signature verification failed - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So i did a quick search and couldnt really find anything on the Q&A forums about this...so here goes
i just installed the UCLD3 kernel no problem on my i717. however when i go into CWM and try to install the new CM9 mod that is posted in development i get "signature verification failed". I cant find any way to disable signature verification (since even in the title of the thread it SAYS its unsigned, and i understand that) so that it will install anyway.
what can i do?
p.s. hello forums. first post although i peruse these forums all the time

One of two things
In clockwork there should be an option to toggle signature verification if I'm not mistaken
Or you have a bad download
But I'm pretty sure its the first
Look in advanced in CWM
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

in my old kernel i had an advanced tab in CWM, but since i just updated to UCLD3 now there is no advanced button. i only have
reboot system
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
and thats it. its probably not the download since they already say its "unsigned". I just dont know how to get CWM to not check for the signature...
is CWM independent of the kernel and i can reinstall it or is there another way?

Yes, cwm.is seperate from the kernel, what you have if 3e recovery (stock recovery)
NOT cwm at all.
Grab cwm here
You'll want the Odin flashable version.
Happy flashing

then your solution is likely the same...
If you have CWM, then toggle "off" signature verification.
If you have 3e recovery, then you need to install CWM recovery......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584576
If you already have CWM recovery, and you have turned "off" signature verification in the recovery and still the verification fails, then you have a bad download copy.......g

[Q] Villianrom help - Galaxy S II

Hey everyone, first post!
Before I begin, I should tell you that I have tried the search function, but it is currently down.
I'm having an issue flashing the latest Villianrom to my phone Which I read about and downloaded here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334
I followed these instructions to update my phone: http://androidadvices.com/how-to-up...ii-i9100-to-gingerbread-xwkdd-2-3-3-firmware/
Then followed these instructions on how to root: http://androidadvices.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s-2-i9100-tutorial/
Everything seems to have gone well, aside from the yellow yield symbol displayed on startup. I have downloaded Rom Manager from the market, pushed the 'flash ClockworkMod Recovery' option, and that seems to have gone smoothly as well.
Here is where the problem comes...when I go to 'Install ROM fromSD Card' I scroll down and select VillianROM-2.4.2-signed.zip. I check the boxes marked 'Backup Existing ROM', 'Wipe Data and Cache', and 'Wipe Dalvik Cache'. From there it wants to Reboot and Install, saying press ok to reboot into clockwork mod recovery and continue you the installation.
The phone reboots, and I'm getting an E:failed to verify whole-file signature and an E:signature verification failed installation aborted.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? What have I done wrong?
Some basic info:
Phone - Samsung Galaxy S II
Carrier - Bell
Android version - 2.3.3
Baseband version - I9100XXKDH
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] #2
Build number - Gingerbread.xwkdd
Upon further reading it seems I haven't been booting into CWM recovery...please disregard and close this post
Good job finding the answer by reading
Just an FYI, rom manager wont work with most CWM kernels (only codeworxs), and you also cant flash CWM via rom manager (it just does a fake flash). (Go cf-root in cause you didn't work it out)
Get odin for pc
Flash the cf-root kernel (or whatever kernel you want that also includes Clockwork recovery)
Then enter recovery mode on your phone, and flash the villain rom zip file from within recovery.
--
You are getting verification errors because you dont have clockworkmod recovery - you have default 3e recovery)
Ditch rom manager and follow my steps above.
Read up and learn before flashing/installing anything.

Which method did you use to root? Did you install cwm enabled kernel? If you used entropy's kernel + rooted system package the kernel is stock with 3e recovery.
yes
used rooted kernal via odin.

cm7 from nighties. is there only certain roms i can install.
Did you install ROMManager and install CWM from there? If that's the case it won't work. I did the same thing and it kept on getting the same error you have. Start the root process from step 1 and don't install RomManager. Flash CM7 by booting into CWM using the 3 button boot.
i now have root but with stock recovery 3e. how do i get cwm recovery now. thanks. btw, what is the three button boot.
You have to flash your recovery image using this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823
Hold down Volume Up/Down and power until the Galaxy S2 screen comes up, then let go of power to get into CWM (CWM = ClockworksMod)
Toggling in the cwm menu worked for me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
If you used ROM Manager - don't.
Flash a kernel that has CWM (either codeworkx's or mine) using Odin/Heimdall, then enter recovery using the three-finger salute.
If you use ROM Manager's recovery, nothing will work right.
cwm
i have cwm installed via kernel. i do the 3 button boot and get to cwm. i also toggled signature to disabled. when i try to install cm7 over stock rooted image it aborts. doesn't say signature verification failed, something about buildprop. thanks.

