hi all, i am more of a novice when it comes to using android to the hilt.
am looking to download maps via google maps on my mobile and then use it offline. Is there anyway i can do this or an internet connection is a mandate?
Pls suggest, thanks in advance.
thanks/sj.
On a practical note, i think google map constantly refreshes if you pan or zoom in/out. maybe u can just screenshot a certain map if you really want an "offline" map.

the screen of the mini pro is really small so am afraid the screenshot might not help the cause.
Is possible. Settings, Google Labs, enable map cache, move on the map to the location you want, tap and hold for few seconds, then should be button to cache. Then app downloads the map data in 10 mile range.

the reason I believe that CoPilot Live is worth the cost of less than a Big Mac at McDonalds is that you can use it when you've got no signal...
Any software based on Google maps cannot do that, and so unless you plan ahead and cache your map ahead of time using google maps..you're liable to be out one day...decide to go somewhere, fire up google maps...lose the signal half way there and spend the rest of your trip cursing and watching it "searching for signal...."
trust me...it's worth the 4.99 (I think it might be even less on special right now)
rpavich makes a good point, but I still think google maps turn-by-turn voice navigation is the bomb, in my (admittedly limited) experience. It actually caches quite a lot of map data too. Perhaps it even does so predictively; I'm not sure about that. (Plus, I use Verizon (MiFi 2200) for my data connection, so my coverage is pretty good.)
Improving
Google Maps / Navigation now includes (in a "Labs" feature) explicit map area caching. You can point it to one or more spots, and it'll cache all the map tiles within a 10-mile area (it's a square area, so "10 miles" must be approximate).
I just wonder what'll change when this stuff is no longer 'beta'. I'm worried.
Google maps is good to use its free and does the job well

I like to go hiking, take pictures and geo log my photos and videos. on a crappy day i get a fix on 7 sats, 10 on a good day, getting my accuracy down to a few dozen meters. i'm more then happy with that. problem is where i go hiking there is no signal to be found in the peaks and valleys of the adrondack state parks. i like to use google maps or GPS essentials. i look at my map and im just a dot on a blank screen. is there a way i can get an app to cache of an area i select so i can get the lay of the land (trails, paths, property lines, lakes and streems) saved, when im in no mans land and no cell towers to give me a data link ?
ps run my username on your evo 3d or 3d tv on youtube. i took an awsome picture of a waterfall today.
Press Menu -> More -> Labs and enable Pre-cache map area.
Then, on the map, press and hold on the place you want to cache. When the little window pops up, click it, and then select Precache Map Area. This will cache the area in a 10 mile radius of where you pressed on the map.
good looking out!
new version allows you to just click-hold on the map anywhere and once the location bubble pops up you can click it to get more options, one of which is prechache map area (10 miles from that point). you can cache topo maps by first selecting terrain from layers button in the top right of your screen. used this a lot recently on camping and hiking trips. you might check out maverick or my tracks for better support for hiking and logging your tracks.

I have seen people talking about going on wifi and caching google maps so that you can navigate on the road without using a data connection (for those of us with a limited data plan). Can we do that with the version of google maps that came on our AT&T SGS2?
I see Menu - More - Cache settings but then what? I'm on the stock ROM (at least for now). Thanks.
Not sure bout the version, but if you can do it, then press and hold an area on google maps, then click the location box pop up, the click pre cache ;-) you can repeat up to 10 times.

After I press and hold, an address pops up and then I click that box and I see a bunch of stuff (map, direcdtions, call, street view, what's near, search near, share, report) but nothing about a cache.
Thanks for trying to help crit71!

