SG2 with boot to gecko...No android on it! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

What the Devs say about this? Do it have a chance to be better than Android?
"This year’s CTIA Wireless conference in New Orleans is surprisingly short on major new smartphones. But at last night’s MobileFocus press event, I happened across a fascinating, one-of-a-kind handset which I hadn’t seen in person yet: Mozilla’s alpha version of a phone running Boot to Gecko, its project to turn the web technologies behind Firefox into a stand-alone mobile operating system."

Because its not for our device, it may or may not work with broken calls/keys but I haven't tested it myself.

Out of curiosity, why would anyone decide to flash it ever? It's not like play store will be accessible. It's a feeble yet very stupid attempt by Mozilla...

Flasholics?
Honestly I don't have any details about that OS.

Thats a pre Alpha...
For sure another "player" to this market will be a good thing. More updates, more releases, more everything.
Funny thing on that picture is that it is an International sg2 but there is an AT&T logo there. Check the pic.

That's most likely the carrier its being used with, which is perfectly normal considering the tech site is probably located in the US.

I think its a neat different Idea... Do I think it will go anywhere like android and ios? Not really (would be cool if it did).
I would flash it, but only when its ready for our phone. I would love to at least try it. Who knows it could be the next best thing since the cheese wheel!

I personally would not mind flashing if LiLChris were to ever port it

Anyone looking in to this? I'm really curious on using it, just to mess around.

I tried flashing this about a week ago...failed in Odin and wouldn't boot past recovery...was using siyah whick stated b2g support....had to flash stock and restore nandroid ... not sure what went wrong but there are some issues there...so beware

There is a flashable zip somewhere in the original thread in the i9100 forums. I'm using it, I just don't get to use it because I have to build something which I can't do...

i777 with B2G
Boot2Gecko uses a different kernel from Android, still Linux, but with many different things compiled into it. If you go to the page with the i9100 image, you'll see a .tar.md5 image, which is really just a TAR image with some extra. You can untar it and get out the boot.img, which is the kernel. You can then use ODIN to flash the image, and if it is inoperable you can use Heimdall to flash the boot.img directly as the kernel. I stopped quickly with this because my i777 only partially worked with no radio on the last try, and it became unusable quickly. It was also getting extremely hot near the top of the unit, so I went and flashed back the AOKP image I had been using previously.
My attempts to build from scratch have been unpleasant to say the least, and it seems the Nexus is on the list of hardware along with the i9100, but the i777 and i9100g and others are not on the roadmap yet.
For those who want to know what this is, it's a Linux kernel that boots into a special version of Firefox, and then uses web documents and web standards to do everything. All of the OS is coded in HTML5/JS/CSS and has new JS implemented for controlling and using the phone's hardware. The "apps" are websites that are accessed remotely and then cached so that they do not have to be updated until the remote version changes, so the OS can upgrade extremely rapidly.
I'm looking forward to seeing this remove some of the mess made by the manufacturers and providers, and to see some much needed user control brought back into the system.

Big question since i'm brazillian, WHY BRAZIL?

Sure there is, and it's a really good way to end up having the exact same
problems as a lot of other people are having here when they done that.
So if you still want to do it, let me know and I will post all the links

Wait till some developers port them to i777 (if ever). Otherwise, you may wind up with screwed up capacitive buttons, a modem that doesn't work, and maybe even different bootloaders.
It can be done - designgears' Perception proves this.
What I do know - it won't work with Odin-flashable ROMs like Litening. I tried flashing Litening's system image once and it didn't even boot.
For a CWM-flashable package, at the very least you would need to:
1) Replace the kernel with one for our device, or remove it from the package and the updater-script lines that flash it
2) Remove or replace the modem and updater-script lines that flash it
3) REMOVE ANY BOOTLOADERS FROM THE PACKAGE AND UPDATER-SCRIPT OR YOU WILL LIKELY BRICK.
If you do the above, it might work.

