[Q] What does "Wipe cache" do? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
What is beeing wiped when we apply "Wipe cache" option from recovery menu? So what does "cache" in the recovery menu refers to? Is doing this useful, without firmware update or wipe data-factory reset?
Thanks.

The cache (cache - another useful article; It's basically the same in android) is being wiped . It refers to all those those files created used as cache. It may be useful to free up some memory (usually not too much though).

Thanks. I basically know what the cache is. And I took a look at those articles but I don't think that I need such detailed info about caching. Actually, I wanted to know which cache is being wiped. System cache, disk/memory cache, installed apps' cache etc. ?

up

I think that only files from /cache partition are deleted after wipe

Nope. One of purpose of cache partition is to keep some data when you do update through recovery

I don't know if it'll work for you since you haven't even stated your device . It also seems that you are ahead of yourself at the moment . Read through and learn more before attempting anything or else you may screw up your device.
P.S. - Your question doesn't belong in this thread.

[Q] UPDATE

It may be a stupid question .. Do i have to check the 3 boxes
backup existing rom
wipe data and cache
wipe dalvik cache
every time i do a update ??
Thks
No you do not have to. I only check wipe dalvik which is also optional, but has resulted in better performance for most users here. If you check wipe data and cache then all of your apps will be deleted and you will have to reinstall.
I am also basing this on guessing that you are running CM7, please let me know if that isn't correct.

You don't "have to" do a backup but it is good to in case something is messed up. I think if you wipe data it wipes your existing apps so I don't do that. But yeah I would definitely wipe dalvik.

depends on what rom your are flashing. So with that, let me ask the question. What rom are you flashing? If you're using CM7, those roms can technically be flashed without wiping anything although you may want to wipe the dalvik cache just to play it safe. In doing so you won't need to re-install any apps or enter your account data over again. Some other roms automatically wipe for you. But like others have suggested, you should get into the practice of trying to wipe whenever you can, and use titanium to only restore your apps. Hope that helps.
This is completely irrelevant but I noticed that your signature says do not click thanks. I don't know if you have that there so people will click it, but I clicked it just to be an ass lol. Meant for above poster ^
Edit: Okay I get it now lol. I didn't really look at it, but I see it now so ignore that lol.
i know what im gonna post is not relevant to the actual topic, but since it says "update" as a title, ill post my little rant anyway..
for some odd reason my google search layout has been updated and i really dont like it..
it's on big fonts, compressed on the right side of the screen and there's a huge empty space on the left.. sooo ugly! ughh and really confusing to look at..
why is android's UI/design so mediocre? is google ever going to improve this area? even google gadgets is weak compared to yahoo widgets..
end of my rant thank you.. pfft

[Q] What is a dalvik Cache?

Hello guys i would like to ask what is a dalvik cache because i want to install this ROM For My Samsung Galaxy Y
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602299
If you want to know what it is you can search Google or Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_(software)
As far as installing ROMs go its recommended to clear the davlik cache each time you install a new ROM. On most android phones this is done from within Clockworkmod.

Boot into CWM recovery, it should be under the "wipe". Look for "wipe dalvik-cache" option
Or under the tab: Advanced
Dalvik-cahce
Ive always somewhat wandered what the dalvik cache was never really bothered to look into it. but now i have its nice to know that when i wiped the cache each time i flashed a new ROM it was for good reason. Thanks

It does not mention the cache

Search for what the cache is, read the Dalvik then link them together.

[Q] Switching ROM and wiping

Hey guys,
I have had some issues with my current ROM. I want to change the ROM. I am looking to switch to OMEGA.
How would I do this, I currently have AROMA rom. Should I do a factory reset the just reboot into recovery mode and install that way? Or will just installing the ROM from zip work? Or if I do a factory reset do I need to root it again with Odin, or will I not need to root it?
Also for wiping the phone should I wipe my SD card? Or no?
Thank you I searched and found half answers for most of this.
You have to format /system partition and /data partition in order to get a clean ROM, otherwise you may run into some unforeseeable problems.
Don't have to wipe sdcard
Most ROM except stock are pre-rooted.

Ok just to double check what your saying.
I should do a wipe using the built in android factory reset.
Then just install the ROM using the recovery boot.
I will not have to use ODIN or any other soft ware. Just factory reset and install rom.
AW: [Q] Switching ROM and wiping
I'd factory reset in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, format system and then flash the new ROM from your external sdcard
Please report if that way worked for you
But be sure to backup your apps with titanium backup

Nobody can tell you which rom is better .. All roms are amazing because of the work put into them try them out one by one.. you're not going to lose anything..
Ok cool. I installed OMEGA and I like that rom. I did a factory reset and wiped the Dalvik cache and cache. Will look around a bit more but so far so good....
however same issue with the phone. But now when the call ends it says process com.android.phone has stopped. Then i hit ok and phone is ok. It doesn't automatically restart then go really slow.
No idea about this, I searched however couldn't find a answer. Lots of phones and versions of android had this issue.
Any ideas would be great guys.

