Hey guys!
I'm using CM7 for a quite long time (2 months lol) and I noticed that the battery drains quite fast (doesn't last a day).
The ROM I'm using I've made, for myself, but it is pretty much the same of all barebones CM7 ROM, based on vo-1's. Deodexed and stuff.
I was thinking: would I get better battery life by using a stock ROM or not? The only thing that I really use in CM is Theme Chooser, (pretty much) all other things don't matter to me.
Also, there is some way to theme a stock ROM using as basis an CM7 theme?
Another thing that matters to me: CM7 is faster than stock, isn't it?
So, what should I do?
For me, battery life and performance is better on stock.

From what I've tried cm roms are faster than stock (try playing games on both, cm plays them smoother).
Stock roms can be themed, just not as complete as cm roms, if you extract the png files in the cm apps (/res/drawable-mdpi) and replace them in stock apps you have themed your stock rom.
This takes a while, and if you change the png names or size of your stock png files you will get Fc and errors (like missing graphics on menus).
Just remember to backup original apps before modding.
There are no stock rom theme choosers.

Well, no matter what I decide, I need a quick option: what's the best Stock ROM? It needs to have Brazilian portuguese, I can't live only with Portugal portuguese. I guess that there isn't any European ROM that has this, right? I was thinking on that Indian firmware, S5830DDKQ8... Nice choice or not?

Why?
I tested Mike Gapinski ROM. It's fine. Why you think SwiftDroid works better?
Mike's rom is awesome beside the lag otherwise i would say it is fast and smooth, angrybird runs smoothly aswell

wrong thread, post in Q&A
currently im' using SwiftDroid 2.0 RC5, firstly upon fastbooting, i clean out system apps, remove a whole bunch of them like DSP, Picotts, tts, stock launcher, stock keyboard, all live wallpaers, live wallpaprer picker, gmail, talk, maps, news and weather widget, spare parts, dve tols, quick settings, gallery 3d, home screen tips, one time init, and more, can't remember what
system rom is 157mb and 44.6 is empty
i install smart keyboard, cause it has internal calibration, and rom itself is very miscalibrated, and with my big fingers, i just cant write an SMS, i add launcherpro dropbox quickpicgallery and facebook messenger(Not the app, only messenger app
after that i apply touch wizz theme, icon pack suave hd and last V6 Supercharger --> IMHO the most important, NEVER EVER ran out of memory or had a launcher redraw
never had smoother rom than this.
only thing that can drive me away from this is ICS in some stabil build.
ONLY thing missing is that freakin calibration.
Utopia is the best and very stable rom for me. Try, you will not regret it.

A little bump, I don't know if I should have opened a new topic or not but I hope you can forgive me.
I am very happy with my Optimus but the phone started to show wrong battery stats a while ago and I finally decided to fix that but I need some advice.
The details:
Code:
Version 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected]
Mod version: OpenSwift/CyanogenMod-6.1.1
Everything was fine for 1.5 years, my battery lasted for 7-10 days (I only use my phone for sms/calls/listening to music/occasional Internet and Google maps search/. But for a few months now, the battery stats are wrong all the way, I charge my phone fully and after few minutes it is on 80% percent but I know that this is wrong because my battery lasts as usual. Sometimes it says 15% or less ("please connect your charger") and shuts down my phone, but after a while, I turn it back on and the phone lasts for several more hours without charging. This is really annoying because one time, I had to make an urgent call, my phone shut down and later I turned it on and the battery lasted a long time without the need to recharge so this is basically a software issue if I recall correctly.
I have two questions:
Should I use an android app to recalibrate my battery or is there a better, manual way to do it?
Should I change to another ROM? I want the ROM which gives me the most battery life but I also want root access e.g. without any restrictions. I saw that the Utopia ROM is suggested but it says:
Does not work:

There are so many GB roms out there now. What's the difference between miui and say Simply Honey? I've only ever used that and Simply Stock. Is one better than the other as far as performance or is it more visual? Thanks!

