[Q] Cherry Mobile Candy Froyo SD Card Errors - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Don't laugh... I have a cherry mobile Candy (times are hard) running android 2.2 Froyo. Not that the phone has ever done what it claims to be capable of but now I seem to be facing much more serious issues. After WinMobile 6.1 I lost the time to focus on my favorite hobby playing with devices...Now I feel like a noob again with Droid so I need help, and thank any who does so ahead of time.
That said here is what I have been experiencing, what I was doing last, and how I have attempted to fix it.
My phone was working fine with gobs of apps on it. I decided to root my phone using z4root and it worked fine, slow but that has always been the case(Phone is still rooted) In an effort to speed up and take control of the device I attempted to use a few new apps, but found that support for my (Lame) device was not supported. They include: RomManager, SetCpu, and Battery Callibrator(<Suspect #1) The first 2 barely worked, I was able to run Fix permissions as I had had 1 app hanging and thought it might help. The batt. app was the last to be used and I followed instructions to a "T" phone was fine.
All of a sudden my phone starts loosing access to the sd card (Icons turn to default green) but eventually load. Soon the phone says sd card damaged. I safely removed the card ran it through Win 7 error check and it found a few errors which it repaired. I reinstalled the card to find the same error "SD card Damaged". I formatted another 8gb sd card and installed it into the phone. This time it would not even recognize the card. A few restarts later and again it found it but again damaged sd card error. I booted the phone into test and sometimes it would recognize other times not. I cleared the NAND Flash and reformatted the Sd card (Started Fresh) Same issues as before but now randomly the phone won't wake up once it has gone to Sleep (Standby) without a battery removal. I again reset the phone this time using recovery boot and cleared the data and cache I reformatted again a NEW SD card 1gb and same problems exist damaged/missing sd errors Not able to come out of sleep "Sleep Of Death" as I have heard it called and now wifi is acting up at my work (Not Home) in this sort of loop.
***When I do not have an sd card installed the phone works as it did before, these problems only arise when an SD card is physically installed on the device.
Recap:
Problems:
1. Phone not recognizing or SD card is Damaged error
2. "Sleep of Death" Not waking up after standby (Manual or auto and randomly)
3. Wifi loop never connect. (May be router and completely separate issue)
Attempted Fixes:
1.Hard Reset(Clear NAND Flash/Cache/Data)
2. Reformat and multiple different SD cards
3.Attempt to debug with SDK ADT(See Below please)
4.Reading countless page after page on forum after forum(Now I come to the pros)
After plugging my phone into my PC (Win 7 32bit) I discovered that there was no driver support for my (Again LAME) device. Much less any other type of help from Cherry Mobile. So I followed the instructions from xda and other forums to no avail. I still have no way of installing the driver on my PC to allow SDK to work.

So here is where I am at.
To all you amazing Mobile Tech wizards here at XDA I humbly ask for your help.
1.)Is my problem Hardware, Software, or Firmware based?
2.)Is there a way to repair it?
3.)If the way to repair it is through SDK how do I correctly install the driver I downloaded on my Win 7 PC?
4.)I saw commands in a forum for SDK ADT like rebuild Network, Files etc. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
5.) Is there anyone out there that can help me!!!!
One last time I thank you in advance for any and all help with my phone. ~Daniel

[Q] Can not mount external SD card

I have rooted my phone using TGA_Gunnman's one-click method.....everything was great - I am pretty sure my phones everyday performance is better now as a result. Of course, all the awesome things I can do now that I have root, make the phone that much better!
Yesterday, after no mods or changes my SD card became nor recognized by the phone. I get an error that the "Mount Point is absent or incorrect. Please unplug USB and try again." Of course I have tried unplugging, restarting, fixing permissions, unrooting, putting in a different SD card, nothing...NO access to SD. I am able to access the SD card from a computer so pretty sure its not the card.
I have searched and searched and searched the forums...I have not found anyone having a similar problem.
Does anyone have any suggested fix....or am I destined to return this handset for a dif one?
Thanks for any and all help.
kstar
So, due to lack of response, I can only assume the phone is faulty, and I will be heading to t-mobile store today.
Or am I really that slow and it is totally obvious?

