Already on 2.3.5 (Photon 4G) - Motorola Photon 4G

Guyz i just bought this phone, and it is already updated to 2.3.5...im so depressed...is there any way or can u see anything in the near future that will unlock the 2.3.5 bootloader..! bought it online..dont know how to return it back..im stuck with stock rom...i want CM9... Is there any hope..?

No Worries Needed...
well, you can be sure that in closed future you'll be able to unlock your bootloader but till that promotion you can simply root your device, install rom manager, flash clockworkmod recovery.
Start rooting your device here:http://www.unlockroot.com/index.htm

Of course there are some suitable & useful links on XDA but most unfortunately, this website is banned in my country and takes me a long time to provide you these links,I'm so sorry about that.
But----> have a look at this,where you should start:http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1223

That sux man, I got my mopho off cowboom last week and it came with 2.3.4. If its ang consolation I tried cm9 but it wasnt polished to my liking as of yet (no chrome or opera browser and multitouch games sucked)
Pretty much only thing an unlocked bootloader will allow you is custom kernels and I personally love the stock 2.3.5 kernel

you might want to look into using PROMS to get your modding fix until we find a way around the fuse issue. i believe proms are themed roms that run over stock.

[Q] Does anyone know if there's going to be a Sprint Lover's ROM?

I really liked the Sprint Lover's ROMs back in the day with my TP2. I skipped over getting an EVO 4G, so I missed out on those. Has anyone talked to Chris?
The last I knew, he moved over to iOS since he got an iPhone.

Im sure someone will pick up the torch and carry on the tradition . There always has been someone and Im sure there will be someone that does it for the EVO3D . Again give the devs some time root hasnt been out that long yet . Although I am stoked that Netarchy is already on the scene putting out kernels .

So, is this root fully functional, or should I wait until they fully release the unlocked bootloader? Or is there no difference?

If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
There is a developer in the Evo 0G forum that has tried to follow in Chris's footsteps and put out a new Sprint Lover's Rom but it is no where close to being the great product that Chris put out. He was always timely with updates and included all the bling without losing the stock sprint feel. The community lost a great rom builder when Chris switched to the dark side and went iphone.
Well, that's just ****ty as all hell. I need to get into this ROM building thing. I've got some ideas for a couple good roms.

No need to wait, we got S-off, eng. Hboot, full root and recovery. HTC's unlocked bootloader isn't needed and it'll void your warranty

So my question is, right now as it stands, if i get the Photon I can root it & run all the root apps & functions & still have 4G, but from the bits i read, if I unlocked the bootloader as well, Ill lose 4G, can sumone clear this up for me?

You are correct. But you can unlock the bootloader and then lock it back up. So its like this:
Root and Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Install one of the only two ROMS we currently have
re-lock bootloader
Install bootstrap recovery
install updates to whichever ROM you want through bootstrap
Enjoy custom ROM with locked bootloader and 4g love
It is really just an extra step until we get the kernel source code. This is an absolute great phone and we have great people in this forum to help you out. There are quite a few guides on how to do all of this, if you want to PM me I can help you one on one get it done if need be. Other than that, hope to see you around these parts

I don't know, I find it pretty easy to do, and I'm not very good at adb stuff. I believe there is a one click root tool also and it only takes like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader.
So I think the whole thing is pretty easy myself. Up to you really.

I had an ogEvo as well and new to the whole bootstrap but most of this stuff just sounds complex. Really isn't a huge deal once you get your feet wet. I had the same reservations when getting the ogEVO but over time ended up doing about everything to it. Never borked it once.

Yea, it really isn't that bad, a bootstrap is more harmless than a real recovery actually. Its just like installing an app from the market really.
And on the borking the android phones. I think this is extremely hard to do because I had an OgEvo and I don't think I could have bricked that if I tried. I think Android is some of the most user friendliest software out there in my opinion. I even thought I bricked my Photon the other day, but I didn't, you always just find out it's user error 99% of the time!
At least for me it is. lol
As for the root/unlock process with the photon, I think it is very easy once you run through it a couple times. I may make a video so people aren't so scared to try it out.

I suggest that you start your own thread, (I don't have an issue with you posting about this here), but you'd get more responses for help if you post in a new thread. The only people that will read this are the few with bootloader news, like I said, the few. But, if you ask for help in a new thread, chances are, you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck!
You can unlock your bootloader, flash cm7 (or your rom of choice), and relock your bootloader, and then voila.
CM7 with 4g.
But dont use those as exact intructions LOL.
Theyre are threads about it. Look in the dev section.
You might want to try that out before you suggest it.

Should I Upgrade?

I've been using the 198_6 sbf with no serious issues and was wondering if I should flash the 198_7 sbf. Are there any major enhancements or benefits?
Im wondering the same, Im from Ecuador so I use gsm. Updating will cause any trouble?
Funny, I tried to root like 2 weeks ago and messed it up. I put on 198_7 and my phone as been a dream every since. Bluetooth and Pandora work great. No dropped calls. GREAT battery. Web is fast. Facebook is flawless. Youtube is fast on 3G. Camera is great. Thats why I have "Root no more" in my siggy!
Can anyone see what has been changed in 198_7 compared to 198_6? I know Motorola has not officially released it yet nor have they provided any documentation.
Any guess as to why 198_7 hasn't been OTA'd yet? Do you think M found a problem with it? It was leaked so long ago...
sorry sjamie, I canot answer your question and likely could not tell the difference if I put my mind to it!!! All I can say is, my phone works flawless!

To be honest, I have no clue what I was on before. I rooted and unlocked @ 2 months back. 2 weeks ago EXACTLY today I decided I wanted CM9 for a spin. **** went downhill and Shabby gave me 198_7 and I have been cool every since?
Just keep in mind 2 things, most important, make sure you have 100% battery (I did not, had to cut USB cable and tie white wire to + and black wire to -. You cannot use phone to charge, I have wall charger now) Lastly, you loose everything, just like the day you got it from the Sprint Store!
Sprint/Motorola did officially release 198.7. I know because while in the US the update was pushed to my phone.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Motorola nor Sprint officially released 198_7. I do have the SBF for it and will probably flash it due to dsims' sheer enthusiasm!

It was a leak, we need a new leak from Motorola, this was not a hack at all so we can't just reuse something.
First of all, THANK YOU everyone for taking some time to answer every question. I really appreciate it. I have been reading, and reading for hours...my eyes are starting to bleed.
So... there is NO WAY we can get a better Android than the 2.3.5?
My build number says 4.5.1A_SUN_USC_19.0, that means I cannot unlock the bootloader, isn't it?
Is there another way (hack?) to improve the performance of the cellphone? I have root it, just to change some files I couldn't, e.g. the sound of the camera.
And finally... is it THAT bad being stucked on 2.3.5?

Thank you, I'll search about "kexec".
The reason I was asking if I was stuck on 2.3.5 was regarding to my build number. I don't know how to conclude it's an ota or not.
You can attempt the Pudding Bootloader unlock, it is unlikely to succeed, but it may be possible. You do risk bricking the device though.

Unlocked bootloader
Well, it appears that I am still the only Photon owner around with 2.3.5 and an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately mine was some sort of freak accident that it happened. I can run run custom recovery and flash all day long. Unfortunately if I install a ROM with any other version (or maybe it's the kernal) it will not work. It will boot up fine but nothing will connect at all. I've tried almost all of them........
