i would like this too. seaching in xda someone gave this link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&feature=search_result
it´s a apps that do that but just by using the app not the power button.

This can't be done by an app... it's a framework.jar job... at least on i9000 you had to edit some properties...
I think this should require a beyond compare session between two frameworks of an already modded terminal (i9000 ?) and report the modification on our framework...
but if someone already knows where to put hands on it would be simpler...
EDIT:
I Think i found something interesting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977501

OK, everyone talks about bootanimations but is it also possible to edit the power off animation?
(I have also a great idea for that! The crt screen off animation from gingerbread, but then as shut down animation!
Like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqeq01tpQek&feature=youtube_gdata_player. But then more gingerbread like... )
I don't think so, or maybe but you would have to edit a .qmg file or something. Which we can't edit cause we dont have the right software.

there must be...... in eclair we had .qmg files for boot animation too.... i have pmed marcellusbe about this..... asked him if there is anything in the kernel that states the shutdown procedure...... Also i'm checking some threads for this cause i don't want like the stock samsung shutdown animation...
maybe we can use other phone's shutdown animation

just edit some framework and put to phone its working
I decided to make onscreen buttons for our luvly x8-s.
Note that it only works with MiniCM9-3.0.0, other ICS roms will be supperted soon.
It works now, ready to try DON'T FORGET TO HIT THANKS TO amieow98!! (You can also thank me!)
Screenshot
Changelog:
V0: Conception that didn't really worked.
V1: Works, credits to amieow98.
V2: Now for MiniCM9 3.0.1 too! 2012/5/2
I have enabled on-screen buttons on my MiniCM9(With blue color)
Why do you say its experimental? it is included in the ROM and as far as i've used mine No problems at all.
What? HOW?
So i didn't supposed to mod the framework and work on it for a while??? SH!T.. But IS it really already included in Minicm9-3.0.0?

It IS already included in MiniCM9-3.0.0.
Just change a line of code and done...
But of course..I notice that on the lockscreen(with on-screen buttons enabled)
there is a black bar covering a small part of the lockscreen (The on-screen button one but there's no touchable buttons)
I guess you can try to fix that?

I am VERY sure I'm using MiniCM9.
I googled how to enable the on-screen buttons.Followed the instructions and stuff.
I decompiled framework-res.apk and went into /res/values/bools.xml
and changed a line of code from this:
<bool name="config_showNavigationBar">false</bool>
To this:
<bool name="config_showNavigationBar">true</bool>
pushed it.boot. There you go,Easy on-screen buttons for you.
Then I changed the color of the buttons.(Images in SystemUI.apk)
why anyone would sacrifice precious screen space to put virtual buttons when there are physical ones are beyond me...
then again... whatever makes u happy i guess
nice find btw

If yes let me know I will post the files used..
Edit :
Here you go buddy first flash the BE + Time scape zip and on top of that flash the timescape fix and then copy the SE _active launcher to the /system/app

@ anirudhks: after flashing the 2 zip files only, the timescape works good. but when i press the infinite view, it crashes. what does SE Active Launcher do if I copy it to system/app? there is already Launcher2 (SE) in system/app after the flashings..
any plans to fix the infinite view bug and add all other SE widgets? I would love to use them on my SGS2 device.. Cheers..

the infinite view has a bug yes as its based on the gingerbread framework , I will need to look into it however I am not a pro developer so would need the help of devs here , also the launcher is the Gingerbread launcher , the newer SE launchers wont recognize the widgets..
In simple words it won't work on touchwiz,? right?

it doesnt work on touchwiz laucher. but it works on SE laucher cos it needs sony framework to run the timescape. it's only the infinite view issue.

Cool thanks Bro , I will dig some resources too ,
Logically we should be able to trick the widget to work with Touch whiz too but just not able to find the right spot to identify the code... will check what I can do ..
or the other way I am looking at is to customize the SE launcher to look like the touchwhiz
