[Q] Best FREE music player for 2.3? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've used a few media players, and they all come up short somehow. So, I'm wondering if we can get an ongoing discussion of people's favorite music players.
FREE only, I don't care if PowerAmp is the best, I'm not dropping five bucks when there are decent free options. And there are decent free options if we look. Supporting developers is cool, but we chose an open platform to have choices, not to be shoehorned into a one-size-fits-some solution. Also, we know PowerAmp, PlayerPro, and DoubleTwist Premium are the best. There's no need for a lively conversation about the best paid music app. Just pick one of those and you're okay.
Amazon MP3. First non-stock media player I stuck with for any amount of time. Decent player but kind of barebones. Nice if you have music in Amazon's cloud (I do).
MIUI player. Found on XDA somewhere. Decent, but ugly (black and white). Had something else wrong with it, I forget what.
Cloudskipper. Has an EQ, but lives up to its name -- for some reason, it skips, like your phone all of a sudden has moving parts. Imagine a first-generation CD player in a truck that's gone mudding and you wouldn't be far off. Also, it purges its playlists every so often (every time new music is added to the memory card, I think).
Songbird. Currently using this. So far it's alright. Open source, so there's that.
Basically, I need the player to let me make a playlist and shuffle it. That's my core requirement. I don't want all the music on my phone in the mix, just most of it. Eventually I will make various "channels" like hard/fast and soft/slow, maybe a country-only playlist, etc., but for now it's just "Favorites". Wouldn't mind an EQ but it's not necessary. And it's got to display the metadata. I spend an ungodly amount of time getting that right. Album art, artist/band, album, title at least. Year and genre optional.
P.S.: Why do so many players make it so easy to accidentally set a song as a ringtone? Do they get paid every time you do this or something? (Yes, I know that sounds stupid.) Who wants a whole song, not just a 30 second clip of one, as a ringtone? If it's got an awesome intro ("Joker and the Thief" by Wolfmother springs to mind) maybe, but still, wouldn't you wanna crop it down first?

Try doubletwist ® player,
It's got iPod functions, for free!
Samsung Galaxy Gio
CM 7.2 20120325 (thanks 2 phiezx)
XDA Premium
Dont say 'thanks', just press the button

DoubleTwist is not free. There is a free version, but it is heavily crippled. It used to only charge extra for syncing, now it says you have to pay to see album covers, even the ones embedded in the file (though, it offered to let me see three for free!). What a crock. I actually tried it earlier today and was disgusted by how far DT has fallen. It used to be a good app.
I'm only interested in FREE music players. The old DoubleTwist would have been fine as the Pro feature is not one I need. But metadata support is a requirement, as I said. And if it has an EQ, that has to be on the free side -- another feature DT wants you to pay for.

Just for the record, poweramp is not the best,
(it's extremely quiet, voodoo louder has no effect on it, the gui is terrible, it lacks many useful features, and so much more)
Anyhoo, try Xplayer, it doesn't have all the features you might want, but the music quality is level with PlayerPro, the gui is pretty, but as I said, it lacks a few needed features.
You may also want to try;
N7P
Rocket Music Player

If you say MIUI player is ugly, there are a lot of themed ones. You can try UberMusic, a WP7 style. I personally use Xperia S music ported, see if that works for you

UberMusic and N7Player are not free..!
Curious about the Sony one. I used their launcher briefly. It was nice but light on the options.
I didn't know the MIUI player had themes. It was just black and white. I'm trying to remember what my problem with it was, because I loved it at first. I think it just had "favorites" of its own, songs in my Favorites playlist that it would play daily, and that playlist had 150+ songs. So even though my commute is half an hour, there is no excuse for it to play the same 2-4 songs every time. That isn't what shuffle is, it needs to be totally random.
XPlay is pretty ugly, but it says it has themes. I gotta hand it to 'em, they could have gone with black and grey like everybody else, but they went with orange on light grey. It's a bold choice. I might have to check it out to see what else they did differently. (Also, I'm old enough to remember when the cool electronics were silver, before they were white and beige, which is before black. 70s/80s, 90s, and 00s/10s respectively.)

