Sorry I can't provide a link (on mobile) but head over to the dev section and you'll see a sticky called Downgrade Hboot. Doesn't matter if you have root or not and its fairly simple.

I think using UnkownForces method of live cd is the best way to get s-off. Downgrade 1.5 to 1.4 n root with revolutionary. Takes 10-15mins and your only pressing a button and reading n following the steps after you brick your phone (on purpose).

Unknownforces method involves linux. It's closeones thread with the live cd you are talking about. It is super noob friendly also. The hardest part is the actual bricking of your device

The short answer is: yes you can, BUT you have to relock your phone first with "adb oem lock". Basically, you undo the work you just did. It's one of the steps in: Downgrade HBOOT thread "(If you are HTC Unlocked, you MUST RELOCK BEFORE starting) " and HBOOT Downgrade Toolkit. The latter has more detailed instructions. Basically when you relock your phone you have to run the RUU to wipe the device and return it to a stock ROM as part of the first steps. Enjoy.

How to lock bootloader(not relock) and s-on for warranty purposes!!!UPDATE HTCDEV!!!

This is my first tutorial so please be kind to me.(sorry if I make english language mistakes)
THIS IS FOR THE GSM EVO 3D ONLY!!!I TAKE NO RESPONSABILITY IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE,ETC...
IN THIS TUTORIAL I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE YOUR BOOTLOADER SAY LOCKED (NOT RELOCKED !!!) AND APPLY S-ON.(IN MY COUNTRY IT'S MANDATORY OR ELSE THEY WON'T REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY)
I DON'T THINK THIS WILL WORK IF YOU UNLOCKED YOUR PHONE VIA HTC METHOD(BUT YOU CAN TRY).I UNLOCKED THE PHONE WITH THIS METHOD:http://mess-hall.co.uk/2012/04/rooting-htc-evo-3d-hboot-1-49-0018/.
1)If you need one make a nandroid backup.(when the phone returns from service you will have all things set up)
2)Download this(DO NOT RENAME OR UNZIP IT) and put it in the root of your sd card.
https://rapidshare.com/files/3836158591/PG86IMG.zip
3)Enter bootloader(deselect fastboot, turn off phone, press and hold power button and vol up button for couple sec). Now it will check for that file and it will ask you if you want to install it.Select YES.
4)After it's all done turn on phone, skip through the first settings, and when the OS has loaded up go to settings>about phone>software updates and update the phone to the latest version.
5)After the update process has completed turn off phone and enter bootloader again.Go to fastboot and connect the phone to the computer via USB.(IT SHOULD SAY FASTBOOT USB).
6)Download this, unzip, rename the folder to something simple(one letter naming,ex: a) and put it in C:\(or the root of any other partition)
https://rapidshare.com/files/2550062005/fastboot_cmd.rar
7)Open up cmd in windows and navigate to that folder(in this example the letter of my partition will be "C" and the name of the folder will be "a").ex: cd C:\a
8)In cmd type "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" without the " ".Press ENTER.
9)Click on restart bootloader and when the bootloader restarts it should say "LOCKED" and S-ON
HOPE I HELPED !!!
UPDATED FOR HTCDEV UNLOCKED MEMBERS
I just recieved a PM in which a user(mmick) thanks me for this tutorial and tells me how he managed to obtain LOCKED S-ON after unlocking via htcdev. You have the message below.
"""
Hi John! Thank you very much for your tutorial to LOCK + S-ON
Mine was unlocked by HTCDev and S-Off by Revolutionay, I did this tutorial and it worked very well!
Here it is
1) I did Power + Vol Down (and used the PG86IMG on the first page, on the microSD) and it flashed good!
2) Then I ran the RUU_Shooter_U_HTC_Europe_1.20.401.2. Then I got "RELOCKED" and "Shooter...S-OFF RL" instead of revolutionary as before.
3) I did Power + Vol Down and entered Fastboot. Then I went to the CMD (Windows) and wrote, on the Fastboot folder "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3". Now I am on RELOCKED + S-ON.
4) Rooted and used ControlBear + Wire Trick. Now it says "JyopunutBear"! (instead of locked/relocked or whatever).
5) I did again step 2 and everything went good!!!
Now LOCKED + S-ON!
I think it could be an excelent idea to pick this and join with your tutorial. This way everyone can do it easily and with no risk
"""

No I am not. You flashed the zip file before that removed the unsigned Hboot (S-OFF).
Then the command is okay. But when you still have the REVOLUTIONARY sign (which means it is a unsigned bootloader) it will brick your device. Try it out if you don't believe me.
I know way more about these things than you do

also your PG86IMG will not work for everyone since the Android-Info.txt contains specific CIDs.

