So i am rooted on 2.3.5 running eclipse 2.2 and my back button is broken i have been using the root app Button Savior but i would like a hard key instead of an on-screen back button. Is there any way i could make the search button (hard button) the back button ? Any help is appreciated
Im not sure for eclipse but with cm7 Its one of the options in the menu no app needed

And if not on CM7, there is a file you can edit that allows you to changes the button functions. I forget what file. Theres a thread in here somewhere talking about how to make the search button into the camera button. The file can be changed to do the same for your problem. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403013&highlight=camera
In the third post I think, there is directions on what file was edited for that. Looking at the file myself, I would think you could replace "key 217" (the search key) with the info from "key 158" (the back key). So the line would read:
key 217 BACK WAKE_DROPPED
You could probably have two lines say the same. They would both just have the same function which doesnt matter since your back button doesnt work anyway. But before you do this, do a backup of the file, and your ROM if you'd like. I would feel safe doing this to my own phone but not everyone is so backup what you'd like.
Unless you are using CM7, then just go the easy built in option it provides.

Like what was said, it is permanent until you sbf or flash a new rom or replace the file with the backup you should make. I looked at the options in CM7 and I cant find anything that remaps the buttons to anything other than an app, shortcut, etc. I've never used CM7 settings to change a hard button to another hard button. I just assumed since that was what was said. So someone else would have to help you out on that if its possible.
The other app that thelowend linked too seems to look pretty good though. You may want to try that first and then go into changing files manually if it doesnt end up helping you.

Is there a way to disable the hardware buttons (home, search, back, menu) on the gtab? I find myself hitting them when I don't want to.

Button remapper app.
In fact, here it is.
Thanks for the link, goodintentions. It installed and opens up great.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to use this app to actually disable the hardware buttons on the Gtab. I'm running Vegan b5.1 (with supplement) and Clymsyn's kernel v6.
I've tried setting their state to 'none' and that didn't work... also tried searching the 'action' dropdown for a 'disable' or 'none' entry, but couldn't find one.
Any guidance would be appreciated, thanks.
You dont need to change the states, only the actions. Set it to Focus for all the home/search/back/menu you see. If you mess something up, it should allow you to restore the keys after you reboot

Button remapper works great when pared with button Savior. It gives you a placable tab that when touched brings up back, home, menu and search buttons. Really handy.
Oh and I remapped my gtabs buttons to be a dpad. It really helps when selecting links online.
Disable hardware buttons
Hi all, I downloaded the app, installed and set buttons to focus.
No joy, none at all.
Using Honeycomb, could this be the issue?
Or, does anyone know any other solution?

can you tell me which file should I edit to do this?
How do I set a button mapping to "None"? My "back" button is faulty, i want to turn it off completely. Is there a way?
Ok guys i'm posting this in a new thread (didn't see another in search sorry if i noobed up and missed it) Me and others have been enjoying HC to it's fullest thanks to the awesome work being done by the DEV teams. But I feel it's time to cut ties with those dreaded capacitive buttons that always get in MY way because they are no longer needed in HC.As we all know button Remapper does not work on HC.
Anyways too the good stuff...after digging around a bit i found this file here:
/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
This file controls the button mapping, all you have to do is edit the top 4 lines and restart Or i'll include the modified file so you can just push it using Root Explorer.
As of now i will no longer be continuing this, as i'm going to be leaveing XDA for some personal reasons ty all for your replies and i will be leaving this download up.
Edited Download....just rename without the .zip ok guys
So far i've tested this on Flashback 5.5 but please leave feedback if it works on Gtabcomb and 1.1 or 1.2 Boot loaders please.
OK as the title now says KEYBOARD working... it turned out to be an easy fix..
Just change the top lines to (FOCUS). Thank You to the person who shot me the PM to try it out (abentley).
Also as a side note it turnes out that you can use a usb 4in1 to hook up a mouse+keyboard+usb if you guys want...
If you guys like the work i (TRY) to do then hit me a Thanks...my meter is falling to the dark side!!!
gtabcom 1.2 beta 3.2
Working, thanks a lot, I was wondering if possible, hate when accidentally touch any of those cap. Keys.
Thanks for the reply...and also including the Rom your on.
You can put it on xda. just add .zip to the filename. please do that. thanks
Ok OP has been updated Enjoy guys...just remove the .zip
I'm not a coder (at all), but is there a way to turn this into an app so we can easily toggle the buttons on/off? That would be awesome!

