I just got an Evo 3D and I am trying to flash a custom recovery image. I used htcdev to unlock my phone, then I flashed the latest Clockwork mod recovery image to the phone using fastboot, but when I try to boot into recovery from the bootloader it just reboots and it never takes me into recovery. Ive tried flashing a few different recoveries in the hopes that I just got a bad file but nothing works. Any ideas?

Try downloading 4ext from play store, after inatalling it will walk you thru the set up to flash the recovery
Can you get into the bootloader by doing the following:
- Pull out the battery
- Put the battery back in
- Hold the volume down button
- Hold down the power button while still continuing to hold down the volume down button
From there you should go str8 to the bootloader screen rather than the splash screen.
If you get to the bootloader screen, are you able to get into the recovery from the bootloader menu?

Yea, do the battery pull, you can also unchecked 'fastboot' in settings, power.

So since I posted, I have made it to the next step. I have TWRP recovery installed and working, but for some reason the whole boot.img and kernal flashing doesnt work. After trying for another couple hours trying to install MeanROM I have had no success. Flashing the ROM from recovery works fine, but once it gets to the step of updating the kernal, it just freezes and I had to pull the battery (waiting 10+ minutes). After doing so, I could get past the boot screen, but it would never properly load the ROM, I just got an endless status bar and black screen. I went through this process a couple of times before I decided to restore to my original nandroid backup. Even restoring the backup caused it to hang when it got to restoring boot.img. After waiting another 10 minutes I pulled the battery and rebooted and luckily was able to get into the stock Sense ROM, which is better than nothing, but I really wish I could install a ROM like MeanROM.

Try 4ext Recovery (see my signature). It will flash the kernel properly for S-on users.
It didnt work for me, I am still on the stock ROM so I dont have root access. Is there a way to flash 4ext through fastboot?
EDIT: I got it installed with fastboot, trying it now. Thank you for the suggestion!
EDIT 2: I worked!!! Seriously, thank you again!

I am s-off and using the latest 4ext recovery. I upgraded from revolutionary CMW to 4ext so i could try CM9. It was alright but nothing special. Afterwards i tried to update to the latest vitrous sense 4.0 rom and i couldn't get past with the boot animation. Every single ROM i tried has been like this. Im wiping the data before I flash and using supewipe.zip. I never faced issue with CMW is it the recovery or am i doing something wrong?

how long are you waitng at this boot screen... i know when i installed CM9 it took over 5 minutes at the boot screen to set it all up ... flash GUI is an app to flash roms from the phones ROM but you wont use that ...which part of the boot are you getting stuck at... the one with the CM9 logo and the rotating electric ? or at the first splash screen showing the htc logo?

have you tried extracting the boot.img file from your ROM and then manually flashing it? try MeanROM 2.3 as well its a new one that is ICS based and loads fairly fast ... atleast i had no issues with it...also on your first time boot make sure the phone is NOT plugged up to the data cable
i dont know if you know this but if you download the PG86IMG from Goo im you can put that on the root of your sd card which is the first thing you see when you click sd card you can run that from bootloader and reset the phone
I fixed the problem. I just had to use flash image gui.

4ext works great, under wipe, select wipe dalvich + cache, then the format all partitions(besides sd card) option near the bottom.
Then flash your Rom, by chance is 4extsmartflash on? That's for s on devices so turn it off if enabled, as you are s off.

just to make it simple download the file ad rename it to recovery.img and move it to the same place the fastboot.exe is located... take your phone and boot into your hboot by holding volume down and then the power button.. scroll down to the fastboot option and press the power button... youll see the screen change and then plug your phone up to your computer you should see on your phone screen now the phrase "fastboot usb"... from there open up a ms-dos window and direct yourself to the directory with the fastboot.exe and recovery.img files.. then type in
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
it should send and then write , when completed power your phone and then reboot into recovery and it should be then revclockmod version...and probs feel free to PM me
Happen before
This is something that happened me to me before, my problem was I erased a bunch of important stuff and tried to install a kernel using recovery. I'm on hboot 1.50 so yeah **** turn messy. But I unrooted, then re-rooted and used GUI to flash my kernel of any choice but ext to flash my rom. Revolutionary recovery doesn't work too good on my phone, so it also varies depending on recovery:fingers-crossed:, just word of advice do a factory reset+wipe dalvich cache(do it at least 2 times) and it has worked for me whenever I flash a new rom. Whenever you reboot give it some time and don't rush or press anything. Once your rom kicks in let it sit for at least a couple mins and then proceed with whatever you need to do. Hope this helps!
I went to OTA update MeanRom from 3.1 to 3.2 and after the rom install and reboot my phone kept rebooting, I waited for about 45 minutes just make sure it wasnt going to take.
I then used fastboot to install my last recovery however, the recovery install froze at installing /system for over an hour. I had no choice but to try and reboot as none of the buttons worked. I am now stuck at the HTC screen and can not get into fastboot or phone.
I've tried searching for a solution for a day and still have had no luck. Cant run RUU as it has a USB error which I expected as the phone never boots.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am/was on latest radio/firmware/s-off.
Thanks for looking!