It's clear enough that if you update the software of your from from settings>about that will LOCK your bootloader,so when you will apply that command the bootloader will show LOCKED NOT RELOCKED.it's clearly that you don't know a lot of things.I did this recently(less than a week ago,in the exact order and everything worked just fine)
I don't care about the locked part. I don't say anything about that. Just warning the peops that have s-off and an unsigned bootloader.

Running the RUU will not downgrade. If it did why would they have had to make all of the complex steps to downgrade from 1.50.
Is there a way to make the RUU see the phone as a lower h-boot version without root access by tweaking the RUU exe. just a thought.

Like a previous poster responded, get s-off using the wire trick. It only takes five minutes once you setup. People who have done it wish they would have done it sooner.
Look the bottom line is if you want to go back to H-boot 1.40 you need to S-off.
Countless people in this thread have said that and you refuse to accept the fact your stuck on H-boot 1.58 until you S-off.
I am on relocked 1.58 s-off from 1.4s-off. how do i go about reverting it back to 1.4 s-off?

Download the 1.4 hboot, rename the file PG86IMG.zip (case sensitive) and place it on the root of your sd card. Make sure that the ROM you are running will boot with the 1.4 hboot first. If not, boot to recovery and flash one (the reason I suggest this is if you have an hboot 1.58 ROM on there and flash the 1.4 hboot, you'll get bootloops). Then, boot to bootloader and have it "update" to 1.4. Reboot and remove the file from the root of your sd card.

Bricking the phone with S ON will cause it to enter emmc mode in which an Hboot can be flashed.
But he should change the main version to the lower one before attempting to brick it.
After flashing the hboot, device will have been unbricked, but RUU still needs to be flashed.
It is possible, but whether there is a guide for this or not, I don't know; nor do I know if it is practically possible either.

[Q] Need help! messed up on putting ROM on

so i recently tried rooting and putting a rom on my brothers phone. i have already done mine so i thought it would be easy. i didnt not know of the s-on/s-off concept. so i put on a rom that required s-off on the s-on htc evo 3d. i put a rom on that is compatible with s-on for the mean time. what i want to know is there a way to return to the stock rom, or fix it from here and go to s-off.
HTC EVO 3D from sprint CDMA
hboot 1.58

to add, i am still a newb at this whole thing. if anyone can help please do. if anyone needs more info please ask.

Fastboot USB is what you need to be in. That error code typically means that you forgot to relock the bootloader before running the ruu. It could also mean that you have the wrong ruu.exe. Did you get yours from the zip in ramjet's thread?

[Guide] Quick And Dirty Return to 100% Stock for Evo 3D/V (S-OFF Only)

It seems like the questions about returning to 100% stock are coming up more often lately, possibly because more users are moving on to other devices. Whatever the reason, I thought a simple guide might be useful to avoid having to duplicate this info in other threads and PM's.
This procedure should work for any CDMA or GSM Evo 3D/V that is S-OFF. There is no way to get an S-ON device that has been HTC unlocked back to 100% stock since relocking the bootloader will result in a status of "relocked".
Here are the steps to do it:
1. Flash the "query_bootloader.zip" file attached to this post in recovery. If the status message shows your bootloader is "unlocked" or "relocked" flash the "lock_bootloader.zip" file from the same post to reset it to "locked".
2. Download an RUU.exe (Windows) or RUU.zip (bootloader) file for your model from this page and flash it using the appropriate method.
If you use the .exe version from Windows it works best if you put the phone into "fastboot USB" mode, and you may have to cancel the RUU utility and restart if it hangs after flashing the stock bootloader when you start with a custom hboot installed.
To flash the RUU.zip via the bootloader it must be renamed to PG86IMG.zip and placed in the root of your SD card, and may need to be flashed twice if a custom hboot is installed the first time it is flashed.
I recommend using the latest version for your model but any compatible RUU can be flashed while S-OFF. It's also a good idea to boot the ROM without doing any setup after flashing the RUU to make sure the ROM has been reset to the stock version.
3. Confirm that the bootloader shows "***LOCKED***" on the top line of the screen and the HBOOT version is a stock bootloader for your device.
4. Issue the "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" command from a PC.
Note: Make 100% sure you have the stock bootloader installed before issuing this command or you will brick your phone.
Your phone will now be 100% stock.

Thanks for the nice toturial but i´m just wondering one thing.
If you fail with the command
Code:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
, will your phone get hardbricked or is it possible to flash a recovery and start over again with fastboot?

