Official ics or not? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Before I start, I'd first like to thank the xda community for all the fantastic work they put into the scene, and this site.
So,I have two questions regarding the SE xperia ray, the first being, should I go for the official ics update? I've searched and searched for peoples impressions of it and come up with very little. I almost upgraded last night, and chickened out; what if it's laggy and buggy like some have suggested? So I'd like peoples opinions on the pros and cons.
The other thing I was wondering was is unlocking the bootloader a no no if you use Sony's official software to update?
The idea being that I can back up my current setup so I can revert back to it (or try custom roms) if I don't like Sony's version of ics.
So, should I just root/unlock and use other methods to install ics, and is it even worth bothering with the Sony version anyway?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Edit: typical n00b ballz up as to where this should be posted, apologies to the mod (s)
Edit2: I'm an idiot who should really know better, found most of the answers I'm after in the Q&A, by all means delete the thread, although I'm still curious about peoples opinions on ics. One again big sorry to the mod (s)

hi
1) should u update to 4.0. the answer, up to you? its your own phone. if its too buggy or you find you like gb better than ics, then use flashtools and downgrade.
2)im pretty sure if u unlock your bootloader (official, setools, setool2) you can still update through pccompanion or update service, JUST NOT OTA. ota is updating straight through your phone. if you do update, u get fota brick.. which imma tell is scary. ummm.. i did that and my phone would not boot up. it was stuck in flash mode and i could not get into fastboot. but if u do your homework, u should be fine.
3) the idea that you can backup? im not sure what question ur asking, or im a idiot and i cant read... (it happens....-_-) you CAN root and install cwm to back up a nandroid, which is literally the exact copy of ur phone. if u instal a kernel and a custom rom and u find out...oh [email protected]#%% its stuck in bootloop, u can always back it up and you would be fine. theortically, i have not tried it myself..
4)ok this is how i think u should root and install ics....
first, i think you should unlock your bootloader. its pretty. i screwed 20 times before actually getting it work. (my drivers werent installed)
then i suggest you upgrade to official ics through pcc
then root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600728
ummmm i personally decided to wait for a more stable version of ics... so what i did was i was on .62gb and i unlocked my bootloader using setools since it preserves drm keys and its free,
then i took flashtools and downgraded to .42...
then i rooted and installed cwm
then backed up nandroid
then im here =D hi
X) <- i forgot what number im on and im too lazy to scroll up...
im assuming ur talking about sonys official website on unlocking bootloader? i suggest u dont do that unless u dont want to pay 20-40 bucks on ur model. if setools supports ur xperia device, then use that because the sony offical method deletes ur drm keys which would cause apps like trackid and video unlimited to stop working...permanantly. even if u relock ur bootloader, ur still screwed =D
hope i was helpful

Newer versions of TrackID still work even after you unlock the official way. The version of TrackID that ships with Sony's ICS update, and which is available on the market, doesn't seem to care about the DRM at all.
To answer the op, ICS has been ridiculously smooth and stable for me. That being said, I didn't spend very much time with the official ICS update from Sony, I don't like what Sony have done with the messages app and so on in ICS, when the stock android messaging/dialler app is so much nicer, so I've been running CM9 and AOKP for the past two or three months.
During the brief time I /did/ run Sony's ICS update, I didn't notice any stability issues and while CM9/AOKP seem faster, it wasn't exactly slow.
I'd say upgrade if you really want to, because you're not going to notice much difference in the overall stability or speed of it, and ICS by itself is downright lovely.

Just got a Sony Ericsson X10 and it has Android 1.6. I want to upgrade to the latest version of android and want to enable features like multi touch.. How do i upgrade my phone? I dont know anything about android and most of the posts here have just confused me
Hi - and welcome..
Go to the Sony Ericsson website and download and install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) to your PC..
Fire that up and follow the onscreen instructions (carefully)..
That will get you upto the latest version of the firmware for your phone..
It may NOT be the latest available firmware though depending on whether your phone is customised by a specific carrier/ network?
If it doesn't upgrade you then look settings and about phone then tell us the country and customisation info in there..
Good luck..
If you're feeling brave you can root it too.. and do a load of other stuff.. (took me a while to build up the courage to get into all that side of it.. but was worth it in the end, cos phone performance can be improved dramatically)!

