I have just jumped into my first ICS rom and one thing I noticed I can not figure out is the new Google Voice Search. On any GB Rom I used, I was able to place a short cut from the draw to my home screen, a simple 1x1 icon. Now that is taken away and the only real option is the 4x1 Good Search bar. I just want a simple 1x1 icon to start just the voice search, not launch the whole Search app with keyboard. Any idea.
I know, I have tried many of the other "Personal Assistant" programs but for simple sending a text, email or requesting to make a call, I have had better luck with the Google Voice Search app. It is simpler and does what I need without trying to have a conversation with me or trying to let me know what else it can do over and over again.
I just took and added the shortcut to my homescreen, and and it works. I think you can long press the search key, and and it works as well. Am I missing something here? I am on Chingy's new effing ics rom. Are you on stock, and or a mod? More info, and I might be able to help.

I am on Cleanrom DE 1.4 and I do not see an option of adding a single icon short cut. This is where my confusion is coming from.
If you have voice search in your app drawer, just long press, and drop it on your home screen. Hope I am helping, and not completely off of what you are asking....

If you don't have it in your app drawer, install it from the market!
Just search for "voice search"
After that, the widget will work and voice text recognition is back.
It is installed, I can place the 4x1 full Google Search box on my home screens, but I do not show Voice Search listed in my apps, though in the market it is up to date and installed. I just can not seem to get a single 1x1 icon set on the home screen to activate the voice search... scratching my head on this one.
Sorry to bump an old thread but I miss the 1x1 widget in GB also.
Any solution?
Doesn't press and hold of search button work for anyone?

Hi, I would like to know how I can toggle Recent App of ICS. It can be shown by long clicking on the home button. The one that has preview because I don't like to be pressing so much my home button as I am noticing improper responses from it. Is there a way to put this as an icon or widget on the homescreen? Thx
Anyone? Tried apps like button savior, etc. But it shows their built-in recent apps instead of the firmware's or samsung's.
BUMP
I know this post is old, but Im trying to figure a way too without using an app or service BUMP\
I found what I was looking for in app LMT using the "invisible swipe gestures" set to top center of screen so that swiping top left is notifications, top right is quick settings, and top center opens recents. This is for anyone who might be searching and happen to land on this dead thread. Any other particular method of shortcut will work if you set it to Activities>SystemUI>Overview.recents is the path to this.

I use GMD Gestures, because my sensitive buttons aren't working. Before, I used CM official inbuilt option that you can change the option sensitive (or back) button for recent Apps. Can really recommend that. Greetings.
So I find that Voice Search is no longer integrated into a button (long press). It also doesn't even have a damn button for it. I have to launch Google Search and THEN launch Voice Search. Please tell me there is an easier way to do this...I don't want another launcher at this time either.

I found an app that's a shortcut, called "GVS" in google play on my pc (didn't see it on th e mobile version of google play for some reason). I downloaded it and put it on the home page...its perfect! .
ICS only uses 3 buttons as the standard, this has been known for a long time.
Just use the integrated Google search bar. I believe it's on the 2nd homescreen. Press the microphone and say what you want to search for, send a text, whatever.
I don't care about a search capacitive button. I know it only has 3 buttons smh. I just want my long press. Its all about hands free texting etc in the car. I dont want to have to switch pages and then find the search button on that page while driving. Guess i'll wait till a Sense 4.0 rom gets it right. Love the fun but this was a step backward for a VERY handy feature. Maybe they are planning to roll out Sense Speak or something soon.
The app I mentioned is a shortcut to Google Voice Search, I put it on the bottom bar (whatever that's called), so it's on every page...you can see it here
I was under the impression a long press on the multi-tasking button would launch Google Voice Search? Is this not the case? In any case, yeah, give it a week or so and someone will come out with a mod for the capacitive buttons like the One X has.
even better, i want the camera button hard press (not long press, which brings up the camera) to be the voice search button. i know i saw a thread on this, i asked for it in another post.
...Soft press i guess can be just a regular search button, if you are into that freaky ish

GVS was banned today. Hopefully Google just has an issue with the name.