did you try restoring the phone to factory settings?
Thanks for the suggestion....but a factory reset did not fix the problem.
I got that EXACT same error yesterday while I was tinkering trying to rename the memory card on the computer and phone. I unmounted it and then it started giving me this error. I DID fix it though I'm not sure WHICH one of the things I did fixed it so I will list everything I did while trying to lol.
1. Remove the card from the phone as it is powered on. Wait a few seconds and re-insert it. See if problem persists.
2. Power down phone, remove memory card. Power back on (without the card). Insert the memory card. See if problem persists.
3. With the phone and card in, attempt to connect to a computer in all 3 modes (Storage, Media Player, etc). See if it still can't mount it after you disconnect from the computer.
4. (I think this may have fixed it but not sure). With the phone on and card in, go into setting-->Applications-->Development-->USB Debugging. CHECK the box "USB debugging". Now connect the phone to your computer. It will warn you its in debugging mode, click ok. Open the notification menu on top when its connected (the one that slides down from top) and MOUNT the memory card + phone memory. Your computer should now recognize 2 new drives. Phone memory and the memory card. After this, disconnect the phone and it SHOULD be able to find the memory card and mount it CORRECTLY, fixing your problem for good.
Let me know if all of these don't work and I'll think if I missed something that I may have done while trying to fix it. It's not your memory card or the phone itself. It's the software which bugged. I wouldn't recommend you return it at all since its not faulty. The new one will do the same.
PS: If NOTHING works and I can't think of the thing that fixed mine, there IS something that WILL fix it guaranteed though I only recommend you do that as a last resort. If you reflash the phone to a different ROM, it will be fixed since the bug is in the software. There is the stock T-Mobile ROM provided on these forums somewhere if you want the same ROM (or as close to it as possible) that came with the phone (aka...as you got it out the box). Otherwise, you can flash into some custom rom (likely having some improvements too). All up to you. Though I only would recommend this if you REALLY have no other option.
Thank you - none of those options helped. I am not able to see the phone memory either. In other words, even when I have it plugged in to the computer and tell it to mount memory to the computer, no drive shows up. So I am unable to access any storage on the phone.
Why would this software issue just show up out of no where? I have had the phone since day 1......
Thank you!!!
Hmm...I was able to see the phone memory at least. Are you sure your phone doesn't even detect the phone memory? Cause that is quite odd. I remember my phone did not detect ANY memory card all the while giving me that message but it DID find its phone memory and could use that. Idk. I played with my phone an a USB cable for half an hour panicked that I did something to my phone or memory card till it finally worked. Your issue MAY be different though. In either case, I don't seem to remember anything else I did with it (maybe combination of those things I was listing? idk). Furthermore your issue may be different, even if related so I suppose start looking into the flashing process. You will need to flash if you want to return it anyway is my guess. So might as well.
I suggest you start looking here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747335
It's all the Roms for the Vibrant up to date. You will need Clockwork recovery and Odin to flash. The list has the official Tmobile ROM that your phone was shipped with. You can try that. It will return it to FULL stock, making it returnable and very likely fixing it. But if you're feeling adventurous you can try the custom ROMs.
Thanks for all your help - I ended up returning it b/c I didn't have the time to deal with it and have now run into a new problem of apps not installing from the market. They actually install for the first five minutes after wiping the phone, but then the installing was unsuccessful. I got two different replacements today and a new sim card, spent half my afternoon on the phone with 611...still no apps.....
Edit: found the fix for inability to download apps
settings>applications>manage applications>menu>filter, all>download manage>clear data
Of course, on my third vibrant and this is the only one with the menu button lag......i will be patient.....
I just had exactly the same problem with my Galaxy S. The problem was, My internal phone memory was unmounted after flashing a new firmware. Once I mounted it, it worked.
Menu > Settings > SD Card and Phone Storage > Mount SD Card (under Internal SD Card)
This mounted both internal and external cards and I'm now good to go!!
I have this exact same error right now and nothing is working.
Also, I do not have the option of returning the phone because it was a private sale and i bought the phone off of someone. He has the receipt but I wonder what I can do since he paid for it under his credit card and its in his name?
tks }{Alienz}{,
I got this can not mount external sd card message and following your step 2, it`s working now! just to remember, step 2 is:
2. Power down phone, remove memory card. Power back on (without the card). Insert the memory card.

