Guy above ...

[Q]Am I flashing roms and kernals right?

I just want to be 100% sure I am doing this right when it comes to flashing roms and kernals to my evo 3d. I have only flashed once and it was the last update on the evo.
Here is what I can remember
-Back up everything apps and all
-Put zip file on root of memory stick
-Boot into recovery
-Do a factory reset
-Clear cache
-Click install zip from sdcard
-DONE.
Am I missing anything and is this the same for kernals and roms?

Well, what you've got there is pretty accurate for flashing ROMS. The only thing I'd add in there is to create a nandroid backup when you boot into recovery, before doing your factory reset. You also want to wipe dalvik cache along with your cache.
To flash a kernel, you do NOT wipe data (factory reset). Skip on that. For a kernel flash, you only want to wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash the kernel, tehn reboot.
Yea sounds great I usually repeat the wipe process three times just to make.sure.

so when flashing a kernal I do similar to rom
-copy file to root of sd card
-reboot in recovery
-wipe cache and dalvik
-install zip from sd card? or is it update from sd card?
It's install .zip But ya, sounds like your doing it right!
And you don't have to copy the files to the root of the sd card. If you download the roms straight to your phone they will download in your downloads folder. I just leave them there. Twrp gives you a menu where you can pick what folder to flash from.

thank you guys, this site never fails

full format reday for new rom etc.

Evening all ive been using my test phone to try the many various roms etc but its built up a fair bit of junk in it ( see the attached screenshot for a list of all the folders )
What im wanting to know is there a way to completely flatten the SD partion that will get rid of everything there so when the new rom goes on it will be a totally fresh install. I followed these instructions ..
1st You have to know how to ROOT your phone
2nd You have to know how to open your phone in “Recovery Mode”
3rd You have to have d/l and copy the ROM’s .zip file in your SD card
If you don't know how to do those GO : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1055 AND READ....
4th From “Recovery Mode”
A) Choose to “Wipe Data-Factory reset”
B) Then “Wipe cache Partition”
C) Then to “Advanced” “Wipe Dalvic cache”
D) Then if you like from “Mounts - Storage” “Format /cache - /Data - /System”
E) After this back to main and “Install zip from sdcard”
but there were still remmanants of crap left behind. Could i just select everything and hit delete then power down and install as above or is there another way to do it?
thanks in advance
On recovery mode you can go to mounts and storage >> format =) there format sd card or mmc (I got CM9 installed probably other driver names on your device)

Would that then format everything including the new rom zip file. If so How would I then get the zip file across so I could install it?
Format = wipe
Full wipe is format cache format system format data phone will now not boot no OS .
Flash stock rom via Odin
Flash CWM and Root via Odin .
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If you also format SD card all data is wiped .
Copy custom rom zip to sd card .
A step further would be to use one of the kernel cleaning tools on XDA .

Why all the instructions to flash ROMs writes that the new rom should be put on integrated Memory card, not the external SD card?
I tried to make a couple of flash ROMs from external SD card and everything went ok

Provided
One your CWM can access the external sd card not all versions can .
Two not all users have an external sd card .
Bit pointless in the above two cases for instructions to be wrong when putting the file on the internal sd card is never wrong .

Yeah, I thought it was something else in the game, thanks ...

Do the following:
1. Obtain root, see item 1 in my signature and flash the latest CF-Root
2. Make a CWM backup after the phone rebooted
3. Download ARHD 7.0.0 and place it on the external sd card, copy importants folders/files from the internal sdcard to the external sd card.
4. In CWM: do a data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache, in mounts and storage format system, cache and data.
5. Flash ARHD and choose full wipe and backup efs in Aroma, install the rom and tweaks you want and install.
6. Reboot and you`re done

you say you 'failed at the last second' when trying to install CM10... what actually happened?
you say you can access android recovery so I would initially try a factory reset (on the first page of recovery) 'wipe data/factory reset' and see where that gets you
report back if you require any more help :good:

I tried the wipe data/factory reset and all it does is finish up and upon reboot just hangs at the boot screen.
As for what actually happened when it failed, I got the following error
"set_perm: some changes failed"

You could try a fresh install of the CM10 rom that you have installed but first you need to do a full system wipe (go into recovery>select 'mounts and storage'> format the following >>> data, system, osh, preinstall and cache)
What else do you have installed on your sd card (that you can see in Recovery)... if the install fails again you're going to have to go back and instal a rom that you know will work (if you haven't got any on the internal sd card you are going to have to install one)

You're going to have to install it on your phone first. As your not able to start up your phone you are going to have to take your external sd card out of your phone and, using a card reader, install the rom that you want on your external card from your pc and then put it back into your phone and access recovery again.
I would recommend that you do a full system wipe before installing the Rom. After you have done the wipe go to 'install zip from sd card' and instead of selecting 'install zip from internal' just select 'choose zip from sd card' and you should be able to see the rom that you installed on your external card.

If this were me now, I would be trying a stable proven rom like CM7.2 (link here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=olympus)
Repeat the installation process and make sure you're doing a full system wipe first.
Do not install Gapps with rom... let's get your phone working first. (just reread your post... after you've installed the rom your phone should not reboot itself?)