There's a mod available for soft press search and long soft press voice search...works great.

Just an FYI on cm10 you can make a longpress set to voice search. I personally use long press recent app button for voice search. Just thought I'd point this out.

Where did the voice search shortcut go? It would have been nice if a long press on the recent apps button brought up voice search. When I'm driving, I want to be able to "call home", or " "navigate to Best Buy". I tried to create a shortcut, but the voice search is not a app or widget, so I have no easy way to get there without multiple steps.

I noticed this too :/ I use the Dragon Go! assistant app and it has the same problem.. The quickest way to get to it is to use the google search widget. It's voice button gets you straight to it.

Yes, that's what I've been doing. Just wish there was a voice search only widget so I could put it on my home screen and not clutter it up, or a long press on the useless recent apps button.
Also, where did the Sound Hound app go? I can create a shortcut, but if I go to the apps area, it's not there! Tried to uninstall and reinstall market Sound Hound and you can't! Total garbage!

Soundhound is under Music now.
found a workaround
I've been looking for this shortcut (soundhound) and a couple others that seemed to disappear from the all apps drawer. The program is listed as installed, but you can't start it easily! This is what I found posted:

I modded mine to use the focus button on the camera (half press of the camera button). Whenever you're not in the camera app, hold it at half press, and voice actions pops up. I'm putting it into a zip right now, link to follow.
I'm sending ian in here to help u all out, he make a key remmaping the focus button to voice actions
Ok, after a long (LONG) day. I've got the zip, and I've managed to get it uploaded. This just makes the focus key (half press of the camera button), act as the search key, outside of the camera app. Hope you like it. Thank ticklemepinks appropriately for getting me to post this

There's a way to bring back the "Voice Search" shortcut. I have it on my dock right now.
Someone at AndroidCentral created a thread about it, but since I don't have that many posts right now to send you guys the link, here are the instructions:
1) Download "QuickShortcutMaker" from the Play Store.
2) Launch QuickShorcutMaster.
3) Do a search for "Voice Search" and you'll get a list of Voice Search Activities.
4) Select the one that has "RecognitionActivity" in the description.
5) Select OK.
6) The "Voice Search" shortcut should now appear on your Home screen.

Thanks for posting this, but since it's not an apk, and I don't think it's a kernel file, I don't actually know what I'm supposed to do with this zip. For the record, I tried changing the extension to apk and that didn't allow it to be installed. My evo is a stock, unrooted one at present.

You have to flash the file via custom recovery. Not something you can accomplish completely stock.

Ah, okay, I just got the phone yesterday and haven't installed any custom recovery yet. I should probably get on that. I ended up with an evo3d on 1.50, and therefore wasn't able to take advantage of such niceties. Thanks for letting me know.
You you possibly map it to a long press of the recent apps key? That would be more practical, think the half press of the camera key would happen too easily.

Well then your problems are solved.
But I'm sure the vast majority of people want it back to the way we became used to it.
I'm not sure if it is possible but I have an idea of a widget:
It's a widget that contains another widget that will auto after a specific condition (perhaps with llama/tasker?)
Examples:
hide music widget of choice if there's no music playing or headset plugged in.
Hide (school) timetable if you're not at that location.
Show GPS/traffic widget if not at home/school/work.
You might think of another great use yourself.
This is just an idea, and since I'm no app developer myself, (at least not yet) I hope one of the great android developers that are on these fora will take an interest in this project.
Sent from my SHV-E160L 32GB with XDA HD
But why hide the widget? That space where the widget that hid the other widget is still unusable because the widget can become transparent, but it can not remove itself from the home screen and then put itself back, since adding widgets is a system level command. And if it could do what I just said it can't, what if you put apps/shortcuts/widgets in its place, where would they go? I might be over thinking this whole idea a little but that's just my two cents. I do have a similar idea now that I read this, though. Use Tasker to restore backed up Nova/Holo/Adw/Apex/Etc, settings and home screen layouts based on what you said in your first post. That is probably going to take way longer to do, but it get the same effect and could probably save battery that way too. I mean, if I make a Tasker profile set up so that whenever I connect to my schools wifi, that it restores a previous backed home screen and settings layout. My phone always dies at school, so my home screen would become blank, with no dock or status bar, and just have gestures set up so that I can still get to my apps (swipe up for drawer, down for notifications, two fingers up for phone app, and two fingers down for messaging). With nothing on my home screen, I save battery because the Launcher does not have to load any thing. Android itself might be a limitation for what we're saying here, but maybe Key Lime Pie could bring us closer to that.