Finally - I guess I kept missing a step somehow - it works - I thank you guys
Pre-cache gives you Google Map features without data connection but won't give you navigation. Navigation routing is still caculated on the server side. So you have to have the data connection to start the navigation. Once you started navigation, the route information and the map data around the route is automatically cached. So, all you have to do is start navigation while you have internet connection. Once the navigation started and you keep the nav app open, you no longer need data connection (of course you will loss traffic info and satellite images). You don't need pre-cache.
Thanks for comments, foxbat121. We have lots of areas with no cell service near where I live so this is important to me. So if I start navigator and choose a route using cell service or wifi then head out, when I do not have a data connecton, it'll still work?

Yes. That feature has been there from day one. I tested back when I have Captivate (by turn on flight mode). The map cache in Google Maps is new and it is very useful when you travel to foreign countries where (1) Google Nav is not available (it is only availble in very limited number of countries unlike Google Maps) (2) You don't have any data connection (too expensive to use it). You have a electronic map in hand to let you find your way around or show it to cab drivers telling them where you want to go. But it won't let you navigate.
I'm looking forward to further 'off-line' development by Google in maps for this type of thing. They're headed in the right direction but more features like:
Switch to off-line mode to see all cached data
Cache directions plus selectable distance from route (.2/.5/1/5 mile bubble around path)
Track and record GPS data for further analysis, even without cell signal (useful for hiking/canoe type trips).
Anything else you guys would like to see?
I had CoPilot on my old phone (WinMo) and liked it very much. It was very easy to change the route from what the program suggested to something different. I am finding Google Navigator is sending me way out of my way and it is difficult to change that. So a better "alternate route" method would be on my list.

Any idea to download google maps cache and manually transfer to another phone (which has no data plan) for offline use?

I couldnt be sure but you might try copying the Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/cache folder (be sure to use the pre-cache map feature)
I would recommend just pre caching a bunch of stuff while on a wifi. I did this when I took my Aria to Tokyo. Worked like a champ

There are apps on the market, but it seems they are kind of hit or miss.

Everyone needs to logged in to their Google accounts on their phones..Share location with each other and like magic you can view each other in Google maps on mobile and PC
SPRINT also has a real family locator app in their section of the market but you have to pay for it monthly, like $5 I think.

+1 for latitude. Log each phone onto latitude. Each needs its own gmail address. I have my family on there. You can also remotely enable these features online using iGoogle and the latitude gadget. may sound like a privacy thing, but I do it for safety reasons, or to know how much time me and my girl got alone.

With any of the gps trackers, they can be off pretty far one minute and spot on the next. I've had latitude show me off of Cape Horn a few times. Also, any of them are pretty easy to bypass. Latitude allows you to set a location, hide your location or give a "general" location.
If you want something hidden, you'll have to pay. If you want something that tracks fairly accurate, it's going to be a major resource hog and will probably be something you have to download the file off of to view the places that were visited.
Google Laditude
Latitude doesn't update constantly either. It often shows where someone was 3 hours ago, but not usually right at that moment.

i use life360, it shows not only current location but also a history of locations, active tracking, and it has a emergency button, checkin button, and the map it shows lists the nearest fire/police/hospital in emergencies, you can also chat amongst the individuals that are connected.
i highly recommend it, its free and works flawlessly, it doesnt use up much battery life. you can even Ping to get current locations if it didnt update recently
Life360 is good cause it goes with iphone also just in case u have that also

Is there a way that we can Pre-Load the Google maps with map info and POI info, perhaps in the pre-caching directory.
There must be a way.. right now it allows you to pre-cache small areas (under experimental mode) which is garbage I must say, half the time the place isn't even fully cached and info is missing.
If the maps are available surely they can be added to this directory, as long as they're in the right format. Im sure everybody would love to have REAL offline Google maps support.
Try the app on market. Pre*cache maps.

In my experience, the pre-cache maps feature works, but it doesn't cache all the data. For instance, in my city each subway station may have 2-20 exits. To force my phone to cache the location of the exits, I connect to the internet and zoom in on a subway station until the exits appear. Then I move the view around until all the exits have appeared (and the names of nearby buildings and parks). After that, google Maps remembers all those details.
