[Q] Twiz launcher? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend of mine asked me today if it was possible following to revert back to back to GB following the UK rollout of ICS. Since she doesn't want to dive into this world I figured her best bet is to install a apk of TWiz, so does anyone know where I can get a working APK for an SGSII?
Cheers,
Dave

Sorry, you figured wrong. This would not work to downgrade back to Gingerbread. You would have to actually flash a full Gingerbread firmware using Odin to accomplish what she is looking for.

I'm aware of that but the basic issue is she doesn't like nova launcher so instead I can just install twiz face with a ICS system. What I can't find is a working twiz APK.. back to my original question of, does anyone know where I can get a working version?

She can use the TW launcher that comes with every Samsung firmware. Am I missing something?

As I haven't seen the update yet nor used the "official" orange kies updater I don't really know what package they've put together. But even so does the ICS update come with a twiz launcher?

Those are two totally different things. If she got her ICS rollout through Kies or OTA, then she should have TouchWiz, and the only reason she would have Nova as a launcher is if she either a) installed it herself, or b) flashed a custom ROM that has Nova as its default launcher.

That really shouldn't be the question. The question is, WHY does she have Nova as her default launcher, and how did it become her default launcher?
If she's on a custom ROM that doesn't have the TouchWiz framework, then you can't just slap the TouchWiz launcher in there. It requires the framework as well.
If she got ICS through her carrier via OTA or through Kies, then TouchWiz should still be there. If it is, she can just go into Applications, clear Nova as the default launcher, and uninstall Nova.

Samsung official ICS has TouchWiz, yes.

Jeeez you should chill out, I do apologise for not explaining it to the standards that you clearly expect from people. I should have said "I told her she couldn't without rooting it and going through here and finding a new rom which had it." Since I've not had any updates through the correct channels for over 2 years I don't really know what sort of package they issue you with. I figured TW had been scrapped but if its a samsung add on then it will be there but it all depends who got their hands on what. Until I see it I won't know.

I don't need to chill out. I'm not stressing about anything. But if you expect help, the devil is in the details. If you're providing conflicting details, it's impossible to help you.

The reply multi quoted reply comes over as very pissy I suspect this is down to the the fact you needed to be correct and bold out the conflicting points to prove yourself right. But in reality I suspect you meant well.

You're taking it the wrong way. I'm a very detail oriented person. I bolded the relevant text for context. Context is pretty important when talking about problems. Chucking insults at someone trying to help you is a good way to ensure you're not getting any more help from that person though.
Good luck.

I'm not trying to insult you at all really, its just the way it comes across when you read it. Its as though you're being quizzed by police and if you don't get every detail correct its the most awful of things. Sadly I wasn't detailed enough for you. I didn't realise a question such as this needed to be really detailed, its not as though someone pulled their usb out while odin was working and categorically shot themselves in the foot..

[Q] Can you put HTC Sense on Galaxy S2?

Hi there. Im pretty new to Android, but im guessing the answer to this question would be yes. Im also guessing that this would require rooting the SGS2?
Thanks
Not atm. Might be available in the future if some dev put ALOT of work into it, tho I doubt it myself...
Will require root yes.

Thanks for that
maybe after they finish the port on Nexus S, currently on 0.2 working
If you really want Sense that bad, maybe you should go with the HTC Sensation..? It's just as good as the SGS2 (Spec wise)
i am about to buy a new phone and am stuck on this very question
is the s2 going to get a sense ROM???
the original galaxy s still doesnt have a fully functional sense ROM
I have to purchase my phone within the week and the sensation will not be available before mid june
Sure it's possible but I'd imagine it would be a fair bit of work. Hopefully once this phone hits more markets we'll get a few more devs to work on projects like these

I'm not sure why you'd purchase a GSII if you want Sense. To answer your question, the only way to KNOW the GSII is going to get the ROM is to make it yourself. None of us on here can tell you it will happen, or won't happen, with any certainty. It seems extremely unlikely to me though, as most seem to either be satisfied with TouchWiz 4.0 or are interested in something more AOSP-y.
Why can't you wait an extra week or 2 for the Sensation? That seems a much better option for you.

You can make the phone look like sense... With launcher pro plus and a sense mod you can find on this forum. Launcher pro plus has the same look for the widgets, like friendstream.
The sense mod had the sense themes, the dock and so on...
With widgetlocker you can get the sense lockscreen.

I always thought that XDA-Dev is about doing such things, just because you can, not because you need it.
It is, but some people seem to forget that. They also can't think beyond two feet in front of them either, so you will have to remember that when you listen to/read what others have to say.

I'm not doubting that. But remember how much work it is to port something like Sense, and that work needs to be coupled with a desire to do it by someone with a lot of talent. The SGSII may get a stable Sense port, it's entirely possible. But look at the progress made on the original SGS. Last time I looked it was alpha stuff that really wasn't all there yet, and that device has been out a year now. No one should be making any kind of decision on the SGSII with the hope that Sense will be ported.

True, but one can always ask right? Or if you have the tools and knowledge, you can chip in and help to find a solution if it exists. I didn't buy my SGSII in hopes of getting a sense port, but wondering if it was possible shouldn't get me or anyone else flamed for asking either.