Thank you for the reply, PenguinxEnjoi
I can see now that my idea can be a bit confusing.
I just had the idea to hide the widget when I don't need it so it doesn't clog up my lock/home screen.
If it means turning it invisible I'd like that just as much as removing it. I just don't want to see it.

If this is possible it would totally be an option. Especially since I'm using widgetlocker and nova launcher.
This will probably be done using intents (if it's supported) but I've only begun using tasker (after llama) so I'm still not sure how they work.
Have you found the way to auto hide widgets for example with Tasker?
extension!?
I have been trying to find a way to recreate a menu pop down resembling the app drawer menu on my desktop and yes...there are many hurdles to be made through an auto hide feature. Why there cant be an app writin that works along with zooper pro or uccw (or done internaly themselves) that can acknowlege a widget name and link it to a static bitmap/icon within another widget as in a"press on" action is beyond me. I know that is probably the last thing those two companies wanna do but it would really make it fun for the average joe just trying to create something fresh and different for their own pride and joy. I havent had much luck getting any reaponse on this. Lol obviously due to a lack reason. And no im not talking about the chocolate covered carmel candy. Bit if any of you developers out there want to take a stab at it. Looks like there is a code writtin in a somewhat similar context that i believe could work. In the end. Its us vs. Them. Hope to see something more happen with this.
And of course..i am mot allowed to copy and paste outside links yet. Thanks XDA. but if you type in."auto hide widget" in google it should be the second link you see. Hope someone makes this a reality. Will be watching for developments.:silly:
Pop up widgets from the developer of the sslauncher. Does the trick nicely. Also you can use swipepad with the widgetpad addon. Works nice for me. Widget here, widget gone

you could use overlays (paid version) which integrates in tasker (free version does not)
I f*&#ing hate this stock rom! If anyone could tell me how, or if there is a way by disabling a service, to stop the google search popping up when you swipe past the home button or hold it for a second. Aargh!
Install Google Now Launcher or Nova.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
I have the pro version of nova installed. This has no options to disable this feature
Install Tasker for example. Then if You swipe the home button the popup will show with apps to choose - then choose Tasker (use always) that could do just nothing.
Now if You swipe home button only white circle would appear - that would do nothing.
I should have pointed out that my intention is to stop this circle popping up, so i can use the slimpie controls and disable the navbar completely. I am afraid I am struggling to come to terms with just how limited a stock rom is. Sure I can get root via the sony dev website but at this point I think all the fancy algorithms for camera performance would be removed, as well as throttling for thermal control.
When you Google Search, you find https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
The Irony
I'm using this app to fast lock the screen when I swipe up the home button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
otherwise you can use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
to have more options respect to open google search
Just FYI:
- This is called "Swype up for Google Now" in old Nexus manuals.
- Now in Android 6.0 is replaced for "Google Now on tap".
I don't really know how to disable it.... Maybe trying another Launcher.
Thanks for your input. however the home button launcher will not achieve my goal, and the swipelauncher disabler is comically pointless! It is less a disable function, more so it just doesn't launch my browser, choosing instead to flash the screen at me! It is clear that I will not be sated until custom roms come about with some CM or AOSP goodness. Please hurry devs, I want to love this phone...
I'm a bit late to the party and I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I've just been disabling some apps on my z5c and one of them was the Google Now app (I think it was called). Because the bubble popping up was from the Google now app, it has stopped appearing ever since. Hope to have helped.
Disable the Google App
Yep remove Google Now or I just tried this and works well (you cannot prevent the animation that will still persists, but the action gets revoked the way you have requested.)
