This is not an invitation to flaming, as I am under the impression that several people have tha same problem, so I will try to gather solution/suggestions here. I have the problem when trying out the new 4.0.4. ROMs, every single one of them are missing the capability to access the external SD card - rather unfortunate since I use it to store music, to back up with Titanium Backup and back up SMS, among other things. And yes, I have wiped, I have run the kernel cleaning script and wiped again, both a system wipe and cleaned the dalvik cache. Still no luck. Now I am aware that there are tools to mount the SD card, but after trying Multi Mount SD-Card Lite, Mount /system (rw / ro) and Drive Mount from Play Store, I still come up empty, literally. I have had 5 Android phones and all have been equipped with various ROMs, so I usually know what I am doing. I even pulled out tha SD card and wiped it on the computer and then formatted it/partitioned it IN the phone. It is a big shame, since ROMs like AdyScorpius, Omega's v3 and especially DraginICS and the F1 ROM are tempting and stunning looking. Any help? Please??

Firstly this is in the wrong thread.
Secondly, have you tried going up to the root directory, and making sure it's not under \emmc
I have, and it sometimes is, but isn't this an issue? I mean, as a frequent flasher I am used to ROMs where everything works, so I would say that is in the making of the ROM, which I doubt since the source is a Google project. But even with Directory Bind, I can't link it. It is over my head, I don.t understand why some people have the problem, and most not. And sorry for posting in the wrong forum, can somone move this or close it?

I think most people are used to the SD card being in a different directory now so they don't mention it. For some roms, there is a flashable zip which mounts it back as sdcard/external_sd (or whatever it was called)

I'm having the same issue. When I restore back to Sense 3.6, my SD is back. Not sure of the issue.
Will not mount. I've went to recovery/Mounts/ and mounted there to no avail.
Also popped out the SD and put it back in, no avail.
When I check my 'Music' it says your content is unavailable because your phone is being used as USB storage. Disconnect USB. -- it's not connected to any USB, oddly.
EDIT: my issue was GB-ICS related and flashed this - http://www.htctweaker.com/RezROM/RezROM_oldfirm_patch.zip for ICS and it fixed my mounting issues.

So i flashed CM7 and it worked alright, but i cant get any of my data/apps back! When i go into the file manager built into the rom it just shows my Sdcard as empty and my sdcardext or whatever as empty also, when its unplugged and in charge only aswell. When i plug it up to my computer and put in usb transfer mode it reads all my files that i have before unlocking, cwm, rooting, and flashing CM7. Any help here?! And the rom doesnt come with the marketplace so i cant try a different file manager. Im really lost here and i dont have any of my data atm.. I have it all backed up on my pc, but no means to make my phone read its memory. Any help would be HUGELY useful right now. While in CWM before flashing i factory reset phone, didnt include sd card(as Qbking77 said in video i watched, huge thanks to him btw love his work) And then wiped cache and dalvic cache. Am i missing something here or whats going on?
EDIT: Also, when plugged into my computer it shows 2 devices, a G: and F:. there used to only be F: as the main "Moto" one, i have no sd card installed into the phone. Now it is G: that is that folder and F: is just empty and cannot be opened by windows and comes when i plug my photon in, at same time as the loaded drive G:. I just used a Nandroid backup to go back to stock rom and reflashed CM7 and still have the same issue..
With the file manager, check /mnt/emmc when running Cm7. That is where the internal sdcard is mounted.
Also. Make sure you flash GAPPS so you'll have market.

You can flip them by selecting settings, cyanogenmod settings, application, use internal storage.

Thanks a ton!! That was exactly it, it mounted to that weird location! and i was able to change that, thank you so much!
Is anyone else having the calendar force close in CM7? This is something I use regularly and would like to have fixed if possible. Any semi easy DIY fixes? Other than that i am absolutely loving CM7!
I have CWM v5 newly installed. I immediately ran a backup with it and all went well. Now, a little later, I've been looking into CyanogenMod and wanted to tiny baby steps so I was nice and confident with things.
I tried to do another backup from CWM and it said it couldn't mount /sdcard. I tried to restore and the same error. Rebooted a few times and it's the same still.
I booted normally and checked with a standard file manager and /sdcard was fine. I haven't changed anything since the time it was working but I still seem to have broken things
What can I do?
EDIT: Actually, since getting CWM on the device, I have played a little with ADB commands and replaced the bootanimation.zip. Everything works when the phone is booted normally so that can't have caused it. Can it?
You really like new threads eh?
I presume you don't have a physical micro SD card, and you've changed kernels again at some point. Now the sdcard mentioned in newer CWM recovery is the external_sd, which you don't have. Use the internal SD card option.