Just get PlayerPro. I doubt at this rate you'll find a free music player that you like.

Moodagent is very good and it's free.
I like "cubed" too. (In Google play appears as a "3")

I was going to recommend cubed too. It's pretty decent. My only real complaint would be the lock screen controls don't seem to work perfectly for me (I press the lock button and my normal lock screen appears, then disappears, then I have to press it again to get the lock screen controls to show). But that may just be my phone.
It's certainly a nice player.

I think that the best music player and 100% free is Stock android player + beats audio* + xloud* and maybe any equaliser - but xperia s stock player has equaliser so i cant give any examples of good ones.
*both are ported for android 2.3, just look for thread and zip file to flash

You're right, but we shouldn't forget that is "beta"

I forget what I didn't like about cubed. I'll have to try it again.
And I resent the implication that pirating a paid app is a valid solution to being dissatisfied with a couple free apps. There are so many free choices.

Never mind, cubed is cool. It doesn't have the playlist support I want but it will be cool on a road trip to quickly queue songs when we don't want a dumb playlist to pick for us. Thanks for that recommendation.

Best player for straight forward listening and quality?

Can you guys recommend me one (or some) of the top media players for music? I've read many reviews but many players seem to be bloated with unnecessary things like online music/radio, syncing, lyrics, and other things that I don't personally need. All I'm interested in is something that presents a very nice UI, is easy to use, can create a now playing list (unlike Ipods..) and can enhance stock sound quality.
From reading, I think my best bet so far is Poweramp but I was just wondering if there were any good free ones out there or others I might want to consider.
Thanks!
edit: Also, to go along with this, I'm interested in what I can use to transfer/sync music from my computer to my phone. With wp7 Zune made it very easy to drap and sync, see what was already sync'd, etc.
If you had a Zune, you might like Ubermusic

I just downloaded the trial and am testing it out now. Yeah, its really good.comparing it with the stock player on my wp7...there's no comparison.seriously impressed. I don't have an sd card or case yet so for now I'm sticking with my windows phone for music at the gym but I will almost definitely buy this app as soon as I do get my full library up on here.
There's no way to use the zune software to communicate with my phone to sync is there? For now I used windows media player to sync but am wondering if there are better options...

I use double twist. Has a nice UI and works well enough for me.
I also just downloaded N7 which is getting fantastic reviews. I only have one album on my phone so kind of hard to really see how it works. Reviews are stating it's better than power amp. So far I like power amp better... anyone try both?
I have both and poweramp wins hands down
Does stock music app already have the equalizer there in settings?
I, in general, hate to use any third party apps that do almost the same as stock unless i removed stock app.

Poweramp is a great app. I tried them all and lucked up Poweramp when it was first released. It is well worth the price. The development has been spot on with ongoing support and regular updates..I I have used it across multiple rooms Samsung stock captivate, cm7, cm9, gnotes gingerbread and have never once noticed a glitch or incompatibility of any kind. The sound reproduction is excellent. I use it for audiobooks and to play podcasts downloaded with dogpile... The ui is intuitive, and still offers tons of tweaks and optimizations... Then there is the fact that the ui, as anything well designed tends to be, is down right elegant and a pleasure to use. Seriously, you will not regret the purchase.