Samsung vibrant unrooted yet =]
I had the same problem and #2 worked for me as well. Thank you!
I have a similar problem. I flashed axura and since then when I plug in my phone It never gives me the option to mount my phone. Has anyone found a fix for this?
- took the longest time to fix this. anyone having the same problem. i fixed it by getting a samsung usb cord. for whatever reason my phone wouldnt realize it was connected to the computer without it

[Q] phone drives won't map in windows 7

first off, wanted to say I've done a bit of searching, but never really found a workable solution to this problem...
I'm running windows 7 x64
At one point I had no problem finding my phones drives on my system. Everything was working fine. I went to format the SD card for ext4, but the windows program (blanking on name) wouldn't correctly recognize my SD card. I ended up using my ubuntu boot disk. However during all that my system somehow got completely screwed. I can't get the phones drives to appear in windows.
I have all the drivers for my vibrant installed on my laptop, but when i plug the phone in the drives don't appear. In device manager it shows two new disk drives (samsung sgh-t959 card usb device and samsung sgh-t959 usb device) without any problems when it's plugged in.
Odin recognizes the phone in DL mode without a problem, and I've flashed to stock a few times through it, as well as flashing jac's kernel. My desktop recognizes the phone, but I'm rarely home and would like to use my laptop to put mods for clockworkmod on my phone, as it's a lot easier to use than odin.
I've reinstalled more than a few times and it's always the same, drivers show up and work, drives dont.
Does anyone know how to get this working again?

Argh... 2nd time this happened.

I dont really know what happened to the phone but for some reason, USB debugging and usb mass storage mounting has been disabled. It works fine in all other aspects except these two.
The first time it happened, it was fresh from a repair for not turning on anymore... That was easily fixed by LG within a day. The tech dude said something about "software upgrading".
The second time it happened, i was installing new apps straight to the SD and it wouldnt finish for like 10 minutes. So i turned it off and on again. Now everything found on my SD card wouldnt load and Settings would force close on me when I try to make it show all the apps on my phone.
I was wondering if this is a problem with apps2sd which I used... Maybe my memory card is too slow (class2) for the phone to install directly to it. Does anyone know what happened?
Hello
I used app2sd and my phone rebooted for no reason. Now after uninstalling it works fine. The unmount issue is common to P500. Probably it will be fixed on Gingerbread firmware.
So I'll have to hold off on customizing my phone until Gingerbread? =c
Guess I'll have to stick to phone memory for the apps not movable to the Sd on their own...
Also, I believe my problem goes beyond just the unmounting issue... I'll try to have the phone reformat the card when I get it back (soon I hope... I already sent it to LG)
It wouldnt show me that USB debugging and mass storage mounting is on even though those are checked on the Settings screen. When I connected the USB cable before with those settings on, there would be 2 icons on the notification bar that indicates that the two are working. I dont get those 2 icons now...
I'll try to have FroYo move the apps to SD after installing to phone memory when I get it back. Maybe that will solve the "taking forever to install" issue.
I hope the SD card reformatting by the phone would solve the slow SD card loading issue.
Which would leave the USB debugging and mass storage mounting issue... T__T
I don't really have the sudden SD card unmounting problem....

