Retrieve data from water damaged phone - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I jumped in a pool when may daughter fell in. My phone was in my pocket.
Now the phone is not powering on. I did let it dry. Put it in rice and all that. I have lot of photos of my daughter on the phone and I was wondering if there's anyway of physically accessing the internal memory to get the photos.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the photos?

If you can somehow get your phone to power on i can certainly help you out. Broken screen...no problem...damaged usb port...well consider it impossible.

I would expect these things to survive a brief pool-dunking. I suggest you let it sit in the sun for a while with cover off and all cards out. If it is still dead, I suggest sending it to the unbrickable mod guy. If he can't bring it back, probably no one can.

Thanks. I can't get it to power on at all. Who is the unbrickable mod guy?

Google unbrickable mod by Adam Outler...there is a thread in vibrant development section also

Naaa unbrickable mods not gonna save a burnt mb
Theres no reason for it to.
You can try a diff battery, boot while holding recovery combo, then navigate the menus blindly to usb storage and plug your phone into comp.. maybe youll get lucky and its just dead screen
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.

Oh but before you waste your time chasing ghosts, i just realized that if it is just a dead screen, you could just 'turn it on' and plug it in and the comp should say something about found hardware.. just make sure you have it completely off, ie take batt out for a couple secs, then put in and hold power button for a reasonable ampunt of time.
Good luck
Oh and one more thing, as a last resort, you can try booting uup the phone wwith the least amount of part plugged in.. the water may have damaged aa part which may now be shorting it and inhibiting boot. I would say that if possible, boot it just mb and power button and usb port (idk if its a separate module)... maybe if youre lucky, you can do what i said with the recovery-> mount usb storage like that
Again good lluck
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.

The unbrickable mod guy clearly knows vibrant hardware. If he can't get your data from the phone, then it probably can't be done. If you sent him two phones, he could probably move the flash memory chip to the live phone. Maybe Samsung could also do something. Probably cost more.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have tried connecting it to the computer etc but no luck. I'll try some other suggestions in this thread.
As always this community is very helpful.

Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Hello All...I just wanted to let you know that I managed to retrieve data from my phone. After staring at my phone in dismay for 2 weeks I gave up. Until today when I happened to put another battery in my phone. To my surprise the screen showed some lines but the phone was still unusable. I then downloaded a lifesaver of a software called Android Commander and could access and copy the files from the phone.
I hope this information helps someone.

If you can use your iPhone again, you can try to sync the data to iTunes after connecting to pc. But if you can not use it, you just can recover the photos from your iTunes backup. The best is that you did backup b4.

FIRST thing you need to do is turn off your phone, dry it out and put into a bag of rice for 24 hours.
then you can try to use a data recovery tool to get back the lost photos.

Read the post before you. Take his advice. Problem was solved. But yes. Leave it in rice and it coaxes the Chinese people to come and fix it for you.

[Q] broken screen, memory full of baby pics an vids please help

Well, my son's mother had just sold me her extra vibrant, which included the 2gb sd card that came with it. But before she did that, she moved all her pictures and movies onto her own vibrant. That same day, before she could move all those pictures and videos onto an brand new sd card, she accidentally dropped her phone and the screen got destroyed, as in it won't turn on and is just black now.
Ordinarily we wouldn't have cared because she was going to send in that phone anyways and cancel her contract, unfortunately the pictures and videos she moved onto the phone's memory were of our first and only son, about a years worth. When he was born we didn't have a camera or camcorder, so the phone camera was our only way of capturing those early days, so they are extremely precious to us.
I'm sure it's just the screen that is broken, not the rest of the phone, so if there is any way to FORCE MOUNT the phone to my computer, please shed some light to that.
Or if I could do it through ADB using the PUSH/PULL commands, which I'm sure I could, I just need some instruction on how to do that. I'd want to pull the whole picture/video directory onto my desktop or something along those lines.
I have a PC and a MAC which I could use, so PLEASE! if there is any way I could recover those pictures/videos, please help out and let me know.
Thank you A LOT in advance

So from reading this the precious pictures are NOT on your external sd card (the small black card) or internal sd card, the one you can pull out. If the pics and vids are on either of those you can just take them out and buy a device where you can just plug those cards into your computer. Otherwise just get the screen replaced... I'm sure a Tmobile or even maybe a Best Buy store at a mall could replace the screen for a small fee so you can get your pics back.
OR, I'm pretty sure a tmobile store has some special equipment to extract data from your phone.. Just gotta ask!
you're correct,
she moved them from the SD card to the phone's memory when she sold me the phone. She dropped the phone before she could move them back to a fresh SD card.
The thing with that is, she was going to send in that phone because it had a small defect, (I bought the extra phone which came from the insurance or whatever because she was going to cancel the contract with the 200$ i gave her the new phone and start up a new contract), so we have until Wednesday to recover the pictures, because she has to send in the phone then.
And thats a good idea, I'll stop by tomorrow at a t-mobile store and check,
but if i could still do it tonight that would be awesome!