I love them I do search before hand to see if there are similar threads relating to my device but because there aren't, I thought making a new thread per issue would be helpful. I can keep it all in this thread though if that's the etiquette around here though.
I used kTool to flash the zImage from the link you pointed out in my last thread, that gave me CF-Root v5 and CWM. I haven't changed anything since that point so if it worked once, I don't understand why it won't work again. You have confused me about the sdcard/external_sd. I have a card in the device, and everything normally saves to /sdcard but there's also /sdcard/external_sd which is always empty. I also see /sdcard/usbStorage where I have put some files too, but I don't really understand the naming conventions.
As I said, look for the "internal sd card" option in CWM recovery.
I'll add a bit more in the hope you don't need to keep posting.
If you don't have a physical micro SD card in your phone and you try to use any of the "install/backup/restore to/from sdcard" in newer versions of CWM recovery, it will give an error about being unable to mount /sdcard. Also, as far as I know, /sdcard/usbStorage refers to USB OTG, so unless you've got a USB OTG cable and a memory card/HDD plugged in, you shouldn't be writing files to that location.
Backed up successfully to internal sdcard, although I wasn't able to restore from it first which I don't understand because there should be the original one from earlier somewhere.
Turns out I was wrong, I don't appear to have a card in that SD slot even though I could swear there was one. And I can create files/folders in /sdcard/external_sd/ so I give up, lol.
EDIT: Nope, just the normal USB that came with the phone. I created the files/folders directly in the phone when I tested it.
How do I Completly whipe my phone? I've cleared the cache, and done a factory reset, i've re-flashed with Odin to the stock rom, and yet, when I reboot, and go look under "My Files" , there is still crap there from before ( Most notably, 4 or 5 diffrent folders for Go Locker, Go STore.. etc ).
How do i clean this thing out for a 100% restart?
are the things your seeing on an external SD card?
No. The Directories are ( And i'm ommitting quite a few here, just to give you the idea ).
Android
Application
bluetooth
camera360
...
...
DCIM
external_sd
...
...
...
etc ad nausium..
So since i have the external_sd mount there in the middle, this must be the internal right? WHen I select the external_sd directory, that does contain my external card, and that's fine. I expected that to have stuff on it since i've not formatted it yet.
My DCIM dir still has all the pictures etc in it as well.... ( which I would not have expected since I did a factory wipe, yet there they are too ).
Any idea?

He's saying he wants to wipe his internal SD because it has all his app data from previous ROMs/installations (such as stock). He's probably going to a new ROM and wants maximum storage space and getting rid of all the leftover trash.
Exactly. Just want to make sure the wipe is complete or previous issues will just haunt me.
Look in those folders they should be empty.....The phone creates the folders upon turning on (by factory),,those are the essential folders needed...check it out let us know...they should be empty
They all have stuff in them, and many are not from the os. GoLocker, GoLauncher, etc all have dir's there with data in them, all some , those in particular, i don't have loaded. I've not re-loaded anything yet.
Try going here; Settings > Storage > Format USB Storage
Thats the ticket Thank you.
Or in cwm recovery, go to mounts and storage, and format sdcard

Can doing this cause any unwanted and/or unexpected problems?
Nope. It just wipes sdcard storage, like you just took it out of the box

I think I'm confused about erasing external sdcard storage and/or internal storage.
"Formatting USB Storage" is which one of these?
And which storage location can you get yourself into trouble with "wiping/formatting?
Maybe neither?
Thank you!
Neither as far as I could tell. I did both. The SD Card is just that, your external memory card. The USB is the "user" storage on the phone, so nothing critical there either. Wipe away safely
Neither as mentioned. As long as youre doing it do from the storage settings from within the stock rom's menus. It only wipes your user data on the external sd and internal storage, if you chose to do so. You may lose any programs installed/moved to sd card also.
Going into CWM youre opening yourself a whole 'nother can of worms. I highly do not recommend going this route if you are not 100% sure of what youre doing. You can seriously render your device useless, aka brick (a term used too lightly).

Incorrect.
All you could do in cwm is wipe the os.. In which case just button combo into recovery and flash a ROM.
A Brick is missing or corrupted bootloaders. you cannot format bootloaders in cwm.
And avoiding something because it could be dangerous...instead of taking the maybe 5 minutes to understand what's happening add ya know, actually learn something is just not in the spirit of xda AT ALL.
Read. learn. Try. Share.
I'm the 4 genie and I'm extremely frustrated with my evo. While fixing separate issues, I tried flashing something and now it's got an error that E: sdcard (the evo's internal memory) won't mount. It's corrupted i think
It just sticks on the splash screen when I boot up, but the bootloader's and recovery are still here
So far, I've tried formatting it with several programs on both a mac and pc. I tried moving and copying files from the sd card to the internal "sdcards."
I am so sick of this phone, it's caused nothing but problems (first one i got had signal issues, this one ran slow and got even worse signals when i upgraded to JB).
I'm on TWRP 2.5.5. S-ON, HBoot 1.19
Please help me resolve this problem.
I am having the exact same problem. From what I've found on the rest of the internets it seems like we need to reformat (preferably with windows). But I only have a mac so I havent tried that yet.
You guys can try something like this.