Miui is mostly visual it is an overhaul of android ui its also fast but i multitasking menu is slow to start when playing games but it is cool also its smooth over all battery is avrage to bad 8-12 hrs in my experience an other gb roms is samsung roms on steriods an battery is great 12-20 for me froyo like 14-24 an its regular android with twiz on top of it an the browser is lag free on jvs an jvr roms an i prefer sammy gingerbread because its better over all

If I may explain in a slightly less feverish run-on-sentencey way than Jason, MIUI is built from the ground up, while most other Gingerbread ROMs are based on leaked i9000 ROMs from Samsung.
MIUI has a unique launcher that does away with the app drawer, instead putting all apps on your home pages which are easily organized into folders of your choosing. It also has many special features you can't find in the leaked i9000 gingerbread ROMs. For instance, long pressing a toggle like wifi or bluetooth will open up its settings.
MIUI is also, in my experience, a much smoother experience than Froyo and even leaked Gingerbread. The launcher has no lag with only a mild overclock, and apps load quickly. Even the phone itself starts up quicker than with other ROMs.
The best part of MIUI is in the customization by way of theming. All those special lockscreens that require custom ROMs and flashing to use? MIUI allows for anywhere from single swipe to, I'm not kidding, 15 button lock screens simply by downloading them through the online theme collection. You can change your icons, status bar, lock screen and wallpaper, dialer, SMS, and more by simply downloading a theme online through MIUI, and can even mix and match various components to your liking. SMS from Blue Dado Black combined with an animated lockscreen from some indecipherable Chinese name and a font from the Evolver theme, and on and on.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to know more, read the MIUI threads in the Development section. For me, I can't imagine leaving the ROM without something catastrophic happening.
Thanks man!! I'm gonna give one a try tonight.
One quick question, if I have the gb bootloaders I need to Odin the froyo one right? Also need to be on stock 2.1 or .22

Yes, you'll need a Froyo bootloader. I just installed Lithium V2.1 MIUI and wow, it's super cool. I'm trying to figure out the lockscreens.

I have never tried a jv(anything) Tom but I did try every froyo I could get my phone on and I did miui in early augustvand it was a constant flash back and forth from cm7 to that.
I have noticed occasionally lag while loading apps like cnet tv and games (using chainfire pro).
What was the last miui you tried? I must say l, miui as is really stable and still fast, lithium rocks in speed, stock is my face so far when the powermod is applied.
I could not justify staying off of froyo until now.
Miui launches apps fast but are they faster once loaded in Samsung base rom's?
Also it has been since august that I tried any cm7 nightlies since gr90, is it just me or has miui surpassed cm7 in stability with less maunual fixes?
One thing is that the speaker on off for people to hear me is still happening on every miui I try
New owner of an SG2, which I'm liking so far. Am coming from N1 Cyanogenmod.
At present I've rooted my phone and am running the stock rom with Launcher Pro.
I'm liking a bunch of the features of the stock rom (well trying them out) and am deciding whether I keep the stock rom or move to a custom rom.
I do have a few questions about the stock rom, which I wonder can be answered here:
- With the pull down menu you have the options of wifi, bluetooth etc in the status bar. Is there anyway of changing these options (for example want to remove bluetooth).
- With the dialler, once I make a call it goes into a screen with a bunch of options, like, save contact, etc. Is there anyway of avoiding this screen and going straight to home? (incidentally you are given the option of "voice call". Is this something provided by your network or another service?)
- Autorotate. Is it possible to NOT have it working on the homescreen, but available in your apps?
In relation to custom rom, what do you guys reckon is as close to stock as possible, but with a bit more customisation. I'm guessing a custom rom would be able to deal with most of my queries.
1) majority of roms have that bar modified where you can slide it across and have upto 12 triggers, although you can't really remove them. However with cm7 and miui you can customize that bar to your hearts content.
2) no idea
3) look in the launcher pro settings, you should be able to set it there so it doesn't auto rotate
Give cm7 a try.

Cheers mate. Was using CM7 fine with my N1, guess just wanted to mix it up a bit. There are a bunch of features I do like about the stock rom though.
I'll run it for another week and then may give MIUI a go.
Checkout jkay mods and themes for stock roms in the theme section.
Can do basically what you want Plus more.
Also many launchers (home screens) can set whether to auto rotate. Set it to off in launcher and leave the system auto rotate on.

Yes. CM7 and MIUI are build from scratch and doesn't contain anything related to Samsung. So unlike stcok based custom roms, these two roms doesn't support Samsung apps.