hmm is the screen shattered or just black? also when you cut the phone on does it ring and stuff? if the digitizer still works then you can just press home,so that you know your at the home screen. then connect the it to the computer. then make the gesture that pulls the notification bar, then connect your vibrant as well so that you can tell what part of the screen needs to be touched on her vibrant to mount the sd to the computer. that should work. i had a psp with a cracked screen but i was still able to navigate because i knew where everything was by heart lol.
shattered and black lol, and i believe she told me it doesn't ring anymore, i'd have to ask her in the morning. But yeah thats the first thing I tried when i went over today to try and fix it, which is why I'm thinking using the ABD commands in the only way to do it now

You need to enable USB debugging if it wasn't done previously to use ADB.
I hope you recover your pics. If worst comes to worst you will need to repair the phone.

Here's my attempt. When she moved those pics and vids from the 2g card they don't permanently erase so you could still use recovery software to get those pics/vids off the card again.
I'll bet that's cheaper than repairing the phone too.

Not a bad idea and worth a shot. I have had great success pulling files from a hard drive with pin 1 missing and a corrupt fat table, using Easy Recovery Pro. That (windows based) app is also very useful for retrieving deleted files, as long as the source wasn't formatted. As far as using adb, usb debugging would have to be enabled as previously mentioned. Also, if the phone doesn't ring, are you able to tell if it actually turns on? Without power and usb debugging, adb is useless.
On the off chance, does she backup her pics with Lookout?
Good luck getting your files back.

You can try android commander. Its worth a shot. I had a similar situation before I knew about odin my phone was in a continuous boot loop and couldn't mount the sd card, I used android commander to pull some pictures that needed for my work. I just had to make sure it the device was recognized through adb. Good luck.

Just a thought, why don't you use the screen from your Vibrant and put it on hers. That will A.confirm it's the screen and B. get your pictures.
+1 on android commander if you don't want to do the hardware swap. If your phone is actually coming on just no screen it will pick it up. Wait, don't you have to be in debugging mode for that though?
Seems your best bet is the hardware swap.

[Q] Is my Vibrant dead?

Greetings everyone. Reader for a while, but this is my first post, and unfortunately it's because I'm quite sure I should be preparing a burial plot for my phone unless someone can help.
Here's the situation:
I installed the Cyanogen Mod beta on my Vibrant and it was pretty cool, but I couldn't get passed the gps and video recording (I was warned, I know, but I wanted to try it anyway). This was not the first rom I had flashed, and was familiar with CWM and ODIN, so this was not a problem for me. I wanted to have something working so I decided to go back to the DeOdexed JL5 rom, which I was running before, so I went into ODIN to restore back to stock before flashing, and it hung up after clicking repartition. I pulled the battery on my phone, and when I went to put it into Download mode again, it wouldn't go into it. Hell, it wouldn't do anything.
How totally screwed am I?
the phone won't turn on?
try plugging first the usb then hold the volume buttons then put back the battery.
That would put it in Download mode. It won't go into that.
you can't put it into download mode?

Yeah. Always did before I tried putting it in download mode out of some (probably irrational) fear that they would get wiped as well
There have been a handful of others recently who have had their vibrants in the state where they aren't booting, aren't even showing a charging icon when plugged in. Persistence is the key. The steps posted by iynfynity do work, even from your current state, according to the individuals who have found themselves in the same state lately, no power, phone doesn't respond to anything. You can find these posts around these forums here at xda. Keep trying, if you get frustrated, walk away for a little bit and try again later.
-Remove battery and all cards, have odin open, files loaded and ready to go.
-Plug in usb, holding both volume, pop the battery in
Again, persistence is the key, and a little patience doesn't hurt either.
I can vouch for that... I always used the 3 button combo and had this happen. I tried everything. I even have a replacement sitting here still in the box not opened. I tried 1 more time with just pulling the battery sim and sd card out, plugging in the usb to pc, held down just the volume buttons, plugged in usb to phone, put the battery in and right to download mode.
I'm keeping my old phone and sending the replacement back..This one just won't die... : )
Thank you, you lovely gentlemen. Persistence and patience was key. I'd pretty much given up all hope on it once I plugged it in and it wouldn't even pop up with the battery charge indicator.
I wish I was more patient because I already bought a Captivate, rooted, unlocked, ROMed it. Oh well at least now I have a backup phone.
Glad you got it back up at least. Hopefully your captivate wont start shutting itself off when your battery gets below 85%, as many others are plagued with, if it does though, you have your backup.

