[Q] USB Connection Issues - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
I've looked all over the web trying to find a solution for this particular problem but I'm yet to find a solution and I hope you nice fellows at XDA can help me out.
My situtation is that whenever I connect my phone to my computer, all goes well, until I tap that nasty little 'USB Tethering' button, then all goes to hell. My computer then can't find my until I disable it again.
Transferring files over works flawlessly, all works well until I press USB tethering.
So my question is, how do I fix this? I need this to work for me to use my computers internet connection on my phone.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
~Filb
P.S. I'm on CM9 Nightlies.
EDIT: I have USB debugging enabled, without it my computer can't find my phone whatsoever. All the correct drivers are installed (via Kies recently).
EDIT 2: Ok, now my computer recognizes my device when I enable USB tethering. But when I check the network, it says that it's an 'Unidentified Network'.

Still in need of help.
Anybody?

This is a forum, not an instant help IM client. If someone hasn't responded to your inquiry yet, it's because no one who knows the answer to your question has read your post yet. When someone does, they will answer.
And that's not what usb tethering does. Usb tethering lets you use your phone's internet on your computer. Sounds like you want to reverse tether.

I posted the above post so my thread doesn't get lost, and if somebody knows the answer, then they'd see the post instead of it being lost, and me never getting any help.
I do want to reverse tether, but I can't do that until this problem is fixed.
EDIT: And me thinking this is a Q&A forum, silly me.

ctomgee answered your question. Turn off USB tethering. Thats used to connect a laptop/PC to the internet through your phone. It has nothing to do with browsing or copying your files from phone to PC.

I didn't say anything about this NOT being a Q&A forum. But bumping your thread after only 3 hours is ridiculously impatient, and technically violates one of the forum rules.
Also, I'm not positive since I don't actually use reverse tether, but I'm fairly certain you don't do it by turning on usb tethering.

I tried it as some user posted about some app from market, but it never worked.
As far I think, reverse tether doesn't work on s2

I bumped my post because it went to second page, I guess that's a little impatient and I'm sorry about that.
Regarding the reverse tether, USB tethering must be enabled to use the app 'Reverse Tether', so that's where the problem is.
@Bored_Stupid My problem isn't transferring files, that works fine. It's just when I enable USB tethering, the connection from my phone to my pc is lost therefore disabling me from using the app I need for reverse tether.

Are you talking about this app? As far as I can tell, you are NOT supposed to activate USB tethering to use this app. Is that not accurate? Or am I reading it wrong?
EDIT: I just watched the video. The app actually activates tethering when you turn it on. Sorry. Well, maybe this is an issue with CM9? I dunno. Try checking the CM9 nightlies discussion thread.

Yup, that's the app.
You must have USB tethering enabled for the reverse tether process to initiate, otherwise it won't start.
I don't think it's CM9 as it was working a few days ago when I just flashed the ROM, but I'll check anyway.

[Q] Free USB Tether like Barnicle?

Hey all,
I was wondering if there is a barnicle-like, free app so that I am able to use USB Tethering and charge my phone while I'm at school using their desktop computers? or am I just blind and its in the settings somewhere.
Thanks in advance

I was looking for the same thing since the stupid computers at my school don't have wireless network adapters built in. If we can get the bootloader unlocked then we could get a vanilla (plain) Android ROM, possibly 2.3. With Google's stock Android there is the option for USB and Mobile AP (USB tethering and WiFi tethering).
Sorry I couldn't help.
You could pay for tethering like I don't know responsible people. If you can't pay for something you should not steal it.
If you payed for tethering and you wanted USB tethering then you can get barnacle by enabling sideloading and finding it on line (a simple google search should find it).
1. I'm in Aus, tethering is free
2. I have barnacle, it doesn't USB tether. key word being USB!
sorry but you should at least read the OP before posting yourself.

perfect and exactly what I needed, doesn't work with debugging though which I found out shortly after installing xD

[Q] "No network connectivity" using built-in tether methods

Hi Everyone,
First of all, I DID search on the forums for this same issue and I didn't find any solution.
So here is my problem:
I have an Atrix w/ 4.5.91 stock ROM (unlocked/rooted). Modified settings.db so Entitlement Check is set to 0. My carrier is Personal Argentina.
I can enable wifi and usb tethering but none of those would work. I get "no internet connectivity" on my Windows 7 computer with both of them, no matter what I do. BUT if I use a third-party app like EasyTether, it works like a charm.
I usually don't like installing 3rdparty apps/drivers on my work laptop, so my question is: Is there any way of troubleshoot this issue / did this happen to anyone? Is there anything I can change to make it work?
Thank you a lot!