see, the difference there is that the desire hd and the inspire are identical aside from the audio differences, which was an easy flash
the international galaxy s2 and the att galaxy s2 are different in more ways than one. the main difference being the capacitive/hardware button layouts.
its not like the inspire was. dont go flashing random crap willy nilly
Maybe a script can be made to easily port from the international to ours. Designgears has done it already I wonder what it took to port. They've got a ton of available roms already and some are themed quite nicely!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Unfortunately, there is the potential for not always recognizing automatically whether a bootloader is present. It's easy enough to check for Sbl.bin and nuke it - but what if the ROM author used a slightly different name? Also, what happens if the updater-script tries to flash a file that's not there? It might write just enough to corrupt the bootloader.
Simply put, unlike Hellraiser, it can't be done automatically since people sometimes include bootloaders.
Also even after replacing modem/kernel, it looks like DG had to do some more "down and dirty" customizations involving the noise reduction controls to get call quality to be decent. Smali mods tend to be nonportable/nonautomatable...

Two quick rooting questions

I'm going to root my friends GSII and have a few questions. I'm experienced with rooting since I've been flashing roms/kernels since my old Evo 4G and my current Evo 3D, but I am unfamiliar with Samsung phones. I've read the stickies but still was unsure about a few things.
What exactly is odin and what does it do? You can flash a rom/kernel normally through recovery right?
And last one, what is a modem? Is that like a firmware package that we have for HTC phones?
If you're going to do this you have to read around. Google will help you out big time
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
I have read around...I read everything for the rooting process as well. After everything I read, I have only those two simple questions. Is it really that much of a pain in the ass to just answer them? Whatever happened to a helpful XDA community?
I'm only saying this so you know how to do some troubleshooting if something goes wrong. If you Google "samsung modem vs HTC radio"or something it Will yield results. Also searching for Odin on wikipedia I know will yield results. This is xda, a developer site. You're supposed to search before posting whether it be Google or here because chances are people have asked the question before

For rooting or obtaining root access, I believe there are 4 options, all listed on the FAQ. It's your choice. For simplicity, I chose the first option.
Modem? Like radio, quality of call (?), quality of data (?)
Don't have enough technical knowledge to clearly explain to you, m8
To rest your case, rooting is easy.
Relax.

Odin is a proprietary software made by Samsung that runs on the Windows platform and is used to transfer firmware onto a samsung phone. You can flash firmware through ClockworkMod Recovery, which is built into the kernel portion of the firmware, but you cannot flash firmware from a stock kernel, you must first install a custom kernel which has CWM Recovery built in.

I'm not familiar with htc phones. Modem is like a radio on other phones. It is a separate piece of firmware that can be flashed separately, or along with other parts of the firmware, which handles the cell network interface, wifi and some other things.

Then I tried flashing Task's AOKP, THEN CM7 again, but no luck.
Go back to one of the samsung gingerbread roms and wipe and then flash cm7. You can't go from ics to cm7 will always get that error.

Not positive because I haven't been in this situation, but I think ICScrewD will show in build.prop as an i9100, which may be causing the updater script to fail, cause it's looking for i777. If you flash back to stock GB before trying to flash CM7, that might solve the issue. Or see the other post a few above yours with info on removing the asserts from the updater script.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here...

+1. I always get this kind of error when flashing an AOSP/AOKP ROM from a Sammy based ROM. I keep a CM9 kernel handy. All I do is flash the CM9 kernel (or AOKP kernel) - reboot into recovery - then flash the new ROM.
Hope this helps.
Unzip the cm9 update zip and go to META-INF, COM,GOOGLE,ANDROID, "updater-script" and open it with a text editor. Then delete/remove the beginning lines that say anything about "get prop" so now you will start with "package extract file". Now save it and then move it back into the same location and overwrite the original one. Zip the folder back up and flash in cwm.
BEFORE
and AFTER PICS.
This will allow you to flash it coming from all/almost ANY ROM. You will not need to do it any other time unless coming from another from again. So if you want to try other rooms just make a Android backup of cm9, switch to another from. If then you want to come back to cm9 just restore the Android backup then flash a newer nightly and you will have no issues. Or you can start again with removing the get prop check any time before flashing it if you don't want to save a Android backup.

