gs3 and aosp - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so at the end of the day, will any of the new touchwiz features be added to the developer roms? i feel like an uneducated idiot for even asking the question, but i guess i dont know how much yall are capable of doing when it comes to things like this. i know in the past, cm7 for example, touchwiz features were not prevalent.
most specifically, will the gs2 be capable of getting the pop up video and s-voice. aokp and nova is starting to grow on me and i find it pointless to buy the gs3 and then slap a custom rom over all of that new software goodness.

I would imagine that would be possible.. But forst things first.. Wr have to waot for a system dump then well know if its possible
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2

Some devs in the general section announced that indeed they plan to implement those features (not called by name) and yes if possible even bring them to other devices (CM).

I thanked your post, not because it was in any way useful but absolutely hilarious!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that will most likely never happen. I'll trade my wife's iPhone 4 for your Note though, I'll even throw in a dead iPad!
Well, truth be told, there is not a solution yet.
BUT, if you wait a bit, a rom called MIUI will likely be developed.
Let me explain...
Cyanogen is a team that develops 'clean' Android roms for many devices. This means, no bloat and has ALL of the features that Android has to offer, enabled (with exception to features that would not be applicable because the phone simply does not have the hardware - for example, if your phone does not have NFC, Cyanogen wont support it for your device and they simply remove all of the code related to this). The result is, the most feature rich version of Android (and most up to date as they do keep up with Google's releases) with the least amount of crap. This keeps the phone lean and clean.
Now, since Cyanogen is open source, they make the source code available for other rom developers to modify what they have done to create different experiences. This allows developers to start with a feature rich rom and develop on top of that to add their own 'flavor' to their work.
One such 'flavor' is MIUI which strives to make your Android device as Iphone like as possible. While it isnt perfectly matched to the Iphone, its moderately close.
Dont get me wrong, I for the life of me am baffled as to why someone would want their Android phone to look like an Iphone but that is what MIUI is there for.
(BTW, if I am wrong about MIUI, feel free to mention it, based on everything I have read about it however, the impression I got was to theme an Android OS to look like IOS).
However, we have a long way before this happens. Rom developers have barely figured out how to do anything with this phone.
To my knowledge, there is only 1 custom rom (Saurom) and it isnt really all that custom from what I can see. All it seems to have is enhancements from the stock rom (overclocking, cwm, att bloat removed?) but in essence is just a more efficient streamlined stock rom.
There is also only one custom kernel that I can see that again, is the same as the stock kernel but allows for overclocking (and I think I read that the davlik cache size was increased).
Once Samsung releases the source code for the Note, we will start seeing alot more rom development, at which time Cyanogen will jump on board and start making roms (using the source that Samsung releases for things like drivers) and once Cyanogen has a relatively stable rom, MIUI will likely take the Cyanogen source and tweak it.
Very convoluted I know but probably wont be seeing anything earth shattering until the source code is released from Samsung.

Who wants cornerstone multi-window for AOSP

I've seen a little bit of talk about this now that we have some AOSP ROMs and personally would like to see this happen but I know that if I just go make a request to someone like the Cyanogenmod team I'll probably not get a response or just be told they're considering it and that's it(I could be wrong). So I'm making this thread to find out just how many people are interested in this and figure out how we should get a hold of whoever can make it happen.
I don't want to get a bunch of people to just start mass email/post/calling anyone into submission. These dev's are already doing a lot of great things for us and I don't want to ruin that. I would really rather give Google an idea of how many people want this feature or already have it through one of Samsung's ROMs and would like to keep it with AOSP so that maybe they won't give the AOSP dev's such a hard time.
So go ahead and chime in if you want multi-window for AOSP and if you know who we should get a hold of or have a good idea of how we should go about asking or if you're a dev who's tired of people always asking for features and just wants me to shut up.
In case you haven't seen cornerstone it's similar to Samsungs multi-window. http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/
In case you haven’t heard the story between Google and Cyanogen about cornerstone yet. http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/samsung-adds-multi-window-despite-threat-from-google-2012109/

No thanks. CM isn't going to risk it. Google allows CM to use their proprietary apps and gives CM users access to the market and other Google services. If multi-window modes are going to risk that relationship then I don't want it.

I understand that and I know that's why CM didn't pursue it before but I think that now that Samsung has gone ahead and made multi-window available it gives us a good precedence, especially if they start using it on more phones than the note 2, like the S3. I think the big thing would be making it only work for apps that specifically state that they work with cornerstone the same way that Samsung does. I know it's a small amount of apps right now but once it hits a certain point most developers would hopefully make it standard when they make their apps and the ones that won't play nice with odd screen sizes can be left to run full screen. I'm just hoping that if they implement it they can use the same flag in apps that Samsung does so that so that app devs have a little more of a reason to make their apps use it for multi-window on AOSP and sammy ROMs.
I haven't found an app that doesn't work. Haven't really tried with games but did check a few with no problems. It works Google should roll it out.