If you don't like the phone, then just trade it in or buy another. Coming on and saying how much you hate the phone isn't going to do anything.
That being g said, you probably had a bad flash and it corrupted the internal ( like you said). Most of us have done it at least once. Format the drive, and there you go. That's what fixed it for me, and usually what works. It won't fix your distaste for the phone, though, or your signal issues.
Sense ROMs tend to have better signal than others with my phone. The Sense 5 port is pretty nice, but there are plenty of others that work well. If you've tried the sense ROMs already, then go with AOSP. Some people have better luck with those.
If you still don't like it, then get a phone you do like... Hell, I'd be happy to send you $50 for the phone if you don't want it, I could use another to play with...

How do we format the drive if nothing can SEE the drive? The same thing happened to me. I can't get to the internal sd card.
Every time I had the memory corrupt it was from a viper dirty flash. All I ever did was wipe both caches a factory reset wipe security them mount internal to my PC and format. If this is still at no avail then I would wipe internal storage and let TWRP format the drive for me. I have never had both methods fail. The corruption of the internal storage is why every dev insists a full wipe and factory reset after flashing a new Rom

ugh, gotta get this working so i can get a trade in credit toward my iphone 5s
Interesting issue. I've fixed the issue on other EVO LTE's simply by mounting internal storage while connected to a PC, then formatting it. I can't think of a reason this wouldn't work for you:what:
ok, i've mounted it to the computer as mass storage several times on 4 different computers and formatted it, but to no avail
at the top, it will only mount the sd ext card..... maybe i've mounted it wrong? where do i mount it?
also, the micro sd card is the only thing it wants to read... is there a way to install the ruu (just a stock rom) and boot it from the sd card?
thanks again for the help!
Sorry for the necro, however I had this issue recently and finding very few fixes so thought I'd put something out there.
Now my fix was very simple, so I don't know if this will work for everyone. That being said, the ROM has been buggy now.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 - i9300 (international version)
ROM: Pac-Rom 4.3
Recovery: TWRP
Issue:
when starting phone, it is stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo screen.
Troubleshooting:
I was relieved to find that I could boot into recovery (TWRP).
From there my first instinct was to wipe my phone and re-flash the ROM... BUT when I tried wiping, I got an error. The log said something alogn the lines of "cannot mount internal storage" or "internal SD". I can't remember.
So I freaked out thinking my internal flash storage was fried, BUT why is TWRP working then?
I connected a USB cable to my computer to see what happens. Windows 8 picked up the external SD card, but not the internal phone storage.
Fix:
I would usually NEVER flash a ROM without wiping first, but thought I didn't have much else to lose. I tried flashing PAC-ROM 4.3 without the wipe and it said "successful". WTF? I didn't expect that.
I rebooted and everything worked fine. The ROM wasn't stock either, it had all my settings and icons on my home screen in tact.
Since then, the ROM has been buggy. Youtube app disappeared and wouldn't search properly in play store and the apps drawer had all these com. files f or the google apps (this was still there when I re-flashed GApps).
So I was able to save my phone, but had a bunch of issues. I have since flashed to PAC-ROM 4.4 (Kit Kat). I very much miss the PIE controls and Halo, but it is extremely stable.
Here's what I did when I had the same issue. Take out the ext SD card. Then, plug your phone into your PC. Format your phone with windows, it should appear as a flash drive or something like that. After that, I replaced the ext SD, mounted that with TWRP, and formatted that, too.
Code:
I have an issue with stuff on the "internal storage" portion, usually simlinked to "/sdcard/" or something like this, disappearing when in a new OS I recently flashed.
I was on ViperDNA rom and had lot's of stuff on the internal storage. I switched to the new CM10.2 stable (ok, maybe not new, but new to me), and now the "internal storage" is completely different. None of the stuff I had there previously is there anymore. I know I didn't tell CWM (touch version 6.0.4.6) to format internal storage or any sort of format that would delete the internet storage, and when "searching the SD card" for a rom to flash, it still let's me browse my old "sdcard" that has all the previous files that I had access to, but now, in two different roms, a stock one and the CM10.2 stable, It only shows the "new" sd card contents. I've tried several different file browsers, root browsers, searching for any trace of the old SD Card contents, which I know are still present due to the fact that I can still see them in Recovery, but I just can't find it.
I really need to get several of the files out of there. Any ideas?
Sorry if I haven't given enough/the right info. Let me know if more info is needed.
Ended up using ADB Pull /sdcard/ to get it all. Thanks though!
It's still there, so no worries. I'm not on kitkat but your old stuff is under mnt/sdcard/emulated..or something like that. Your new folder is 0

I'm only on jelly bean 4.3. That's what 10.2 is. Or, even the latest OTA from verizon, no matter what, my data isn't accessible from a computer or from within the android OS.
Only time I even see that the files still exist is in the recovery, and Idk how to get them from there :/