Greets alamode, congrats on your new X10, and welcome to xda.
First off, it's great to hear that you have at least tried to find a place to start with your Android, and I know it can be rather daunting, as well as time consuming.
- If you're only interested in official Sony Ericsson (SE) Firmwares then you can just simply connect your phone to your computer after having installed PC companion on it
and follow the instructions. This should give you the latest official rendition of Android for the X10 which is 2.1 and includes dual touch.
- If however you wish Custom Firmwares which go well beyond anything that Sony could ever offer than I would recommend after having updated through PC Companion
(above) the next step is to 'Root' your X10 which allows you greater access and control over your device and the ability to 'Flash' (install) the many custom Themes, Apps, and ofcourse Firmwares(ROM)s

Well yeah i heard that rooting/flashing your phone opens up a whole new world for you so im definately interested in that. i've heard Sony ericsson wont upgrade X10 to latest versions of android? Can we still update them after rooting/flashing our device?
Anyways ill update my device first from Sony ericsson then.. After that i'll have to root my device? Since i dont know much about rooting/flashing can someone just guide me as to what that is and what it does? Whats the difference between rooting and flashing?
And thanks guys you lot are helpful !

Trying to update but keep getting this : unable to install or start phone software update components
Try doing a repair first then try the upgrade..
For rooting.. go to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906248 download Superoneclick to your pc and run it from there..
Rooting will give you access to the system files so if you start rooting around in there deleting things then it can be dangerous - but you can always reflash/ repair using SEUS.
Rooting will also give you the opportunity to install custom ROMS which you'll find on the Dev sub-forum.
Would also recommend that you install JIT once rooted, as this gives a big performance boost. You'll find that on these x10 forums too.
Alright.. This is so frustrating. Been trying to root my phone all night but not really able to get anywhere.. Here's what i did..
First i finally upgraded to 2.1.. I used another PC and somehow it didnt give me the error i was getting earlier at the other PC. Not sure what was the problem there.
After upgrading to 2.1 i decided to root. First i used the SuperOneClick file to root my phone. After rooting, I installed BusyBox and then kept installing xRecovery but with no luck. xRecovery would just not install !!! I coped the apk file and ran the install from the phone, I got the icon but after getting the icon when it comes to the installing part it just freezes and after a while i get an error which gives me 2 options, Either to force close or to wait. I tried the other method too, the pushing method using X10ModTool and that didnt work either. After lots of tries and after getting extremely frustrated i uninstalled the apps and tried to start fresh.. I unrooted my phone using SuperOneClick and decided to root using z4root. I got the icon in the menu for z4root and i clicked on permanent root.. My phone restarts but i dont see the SuperUser icon anywhere.. If i try to install BusyBox it keeps on saying that its trying to get information..
So, So extremely frustrating !
Oh and i forgot to mention that after upgrading to 2.1, my Phone seems to have become slower while swishing between screens..
Which build number version do you have as the Superoneclick is for 2.1.A.0.435 and 2.0.2.A.0.24.
2.1.A.0.435
Im just not able to get root access ! Ive tried X10 Flash Tool, Ive tried SuperOneClick, Ive tried another software as well.. I just cant seem to get the root access..
I Installed Root checker and everytime after i root i check and it says that you do not have root access.. :S
help !

Install xRecovery and then you can even upgrade your phone to 2.2 there are some good ROMS available on this forum, you can check this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=617
Thanks. Yeah i have xrecovery installed as well.
What is basically a ROM? From my understanding its a customized firmware? If so, Which ones the best at the moment? I cannot compromise on functionality (as in i dont want that i cannot use bluetooth/camera/wifi or some other feature because of the rom). So basically i just want a stable rom in which i dont have any limitations. Also what is the advantage of using another rom anyway?
Thanks !
Okay.. ran a few of those optimizations and stuff and the phone is running a bit better. Can you guys tell me what is a good Benchmark score for Stock 2.1 on x10? im getting 33.4 MFLOPS right now.. is that alright?
I still am experiencing a little stutter in the menus, so i installed LauncherPro and that seems to have taken care of it.. I dont understand why cant i get the stutter to go away in the original home screen?
Lastly, Another problem ive been having.. My mobile is connected via USB but instead of it charging up, It is very very slowly losing charge. It went from 95% to 89% in around 45-60 minutes. Whats that all about?

For me the best 2.1 ROM so far is bluesparks, it is very fast and stable. Everything works in this ROM.
As for a 2.2 ROM, i just love wolfbreak's CM6.1.3 v4.3. Everything works except for the camcorder. For getting the camcorder to work you can download video illusion from the market. The quality wont be as good though. However this ROM is just too good. Too fast and stable with good animations.

Secondly, If i do install this ROM, Will all my applications and everything be deleted? Is there a way to just simply install the ROM and keep everything as it is?

Yeah, that is the 2.2 ROM I was talking about. Make sure you install the correct one depending on your baseband.
In order to keep everything, make a backup of your apps using titanium backup. You can then restore your apps after installing this ROM. Thats what I did.
Wolfbreak has given another way here:

Ah thanks, I might go for 2.1 cause of the camcoder.. Any chance of a fix for it coming in 2.2?