I think in this case Google is too worried about catering to the lowest denominator - ie. the people with smaller less known android phones rather than beasts like the S3/Nexus 4/DNA/Note 2 and their misguided complaints that their new device can't run the core OS properly.
I asked Entropy about it in IRC a couple nights ago but he said it really makes no difference even with Samsung implementing Multi window. I looked into cornerstone but it seems a bit outdated. It was last updated 10 months ago.

It hasn't be updated to work with Jelly Bean yet, they are still working off of ICS source.
Thanks slick_rick and imnuts glad to hear some input from a developer. I've done a little research and haven't found any JB ROMs using it so darn. Unless it gets updated or if anyone thinks that Samsungs multi-window can be ported to non touch-wiz roms. I should go see if I can get a hold of anyone at onskreen to see if they have any plans on updating.

ota 4.1.2 for at&t devices?

Any idea on when at&t LG optimus g will be getting the 4.1.2 update? Or even just a 4.1 jellybean. I'm guessing it'll be 4.1.2. Since sprints version just got. Also I'm guessing this is why this device. Doesn't have so many. Roms as of yet.. maybe everyone is just waiting for. A. Ota. Jellybean
noone knows when AT&T will roll out the jelly bean update. there are some jelly bean roms in development section you can try out.

What I ment was I'm guessing the devs for this device are waiting for the jellybean update. That's why there's not to many roms,I'm sure once jellybean hits this device everyone will start making roms. There's really no point in making roms since its on 4.0.4 make a rom jellybean hits then devs have to rebase and remake there whole rom so might as well wait.. hopefully its true though chus this is a really nice device to not have any support/roms

Stop whining about AT&T and do something about it. As in, try the Original Android Development forum. We have AOSP, AOKP, and CM10.1 mostly functional. I agree some more ROMs would be neat, but really, what are you so desperate for?
That said, I have an honest question: Aside from maybe PA, what are we still missing out on ROM-wise? 30 reskins of AOKP?
Edit: Sorry about the tone, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sick of seeing this thread over and over again. Official 4.1.2 will come when it comes, but why not run an 80% functional 4.2.2 today?

X2. There's a fully functioning 4.1.2 that SnowLeopardJB created, in addition to the ones mentioned above. The 4.2.3 roms don't have fully functioning GPS or camera, but they will have them shortly. Synergye's created an AOSP rom, that's using the latest Android developments, that will put this device ahead of the N4, once the quirks are worked out. Reskins aren't ROM's, so leaving that nuance out, what ROM are you looking for that you can't run today?
One addition: If you bought this phone thinking that AT&T was going to support it, you didn't do your research. Apple and Samsung are the only devices that receive any support from AT&T. That's because the former does it's own device support and the latter has enough market share that they can enforce their will on AT&T.

yes i have. i have jelly bean on my LGOG right now and it is fully functional. you're saying there's no support or roms out for this device when that just isnt true. there's even a 4.2.2 rom out that can do everything except camera and GPS. and those will be fixed soon. so what i'm saying is if you say there's little support then you just arent seeing everything in this forum that is out. if you refuse to flash jelly bean on your phone right now then that's the choice you make to stick with ICS. you have the chance to get jelly bean on your LGOG right now, you're just deciding not to.

That was the core of my question. AOSP, AOKP, CM10.1, and ParanoidAndroid are the only major ROMs I've heard of, and we have all but the last one. This is my first Android device, so I wasn't sure if there was really something big we were still missing.
As for why this phone if I knew AT&T sucked? I needed a new phone when there was still no idea when the Nexus 4 would come back in stock, so I got what was thought to be the next best thing. Honestly, with AOSP, this will be even better than the N4 once the GPS and camera are working.
And I can always convert a year down the road when everyone moves on.

Commandments? Are you referring to the Bill of Rights? You do know that that same freedom of speech is also extended to anyone who wants to say you are whining, right?
Anyway, enough of the childish back and forth. As stated myriad times in this forum, as is usually the case, no one knows for sure when we'll get JB from AT&T. We have some great devs working on giving us fully functional CM, AOKP and CFX. Patience is a virtue, and we'll be getting some more love soon.
In the meantime, what's missing from the stock experience? You want Google Now? You can get it. Other than that it's just as smooth as JB.