I like Rocket Player because it works well with isyncr and isyncr wifi. It's free in the basic version and $2 for the unlocker which has more features.
Rocket Player is new but it promises to give Power Amp some competition.
Power Amp is no doubt the best but I don't need all of its features.
PowerAmp might be better than it used to be, but I think Player Pro is the best one on the market right now. It looks great, it's not some custom crazy interface (hello PowerAmp, even though it's a little better in 2.x), easy on battery, great widgets, lots of updates, the browsers are great looking and easily configurable, etc..
player pro
i use player pro it does the same a poweramp . excellent quality eq
I have tried literally everyone out there. Poweramp, Player Pro with the dsp options, n7, google music, the stock music player, installed beats audio etc. The best all around player would have to be a tie between power amp and player pro (with the Dsp addon)... but if you are into some serious sound quality and you really like tweaking and personalizing your sound use Neutron Music Player. It is seriously underrated, but the UI is kinda funky and it doesn't organize your music very well.
I just tried player pro and compared it with power amp. Player pro is nice, I love the interface but it still doesn't sound quite as good as power amp, even with the dsp add-on IMO. It's a shame because I really like the interface on player pro much better. It also seems to run smoother within android.

[Q] New Android user: I need advice about a good music player

Hello Everyone,
I just recently switched from an iPhone 4S and to a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. So far I'm enjoying my experience. I experimented with Android in the past by buying a Nexus One when it was first released. Didn't enjoy the experience for a few reasons, but my main concern was with the way Android handled music. We're talking Eclair and Froyo days, now.
Recently, I ordered a beat-up, used Nexus One to travel overseas and found that Gingerbread had ironed out a lot of the music woes than it's firmware predecessors had. Mainly, the "unknown artist" thing, that I couldn't find any help.
Right now, I'm searching for a good music player that has specific features. Remember I'm an iOS user, and some of this stuff they had in their stock music app. Right now, I'm using "Android Music", not "Google Music", mind you. The reason for this, is because I'm familiar with it from my N1 days. I know there are better apps out there, but I don't want to download 100 apps that don't do exactly, or at least mostly want I want to do.
So here's the meat of the conversation, I'm looking for a music player that can do the following:
1. Transition between songs to be seamless, if the song is meant to blend into the next. (I don't want a stuttering version of Dark Side of the Moon)
2. Audio ducking. When I receive a message or an email, the music player I have now stops the song entirely. It's a jolt especially if you're driving and really annoying. This app needs to have audio ducking.
3. The ability to have voice control. I want to be able to hit the google mic button and say, "Play "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead" and it will play (sort of like what Siri does). But, as of iOS5, a huge annoyance I had with Siri is that she played JUST that song and didn't transition to the rest of the album. I've been testing beta 2 of iOS6 and it looks to have been fixed now. But I want that iOS6 feature with voice control. I know there are apps that do that, because my GN says there are when I try to request a certain song.
The rest of these are nice, but not deal breakers:
4. Perhaps a way to play audible formatted audiobooks? I'm not sure of the Android Version of the Audible app can download them offline, but I'd love to continue my audiobook addiction with Android.
5. A good, easy to use UI. Going from a 3.5 inch to a 4.6 inch phone is a big transition. I drive a good distance to work, and I want to be able to change songs and such without pancaking your grandma.
Those are my requests. I know that the Google Music app seems to have replaced the old music app that I'm using, but I don't want to use Google Music as my main driver. For a while now, I've been uploading to GM and I know there is an ability to download them offline. It's cool feature if I'm in a bunch, but I don't want to have to do that all the time. I like keeping a significant amount of songs on my phone at all times, and I don't want to have to scroll through a bunch of stuff I'm not currently listening in heavy rotation. It wastes time and remember, your grandma's life is at stake if I'm behind the wheel.
It sounds sort of picky, but I'd expect that from a lot of Android users, because I was picky on iOS. I jailbroke the very first iPhone even before it had an app store, and I did it every time I had the chance. I love options. At this point it seems like the stock app for music on Android is not cutting it for me, but I know there are options out there. Please advise, and thank you very much for your help, and reading my ramblings.

Power amp vs player pro!

Hey guys I've been using player pro on my Android devices pretty much since release but It's getting to the point that I would like to see what else is out there. Power amp all the way, the best graphic equalizer out there, with pre-amp as well
Poweramp all the way.
Functionality is superb .
Only gripe is album art, 99% of them have art on Windows media but only about half come up correct the rest just pick randomly.