I'm confused...You were flashing a recovery from fastboot? Or were you doing a nandroid restore? You tried holding volume down + power to get into the bootloader right?

Did you do the restore from recovery (TWRP) or did you use fastboot? I ask because fastboot isn't typically used to restore from a nandroid backup, so just trying to understand your description. Do you have adb on your pc?

Gotcha...then this is very strange. Once you have adb installed, try plugging the phone into your pc, power it on and when it's at the HTC screen try the "adb reboot recovery" command and see if that gets you into TWRP. I've never tried using adb from that screen so not sure if the phone is capable of communicating at that point, but worth a shot...

That's what I was afraid of...the only other thing I can think of is to maybe try flashing a new boot image, but you may have the same problem you had with adb in not being able to communicate with the phone. What you would need to do is pull the boot.img file out of the MeanROM zip, put it somewhere on your PC, then with your phone plugged in open the command prompt and type:
Code:
fastboot flash boot <path_to_boot_img>boot.img
It's basically the same process as installing a new kernel on the new hboot version, which is outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794867
Typically you have to be in the bootloader for this, but it's worth a try from the HTC screen. I've been successful with the fastboot command when adb does not see the device, so may work in this case as well. If not, then I'm out of ideas. Since you can't get to the bootloader, you should be able to take it into sprint or best buy without them knowing you tampered with it. Just tell them you took the latest OTA and the battery died during the installation or something. Hopefully they will exchange it, but you run the risk of getting one with the new hboot and losing S-OFF Better than no phone at all though, I suppose...
Not too sure if u have a recovery installed but regardless you should be able to simulate a battery pull by holding power button for 10 seconds or until the captive button lights flash 12 times I think. When the phone powers down press and hold volume down only and you should boot into boot loader. From here you should have a better chance of using adb or fastboot or recovery if you have twrp installed. If you can get to boot loader you have options especially since your s-off.
Good luck man

Ok I was able to get into bootloader and tried to flash MeanRom after wiping cache/dalvik/factory reset/system three times each with a new download of MeanRom and it said it flashed successfully. I rebooted and it keeps getting almost to setup then reboots. Should I try an RUU again? If so what version should I use?
Bootloader says:
Jewel PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
CID-SPSC_001
HBOOT-1.12.111
RADIO-1.05.11.0606

That's good you can get into the bootloader, as previous poster said, you have a lot more options. I would save RUU as a last resort. See if you can flash a different ROM, like viper 4g or clean ROM. Or maybe an older version of mean ROM.
Sent from my EVO LTE
That's odd that after a full wipe mean ROM won't boot. Wasn't there issues with mean ROM if your recovery wasn't up to date. I would do a full wipe and try to restore a nandroid. Someone with more knowledge than me can defo help you . You can access bootloder, you have a recovery installed so you should be fine.

I am not sure if that is all it is. I tried to install 3.3 and then flashed the stock kernel over it and still couldn't boot properly. Its ok it forced me to try CM10.
I installed an update without thinking a while back on my phone. It was software version 2.13.651.1 or something, I can't remember. I rooted my phone yesterday using this method:
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-4g-l...tc-evo-4g-lte-unlock-bootloadertwrp-recovery/
I can use ROM Manager to create a backup and flash recoveries. When I flash a version of CM10, it gets stuck on a bootloop. When I hold the power and volume down buttons, I see HBOOT 1.19 and S-ON.
Is there no hope for me to flash roms or is there a way that I can still do it? I've read bad things about having a HBOOT 1.15 or above or something like that. I did not get S-OFF before I updated. Can I no longer get S-OFF? I'm not entirely sure what S-OFF is and what I need it for.
I read somewhere on xda that people who have a HBOOT like mine should try this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-h-boot-1-15-a.html
I'm going to try that now, let's see how it goes.
If you use fastboot to install kernels you should be good to go after a normal flash through recovery, my phone came s-on and hboot 1.19 and I have no problems flashing roms. Only thing I think we can't do are radios without an official update, don't quote me on that though..
Your not screwed. You won't be able to get s-off at this time, but you can still flash roms. When moving from a sense rom to aosp like cm10, you need to flash the kernel...i use flash gui. I'm guessing that is why you are getting the bootloop.

Thank goodness, phew; I thought I was doomed. So if I am to follow #1 on here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-h-boot-1-15-a.html, I should be able to flash roms afterwards? Do I need to do this every time I want to flash a new rom?
EDIT: So I believe my phone ran out of battery during the school day stuck in the bootloop. I am charging it right now and the orange light is there. When I hold down the power and volume down buttons, I get nothing. The screen stays black, but the orange light disappears. Then the orange light comes back. Should I just let it charge?
You just need to do it when switching between different type of roms like aosp and sense. If you stick with cm10 you can just flash the rom after the first time.