Do the capacitive buttons still work in recovery? Because I know they're required for CWM and I wouldn't want to do this if it meant giving up CWM for the lame old stock recovery.

To save your pixels and remove honeycomb-statusbar, you can do a force stop of "System UI" from the settings menu, and "system-ui" will automatically restart the status-bar wont reappear (because of an existing bug).
Goto Settings->Applications->ManageApplications->All
Select "System UI"
Force Stop.

Yes, it's possible. WAKE means that if that button/key is pressed while the phone is asleep (screen is off), it will wake the phone up and return it to the app/lock screen.
WAKE_DROPPED means that if that button/key is pressed while the phone is asleep (screen is off), it will 'wake' the phone, but it will NOT return it to the application/lock screen.
Basically, WAKE = unlock phone, WAKE_DROPPED = Doesn't unlock phone.

Thanks. Will doing this disable the volume buttons though? I changed the search button to the camera button as was described and, obviously, the search function is gone. Will that happen with the volume buttons. If so, I dont want to mess with it.
First off, excellent thread with an excellent answer.
This needs to be stickied!
Now, another question. I went in there and saw a lot of different .kl files. I myself use SwiftKey X. Does it matter which file I edit? For example, here are the files I have:
AVRCP.kl
Motorola_Bluetooth_Wireless_Keyboard.kl
cpcap-key.kl
qwerty.kl
tegra-kbc.kl
usb_keyboard_102_en_us.kl
Does the tegra-kbc.kl file work across all different keyboard software?
Thanks!

Unless you removed the VOLUME_UP and/or VOLUME_DOWN in that, then no. Just change WAKE_DROPPED to WAKE and it should be fine.
The worst that could happen is what... your volume doesn't work for a second while you change it back? lol

Awesome, It worked. Thanks again. This is a cool little tweak.
What I'd like to see is ROM developers include this in their ROMs. I know in Eclipse and Liberty ROMs, they have a "parts" option in the system settings that allows you to modify various things.
Heck, maybe even ROM Toolbox should do this. Maybe a tweet to JRummy might be in order?
It shouldn't be that hard to write an app to do it. Of course, it would need root access and the ability to remount /system as read/write and then set it back after it's modified the file.
Maybe this is what I need to do after I learn how to program a droid! No promises!
I've seen an app like that, but it didn't work for me because it was outdated. Forgot where I found it... as for the /system , I find it easiest to just use ADB on my computer and run the command 'adb remount'. That automatically sets /system as RW.
I'm no dev, and I certainly don't know how to make apps... so unfortunately I can't help with that. :|
EDIT:
Glad it worked for you jsgraphicart.

I did this directly on the phone using Root Explorer. It has the options to switch from R/W to R/O. I just opened up the file in text editor, made the changes and saved. It even made a backup of the original for me. To me, thats easier than going through a computer.

That's what I do to, because then I would need to pull and push the files. I was talking about in general making the /system a RW; for other needs.
I use root explorer too, and that automatic backup is a great feature. Gives you some peace-at-mind when doing this.

First of all, what mod did you install? I want one too. Lol.
As for your menu key, if get any root file manager and go to /system/usr/keylayout/ and examine the .kl files there. As for me, mine is located at cyttsp_key.kl. You should see something like
Code:
# KEY_MENU, KEY_BACK, KEY_HOME
key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
key 158 BACK VIRTUAL
key 102 HOME VIRTUAL
Simply replace MENU with APP_SWITCH and you should be all set. I'm not sure if spacing is important but keep a backup of the original file first before modifying it just in case.

I know, but my friends and family barely know what is an android phone, so I wouldn't have any friend haha
Not sure where else to stick this so forgive me if it's int he wrong place.
I have a Droid a855 (Froyo 2.2.1) that is rooted and running Cyanogen.
A few years ago I wanted to change which app came up with the camera button, there was no easy way to do this at the time but I recall I found a link explaining how to edit a file (I was rooted) and change the app that came up when the camera button was pressed.
Fast forward to today and I want to change this app to a different app, but all the ways of setting an app relation to the intent action of the camera button fail. Nothing overrides the app I "hard set" to the button.
So how is it possible to specify the action of a hardware button that cannot be overridden with an intent? (As well as I can put it, i'm not a programmer) Since this is what I seem to have done, but i'm not even sure what too Google for in trying to find how to undo what I did.
Thanks