You need to go into mounts and storage in recovery and format system and data before you flash, as already explained

why not you backup your current rom first then try to flash a new rom without wipe data. if you not facing any issue on the new rom, then it's ok.
if you facing any issue, you must flash again the new rom with wipe all data. if you not happy with both, then you restore back what you are backup before.:fingers-crossed:

Yes I did. I factory reset. wiped cache and dalvik as well as formatting in the advanced options. I currently have Omega 44.2 installed. But I had the iphone app crashing with AROMA 30.1 and 30.4
Is there away to uninstall the phone app and then re install that cleanly?
I did this and still have the phone crashing issue.

There is no white data. only buttons available are force stop and clear data. If I press clear data it says all data will be deleted permanently including all files, settings accounts, databases. I assumed the files were the actual app.
I went to settings. Applciation manager and chose Phone.
......hit clear data then, do that for phone and contacts storage, the data bases get rebuilt the only thing you will have to set up again is which contacts to display and any ringtone options etc you may have chosen

[Q] How do I flash the radio?

Hey folks! Quick stupid question that most of you will say "answered many times before, use the search" to:
What are the exact steps to flash a new radio? I have an MB860 running CM7-MROM connected to the Bell Canada network in Toronto, and every time an app tries to access the GPS, the data connection dies, and I have to reboot to get the data/H+/3G back. I read that someone else had the exact same problem, and fixed it by flashing "N_01.77.33P_can_bell.zip". My phone says it is currently running "N_01.07.05P" (under Baseband version).
I am assuming that I can use this radio because it says "bell canada" in the filename, but how exactly would I go about flashing it? I searched the forums, and some people are saying to use CWM to "install zip from sdcard" just like I would when I update MROM, while others say to first "wipe cache" <- what cache are they talking about? The dalvik cache?
Thanks for your help!
There is the "cache" partition too, you know...
You won't find any detailed instructions on how to flash radio since it is EXACTLY the same as flashing a ROM.

Well I've found lots of detailed instructions, but some are saying to install it exactly like you would when flashing a ROM update (don't wipe any cache), and some are saying to "wipe cache" without specifying which cache.

Normally its wipe both. Easier way is extract the radio.img, make sure its called radio.img, fastboot flash radio radio.img

The /cache partition holds a part of dalvik-cache, so when you wipe /cache, you wipe a part of dalvik-cache too. (The other part is on /data.)
I'm not quite sure why so many questions about it though. If unsure, just wipe all the caches you come across. By definition, a "cache" is something that holds temporary information which can be easily rebuilt, so there's no harm in wiping it. You're just making it unnecessarily complicated...

Welp, apparently the people telling you to wipe the cache are making it unnecessarily complicated too, because I flashed the new radio ROM without wiping any cache, and it worked just fine!
And OH MY GOD I had no idea my Atrix could get a GPS lock so fast! It locks in under 5 seconds, EVERY TIME now! It used to take 2-5 minutes, it took so long that if I wanted to GPS track my ride, I'd first turn on the GPS mapping app and put the phone out on the patio table, and let it get a fix while I got ready to leave.
And best of all? I can use data/H+/3G AT THE SAME TIME as GPS! It used to be that as soon as an app started the GPS, the data connection died, and I had to reboot to get it back. Now I can actually use my phone like it was designed!

General cleaning and wiping informations

hello actually i am intending with xda developers forum and using custom rom for almost 8 years. but the problem is i never know what does that wipe methods do. until now i just fallowed the instructions but i think i need to know .
i have 2 main questions.
1-) what are this wipe processes do (exacly what are they wiping)
a-)Wipe Data/Factory Reset
b-)Wipe Cache Partition
c-)Wipe Dalvik Cache
please give me proper explenation for each .what are they wiping ? and why we using them for ?
2-) A proper cleaning on my android device. as much as i use my device there is junk files, cropses and all other unnecessary files rolling up in times. so this is very disturbing. and i want to have a blank page only with my rom and my karnel + bootloader etc files i don't want anything more.
so question is this. what should i do to clean my device as this clean like having nothing except basic things ?
if any of you explaint this 2 questions for a dumb user i hope it will be very helpfull also other newbie android users. or the people like me ignorant for 8 years shame of myself
anyway thank you for your help and interests.

A. Wiping data/factory reset completly erases whats in /data,
Your apps, dalvik cache, app data and many others are wiped, but those i listed are the most relevant
With certain devices internal storage can be wiped such as Xperias because /data/media is where the internal storage is mounted however this is typically avoided with the recoveries we have
2. Wiping cache, the cache is typically used to store information or app data that isnt permanent however that can cause crashes or other kinds of issues after a mod instalation
3. Dalvik/art cache is used to store decompiled readable versions of the android apps installed meaning it can launch the app much quicker however if you dont wipe this, it can cause much more issues after installing a app mod lets say

You can wipe data but that wipes dalvik cache
Its probably better to wipe caches with a data wipe
