[Q] Maintaining my whatsapp conversations - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a SGSII and recently i switched from the official ICS rom to CM9 (build date 20 april). I expected to get a better battery life since CM9 is so populair. Unfortunately this isn't the case and so i want to switch back. Only thing is, last time i switched, all my whatsapp conversations were blanc. I couldt retrieve any old conversations. I know you can email the conversations to yourself but that's not what i want (or is it possible to use these emails in some kind of way to get the conversations back into whatsapp???). Is it possible to backup all my conversations so i can put them back into whatsapp after i flashed the phone to another rom (probably the official rom).
Also, as you can see, I'm not fond of CM9 although this is the most populair rom. Did i do something wrong? I'm a heavy whatsapp user and even when i'm charging the battery drains when using whatsapp (brightness auto and stable WiFi connection). I never game on my device or use bluetooth or gps. I mostly use my phone for facebook, whatsapp, twitter and browsing. Also my phonesignal drops sometimes and my 3G is also worse than before.
Is there a ROM which will give me with my requirements the best Battery life + phonesignal (3G)??
Thanks a lot,

I think backing up the app + data using Titanium backup should do the trick.
After you wipe your device and reinstall the new rom, simply use titanium backup to restore whatsapp and all your conversations should be restored.

Good Day!
Well, Sprite Backup is not working and I took the backup using Sprite Backup. Second issue, Phonebook not showing the contacts, despite the fact that I tried many times. The contacts are restored as evident from the Messaging, as I can select the recipient, however, the Phonebook is showing "No Contacts".
Can anybody help? especially a way to install Sprite Backup.
i wrote to Sprite backup support so lets see what they answer, but i did backup with SE backup and restore (UI seems the same as on Sprite ) even with MyBackup pro, gmail backup etc...
Try to check your google account Contact if u have contacts in different group then My Contact it would do the restore, at least i havent figure it out how to pick Group to restore as on 1.6 version
Well, apparently for me, i'm not able to remount via adb.. getting "mount: Operation not permitted" any ideas? anyone?
Restarts
damn my phone is restarting when I switch to any map application. Wisepilot, GMaps it either will not connect or it will restart and this process is draining the battery like crazy..
Before I used to press hold on a message I could add the contact, now I can't why the hell did they take this out?

I have been trying to charge my phone through the AC adaptor, but it doesnt seem to be charging at all in fact the overall charge is actually decreasing. Also when the phone is off and I plug in the usb to charge it boots to a black screen showing a large battery charging icon. Anyone else?

Ok, how you get the latest back up and restore app.
1 download a barcode scanner app from the market.
2 load up pc companion
3 select update software
4 in the disclaimer about updating it advices you to back up all personal data, with in that there is a link to get the latest version of back up and restore from SE website.
5 follow the link and scan the barcode with your phone from the website
6 it should now download and then install it.
7 should be done. This works, I did it earlier and im still on 1.6 and I now have the newest one that backs up play now and market links.
This should be easy aslong as your comfortable with all the above steps, piece of cake honestly

X10 - 2.1 nordic generic - battery drains very fast!!!!!
Hi guys,
I've updated to 2.1 and so far I found the battery to last less than 1 day, when in 1.6 (024 FIRMWARE) this would last like 2 full days with normal usage....
For sure somethings going on here... which applications might be the cause??
thanks

Apparently its meant to get much better after you let the battery run out and next boot up its meant to improve after that. I'm sure I read it on one of the various 2.1 threads on here

[Q] All the Messages (SMSes) being threaded wrongly?

I have searched the web and found no discussion about it anywhere, leave alone xda-developers forum.
I have an X10i running on an Android custom ROM - CM 6.3.1.
I have a very unique and strange problem in my phone which is very annoying and causing inconvenience.
All the messages (SMSes) are being threaded wrongly and randomly. That is, an SMS coming from 'A' threaded to 'B'. B's SMSes threaded to 'C'. C's SMSes threaded to sometime A and Sometime B. And A's SMS create a new thread sometimes. An SMS coming from a totally new person or source threaded either A, B or C whereas they are not at all related anyhow etc.
This may sound unique and unbelivable but i am really facing this problem since a couple of months. Before that it was working fine.
The various steps which i have already tried but got no success are :
1) Wiped out the entire depository of SMSes and started afresh.
2) Reset my phone to factory default.
3) Tried different custom ROMs or different version of a custom ROMs.
I do not understand why the phone is behaving so strangely. A help from someone will be greatly appreciated.
Don't know if this would help but did you try using Stock super vanilla 2.1 just to see what happens?

