So I understand that in ICS these are both bound by the system. So in that case when adjusting the volume with the side buttons shouldn't that not only adjust your ringer volume but the notification volume as well?
You are correct the notification and ringer volumes have been merged, now one in the same. I have an application called Audio Control which will give you separate notification and ringer volumes which can be found here:

On my previous phone (ZTE Blade) I had an option to match the ringtone and notification volume level.
On SGS2 I don't see that option, is it possible to do?
Don't think there is an option for this, which is very very annoying.
You use the volume keys to increase or decrease the volume of the ringtone, but to change the volume of text messages you have to go into all the settings? Pain in the bottom!
when I put my ringtone volume up and down via the volume buttons I don't think my notification volume goes up and down with it. I have to go Into sound settings and move notification volume manually..
is there a way to make it go in unison?

in apps like audio manager (which also has a pleasant side effect ) you can see all the different volumes there are.

notification
ringer
system
voice
so to be able to control all these different volumes with one volume rocker, it only changes the volume of currently active stuff, in a call, you can set the in call volume, yet not the music volume and while listening to music you will not be able to set the ringer volume, unless you do that either through system settings, an app like audio manager, or by triggering a sound of the category and pressing vol up or down in that situation.

Sorry, it was PowerAmp, this app allows 'step-less' volume control. But this is a musicplayer which has its own volume control, it's independent from the system's audio.
When you change volume using the rocker on the home screen it only controls ringer volume. I want it to also lower notification volume. Htc phones control both so I guess this is a TW issue. Can what the rocker controls be changed"

I'm trying to mute ringer volume but keep notifications sound. I'm able to set different volumes when ringer is not muted, but when I silent ringer volume, notification are automaticly silent too.
Is there a way to unlink that?
I used xposed modules - GravityBox and Ulink Ringer & Notification but that's still not working.