Adding on to my last edit, sometimes when I hold down the power and volume down buttons, the 3 virtual buttons blink and then go out as if rebooting my phone. The screen is always black. Nothing is showing up. Should I be worried or do I just need to be patient and wait for my phone to charge a little?
When the screen turns off let go of the power button for a second then hold it down again while continuing to hold down the volume down button. That should boot you into recovery.

The screen is black no matter what I try. I've tried just pressing the power button to turn the phone on, holding power and volume for recovery, holding power button, nothing is working. The screen remains blank no matter what I do right now. Is it just too low battery right now to do anything?

I have no idea why, but CM10 just started working. It was getting stuck in the bootloop for the whole day and even after I had done everything I posted earlier. Just now I tried to RUU and that wasn't working. When it came up with my phone's image version, it was blank. It was saying upgrade from nothing to 2.13.651.1.
I decided to repeat steps from the rooting process I used yesterday: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-4g-l...tc-evo-4g-lte-unlock-bootloadertwrp-recovery/
I did step 25 again and then I did it again, but this time I flashed the stock recovery rom. For some reason unknown to me, CM10 actually loaded through and worked this time. Was something wrong with the other recoveries? I'm just glad it's working.

Thank You So Much for posting that link! I have been searching everywhere to figure it out how to flash rom to rom. My first rom was Meanrom ICS and I didn't have to do anything extra with that. So when I wanted to flash first to CM10, then JellyBam, I couldn't understand why I kept getting stuck in bootloop. I figured out eventually it was all about boot.img, but couldn't figure out how to do it separately.
thanks again.
Hi everyone and sorry if I do not post this in the right area, however I am panicking right now. I started tonight by trying to flash CM10 on my Evo. After flashing, the CM10 boot animation was still on the screen after about 30 minutes. I reboot and restored my previous backup. Everything was fine and sometime later after reading that I had to flash the kernel from Cm10 FIRST, then flash the rom in recovery immediately afterwards, I decided to try once more. Again, the same thing happened with the CM10 animation screen.
So once again, I restored my backup. But this time, my phone loads to the white screen that says "HTC QUIETLY BRILLIANT: This is for developmental purposes.. blah blah blah" It stays on this screen for a couple minutes, then I see a gray bar flashing at the top of the screen, and it reboots and does exactly the same thing.
When I enter into recovery with the Vol Down button, the bootloader still comes up and I can still get into recovery. I can't seem to find anything instructions specific to my situation though. I'm thinking that it is because of the CM10 kernel I flashed, but I was under the impression that by doing a restore of my backup, that my old kernel would be restored along with the stock rom.
Once again, I appologize if I am not in the right section, but please any help would be more than appreciated.

If your phone is s-off, use a computer to redownload the rom (did you check the md5 signature?) copy it to the phone using the mount feature in recovery, and reflash the zip there too. you only need to use adb if your phone is s-on to load the right boot.img, or it will get stuck at the cm loading screen. your phone is okay, i went through this at first too. look at the dirtyracoon soff method if you havent fully unlocked that yet, and there may be other ways of achieving that too.
I unlocked my bootloader, flashed with Trickdroid, found some bug, then I decided to try the Renovation HD Rom. Got frozen during Aroma twice. Then I rebooted twice. Now my device is half-bricked. I can't get into recovery anymore. Tried CWM, TWRP. doesn't work. everytime I tried to get in recovery, it will just jump to the HTC screen. and after the HTC screen, it will reboot itself, and keep looping...
I want to try to restore using RUU, but there is NO RUU for AT&T version now.
I can't get in recovery, I can't get in the system.... I am stuck. Hopeless now.
Am I the first to brick a HTC ONE?
After 5 hours of struggling, IT got into the recovery again!!!!!!!!! didn't know what I did to make it work. and flashed with Renovation HD Rom and working now.
Update: If you keep getting boot loop, or can't get into recovery, try the ALL IN ONE kit and use the "erase cache", that fix my problem, and I learned it the hard way..

Can you still get into Fastboot?
Use android debugging USB push over image may need to add time delay to allow next available time there is an opening to load image.
Good luck

Yes, I can still get in Hboot, and fastboot
Hi I am a complete noob and just got my HTC one and went way to fast with rooting my phone and may have a bricked phone as well. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the clockwork mod recovery using the all in one kit. I proceeded to boot into the bootloader, and then went into the recovery. I backed up my phone at the point using clock work mod. I then wiped my phone to factory settings and wiped the cache. At that point I forgot that I had not put my ROM that I wanted to use on the phone storage. So i pressed reboot now. Obviously this was a mistake because there is nothing on the phone to boot off of. Now I have an HTC One that is not turning on no matter what I do and I have no idea where to start. Anybody know where I can start? It is also worth mentioning that I made another noob mistake by starting this process with 35% on my phone so is it possible that it is out of battery and not able to charge?
Charge battery copy ROM to SD card press volume up and power look for clockwork mod recovery go to SD card and install rom . Hopefully nothing more is required. Don't panic if clockworkmod is giving you brick sign usually its a sign you have wrong clockwork mod installed.