[Q] Official ICS ... but could we downgrade ?

A simple question, now i'm waiting for ICS, it's a new thing and i have the curiosity to try it, but if it is laggy or slow, not smooth, can we downgrade to 2.3.4 without get some surprise like 0% battery issue ?
This is a must have for who want to try the difference between ICS and GB without unlock bootloader, and so decide to keep one of them.
Thanks

Yes we can downgrade, i had unlocked bl and was running the beta 2 months or less ago, so i want back to locked bl and running GB again damn it was a drama, 1st flash a costum rom and a different kernel, then i relock my bl and then i re update my Neo V with Pc companion, but after that i do it never again

I guess nobody knows that right now
will see what will be happen after a downgrade maybe get some surprises or not all
I went from ICS BETA ( One which sony provided not modded or anything clean) to 2.3.4
No problems
LEts wait and watch
So far with every ICS rom I tried(including ICS beta from Sony) going back to 2.3.4 didn't had any problem. We'll wait and see what happens with official release
OK so I tried it too just today, it works with no problem to go back.
i hope sony will release ICS this week since its already mid-april....
I downgraded from every ICS Rom (Beta, AOSP...) to Stock GB via Wotan Server, without troubles, It is easy... The first time will take long (because it will download the FW files, but after will get just 1-2 minutes. Just connect your phone in Flash Mode and you are done

[Q] Xperia Ray not working properly after flashing and rooting. What to do?

Hello everyone.
I tried rooting my Xperia ray today using this guide: http://mytechencounters.wordpress.com/2012/03/17/root-your-xperia-phone-without-voiding-warranty/
Bear with me, you might find all of this tedious to read. My phone came with GB 2.3.4 build .62 which is hard to root. So as the above guide directed, I downloaded a .42 build firmware, CE(Central Europe perhaps? I don't know) and tried to flash it using flashtool. I disconnected the phone from the PC in between. My phone wouldn't boot. Then I used SUS and updated it to ICS, making the phone work. I then flashed it to GB .42 patiently, and with success. Alas, problems started immediately. Many processes such as media, calender storage, acro etc came up as stopped working. Even after selecting force close they would keep appearing. I cleared the respective cache/data and the notifications stopped. Then I rooted it using Doomlord's toolkit, and updated to .62 via OTA, keeping my root. A few things have changed. The keyboard name is the same, International keyboard, but it is different and I don't like it. Camera is not working. Screen goes blank if I open the camera. Messaging does not work and the messaging app crashes as soon as I open it. No contacts are found, despite importing them again. (They all show up when using the import from SIM option, it says importing is done but they are nowhere to be found). I called someone manually. While calling his name shows up but my contacts is completely blank. Google search is not working and it crashes too. There might be other problems, but I haven't checked. Anything in particular to check? Please help me solve all these issues. I'm glad my phone is rooted now, but it's next to useless due to all this. Please help me.
Great. Even the screen unlock security seems to not work. No slide to unlock. No pattern unlock even though I saved a pattern. I press the power button, the phone just shows the home. No security. How do I fix all this? PC Companion? SUS? And I don't want ICS so I won't use them if that's what they're going to update my phone to rather than fix it.
Do a complete wipe data/factory reset or flash .42 again, if this won't work take it to a service center cause it's a hardware issue

Oh my God. Yet again, a small step proved to be highly useful. I can't thank you enough! :good::good::good::good::good::good:
Side note: I'm thinking about unlocking my bootloader, mainly for installing a custom kernel to overclock and probably for using custom ROMs in the future. I know that I will lose my DRM, so I can't run trackid and timescape. What else wont I be able to run? Is DRM that important? Can I unlock the bootloader with a method that will keep my warranty? Thanks in advance.

No problem, hope it's going well now :good:
1. Overclocking can destroy your phone/phone's hardware. I've never overclocked and I wouldn't do it...
2. DRM are not important and trackid should work with the latest version. Not sure about timescape, maybe with an updated version it works
3. You can just keep your warranty by unlocking with testpoint method. Here is a great tutorial and sony won't notice it, only when your phone is bricked up
But testpoint is just working until a specific build number of the hardware, it should be mentioned somewhere in the thread!

Android 4.2.1? Oh just saw your sig you have CM 10.1. I've heard that Android 4.0 and above versions don't work well on 2011 Xperia devices.
How's it running? Is it better than the stock GB ROM? How's the gaming performance? If that's fine, I might install the ROM in the near future. Also, do you use Chainfire 3D? V6 Supercharger? Any other apps that enhance performance? Sorry for asking so many questions

I think you have gotten a lot of good advice from Mihahn and I just wanted to add some suggestions before you unlock your bootloader...you probably want to get comfortable working with CWM Recovery. It has been a while since I did this on GB but there are a bunch of tools that you can use to put recovery onto GB stock roms and a good place to start is this thread in Ray Dev: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426912
Also before you decide you just gotta have a certain ROM, take a good look at the OP for the ROM....there may be something not working correctly that would be a deal breaker for you....there are some features that only work properly on a stock based ROM. This is particularly true of the Jelly Bean 4.2 build for the Ray....the 4.1 ROMs are working pretty good.....but if you absolutely love the sony camera app then you have to stay on a stock ROM.
Have fun!

