HTC ignoring tablets ICS-wise - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

UPDATE 9th May, 2012:
As of now, we are planning on going ahead with how many we can on the 15th May, 2012 and then again on the 1st June and then decide further plan. Thought would be a good idea to update the 1st post here:
The following will be the locations where we would voice our concerns:
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/HTC - post in
Facebook HTC USA: http://www.facebook.com/htcusa - post in
Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/htc - tweet
HTC ICS Blog: http://blog.htc.com/2012/03/ics/ - comment
HTC Tell us what you think blog: http://blog.htc.com/2012/04/your-phone-your-thoughts-tell-us-what-you-think/ - comment
HTC Support: http://www.htc.com/us/support/email-support - email them
Also, an online petition has been created for all HTC tablets wanting ICS (Flyer, View and Jetstream) and they also joining in. Link is http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/htc-tablet-users-want-updates/
So, do sign in, spread the word and lets hope for the best. Will post further updates in the thread and in this post as well.

I am game
in the end they got our money and ran, although we do have some nice devices

Dont forget twitter. https://twitter.com/#!/htc
I tweeted them asking about ICS for the Flyer a while back but was of course effectively ignored.

I weekly troll HTC Facebook pages (HTC, HTC UK, HTC Canada, HTC US) with questions about ICS on the Flyer.
I always get the same answer. That they are still evaluating their portfolio of devices and that we should keep an eye for new information when it becomes available.

In case you haven't noticed, HTC has exited the tablet market and has bigger problems with falling sales and revenue. Sammy has left them in the dust and HTC is scrambling just to be relevant.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am definitely in... htc could be doing so much better right now. Tablets should have been some of the first htc devices to get ICS. I'll start trolling too.
They can put some cool features on the flyer with ICS, it would be cool if htc gave you a choice between phone style ICS and tablet style ICS, I'm not sure which I'd choose, it would be sweet though.

Online Petition for ICS
Hi,
Have asked XDA to post our plans on the XDA News feed so as to gather more momentum and have more users join in. Hence the date is tentatively pushed ahead to the 1st June, 2012.
In the meanwhile, have prepared an online Petition for HTC to bring us information and plans regarding ICS updates for both the Flyer and Jetstream. Do sign in and spread the word too. We will include this petition in our voices on the 1st June 2012. You can find it at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/htc-tablet-users-want-updates/
Also, could someone from the Flyer gang take the initiative to organize and spread the word with relevant links pertinent for the Flyer?
Thanks.

Please include the evo view tab in that petition. Thanks .

I am very very very very very curious about this. They know the key so in theory they could probably easily issue an OTA or an elective RUU. I'm very very curious about the logistics of this.

I know who's phones I will continue to buy. I really hope it applies to the Evo3D.
I was so pissed and so certain that they wouldn't do anything but lip service that I nearly got a NexusS4G today....I was so amped on getting a new phone that I didn't care what it was--so long as it wasn't from HTC.
...glad I didn't do that. Preorder is still on... eff year
This is why I didn't cancel my pre-order. Imagine if people tried this against apple. Wouldn't get anywhere...

If you are who you say you are, any reason why this isn't unlocked? I mean, for real. Think about it... The devs on xda pretty much decide shoot to which phones are purchased due to the customability and let me just say, after 100's of hours of deving on the EVO, I will not be happy if the 3d isn't rooted sooner than later..

What information do you have on the (what I presume would be an) OTA that will address the crypto-signed bootloader that HTC promised to "unlock" for us?
...and if not an OTA form will it be an RUU? If not that, then what? This is a MAJOR ISSUE to all of us here...if it is not addressed to our satisfaction I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that +95% of us WILL return our phones in 30 days.
In summation, how will this issue be address by HTC and/or Sprint?