Sorry.... but would u mind explaining what is Stock super vanilla 2.1?
1. Installed History Eraser app and erased app cache, search histories, SMSes, and call logs.
2. Uninstalled native Messaging app through Titanium Back up app.
3. Rebooted and then installed another popular SMS handling app - Handcent SMS.
The problem still remain as it is.
Anyone there to take the challenge.

[Q] Few quick questions TB and Roms

Coming from the Evo 4g most of the Roms "required" a restore of App ONLY from TB to prevent errors and odd battery drains due to the Sense versions not being native to the phone. Is this also the case with the 3D if I were to move to a 3.5 Rom or even stay native 3.0?
Also, we had to create an EXT3 partition for apps ect... for the new Sense releases to run efficiently, is this the case for the 3D? or is it basically plug and play? I do not use a ton of apps outside of what comes with the phone, some random widgets, small games ect... 25 user installed apps at best. 2nd part, some of the games install data to sdcard, I have tb'ed them back WITH data and 1st opwen I have to reinstall data. is there something I am doing wrong?
Lastly, my work email is a basic pop3 account that I sometimes don't install to the phone because it's tedious to type in the custom smtp ect... yes it's laziness haha. How do I back up the mail account so on a new rom I can just load it back in without issues? the without issues part is where I would need it. If I have to do the steps every time to properly get notifications I will because if I assume and don't then it's pointless.
Thank you
and can I get 4G on any of the 3.5 Roms????
hahaha j/k on this one, I just had to throw it in there. I rarely even use 4G.
For some of your questions I have no idea about, such as the email, but I can tell you that most ROMs do not delete your data. I have flashed about 5 different ROMs and none of them have deleted apps or my saved accounts and email.
Its been as simple as move the ROM to the SD, and flash using CWM, and no lost data what so ever. Also I usually stick to 3.0 ROMs due to the instability of 3.5 ROMs. Also I guess I've answered your email question to.
I think you missed where I was going with this.
My concern is with Titanium Back up and the batch restore function. On the 4G it was suggested to NOT tap the app+data and only install the app back due to glitching and battery drain caused by the reinstall not being 100% in sync with the different Roms.
Example: I couldn't install Facebook on the RunnyBliss hybrid with my data from the backup I made on the Sensation ported Rom. Both Roms had a different base and 3.0/3.5 not being native to the 4G it would cause excessive drain or force closes. At least a higher % chance of it.
With 3.0 being native here my question is if Titanium Backup still needs to be treated the same way.
Also, and this one I think I figured out, the 4G required a special partition set up due to the lack of Ram but i was curious if the 3.0/3.5 Roms also required this if I do not use apps2sd. I think I resolved this with some reading though.
The email one I tinkered around and found my answer, so basically I just need the 1st one still haha. And the bottom one lmao!

CM9... Omega... any other ROMs worth trying?

Hi guys,
I'm currently running the latest nightly of CM9, really liking it at the moment but I'm always up for trying new things out. I've noticed the Omega AOKP ROM and saw it comprised of a few CM9 features.
My main question is more of a comparison, whats the difference between CM9 and Omega, are there certain benefits or which one do you solely prefer? Any info would be good so don't think I'm asking for an essay of a comparison, but just wondering if it's worth trying out, and why.
Saying that, any other ROMs that are worth trying as well?
Cheers for reading, looking forward to the replies.
I can almost bet that all the roms you can find here are good in their own way. Just try them and see which suits you better
Hey Joey.. you need to look at the changelogs. Look at what the ROMs have/come with. Flash em and try em for yourself. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. Same with favorite features.. its all taste.
For that reason, threads like these are closed almost immediately. Its all a matter of opinion.
Omega is a Sammy ROM and CM10 is AOSP. If you don't know the difference Google it, or spend a little time on XDA.. Google is a faster answer. But in short.. things like swipe a contact to left or right for shortcut to SMS or Call, that is a stock ROM feature.. along with other features you will lose flashing AOSP.. but AOSP has its benefits too. Really, try em yourself and decide.