[Q] Xperia Sola Firmware and Root question

Hello!
(First at all, sorry for my English)
I have just bought a Sola with 2.3.7 Gingerbread. The phone is fast, and this firmware is very good for me. I tried the ICS on other device's, but the gingerbread better for me. But the main thing i bought it is for the USB HOST. I made a cable, and it's working with mouse, keyboard, and older pendrive. But i.e: 8gb or higher is not compatible, because it's power supply need more power. I saw youtube video with usb hub, that may work, but everyone say,i need to upgrade to ICS and it will work well. I try to read many hours about rooting,firmware-s,and so on. But some things i can't understand clearly:
1. Everyone wrote about root without unlock boot menu. Why is itt better without it? I read many post, when people said, unlock bootmenu lose varanty ,but other forum's talked about it can close back, and waranty wont lose..... Which is the true?
2. I read posts about rooting, but i found only one way, like: put ICS , root ICS, backup rooted files, put back Gingerbread. Is this the only way to root, and keep Gingerbread?
And the waranty is the question. I read the waranty paper of my,but it doesnt contained everything about rooting.
3. Can i save my official (stock) firmware now, when it's original state, and flash it back if i didn't sucess whit something?
The main thing,if possible,i would like to keep Gingerbread. But if someone can propose other way,i will finally reconsider the matter.
Please write, everything could be helpful for me.
Thanx!
Have a good day!

1. Yes it can be done, bootloader can be unlocked and locked. But I suggest u to root without unlocking your bootloader. It's possible
2. Yep, that s the only way to root GB as far as I know.
3. And again Yes u can flash back to GB at any time, but u will loose your data

Dear Pa4ka16!
Thank you for your answer!
Only a few thing's i need to know,if you know the answer's please reply.
I downloaded exactly the same firmware that i have now ,from the web: mt27i_2.3.7_6.0.b.3.184__vodafone europe(universal)
How should i do the ICS upgrade? Download it from web,or let the PC companion to do it? (Because it show me every time i connect to upgrade)
I read post that told,if i upgrade via PC companion, there's no way back roll.
And the last question: after rooting the ICS ,save the files i need, and put back GB, can i use the stock firmware that i wrote upper,or i need custom fw?
The only thing i would like to do,is rooting the phone, nothing custom firmware,or anything else, just the original i have.
Is this possible anyway?
Thank you again for reply!

u could go one or another way, personally I suggest to upgrade with PC Companion because u will get the latest update there. and what do u mean by roll back...? I f u mean that u can t go back to GB that's nonsense, ofcourse u can, only by flashing with flashtool ofcourse.
To root GB u need stock firmwares

Yes yes,I mean "roll back" to put back the factory firmware. I found a post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063029
Now i see,i have to upgrade with PC companion the 6.1.1.B.1.54, after that downgrade to ....1.10 ,then root, and take back the GB. Hope it will work.

[Q] 4.2 rooted but how to update without losing root?

Hello all,
so here is the situation:
I have an xperia tablet z (wifi only, 16gb) with stock firmware 4.2 rooted.
Bootloader is unlocked by default.
I would like to install official 4.3 but how do I do that without losing root?
The OTA does not work, so I will need another solution.
A step by step guide would be very nice. I guess I'm not the only one struggling with this.
Thank you very much in advance.
rooted but bootloader not unlocked and OTA does not work for me ?
I also need some help with this. I want to update to 4.3 via OTA, and still keep root. My bootloader is not unlocked, and I don't really want to unlock it. The update I tried failed (could not install). I understand that flashtool would fix this, but I believe you need BL unlocked.
took the plunge with sony companion even thou i knew i would lose root.
oh man, 4.3 is a beauty. The screen lag has gone, the tablet has become butter smooth to operate. Had this tablet come with 4.3 from day one, it would have been a killer.
I don't know if this would work, but you could try a dirty flash of an ftf through flashtool. Just get an ftf online with the 4.3 ROM, and then uncheck the wipe data option. This won't work on large updates, but this is only a point update so it is worth a try. Actually, come to think of it, I don't think it would be compatible. Try CM and if you love the Sony skin I'm sure you could find a theme. that would run really nicely with that s4 pro under that beautiful display. Sorry, that was a rather unhelpful post!