And a simple ota would solve all that. I'm sticking with my original thoughts. Seriously, how many people follow myn or virus and decide to get phone they use because of what team synergy is working on? Trust me, 2 million hits on rl5 alone for myn. Tmartin and myself watched 150k hits in a couple days when we ported the first sense 3 to the EVO.... Before kingdom... Trust me...non devs get like phones of great devs and a simple ota to unlock it is an easy fix... Not to mention keep strong loyalty for future evos... And better yet, sell a lot more once it hits xda that its rootable.

...then why send him here?
But then again, Sprint reps I've talked to are universally less useful than most people on here (excepting, of course, Sprint employees who work here--never met one)...
..but then again, that would further illustrate how out of touch they are...
...but then again that would be a fantastic trolling angle...

Where is the love? **$375** [ICS] PLEDGE for DONATION

So clearly we are all a bit upset about the confirmation HTC has given us, no ICS love for flyer and view users. Certainly a sad day in the history of our device. But that shouldn't deter you from ever seeing ICS on our beloved tab's.
The devs are currently working very hard to get a bootable ICS ROM. And I believe they have made a few monumental breakthroughs over the last week or so. However, they still have quite the ways to go.
Want to speed things up? Want to help out but don't know where to start or how to help.... TRY DONATING!
i've been a part of this process and have seen devices benefit greatly from this in the past.
But i'd like to set this topic up for pepole interested in Donating to achieve a goal.
i'd personally love to see AOSP/CM9 on our devices but there's a lot left still to do, lets help motivate our current developers, and potentially get others excited by posting up what you are TRULY willing to donate should ICS rom's for the flyer/view become commonplace here at XDA.
Im personally willing to donate to all developers involved in bringing ICS rom to flyer at least 50$ for the whole project, to be divided among devs as they see fit.
I will update this post regularly to try and keep a running tally of how much potential donations could be claimed by the group who brings a working ICS rom to our device.
Killerskincanoe: 50 US$
Kudzus: 50 US$
Lawguy: 30 US$
Inmnbob: 50 US$
N7of9: 20 US$
Brandonc_mail: 25 US$
iflyer: 25 US$
RED ZMAN: 50US$
nieves53: 25US$

I'd really enjoy a jetstream I think. The only thing holding me back is lack of dev support. And price. There's really only a few devs for flyer and view. Super glad to have the ones we do! All we need is a working kernel. That is 95% of the work to get this started. The kernel for the express and the flyer are different, so we actually need two bootable kernels (one for view, one for flyer). I wouldn't know if the flyer 3G needs a different one, hopefully not so.
I can do the rest of the work transitioning and feeding AOSP ICS roms for view, that's pretty simple and straightforward.
So, some people you can wave that $250 bounty pot to off the top of my head:
- cayniarb
- adrenalyne
- jmztaylor (hope you figure it out, dude)
- LorD ClockaN (maybe if he wants to )
- toastcfh (?)
- ???
any more candidates feel free to toss in.
We actually already got it booting on the Flyer. But it crashes after about 30 seconds because the WiFi isn't working as it should, and that breaks wpa_supplicant, which results in the SetupWizard to crash because normally that APK calls wpa_supplicant.
Edit: no, nvm, that is not it. WiFi ain't working, but the real issue that's going on seems to be a memory leak which makes pmem run out of space, causing the app to crash. Every application has this behaviour, a change in the kernel should sort it out.
I'm in $25

Gotta clarify that only the flyer is being worked on, no progress in the view though.
I talked with Lord, he has no time unfortunately. cayniarb/tiamat may be getting a view soon. That would mean a good leap for the view if it happens. The flyer guys can just follow up on the other guy.

I'm in with $25.
Which device - Flyer or View - would be worked on first?
Depends on who is the person working on the kernel. None of the devs currently working here have both flyer and view, to my knowledge. It's a lot of trial and error to get the kernel working (and the other device needs a different one), even I have tried for the view. But it is pretty much the only thing that is keeping us from getting AOSP/ Sense 4 ICS right now.
All builds, ports and whatnot should be working fine once we get past that challenge.
Worst comes to worse, the CM team has the view defined in their kernel setup. Just a matter of time if that view maintainer decides to work on it. I don't know about the flyer.