Most likely you're trying to flash an I9100 build and not the correct CM7 build for our device (I777).
correct
i believe you are correct. can not find the full cm7att zip. only the update and when installed, it locks at the samsung s II logo. then have to restore my stock backup. thanks.
CM7.1 just got released into stable. http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2att
That's for the ATT version. You can flash that.
tried that
that is the one that locks it up, it is an update, i need full. thanks.
I am also having the same exact issue with the verification.

Official release zips are marked as "update" even when they're a full release, mainly because they're no-wipe I think.
The build system names it "update" even when it's full. The 100 MB file size should be a hint that it's not just an update...
I also had this problem, but I used Rom Manager to flash cwm, which I shouldn't have. Flashed back to stock, re-rooted, reflashed CWM the correct way and have no problems.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery - failed to verify whole-file signature

Hello! I installed a mod for my Samsung Galaxy SII so I could overclock the CPU to 1.5Ghz. Since I'm new here I can't post the link to the tutorial I followed. But you can just search "Samsung Galaxy S2 how to overclock to 1.5GHz" and select the search result from "androidng". I don't think it matters anyway. It says that I have the kernel version "2.6.65.8-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] #59". Now I want to install CyanogenMod for it and I've already downloaded ROM Manager Premium 4.8.0.6 and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery which removed the default recovery mode from Samsung / Google. But when I try to install the ROM from my SD card in the recovery mode it says "failed to verify whole-file signature". Is it possible to get rid of the ClockworkMod Recovery and get the stock recovery back that enable me to flash over USB with Odin. It seems like a lot of people have that error but I can't find any answer to solve it. Someone suggested to disable signature verification but I can't find it, I think it is in an earlier version. Will the "factory reset" option in the menu reset everything to Samsung's stock ROM without the recovery mode and will it backup files, settings and apps? (Probably it is not working either because nothing on that menu works except restart)
Sounds to me like you still have stock recovery, you're not going to get CWM recovery from ROM manager.
I don't know what the CWM recovery is but I'm sure I don't have the stock recovery. The stock recovery from Samsung don't have that menu that says "Android System Recovery <3e>, on the stock recovery it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target" and has a big Android image.

Yes, yes it does. What you're describing is download mode.
Ah. I thought the volume up did the same as the volume down. I started the phone in downloader mode now but I still don't know how to get rid of the "failed to verify whole-file signature" error.
Considering you're trying to install CM7, read the FAQ thread in this very forum carefully. One of the first instructions is to flash a specific kernel which includes CWM recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
You should flash a cf root kernel this will give you all you need including cwm manager which allows you to reboot straight into clockwork recovery.

I rooted with CF-Root and then flashed back to stock Kernel and root has remained. Now when I go to boot into CWM Recovery I get the "failed to verify signature" error on the screen that says Android recovery <3e>.
Is it because I flashed back to stock Kernel that this is happening?

Where in the instructions to install CM7 does it say to do anything with stock kernel or CF-root kernel? Hint: it doesn't. Follow the instructions to the letter, they're not there to look pretty, they're meant to be followed.
Also, a 5 second search would tell you that Android recovery 3e is not CWM recovery.

When you flash from CF-Root back to a stock Kernel, you LOSE root. You will still have the CWM app but you will notice that superuser is missing.

I had the same problem bought ROM Manager expecting my phone to reboot and CM7 would install but it dosen't well not the first time anyway. You need to install CM7 manually via Clockwork Recovery, once CM7 is installed you can then use ROM manager to install other ROM's but since there have been no nightly builds from November it seems that ROM Manager was £4 down the drain.

Something is odd with mine then. I've flashed every XW and XX frankenstein ROM and each time I did the kernal flash dance in order to remove the warning triangle. When I flashed the stock kernel back in, I always lost root. Superuser disappeared and Tegrak overclock gave me the error that root access was not available each time.

Hi, I had the same problem you did when trying to do the nandroid backup. It was giving me validation signature error. I noticed that you have solved your problem by flashing the stock kernel?? Can you please refer me the link how to do this? Sorry, I was trying to find the solution for a long time and did not have any luck.
My concern is that if I only have instruction how to do the backup through the CMW recovery, but I don't have access due to this error message. Is there a way to flash stock kernel via odin or something else?
Thanks in advance.

You tried to flash a custom what? Rom or kernel?
Have you done ANY searching or reading of the stickies before you jumped into modding your phone? If you are unfamiliar with 3e recovery you have no business attempting any mods just yet. Start reading and learn before doing.

If you got some type of error, you might just need to re-download the rom again. you could've just gotten a bad download.

3e recovery can't flash anything except files that Samsung has signed, you need to use CWM. You cannot use ROM Manager to install CWM.

No problem man glad to help, but yes "recovery" is for recovering something when something with your ROM goes wrong, but it can also be used for basic maintenance functions such as reformatting things, as well as flashing certain scripts, kernels, mods etc.