If that command fails nothing will happen and your phone will stay S-OFF but the odds of that happening are very small unless your phone is not in "fastboot usb" mode when you issue it.
The risk involves issuing that command when you have a custom hboot like JBear or Revolutionary installed because those bootloaders are not signed and will cause the phone to brick. In that scenario you would not be able to get into recovery.

Ok thanks man.
Ok, in the RUU's I can download I have 2 problems:
1) How do I know which one to download? I see a few that have Sprint ICS. I have the Virgin Mobile phone Evo V 4g. Which one would I get?
2) I have already tried downloading a few of them, and each time it stops at a different point and windows says the zip file is not valid. Is there another place I can download the correct RUU?
I need to get this done soon as I have a replacement headed this way.

This is the wrong thread for what you need to do and I posted a link to the correct guide in the thread you opened in the development forum that got moved to Q&A.
When you are ready to download the RUU look for the 2.89.651.2 version.

thank you ramjet for the link. my phone is now 99% stock. The 1% is because of the S-OFF part of the bootloader. It shows it is locked so that's good, but I think that means I can't turn S-ON, as it says in the first post. Oh well, hopefully they will accept it like that.

Which RUU do i use for a Sprint Evo 3?
I'd like to follow the instructions here; you pointed me to this OP in another reply when I asked how to go back to stock, but I don't know which one to use. I'm on hboot 1.50.5050 running CM 10.1 on a Sprint Evo 3D, using "Wild for the Night" and I want to go back to 100% stock, S-ON, unrooted, locked.
Is 'WWE' the US version? I know not to use RUUs for other countries but I can't tell which to use from the list.
(I used the jbear wire trick and have Ext4 installed if it makes any difference.)

Sorry for my english.

This procedure should work for any CDMA or GSM Evo 3D/V that is S-OFF. There is no way to get an S-ON device that has been HTC unlocked back to 100% stock since relocking the bootloader will result in a status of "relocked".

Probably not, since ramjet said that in the OP.

If he has Revolutionary and is S-OFF this guide should work as long as the RUU is available for the model of his phone. That's the only thing that is specific to the GSM or CDMA model.

The hboot doesn't matter, but if you are on Virgin Mobile you need this one.

[Q] s-off and hboot downgrade advice

all explained from the title, recently, my htc sensation screen became dimmed and i having a hard time using it, then i got my mother's evo 3d as a replacement
i want an advice in s-off and downgrading my hboot from 1.53.0007 to 1.49xx , so that i could install and try kitkat and many other rom :good:
1. currently i am already un-locked and rooted my evo 3d
2. if i want to downgrade my hboot, should i s-off my phone first ? wire trick by junoputbear right ? or is there any other way to s-off my 1.53.0007 other than wire tricking it ?
3. in wire trick method, im having a hard time deciding the right tools for doing this, i have a win 7 installed os laptop and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507616 that rom installed in my evo, it is said that i have to be on stock rom, could i just do this on that rom or should i flash other rom ? if its not possible, could anyone show me the right rom ?
4. if and if only i've done all that s-off stuff and so, could i use this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906172 to downgrade my hboot ?
and after that it will be a yadda yadda yadda piece of cakey for me to flashing rom right ?
i'm sorry for my bad languages, trying my best here >.<
The wire trick is what you need to do. On the juopunut Homepage there is a link to a Linux live CD. With this you wont have trouble with drivers, just follow the instructions on their page. Aftwards downgrading hboot will be easy.
Two beer or not two beer, that's the question
i dont really get it, should i change my rom first or not ? in junopoutbear its recommended to 'verify - You are on Stock RUU (not FreshROM, Stock Rooted, HarmonyROM - none of these will work!)'
I had a same situation with you. So RUU is the package to install a stock rom through a pc. Here you can find RUUs. According on your bootloader you own gsm evo and you must download a Shooter_U ics for your area provided on the link. In order to run the ruu you must relock the device in fastboot with "fastboot oem lock" command. After the ruu finishes you can unlock the bootloader again and do the unlimited.io procedure. If your evo is vodafone branded (like mine) your cid blocks the ruu and you cant flash, for this situation I suggest you to flash Yoda ICS and do the unlimited.io procedure, I did it with Yoda.

Before installing ruu try the wire trick with your current configuration.
Just follow the instructions on juopunutbear page.
You may need several attempts to get the right timing.

You must choose an exe file, this:
Code:
http://www.androidruu.com/getdownload.php?file=Shooter/RUU_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_3.28.707.1_Radio_11.77.3504.00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_264110_signed.exe
is the one you need.

Well, the cmd on Ubuntu called "Terminal" you can type it on the programs menu. I think its on the upper left. I never used the last versions of ubuntu, thats why I'm not sure.