But when you're opinion is wrong, then that would be considered either a) not knowledgable of the facts, or b) whining...as others have said, if you want 10 different versions of AOSP or CM10.1, or 15 versions of the current kernel, then this may not be the phone for you. I could say that my opinion is that the sky is red, but just because I've stated that's my opinion doesn't make it correct. The current version of JB on this device works 100% and is smooth as any phone I've ever used...ever (and I've had all the latest and greatest). You never answered someone's earlier question...what is it exactly that you want that is not being offered at this time?
You may be new to the phone, but you're not new to the forums. So I'm hoping within the last ~2.5 years you've noticed that there's a search feature. Considering this phone has been out for 5-6 months?, correct me if I'm wrong, this question was bound to be asked several times. If you don't want people complaining about your complaining, then it's advised to look through the forums. Feel free to be ungrateful for what the devs of this community has given us, but it's not like you've made anything. If you're in such a hurry, build a rom yourself.

[Poll] AOSP/AOKP vs. Touchwhiz

Which do you prefer and why?
I prefer stock touchwiz, 100% reliable and the TW camera takes better pictures than AOSP.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
There is already a thread discussing this, though it has been derailed by the asinine "battery life" talk. Why people want to see how many days their phone can go without charging it I don't know.
I prefer aosp, but I use TW more because so far voice dialing over BT doesn't work on aosp and the volume is very low.
The theme engines on aosp as well as the reassigning soft button functions are very nice features.
I hardly use the s-pen or the multi window.
I prefer AOKP (AOSP) simply because of the look and certain functionality... You have a lot more features in AOKP than TW. But it also depends on the TW based ROM you install.. If you like the s-note and multi windows functions of TW you're better off with that ROM but things like ribbons soft keys 4.2.+ only apps (dash clock for example) and general UI themes, if you like that and can sacrifice the volume and the aforementioned calling over BT than AOKP is the way to go.. But over all stability and stock features that identify this phone as a Note 2, then a TW based ROM is what you want.. I recommend Jellybeans ROM
To be honest. It really depends on the user. Samsung spent a lot of time putting in features for their own version of Android. SPen functions that work for the people that use them and extras that keep the phone at the for front of app ability. If you have no intention of using the phone for what it was built for, love the essential specs then AOSP is for you. I myself like the functions and capability of Sammy in this aspect. As a long time HTC lover and Avid Sammy hater, have come to like the built in Samsung features. I love to hate this phone. As a person that is currently with a group of others suing Sammy over the Behold. I actually like this phone. Like all other companies, Samsung has created a very decent hardware phone and the feature set from them has made it work even better. Do I miss my HTC Sense features. OF course. Sense makes phones easy. But I've learned to make it work for me. End result, AOSP is too bland and short for me. I like ANDROID because I can make it my own. Customization is almost as easy on this is the same as others. I don't like Samsung's blatant Apple icon copy, but I know how to make it my own.
I prefer TW
I prefer AOSP, but until there's no gps issues I don't run it all the time. A lot Iof people say there are work a rounds, but I've learned from other phones that if gps isn't 100% working it'll mess up when you really need it even if it has been working. I really love multi window but not enough to overcome everything I hate about touchwiz.
TW until PA3.5 is ported I use multi windows too much and as far as I know the sammy keyboard is the only one that supports one-handed operation AND swype.

And here I thought I was an idiot for buying a Droid Eris for my first Android phone
Dang that Behold is an old phone released in 2008. Here I thought my 2010 Epic 4G is old.
AOSP doesnt show my external sd card
Just to throw out my 2 cents..... Coming from a GNex, I was running 4.2.2 and thought it was great. I was due for an upgrade and got the Note 2. I thought I was taking a step back with 4.1.2, but I have to say, everything just works! No issues with GPS anymore, no battery drain (although there is no comparison to the battery of the gnex next to the note 2). I am reluctant to flash anything 4.2.2, because I don't want to have to worry if the things I need my phone to do for both work and personal use is going to work. I have to say, I would love to flash a couple AOSP roms, they look like they are making progress on the bugs by leaps and bounds, but until I can "count" on 99% of my phone working without issue..... Ima sticking to touchwiz based roms.
I prefer TW because of two main reasons.
1. Group texting
2. Better radio
With AOSP based roms, I get a constant roaming message at home. I don't get service here and have a network extender. Don't have this roaming issue with TW based stuff.
Group texting just doesnt work on AOSP. Yes I have the settings for group texting checked and all that I've read states that group texting works in 4.2.2 but I surely haven't seen it work.