Try android tether. Nothing to install on laptop. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. Only problem I found on hubby's new epic 4g touch is after turning it off, wifi wont work again which is solved by a reboot.

Thank you. I'll check it out but sitll USB would be a great option whenever I have to save battery.
Apart from that I'd really like to know why the native apps for tethering are not working. Maybe they use a different method?
Try setting the entitlement check to "disabled" with no quotes. That's how mine worked..

[Q] Tethering with rooted ICS phone

I have searched extensively on Google, and XDA but can't find the right answer.
I want to tether my phone. I can do this directly in Android but my current carrier brings up a message in the browser saying it's not supported on my current plan.
I'm addressing this, but in the mean time I'm curious if there is a way round it, hypothetically.
I have seen some Apps, such as ClockWork Mod Tether, but since my phone is rooted I wondered if there is a more elegant solution that doesn't involve any software to be added to my PC.
I read about using TB to freeze a specific App/Process but couldn't find any details.
Any advice would be great,
thanks

HOW have you not heard of android wifi tether? One of the first reasons I had for rooting the first Android phone I got.
There's also Barnacle Tether, available on the play store.
Guess Barnacle is gone... but there are other tethering apps on the play store though.
And I'm wrong again. Barnacle is still there, but doesn't show up when I search from my phone. How curious.
Since your phone is rooted you can download wireless tether.
Google it and you will easily find the download link or even directly via the play store.

I appreciate the reply, but if you read my post again the issue I'm having is not an app to enable wifi tether directly on the handset, it's that the packet data is being detected as not from the phone so I get a message, on the computer, in the internet browser saying my priceplan doesn't include tethering. I cant get around this 3 website redirect. So, I need a way to tether, without the network knowing... The apps you mention work when the block is at the phone level I believe.... This is something different Three is doing..
Please correct me if I'm wrong though...
Oh, and as for the apps not showing up, the mobile phone providers asked google to block these apps for certain customers.. if you connect to a wifi network when in flight mode, and go the google market, you should still be able to see them...

I WAS on wifi.
And did you ACTUALLY download the tether app and try, or were you using the tether built into the settings of Android? Because it sure doesn't sound like you downloaded the app...
And I don't have tethering on my carrier plan, but the tether app works just fine for me.

Initially when I first posted I was trying the built in app but I downloaded the app you suggested anyway, but it didn't work. would connect to the computer but no data connection. Unsure if its an app problem or still a three problem, but I don't see how this app would fix the three problem. Does it somehow mask the PC data connection??? I couldn't see anything in the settings or set up that suggest that it would, it just looks like a more feature rich wifi hotspot app?? In addition I found mention that that others with my issue have also tried these apps like barnacle and it didn;t resolve the problem....

They can suspend your service if they discover you are doing tethering on your device if you are not alowed in your current plan.
I Hope you wont have any issues.
Otherwise it is possible that the sim card lock the feature even on rooted phone when detect thetering or it is impossible ?

yes I suppose they could do, but like I say I'm resolving this with my contract. It's more that I'm curious how they are doing it, and on principle don't like being told what I can and can't do
It can't be a sim lock.
I just tried tethering a Macbook, and amazingly that worked!.. SO, It must be something to do with the Packet Headers I'm guessing.. Or they are doing some other more detailed packet sniffing... It means there is definitely a software route around it... Need a clever developer to read this thread
I guess clockworkMod Tether might work, but I want a solution without a PC install..

That doesn't make any sense. If it works with a mac book, it should work with your windows machine too. Unless your windows machine has some kind of proxy?

