SD Card not accessible from recovery, no Gapps... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Small disaster. Trying to upgrade from 18/04 Hydrogen ICS to the 13/05 build. I flashed the 13/05 .zip in recovery after wiping Dalvik and Cache. Booted as normal, until I found all gapps were dud icons (I did not flash 29/04 version as I thought that I could keep my earlier version). Irritatingly, while USB Mass Storage worked correctly with my PC and I could use file explorers like ES and Astro, when I booted into recovery I could not do anything. I have a nandroid backup from 21/04 which I'd like to restore, but clicking on both 'install zip from sdcard' and 'mounts and storage' just gives an error message saying 'can't mount /sdcard'. I have no clue what to do, any help would be much appreciated...

Please help...
Seriously, does anyone know what to do? My phone is almost unusable, I can barely launch any apps. Is my question so stupid it doesn't bear replying to? Somebody please say something...

Do you actually have a microSD card? If not, use "internal SD card" options.
Also, why are you using "install zip from x" to restore a nandroid backup?

I do have a 16GB external SD. I was not trying to restore nandroid via install zip from SD, I was only saying that originally I wanted to reflash the 18/04 build, and only when I found that this didn't work did I attempt restoring my backup. sorry if this was not clear.
Thanks for the reply. I tried to find instructions for remounting my SD, but a search of this forum didn't yield anything. Perhaps this is the wrong forum

Unless I'm using the wrong method, I can't flash the 'proper way' since the install zip from SD card path doesn't display my SD. I can put the gapps and ROM on the SD via PC, but I can't access them when I disconnect.

I'm not convinced you understand that there's a difference between "install/restore from sd card" and "install/restore from internal sd card". Have you actually tried both?

I haven't, but only because I know where I keep my ROM on my external SD! I have changed ROMs at least five times before on this phone using this method and I am a veteran (if I can use such a hyperbolic term) of the MoDaCo ZTE Blade forum. I hope I know what I'm talking about. Being treated like a hopeless noob gets pretty boring after a while. Fact is, I can't access my external SD inside recovery. I get that my explanations probably don't make enough sense, but I'd like a specific suggestion to my pretty specific problem. Sorry if I come across as a little blunt, I'm just rather frustrated that I haven't found a fix in 3 days...

You hadn't given me a reason to treat you differently, and a lack of ability to do these things on your own for three days kinda goes with the assumption .

Boot your phone, copy files from microSD to internal memory, reboot to recovery, use internal SD options.

[Q] I know, I know, but SEARCH SUCKS

K, Seriously, I KNOW there are threads that are even TITLED "STUCK AT RECOVERY, HELP"
But (especially for a developers site) search seems to suck and I can't find what I want!
Its a simple noob problem. Installed 3d party ROM. Installed new kernel. won't boot and stuck at recovery. Koush's recovery "sees" external_sd card, but doesn't find the ROM I want to flash.
Help? Thanks
ALSO, if there is a better way to search these treads please let me know!
I simply type "stuck at recovery" and it pulls up pages and pages of CRAP where the words "stuck" and "recovery' happen to be used...sheesh.
No Luck For Lazy
Search Does Not Suck. Your Search String Sucks
I'm not sure if you have to flash the kernel. I would try wiping everything and flashing the rom only and see if it boots.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
You should try placing the rom on the internal sd. I could never get the recovery to actually mount the external sd. Not really sure how to get to the internal sd when stuck where you are though. Maybe adb?

Just the fact that you cannot use a wildcard in a boolean search string = the suck.

Explain apps2sd; partitioning

I want to reinstall the Zenexp Rom because it was a very nice Rom but I'm so used to having apps2sd for all my apps. The rom says that if I want to enable it I need to do the following:
" If you plan to use A2SD, you need to create the appropriate partition on your SD card. I recommend: Swap: 0MB, EXT2: 512 or 1024MB. Once you've partitioned, it is highly recommended that you convert your EXT2 partition to EXT3 in Recovery"
I don't know what this means. I managed to save my SD on my computer, luckily I did because I wiped out my whole SD on my phone and had no rom to reboot it to.
So, how do I set this up? please somebody help me. or take a look at the thread and explain it in laymen's term.
i think tnoob puts it in laymen well enough....
1. Boot into recovery
2. Scroll down to PARTITION SDCARD
3.Click On PARTITION SD
4.Click trackball to confirm
5.Select Swap size 32mb is fine
6.Select ext size (I did 768mb you don't have to make it that big)
7.Click again to partition sd card.
8.Go to PARTITION SD menu and choose SD:ext2 to ext3
hope this helpps...