Touchwiz for the fact I need to everything to function properly on my device. I use to play with AOSP alot but these days TW is spot on and all I use. I do like AOSP 4.2.2 on my Transformer...its my new crack flash device.

Lack of T-mobile S5 roms

First and foremost, I absolutely don't want anyone to think I'm complaining about developers or anything like that. I certainly appreciate everyone's hard work when they are putting together roms for any phone.
That being said, I am just curious why there are so few roms for the T-mobile Galaxy S5. I had the S1-S4 for Sprint and all of them had tons and tons of roms. All those roms had lots of theme work and unique items. I am not seeing any of that on the T-mobile side. Is this variant preventing that or is there just not enough love for it?
Just as an example.. check out these rom for the sprint S5....

There is not too much of a difference between two touchwiz Roms. Its pointless to have same thing packadged with different names. I love the couple of options that are available in T-Mobile.

In order for the rom to work with wifi calling it has to retain the touchwiz base, and like ceo.mtcl said theres only so much you can change. There is a CM rom available for the device, i gave it a test run on my G900T. It ran great but without wifi calling its almost useless to me
ok so am i missing something in these roms? none of them look any different than a stock rom. All of the icons are the same, the fonts are the same the notification panel is the same, there isn't any theming (sp? lol). Everyone defaults to use some wanam (which didnt work at all for me), but that's pretty limited. I'm sad in my pants right now lol....

Have you checked the Unified Development section? And yes, since the arrival of Xposed, members can now do a lot to their phones rather than the developer spend 100's of hours themeing all the elements of a ROM and have a post every other day saying "it is too blue". It is comments like that that have pushed developers into saying "why bother". You cannot make everyone happy with how you theme something and members forget that these ROMs are made for the developers, and they decided to share...it is not their jobs and they are not getting paid for those ROMs. But NOW the power is in your hands thanks to Wanam and everyone working on toolboxes to allow you to do more. Not enough? There a several icon changing apps on Play. There is also Themer. Add that to all the awesome flagship phones released almost every 9 months by many manufacturers. A lot of developers have wanted a challenge so tried something new and changed manufacturers. So yeah...you won't see 30 TW ROMs anymore.
Also add Verizon and AT&T with locked bootloaders discouraging developers.

my thoughts exactly, well said Kenny!

While I agree with Kenny on his viewpoint, I see go blues point as well. I, personally, prefer a more pure aosp rom myself. There is a lack of aosp development/releases for our device. I'm still running srock/unrooted, until a solid aosp rom drops, which I believe hasn't happened yet due to kernel development? Icons are themed and running ADW launcher to change icons and themes to keep things clean, but themes are still limited. Don't get me wrong, love the s5, mad respect and thanks to all the devs doing their work, but I see his point. Cheers!

Looks like a lot of the "flavors" of AOSP are covered: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development
My guess is there would be a lot more if the bigger 2 carriers AT&T and Verizon hadn't made AOSP impossible with their locked bootloaders. That would seem to be the main reason for lower development after the S3s.
Reason also is the S5 is not as popular as thought, many were sold, but to users that could care less about doing custom roms, and the age group is probably the younger crowd. The OS is simply awful.
Correct me if I'm wrong, we can probably flash the ones from unified development no?

yes you can as long as you dont care about tripping knox.
But be warned, Make sure you only flash something that is designed for the s5 and something that has been tested and works on the s5.. You can still brick the phone if you make some stupid mistakes or decisions.
Remember that Flashing the phone is your responsibilty. So if you screw up and brick, dont blame anyone for your mistakes. Reading and searching is your best friend, before you flash anything to your phone.
Yeah to flash anything from there you would have needed a custom recovery this tripping the Knox counter.
Even if there were aosp roms for our specific device, I doubt that would be different. Since aosp roms all have custom kernels that would trip Knox anyway

Look 2 posts above yours. I already linked to that section...the answer is yes.
I live in a area where I need wifi calling, so.. I've never had the option to be free with ROMs, really sucks .. what I want, is a Nexus... or a One Plus phone, but I'm stuck.. what can ya do lol
I know how OP feels, i personally will be getting the Nexus 6 when it releases or the Z3 and retiring the galaxy s5
I appreciate the hard work the few devs we have working on our phone have been doing but this is like the galaxy note 2 community imho, i got the phone with the hopes that the community will be like the galaxy s4
in addition to the unified ROM's i have been able to get a ton of these TW roms to work on my tmobile s5 simply by flashing a t mobile kernal right after the rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/development
eh, custom roms

Flash Internation ROMs then?
Only thing you'll lose is Wifi Calling.