Well, the reason you wanted to try is exactly the reason why so many users love GingerMod rom. It has some good apps from Samsung, like the gpu accelerated browser, camera app, fm radio. Rest 95 % is aosp.
So it's pure google experience,no Samsung bloatware, and we can still enjoy some of the real good apps Samsung made.

Hey guys,
I'm still trying to get my SGS2 figured out... I've got it set up with GoLauncher and GoLocker and I love the look and setup etc but I would love to know what ROM people suggest.. I've read all the guides on how to flash custom ROMs, what apps can be frozen etc etc. but I don't know which ROM to go with because I'm not sure if they will change the look and feel of the phone.. This is what I want the ROM to do:
- I want to keep the current look and setout of apps/home screen etc
- Something quick and easy on the battery
- To be able to get rid of all the apps I don't use
I only really use SMS, Phone, Email, Camera, Facebook and Shazam. Nothing complicated really
Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Any advice is appreciated.
Oh boy, it's going to be fun on these forums today.
I use MIUI, it's based on CyanogenMod so there is no bloatware, very customizable, very fast and very efficient battery usage with the Android OS battery bug fixed.
Or use CyanogenMod 7 and use your same configuration of GoLauncher and stuff.
CriskeloROM is if you want to have a very customizable Samsung based ROM.
Rooted stock. Yes, I'm serious.

I definitely won't be going for CriskeloROM then
So will MIUI change the whole look of my phone or can I keep my current look? And what's the difference between it and CyanogenMod 7?
Sorry if the questions sound basic to you guys!
Cheers
CriskeloROM is like stock Samsung ROM with extra added features like CRT on, off, ICS animations, etc...if you want Samsung stuff, and your current UI looks, go with CriskeloROM, I used to use it until I switched to MIUI.
MIUI is different from CyanogenMod, because it has a different look and feel with all MIUI's thousand's of themes and you can make your phone so customized with different boot animations, lock screen layouts, etc.
CyanogenMod is stock Android, with nothing on it and you can put any look on it. MIUI has it's own launcher which is part of the entire theming architecture it comes with, which integrates every aspect of the UI with the launcher, lock screen, and other MIUI apps so that one app controls all.
OK I checked out the MIUI website and I don't really want to change the look so I'll rule that out.
Which is fastest out of CyanogenMod and CriskeloROM? I don't care about Samsung apps (assuming phone + sms etc aren't included? I'm guessing you mean the social hub, music hub etc etc, right?)
Try out CyanogenMod out then, its fastest and speediest because it has absolutely no bloatware. Try it out, there's no harm trying

Try checkrom. Its stock based but has an kitchen app with everything you need to customize the rom the way you want..All bloatware are removed and the kitchen is a must....Or try Hyperdroid...Another good rom and the team are great and they give great support...Those are the two roms that i would suggest
I use checkrom and nothing else.
But for you I would suggest you just root your phone with cf root, install titanium backup and use it to freeze or delete the apps you don't want.