Internal memory extraction

My GSII is totally broken. It can't even connect to the boot cable.
Anyways
I only need a way to reach the internal memory becausei got some VERY IMPORTANT info and pictures that I need to extract.
HOW CAN I DO IT?

No one even bothers to give me a answer.
I've had 2 questions and I never got an answer for any of them. What a support. What a support.

First off, understand the fact that you aren't the center of the universe, nor everyone's attention.Help will come eventually.Be patient next time.It can even take days for a proper answer to come.
So,to extract the internal memory is easy. You just have to disassemble the phone and find the "NAND" labeled chip(or so I think, but you'll probably be able to find it).Problem is that, normally,it'll be glued to the mainboard. If you remove it,you destroy any chance of recovering the whole phone.Bigger problem is that, even if you extract it ok,you don't have any equipment that will be able to read it.It's not an SD card that you stick in a reader and do your thing.
So,your best bet is to send the phone for repair and explicitly state that you want your files intact.Ask them to not repair it if they can't preserve your files.
That's all the help I can give you.I hope someone can help more.
Even though you were a bit rough but it's MUCH better than ignoring
I know I'm not Thee priority, but I just had a trip to Turkey and have ALL my pictures in my GS2. I'm nervous and you can see why.
As you can see I live in Iraq and obviously there is no proper service around here and I'm the biggest hope I got.
Either I wait until I go for another trip and take the phone with me to fix it there or to bother you guys here, and I'm sorry for that

I had CriskeloRom 32 on my phone and nothing was wrong. I was checking websites while thephone was plugged in to a charger. Suddenly my phone died, the screen went black and didn't turn on. I tried to but it in recovery & downloading mode but it never did. Went to a repairing store they used the boot cable but it didn't even get connected.
The best guess is some hardware thing is broken inside.
My bad luck is I had the 16GB external memory filled with HD videos and I was using the internal memory for the camera. The best moments of my life in antalya/ Turkey with my wife and daughter is saved in this memory.
I was waiting for Galaxy Nexus (I actually ordered one) but after this I'm really afraid of internal memory only phones.
Now I use Galaxy Note

Well,I keep my important files in the external SD,so I avoid possible problems.
Sounds like something got fried inside your phone.Damn thing goes really hot when charging sometimes. And Iraq's hot climate must have finished it off.
So,I'd wait for someone more experienced than me to say something on the topic.I think that what I said still applies though.Samsung service maybe is your only hope...

How can I remove data from phone without unlocking screen (screen broken)?

Hi folks,
Long time lurker but a rare poster, I hope this isn't held against me haha!
I dropped my Galaxy S3 at New Year and it has completely shattered the screen. Upon finding out that it's £150 to have it replaced, I'm going to recycle the phone and get another phone, and cut my losses that way. £150 is a lot of money for me at the moment.
Anyway, the phone still powers up but the screen stays blank. When I plug it in to my computer via USB, I am told that the phone is locked - this is because I have a pattern screen unlock and, obviously, can't use the screen! Therefore, I can't get the data off my phone since I can't put in my unlock pattern.
Is there anyway around this? I have pictures and a video of my daughter after we spent our first Christmas together which mean a lot to me, and I'd really prefer not to lose them. It also means that I can be a bit at peace when I send the phone away for recycling, that most personal details will have been removed.
Sorry to bother you all and I really hope someone can help me out. I will be eternally grateful!
Cheers,
R

No I haven't, which I'm sort of regretting now! That 16gb storage space was too tempting to be lazy with.
I have noticed that there are apps on the Play store which I can download to unlock my device via WiFi, but the app has to be opened for the first time which obviously I can't do. I can download and install apps on my phone through my PC though when logging in to my Google Account. Would this open any doors for me?
Or is there even any way to remotely start apps? If I could get Kies Air working this would be perfect.
If USB debugging was enabled, the adb pull command might work
On Samsung Dive you can onlock your screen.
Also you can wipe youre phone from there.

Well if your motherboard is broken then you cant But i think that s2 has sdcard on motherboard and you can take it but if im wrong correct me

Well with no turning on do you mean it does not boot into the Rom or is it not even going through your bootloader ? try to charge it and see if it responds
Um....sensitive micro electronics meets immovable object at high velocity....... something's gonna break....and it ain't gonna be the immovable object.......
The S2 does have internal storage....however it's not removable.....it also has a slot for a removable micro SD card...if that was in use at the time of collision, then *some* of your data *might* be recoverable...if not......
Well......next time, just throw a coffee cup or something, and mark this down to experience.