[LEAK] [ICS 4.0.4 +Sense 4.0] HTC_Flyer_ICS_Sense_RC1

They said it wasn't coming but they were wrong.
More to come later but here is the link to the official Release Candidate for ICS with Sense 4.0 for Flyer.
I have been using it for around 15 minutes but so far so good. The face unlock feature isn't working right (for me) but that will eventually be sorted.
This link is a little dodgy but I am working on getting a mirror up soon.

Yeah some people just want stock AT&T Sense. Anyways, I believe it's AT&T fault for not rolling out the update. HTC leaves it up to the carrier to when they want to release the update. I could be wrong because Tmo and Sprint hasn't released 4.2.2 either. I have a feeling that The Verizon HTC one will be released before we see an update.

Hahaha like it's all HTCs fault... International has it and there is basically no difference between international and AT&T software besides stupid bloat, so go complain to AT&T if you want. I'm sure they'll send the OTA to your phone right there on the spot.

yeah what's up with this? didn't XDA used to require like 50 posts before you could start a thread? this is why we have androidforums.com. regardless, HTC needs to spend more on marketing so that more people will buy their products and ATT will have to prioritize the updating. this delay is not on HTC...it's almost 100% on AT&T. ATT had the HOX JB update for like 3.5 months before they pushed it out to people, and their own customer service isn't even made privy to the status. this is what the purchase of subsidized phones and contracts gets us consumers. if it's REALLY a problem for you, then you're at XDA for the solution. this isn't a place to complain. if you want stock sense, that's fine, I can totally appreciate it, but you dont come to, and sign up for, a Dev website to ***** about the lack of a stock OTA from a carrier known to take (queue Sandlot) FOR-EV-ER to update it's phones.
Interesting. Thank you to everyone for your thoughtful comments. I have rooted a lot of phones and wanted to see why the update was not moving forward. The extra colorful comments are welcomed as well. The only issue with forums is I could be gaining advise from experts or middle school students.

I think the snide replies are rooted in the fact that the basic sentiment of your original post has been stated an overwhelming amount of times on this website, especially with regards to AT&T and HTC issuing an OTA for major - and even minor - software updates. Many folks get tired of coming to this site to read the same thing, hence the increased likelihood of getting a snide reply.
Truthfully, the update probably is moving forward, it's just that AT&T is about as transparent as the Bush administration so we never have any clue where things stand with regards to actual delivery of the updates. Yes, forums is probably going to be hit or miss with regards to quality of advice. But the way you're delivering your comment here makes you seem like you should be in forums, and is probably going to get you some colorful responses from non-middle schoolers.
If you've rooted as much as you claim, you probably know that we almost never know why carrier updates are not moving forward....or if they're moving forward at all. Many come here to find technical solutions and workarounds to that exact ongoing problem, and often get annoyed seeing the same thing posted again and again in each subforum. I think the general assumption here is that many of us are, in fact, frequently posting complaints/concerns/comments on carrier and manufacturer websites, social media pages, forums, etc. We're all on the same boat, or at least many of us.
We welcome rallying for a cause here, but it's possible there's a better way to go about starting a rally for this issue. In the past, folks have posted the actual interactions they've received from customer support reps and techs, feedback responses, etc, and discussions have ensued as to the best ways to get in touch with the companies involved with regards to really displaying the distaste of both the developer and general enthusiast consumer. The AT&T/Rogers/Telus HTC One X forums is a great case study, in particular, the rally around getting the original JB update RUU, source, etc.
I've had a few interactions with HTC and ATT with regards to future updates, but have gotten absolutely zero information from them. Sadly, they mask their lack of sharing as ignorance all too well. Even more sad is that CSRs and technicians are probably not really lying at all when they claim to know nothing about the updates. Again, we're hooked into contract, not to mention that the vast majority of their consumers don't realize the potential benefits of upgrades, and in many cases aren't even aware of their potential existence. That's where we'll probably really see the change, in getting more people familiarized with the beast we are burdened to deal with; not here, but in the general public.