[Q] SD Card Problems

Hi all.
Here's the situation:
I have a 32 gb Sandisk (unsure of the class) sd card I've used with 2 different phones for at least over a year now. I took the card out of my phone to connect it through my laptops built in card reader for the purpose of transferring large files (card reader speeds are much faster than usb mounting through the phone for me). When I put it in the computer Windows wouldn't recognize it. Now it won't mount in my phone at all, and it won't work correctly on my PC. When I connect it to my computer it says the card needs to be formatted before use, but then when I go to format it, it shows up on the Windows formatting screen as only having a 30.6 mb capacity and I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format" whenever I try to format it, no matter the settings.
So my question is, how do I get the darn thing to work again? I think something must have happened between shutting my phone down to remove it and putting it in my computer. I just don't know what. Anyone else ever experience this? (I've already given up on recovering all of my files, but if it's possible to save them that would be amazing )
Things I've tried:
formatting via Windows
formatting via android
formatting /external_sd via Clockworkmod recovery
a couple different data recovery/partitioning programs (Partition Wizard and PhotoRec/TestDisk
also using "chkdsk" in windows command prompt returns saying that the disk is in the "RAW" format.
Additional info:
Phone: Motorola Droid RAZR HD (XT926) (Verizon)
ROM: XenonHD 11.01 (Android version 4.2.2, AOSP based)
Sorry if this is more lengthy than necessary, just trying to be thorough and cover all the bases!
Thanks in advance for your help!

NT/USB CONNECT: MTP then USB COMPOSITE then NT but no joy!!

I've had this problem for a while (not being able to connect my NT to my computer) and can't seem to resolve it. I happened to have to upgrade my hard drive and hoped the clean install of XP would fix it but it didn't!
When I connect my NT to the computer via USB (running Paranoid Android 3.01 off 32GB class 4 Sandisk SD card, and yes, I have USB Debugging enabled) I get the following:
The NT is recognized as the following devices, in this order:
MTP
Composite USB
Nook Tablet
The hardware installer opens after each "device" is recognized. Finally I get to Nook Tablet after cancelling the two previous hardware install requests but a third pops up and then I get a message that there was a problem with the installation!
I had been able to fix this problem previously by running usbdview and uninstalling each device, then deleting the device drive letter assignment, and finally running my Norton 360 Registry Cleanup Utility. But, now, that just isn't working!
I surmised that I was having a problem with the drivers. So, I surfed the web and found the USB Driver Zip file from Indirect's OP on rooting and installed them on my computer again. No luck.
I managed to get into a log file (don't ask me what it was called, I forgot) that was in the WINDOWS/DRIVERS/i386 folder. It mentioned a paging error occurred during the process of attempting to connect the NT to the computer. Does this mean my SD card is bad? I have had no problems using it to run the PA ROM on my NT, at all. From what I read however, that I could try to understand, a paging error has something to do with a problem with the SD card? Certainly I can just reinstall the ROM, in another card if necessary, or load a new one. However, I'd like to be able to get my content off the card without having to drop box all the files to myself (a decent but slow workaround).
I know I could try to use ADB over my wireless connection somehow to achieve this as well, but that is over my head right now.
Any suggestions regarding what is going on here would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It's not clear from your post if you're merely try to connect the NT to your PC via USB for media content transfer, or for ADB access.
If the latter, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35971559&postcount=13 might be of help.
Oops, sorry. Just for content access/transfer.
Actually tonight my device seemed to reboot while I was in the middle of composing a document (data viz word). It's never done THAT before. Interestingly, it seemed to skip cyanoboot and go right to the SD ROM. The WiFi needed to be manually connected thereafter (usually auto connects). The reason I think it rebooted and it wasn't the screen flaking out as a problem is it went black and then right to the first animation for PA 3.01. But this seems to make no sense!
Maybe the SD card IS failing?
Yes, I am trying to avoid having to learn ADB access. Too tired (you know why Digi.) If I must, I will shell out for a new card and maybe try one of your newer ROMS......it's probably time for that anyway. But the card is only 6 months old
I will test out trying to access the NT on the computer via USB without the SD card mounted. Maybe that will shed some light.
Thanks as always.