I never tried Player Pro..
All I can share here, I tried default google player, default music player from samsung galaxy s3, and also jetAudio plus, no one can beat PowerAmp, for me..
I purchased the license, and never regret that..
U should try the trial version..
I'd pay at least double again to keep using power amp.
Power Amp for me, as it has the ability to keep the screen alive. So when I'm driving, i can glance at the handset in the cradle and see what's happening.
I like PowerAmp and I think it's the superior player overall, but I use PlayerPro for one particular reason - You can set it to only list your music by Album Artist in the library, rather than Artist, which is great if you have mixtapes and compilations.

playerpro has got a nice damn ui
playerpro +ics skin + dsp pack >>>>> Poweramp > Apollo > Stock > Others
poweramp 4 T W use it since i got my first droid!
Poweramp is an extremely well build music machine and uses its own build-in amp. + skins..
Playerpro has an easy UI and got an external dsp manager(dl. via market) * skins
Both perform very well and its a matter of taste.
Neutron is another music player(maybe the best) but very clumsy UI and hard to set up,because its has so many options..
My favorite is poweramp

I use Mortplayer!!! it has great options!!
Poweramp has the ability to read my mind...just has an awesome shuffle! just wish it worked like it use to for me. since flashing all these JB roms, dlg4 dlh4 dlh8 & li1now, all my playlist i create keep getting erased-or all the songs in the playlist are removed from the lists. very frustrating. have been searching xda for days. have no fc or issues otherwise with PA.
Hi!
I have a question about these two players and also Winamp Pro. I was using MortPlayer till now, but now it's time to change my player. I tried Winamp Pro, it's great but sometimes I find it slow when browsing folders (I have a 32 GB SD card full of music). SQ is great.
But the most important thing that I want to know is which of those uses the least resources (CPU and RAM)? I have Xperia X10i with ****ty stock gingerbread (2.3.3) (is not rooted) and I have problems with twitching, which is just going on my nerves.
Thanks
I like poweramp and I bought it a while back, though I seem to prefer a more clean/basic player. I think I like Google Play Music as a music player.

with power amp you can select different buffer sizes which should stop skipping(I presume that is what you meant by twitching?!)
I tend to go between the two. I prefer poweramp but player pro is very good - I might well go back to playepro for a bit.

Yes. Sorry, I'm not a native english speaker so I'm using google translator very often My music skips when I have less than 100 MB free RAM, and sometimes it skips all the time, but mostly on screen lock/unlock. I'm currently playing with PowerAmp and I think that I will use it as my main music app. I set the priority to highest and enlarged buffer size so no skipping for now. I will try it for a few days and probably buy it.

The sound in Pro Player is a little bit strange, while listening on my hi-fi. I gave up from Winamp Pro because I get force close very often. And PowerAmp seems to use less RAM (28MB) instead of WinampPro (34MB). But one question; poweramp doesn't have exit, so when I stop the music and "exit" from player, it's still in running apps taking 18MB !??? Is it possible to exit power amp so it's not anymore in running aps? I don't want my player to run in background while I don't use it!
EDIT: double fail! I came from Google and didn't see that this topic is for Samsung. Fail 2: I forget to turn on DSP in Player Pro. I think I will use it for now. Thanks!

Recommend me a musicplayer

I didn't know where to post this but oh well. I currently use the stock music player that comes with the galaxy s2 but one thing I don't like say you're listening a playlist and a song then close the app and reopen the it will not be at the song or time you closed the app. So can someone recommend me a decent music player that doesn't have bugs and has the feature above?
the best of the best is poweramp with stylish design and tons of features and if you like it (which i'm sure you will) you should consider buying the full version un-locker
I like doubleTwist. It looks good and it's functional. It's free unlike PowerAmp(which is good too!)