You're not getting flamed. There's just an inordinate number of threads asking about Sense on the GSII, and the answer is pretty easy. It's definitely possible, why wouldn't it be, when it's one Android build to another? The real question to answer is...is how difficult will it be and is it likely to happen. I gave you my opinion. If you disagree or don't like it that's fine, it's just my opinion

I'm glad you presented it as your opinion, and you're right in that I can agree or disagree with it. But you aren't the type of person I was referring to. I can respect anyone that presents their case in a clear and concise manner, but I have no respect for people that do nothing but interject with nothing pertinent to add to the discussion. All they do is spout off their opinion like it's gospel and you should agree with them, and if you don't, then you're an idiot.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You should have never wasted your time with any of the 3rd party ROMs. None of them are fully functional and all are riddled with countless bugs and issues.
Yes you will need to flash your unit back to stock if you want the update. You did do a backup of the stock ROM didnt you?

if you dont have time to read, comprehend, and understand what you are doing to your phone, you dont need to do anything to it.
if you want to get pissy because you didnt understand the difference between a firmware version and a rom, then fine. this website is not here to 'make your phone cool'

I'm hoping that the dev for UnNamed will incorporate a newer 2.3.6 or 2.3.7 base for their roms soon for further development. Maybe they're waiting for ICS like most other Devs?

The ROM Dev has to recreate the ROM on that base. Currently UnNamed is based off 2.3.4 and the dev will have to redo all his mods he incorporated in the 2.3.4 base into the new 2.3.6 base or other..... which he decides if at all. So basically you are at the mercy of the rom dev.

gtg's policy is just like mine - Unless there is a MAJOR reason to rebase on a leak, we don't do it. Leaks are a major hassle for ROM developers (and kernel devs) unless the leak offers a major feature. UXKG3 (Rogers Gingerbread) for the Infuse was such a ****ty release it actually did make sense to pull stuff from the AT&T leaks, however, completely rebasing onto them caused tons of problems for gtg (broken GPS, broken modems, wonky data, etc.) when he tried to pull in too much. In the end all he did was pull the camera libs (the only significant improvement).
So you'll see UnNamed move to 2.3.6 or 2.3.7 when an official AT&T update comes out based on it, or a MAJOR feature shows up (and even then, it's more likely to just get backported like the camera libs on Infuse.)

Hello, noob here! My OTA update failed so I installed UnNamed v2.1.1 (Based on UCKK6, Android 2.3.6). Everything works fine, but I notice that scroll-bounce effect (the bouncing at the end of scrolling) is replaced by a glow. Anyone knows if this also happens to the official UCKK6 update? I would love to have the scroll-bounce back without going back to stock Android 2.3.4

[REQ] ICS Mail.apk sans Exchange Security

Could you please do the same thing with this one? This is from the BAMF ISC rom recently posted. It is a little bigger in size compared to the last ICS Mail.apk you fixed. Must be the reason why I cant use it.
Edit: Well, looks like it is actually the same size as the one in op but for some reason every time i try to add my exchange account it force closes as soon as I click on exchange active sync. It goes a little further on some of the other types of accounts but eventually force closes.
Thank you very much.
I never did get around to loading ICS, gonna have a go now that we have an "official" ROM. Can anyone confirm I need to do this again with the latest (ie, Sense 3.6) apk?
If so, I'd be willing to put up a bounty again....

ICS Official Release Look / Theme

Hey Guys
It may be a silly question but I was wondering why the official release still looks like gingerbread I mean obviously some parts look like ICS but others dont, why is this ?
This can be fixed with a theme editor I guess but I was just wondering why, when O2 release this to customers will it still look as it does now ?
Yes it will as samsung are so in love with touchwiz that they should marry it.
I use spb shell so will stick to that.
But use any launcher to get the look you want. When Im not using spb use launcher pro as it gives you a wide scope to play with
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Hey person from Telford! nice to see another.
This is the way ICS will look on the SGS2. Samsung wouldn't change from this look as it could potentially alienate a lot of their 20million customers.
Hey guys thanks for the answers, so whats the best way to make it look how its ment to is there a hack to get the look or is the best way via a theme ? the reason I ask is because I have come across this guy http://www.samsung-galaxy-s2-android.com/rom-android-403.html
that is the look I want and he seems to have got the look with earlier versions
The way to get the stock look is with a theme like my ICS RED
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535956
or with a custom ROM.
thats diffrent so if I look for that but im guessing th blue one im after that should do me thanks

Correct me if i'm wrong, but that is AOSP ICS version, so that's the default look of it.. It's not themed
means nothing to me mate so thats the original rom from google or a beta anyway, Im guessing this guy will update this soon then ?
I just want my SGS2 to look like how google inteneded mainly cause its better looking

The problem is that AOSP isn't 100% functional yet.. video recording, MTP and some other things don't work yet and they will remain that way until samsung releases sources or xplodwild finishes his kernel ^^
oooohhhhhh its all starting to make sense now, that makes sense so its just a waiting game really then we can install the google version and its then happy days, so thats what this guy is doing and the CM9 guys
I guess what they do now then is backwards engineer what Samsung has released and work from there
I'm also interested in this. Basically I want a change from always looking at the same menu after a year and i had hoped ics would give it but im hearing it all looks the same cause of touchwizz. So I'm hearing different things, some people say install a theme, others say install a launcher and yet others talk about installing a new rom?
The Ressurection Rom looks quite cool, is it really a bugfree experience? Do i have to reinstall all my programs, downloaded apps and stuff like battlenet authenticator?
Can I install the ressurection rom now or do i need to wait till my phone has ics installed trough kies?
What is the best way to go to get a smooth ICS type experience? Whats the main difference between these things? (sorry im a noob by the way and theres so much information on this site its hard to get a grip on it).
Have a look at the link i put up I think the best thing is to install that rom after its been updated again with the new version of the ics that was just leaked