Cheers for replying so quickly, I figured I'd get a lot of "try it yourself" which I completely understand... and which I'll do.
I know there's a Samsung Omega ROM, but I thought there was an AOKP version as well? Im assuming the samsung one is based on the stock ROM, where as AOKP is based on open source.
Another question, when flashing a new ROM, whats the best way of restoring data. Currently using SMS backup for messages and have all contacts on google. But its just a bit of a ballache restoring apps and sync accounts, obviously I've heard of titanium backup and similar but I've read a few times not to use that to restore apps. Any help would be good as I'm slowly learning the android ways.... I've had a business supplied iPhone for years now and finally got sick of it!!
Closed, as mentioned above, you really need to try them yourself, no one else can tell you what the best fit for your usage patterns will be.
As far as backing up goes:
Titanium backup: apps (Don't restore system apps or system app data between diff roms, or even diff versions of the same rom), SMS, Call log, bookmarks (need pro for some stuff) (Generally, you can restore user app data between roms that use the same major android version, aka ICS > ICS, but not GB > ICS, you can try, at worst you will get FC's and have to do a full wipe) (Also best to grab the apps of the market and then restore data with TB)
SMS backup+: Free sms backup to gmail
Google contacts sync (!)

SGS3+CWM+CM10 - n00b flashing questions

Hi all
Sorry if this has been posted before or if I'm in the wrong section. I've tried to learn as much as possible, but as a complete noob to Android, I'm finding it a tad unmanageable.
What happened:
So first I rooted my device with Odin and CWM6.4. I used CWM to make a backup of my device on the internal SD, as I have no external. I then installed Mobile Odin Pro and flashed first CM9, then the LFB modem, then CM10 and then GAPPS. I then reset my device, or whatever the option was called to delete everything, which the guide said was required.
I'm now running the CM10 released yesterday (06082012) and everything seems to be running well. However here are some questions, that I hope you can help me with:
1) I liked the touchwiz widget for the weather and clock. Can I get this back somehow?
2) I liked the swype keyboard and tried installing swiftkey3, but this does not have swype apparently. Can I somehow get swype again?
3) When I installed CM10, I had to delete everything, which meant I lost all my apps and their files. Is this standard when flashing? I would like to fiddle around and try some different roms/kernels, but it would get tiresome if I had to reinstall everything from scratch every time.
4) Since I got CM10 instead of stock, the screen seem to be generally much brighter and drains a lot more power from the battery. I've tried setting it on automatic, but it doesn't seem to adjust the screen brightness even if I try covering up the sensor with my finger. Does anyone know why? Is it because I'm using software which is under development or is there an easy fix?
5) I've tried getting it to transfer my contacts from facebook to my contacts on the phone, but it just doesn't seem to happen since CM10. Is there something I can try to get it working? Also before I had the option in the facebook app under app settings and could check a box here to make it sync. Now the sync option seems to be under Android homescreen --> Settings --> Accounts --> Facebook --> check to synchronize. It says it synched like 30 minutes ago, but I can't see the contacts.
Thanks a lot for any help you can provide!
Regards Casper

Lets answer your questions one by one..
1. You cannot get tw Widgets on cm10..as it uses the framework which is different from CM10..try other widgets from the market..
2.you can download swipe by going to beta.swype.com and downloading it manually..or else install slideit pro..its also provides the same functionalitty..
3. You don't need to install everything when you reflash..use titanium backup root from play store to backup Apps+data ..and restore the apparel when you flash again..
4.might be a rom issue..remember it is still in development..
5.the settings I jb are in that way..try going to Facebook app..open the contact list..scroll up and down till al the contact pictures load..check you phone contacts again..hope it work..used to work earlier in gingerbread..
Don't mind the spelling mistakes..I am typing on a phone in a moving bus
Cheers.