Ok, I'm using the Zenexp Rom and I do a clean wipe, wipe dalvik 3x and reboot into recovery then I pick my Rom from the SD. From there I don't see the list of what you mentioned. I'm sorry if is driving you crazy, but I do appreciate your feedbacks.
I don't know which recovery build I am on, being that I'm a newbee. I have to step out for a bit and I'll be right back. thanks again.

when you go into recovery and your on the main screen, somewhere on that screen will be your image build....
I checked on google how the image screen looks like and my screen does not have those options. I think its because I don't have the actual original system backup. I always have to load a rom in order for my phone to work.
this is a screen shot of somebody elses but its the same looking screen I have:

It doesn't matter one way or another which one you use to format your SD card. The only thing it will do for your ROMs is if your ROM supports Apps2SD (not the Froyo-native A2SD), or you can flash/add Apps2SD to your ROM after the fact (some you can't), then you can have even more apps because ALL of your apps will be on the Ext3 partition on your SD card. Note that Froyo has problems with partitioned SD cards under most typical circumstances, so if you want that, then search for a thread (probably in the first three pages) in the Eris Dev forum about partitioning your SD card for Apps2SD use under Froyo.
In case you don't know already, the difference between native-Froyo Apps2SD and the other is that Froyo lets you move individual apps to your SD card, your SD card doesn't need to be partitioned at all (just one big FAT32 partition like normal), but some apps don't support being moved to the SD card, whereas the other Apps2SD, every single app can and WILL be on your SD card whether you like it or not.

ok, I managed to put Amon's RA and able to use the partitioning menu. I got that so far. Now, I have an issue when I reboot I have an icon on the top left hand corner, when I drop down the menu its telling me that the SD card is safe to be removed. I don't get it. I want to hook my phone up again to my computer to load the rom I wanted but its not reading the SD card. I can't flash or load a rom cause its not reading the card or any zip files.
did I do something wrong? Please help. thank you.

Can't find ROMs on SD Card

Hello all, I searched but couldn't find an issue that matched mine.
I rooted with Odin and Superoneclick, and I have CWM Recovery 5.0.2.3. Been trying to flash ROMs from my SD card using CWM. I put the ROMs on the root directory of my SD card.
If I choose "choose zip from sdcard" I get what looks like the root directory of the actual phone, so I tried "choose zip from internal sdcard" and I get the error "E: Can't mount /emmc/"
To clarify, I have my music on my SD card and I have no trouble accessing it to play music. There is nothing else on it but music and ROMs.
Any help?
can you see them in file explorer? I always save them to a folder "ROMS_Kernals" I placed on the on the the internal sdcard ... /mnt/sdcard/ROMS_Kernals
Do you have USB debugging checked in developer settings? Not sure if that matters. But I think it might.
Also be sure its unplugged and not mounted to your PC.
i'm no expert but these are the steps i'd take.
Mine always end up in /sdcard/downloads - but I guess if you cant even see the mounted card dont matter where they are... Can you see your storage in kiesAir and verify the files are there?
File Explorer helped, I got it working, thanks a ton. MIUI and Litening both flashed with no problem, but I'm bootlooping CM7 so I'm looking into that.

For me hdmi out is too much to lose with cm7. I hope they can incorporate that.

New to S II, NOOB QUESTIONS

Ok i am new to this phone, just some questions. I am coming from NEXUS S.
First of all, I flashed CWM 4.0 using ODIN, so how did it update itself to 5.0??
Second, with 4.0 I dont have any problems, but with 5.0.2.7, how do you mount internal memory??
What is emmc, efc etc. In nexus S, it just used to mount internal memory because it never had a slot for micro SD. But since this phone has internal and additional SD slot, maybe there is a way to mount internal memory too on CWM 5.0? On 4.0 i just select mount USB storage and it mounts but not on 5.0. It just says - "unable to write to ums lunfile". How do you guys mount storage to flash roms???
Also, I want to do a complete clean install on this other ROM. How can I flash everything from 100% clean??
Also, on this other ROM, the apps were being downloaded automatically from saved settings under google account. Then all of a sudden after a few apps, it just said - ERROR DOWNLOADING. No more space left or something....but I had lots of space though...whats going on here???
Please help me with this issue, I will be really thankful.
Sorry, don't mean this to come out the wrong way, but, Please search the forums with the search bar, also faq in general and q&a etc. first. Google will help also.
After that, come back and ask, most more experienced users will then be willing to try explain if able.

I can't answer your first or third question but I'll answer the second one. In order to get a fresh install, you need to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe system. After that, then you can flash the ROM you want.

When you mount the phone via CWM using USB Storage or when you use a file explorer inside any ROM, you can find under /sdcard the internal memory of the phone and under /sdcard/sd_external the SD card in the phone slot (if you have one SD inserted).

Reboot on CWM with the ROM install zip in the SD card and delete /cache /data and /system, and install the ROM.
As for the other errors, I would suggest you see if the internal memory is really available or the ROM is using it for other purposes...

USB Bricked

So today I went into the bootloader (By accident, meant to tap reboot into recovery) I pressed the down button one too many times and I deleted storage. Afterwards I went into recovery (4ext 1.0.0.5 RC7) and after an attempt to flash CM10. I receive the error message "Can't mount Internal SD card." The external SD card works just fine. I'm hoping I can get this fixed and after I do you can probably expect another thread for some other problem

I think something similar happened to me where it didn't mount the internal SD no matter what.
I trie dformating it, partition it, nothing worked.
I fklashed stock RUU (that did it) and started from the beginning.
So try putting stock ruu in ext SD rename it PH85img and let bootloader update it.

yes flashing back to stock may help fix the corrupt file system.. then again there's a super wipe script posted somewhere... (not the one from android hd.. krook6023* posted it) if you look in the q&a about 2-4 pages back you might be able to download that and flash it... it also re-partitions the phone and fixes any errors in the file system..