When you use thetering, you embark to the provider internet network.
for example my provider is Bell Canada and their proxy is web.wireless.bell.ca
this one is for the device internet
for the thetering one they use another configuration settings when i connect my device to the computer.
What happen is when you plug your device to the computer, a signal is sent to the provider stating you entered in thetering mode. You don't have access to thetering so your internet connection is limited to the walled garden of the provider stating you are not subscrided to the service. Thats why i think they blocked the port 80 on your device and redirect you to that page.
Now for the Macintosh story.. It is not impossible that you can connect without problem with a mac and safari. I know a lot of people emulating a handled device with the Mac and the safari browser and those peeps didnt had a thetering plan.
The differences came with the drivers installed. Mac OS one are quite different in term of functionality than windows, thats why maybe the provider is able to sniff more easily people using windows but i am not a senior programmer. I am currently taking courses to become one but for now it is only suppositions. If i am wrong feel free to correct me but I am quite sure about what i am saying and that's why you dont have issues with a mac

This sounds correct to me. I'm pretty annoyed though. Only had the contract a month, I was told I could move onto a more expensive plan within contract if I needed more allowance etc.. Phone up 3, not only do they not let you PAY MORE for a different plan, but they also don't let anyone shift onto the one plan ever, unless its a new contract.. So basically **** them... so even if I want to pay extra for tethering I can't... absolute nonsense...
I had the same issue with three. I downloaded masqued crusader from play store. Activated it and then started wireless/usb tether. It worked. That was a while back tho. On a payg sim card on a galaxy s on gb. Its worth a try though.

[Q] Share PC Internet connection to my S2 via USB and other way around

Hi, I've looked at the other threads but I can't find any definite answers among them (either lacking or requiring additional equipment).
Anyway, my first question is how do I share my laptop's wifi connection (connected to my school's wifi, but they limit access to 1 MAC ID per student) to my S2, through USB? Like, is there an app/program/setting I can just use upon hooking up my S2 to my laptop and it can share its Internet connection to my phone?
Second question is how to work it the other way around, like if I have the wifi connection restricted to my S2 only, and share its internet connection to my laptop (and if it's possible wirelessly, to my iPod touch as well).
Thank you for any help. Cheers :good:
I am using 4.0.3 ICS on my I9100 S2, standard Win7 laptop.
Don't think you can via USB, phone doesn't have those capabilities. I guess you'd have to do it via WiFi. I imagine you'd setup some kind of 'server'/whatever software on the laptop similar to how you setup an SSH tunnel/relay (which involves your phone connecting to a host machine remotely which uses a secure connection to use the internet rather than accessing it normally via your carrier).
There's probably threads on here which would have the info you're after, but don't use XDA search; do a Google search & append XDA to your search terms. Gets better results in my experience. Also a straight out Google search should yield the info you want (it's not going to be easy tho; expect to do a lot of reading/fiddling).
Re: using the phone as a WiFi hotspot for the laptop, again, many many threads on here/Google search about setting up same. Re: doing anything with the iPod touch, you should know you're in the wrong place for that.

[Q] Tethering as a wifi adapter

I'm on the Infinity ROM and looking to use my phone as a wifi adapter. I used to be able to just disable Mobile Data and turn on usb tethering but this ROM seems to automatically turn off wifi when I turn on tethering. Is there any way to get around this? I'd like to at least get to use it to tether if not as a native adapter(connect to wifi from computer instead of setting it up on phone).

Not using your particular ROM. Nor will the majority of people reading this thread. Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to ask in the support thread for that custom ROM?
Alternately, what you are trying to do is usually referred to as reverse tethering.
So look in the Play store for reverse tethering apps e.g. this or this.

The OP prolly can't post in development threads due to post count.
And what they want is NOT reverse tethering. Reverse tethering is using the computer internet on the phone. Meaning, the phone does not have a data connection or a wifi connection and wants to obtain internet through the USB port (meaning computer)
What the OP described is the proper way to tether the WiFi connection of the phone to the computer. Not sure why its turning off his WiFi.
OP, if you turn on USB tethering and disable data, then turn on wifi, what happens?