Any relevant site that has been around since html5 was released should be updated by now, youtube supports it, fb supports it and just about every other major site. If they don't support html5 and prefer flash, you sir better have good anti-virus software, plus using html5 and not flash reduces the number of ads showing up in your browser, also increases security. Adobe didn't make flash support available for JB but if you install the actual app, it works fine.
Pretty sure all the ones complaining about no flash support will be all over JB the min this device gets a taste of it.

I have no idea where to start for rooting/flashing roms

My i777 is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'm very excited, its my first Android. I've been researching custom firmware and stuff like that for about a month around the web. I just have no idea where to start. I believe my phone still has some form of 2.3 on it, but it could be the current 4.0.4 ICS.
From what I understand, I update the drivers on my computer with Kies, download Odin to root the device and then what? Or superoneclick? I'm interested in CM10 but I know the bugs are still being worked out. I need my camera, MMS, bluetooth, 3g data, at&t radios, mhl, Touchwiz toggles, all the functionality with no soft keys at the bottom. JB would be great if its possible. Other wise I might as well just update the phone to stock ICS and root it for other stuff I want like sixaxis and over/underclocking apps.
There is a reason we have stickies
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
There's things like KK 2.3.6, is that custom GB firmware? I know there is lots of information but no where to start.
pretty sure it would make more sense once you actually have the device in hand....seems pointless to create a new thread asking how to get started when you dont even have the device yet.
use it for at least a day or 2 before you start messing with custom ANYTHING
hell, dont even root it right away. just use it as is to get a feel for it, and verify there is nothing wrong with the hardware....if you just jump in and flash custom firmware, how will you ever know if an issue was hardware or firmware related?
Interesting, good point Pirateghost. I was wanting to put custom stuff on there while I had access to a computer this weekend. Might as well wait though. I'll have a laptop to mess with everything at my own pace by Black Friday anyway.
If it is still running GB, should I upgrade it to ICS, or would that hinder the root process when I want to do that?

The second part of your reply is absolutely spot on.
The first part i dont agree with a 100%.
I too plan to purchase the i777 model in the not too distant future, and its always a good thing to start reading early. Just like getting a feel of the stock rom/hardware is essential.. its always a good thing to read up well in advance. By the time a person is analyzing the h/w.. he is in a position to relate with other user's experiences.
I too was reading up all the stickies and really did got stuck up with the KK6 2.3.6 thing mentioned right at the start and no clue/legend being mentioned as to what it was. I googled a lot and many results had the same thing.. simply started using the terms w.o any hints.
It does gets confusing tbh you know
The thing is, I understand and know the stock hardware and firmware very well already. I have been using my girlfriend's GS2 from Sprint, the "Epic 4g Touch" since she got it in May. I've used it with GB and then ICS in August (I had to tell her to stop ignoring the notification, the update was a good thing!), but it will be good to evaluate the item to fully determine that everything is good with it.
It seems like in your first post, you steered yourself away from CM10, but everything you listed works except mhl I believe. And if you really want that, you will be able to dualboot into shostock once Siyah kernel gets updated.

dont go throwin' just any s2 rom on yer phone there, buddy.
(at&t SGH-I777, sprint SPH-D710, tmobile SGH-T989, etc)
So CM10 is good for everything except mhl...what about stock ics from kies and rooting it after that. Is that simple to do?
I'm interested in project butter and all but even ics would be great as long as its not a CPU hog and laggy. I know it runs fine on the epic 4g touch.

I'm just going to use Kies to get ICS, then find an easy root method

Would actually be easier to root and flash a custom ICS ROM...

Would it? I was looking at galaxys2root and the root method with the siyah (sp?) kernel is designed for 2.3.4 and messes up wifi on 2.3.6.

Also, breaking Wi-Fi is nothing. Flash a kernel to obtain cwm and you've got Wi-Fi back and you're ready to flash a ROM.