[Q] Please help finding a music player

I have a question about players.. it seems it *should* be simple but Android does not seem able to handle it.
Music is important to me.. so important, i am considering returning my brand new Note 2 and eating the restocking fee.
I am looking for a music player on par with iOS basic player. Before the flame war begins, hear me out.
1. Most important feature. This one is the deal breaker. (if i find this, i can forgive the rest) MUST be able to sort Genre by artist. Before you say Mixzing, I will tell you it does not. If you go to Genre, then it shows artist. If you click on the artist, it shows ALL songs by that artist.... not just the one in the genre you picked.
Why do i need this? I'll give you an example.
In iOS if someone wanted to to play, Green Day (for example). They could:
a) play ALL the Green day music by going to the artist section, or
b) they could play only their favorites by going to genre, (favorites) then Artist (green day) then all their favorites are there without the ‘not so good’ songs.
I am sure I am not the only one that likes to play ALL the music by an artist on some occasions, while only their favorites on other occasions.
Aside from doing it the way it is done in iOS as outlined above(having the Genre list break down into artists and albums) maybe another (dare I say better) way to come at it would be a filter that could be accessible from anywhere that would let you select “show only 5 star” or something. So you could play all songs by an artist by going to the artist tab; or you could play only your favorites by going to the artist tab, hitting the “filter” button, then selecting ‘show only 5 star songs’ or something to that effect. That would filter the rest out.
I told you the first one was a big one! now the rest:
2) Speaking of stars.... Android doesn't seem to support them. Sure they can be viewed and adjusted in some players... but why? You can't sort by them, set up playlists based on them, or use them in any meaningful way.
3) 30 second rewind like in iOS. Seems simple enough. Yet deceptively hard to find.
4) This is another deceptively easy one... Why does the scrubber on ALL android music players show the play-time on the right of the scrubber, and a STATIC track length on the other? Again with iOS.. iOS shows the time left on the right. Seems easy, right? good luck finding an Android one that can do it.
5) a playing "X of XX" tally. on a playlist of 6 songs, it would be like a "now playing" 4 of 6. Seems easy.
I am by no means an apple fan-boi. I did, however come from the ipod touch. So i am used to the Apple way.
The funny thing is, everyone says Android is better because there is so much choice..... I would LOVE to choose one that does the above. It doesn't seem to exist.
please help!!
give power amp a try. i love it and it is very customizable.
I'm sure apple has patents on all those things.
Seriously, if you were that happy with the ipod touch, just get an iphone instead of learning a new app.

Thank you so much for the quick replies. I love this forum! very active..
Thanks for the link to PlayerPro. I actually already had that one. It doesn't do the main thing i want of a player though. There is no way to filter results of Genre by Artist. Unless i am doing it wrong. Can you advise on that? (see item 1 on my list in original post for a better elaboration of what i mean)
Still playing with poweramp... it is VERY close! love it so far, thanks for the tip guys.
Maybe someone can clarify to make it do EXACTLY what i am looking for.... When i go to Library at the bottom, I choose Genres. Then I choose the genre i am looking for... lets say Favorites, as in my original example.... then the Genre Albums pops up. This is very good... to make it perfect, is there a way to make it show Genre Artists instead of Albums? In my example of Green Day, it would shows up under Genres, Favorites, but there are several Green Day Albums that have songs listed as favorites. As is, i can play each album separately, but i would love to play all of the Green Day ones at once.
Again, thanks guy.. i hate to sound nit-picky about this, but i am just trying to get it how i want it.... i listen to about 6-7 hours of music a day in my car while working.
you guys are life-savers.... Tomorrow is the last day i had to turn my Note 2 back in and get an iphone. the ONLY reason i would have done that is for the music.
that's one (and only one) of the beauties of Android, for every request for a player or a function, there's 10 different players and opinions. keep searching, you'll find one. I wouldn't return this phone for 2 iphones. Android is my fav and this sammy is by far the caddy of phones right now, with nos and flames!

I would. Then I would sell both iPhones and get two Galaxy Note II's.