Thanks heaps, I just used cf-root and then froze heaps of unused apps with Titanium Backup Pro, and I have saved a lot of RAM in doing so! I read somewhere there is a battery fix you can apply when you've rooted your phone but can't find it now.. Does anyone know what it's called?
And are there any other essentials to install now that I've got the phone rooted? Maybe the SetCPU program? I'm guessing that would save a lot of battery without sacrificing performance too much, right??
Cheers!
Just flash any Samsung based ROM (I like Androidema), flash Chainfire's Kernel for simplicity and you're set.
Okay, I'm 15 i started getting into android about 5 mounths ago with my good'ol "Samsung galaxy ace" after using it for about 3 mounths i decided that i needed a higher res screen and a proc capable of playing most main stream games (GTA. Nova 2. Minecraft etc). So i bought my beloved neo for theses reasons:
1. 1GHz Proc
2. 265 DPI (854x480)
3. 512mb RAM
After about 2 mounths usage i can't seem to understand how all UI interactions are faster and smoother on my Galaxy Ace?
No matter what ROM (ICS or GB) with whatever kernel I can't get my neo to live up to the smoothness of STOCK Galaxy ace rom, let alone a tweaked rom.
It makes no sense to me how a phone with a faster and better proc and more ram can't achive the same smooth UI
If anyone can explain to me what i can do to improve UI smoothness or how UI scrolling smoothness works in roms etc THEN I BEG YOU TELL ME!
(IF ANYONE SAYS "Buy an Iphone" I WILL REMOVE THERE SCROTUM WITH A BLUNT SPOON)
Roms i've tried:
ALL ics rom (apart from miui) (ICS roms are WAY too laggy for usage)
Most gingerbread roms apart from:
SE tweaked (couldent get it working)
any MIUI (Y WOULD I WANT MY PHONE TO LOOK LIKE AN IPHONE APPLE ARE ****)
I have treid super charge on lots of roms, dont really see or feel difference to scrolling.
Currently im using Stock .62 as it is by fair the smoothest rom for neo.
Thanks for anyone who can point me in right direction or explain y UI isnt smooth.
Sorry for ranting, Josh. (moonytoonyking)
root and launchers
I dont know if this would help you but, have you tried installing replacement launchers? such as Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher EX? they have both smooth UI scrolling interface. Also smooth app drawer UIs. In fairness to Xperia Neo, It has smooth scrolling. Are you sure you are not running too much apps in the background which makes your device slower? Are you rooted? If you are rooted, then I bet you get control of your device, Disabling (unnecessary) background apps, taking control of your CPU/RAM. You could also install Chainfire 3d which would help you a lot in playing games (in terms of hardware enhancements)
Give us details about your mobile, and I mean details so we could help you out mate.
If you're looking for absolute smoothness go for cm7.2, but use other launcher than adw, it lags, at least for me.
Have you tried cm9? it is the fastest rom ive ever tried, i tweaked it for faster and battery friendly.
And its awesome mate.

There are loads of way to make your phone faster and smoother this is how I do it
1: Over Clock to the highest possible even tho it says recommended not to lol just wack it up lol
2: Memory Booster - I like this app just because ever 10 mins I set it up to boot to get ram back up
3: Launcher on ICS at the min so I been using Apex or Nova launcher on gingerbread I would use ADW or Stock
4: SD Maid - Clears all the junk that your phone make for you from internet and other apps

it's rather strange for you to tell me Neo's Scolling is laggy...
to me...it is more smooth than SII and iPhone 4... without root and mod.
U may try 3rd launcher like SPB Shell, AdW EX, Go EX and Launcher Pro.
Also, u may want to enable GPU rendering (HW acc.) of launcher
Hope these help...
I suggest you to use this ICS rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570499 combined with Apex Launcher and NightElf kernel v1.0 RC2 lite...The only problem is that many games aren't optimized for ICS,but the UI it's way smoother than Galaxy S2 or even Galaxy Nexus, plus that the battery life is amazing (use setCpu to underclock the processor when screen is off,i'm using it @245-460 mhz w screen off,and 245-1024 mhz in normal use,and battery life is deffinitely improved (in stand-by it drained 1% in 5 hours).
Thanks for all the replies
I've tried a load of launchers my fav for GB being ADW and for ICS being Apex.
they work well and usaly improve smoothness. BTW i agree that neo is smoother than Gs2 (on stock) but not Galaxy Nexus, that is super smooth.
I have root.
Overclock helps to an extent but if rom is unsmooth it dosent do much.
Havent tried that I-scream ROM as i have found that all SEMC based ICS roms LAG really badly, however since you recomend it i will try. I have been reading up on things like swap and zram but im not sure if they will improve my speed much?
Again thanks for all the help I LOVE XDA'ers

If you still experience some lag, try turning off scrolling cache, force disable, on cm options.
I have about 30 apps i install and don't experience any lag.
Sort of glad to see i'm not the only one having issues with adw.

I suggest you to use this ICS rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570499 combined with Apex Launcher and NightElf kernel v1.0 RC2 lite...

Not bad but stock .62 is smoother by alot still, shame i love ICS. I actualy found the AOSP rom to be the smoothest ICS rom but it has many bugs

You've used Apex Launcher? Because i know that stock launcher is very laggy.I'm currently using this rom with apex launcher and on-screen buttons, and i'm never going back to gingerbread.

Apex improved it alot, but still not smooth, cm9 amazes me its sooooos smooth but buggy and sturf dosent work.
the smoothness of the rom is always tied to the framework files sony didn't optimize it well in their ICS release....
