I have a gsm evo and am reluctant about going to ICS because you have to flash a firmware. What does this firmware do? And if I flash that, does it mean I can't then flash a 2.3 rom?

Not sure about gsm because I'm cdma but I can tell you that this morning I was on ics then ran the 2.08 ruu (gb), then ran the 2.17 ruu (gb), then reinstalled ics. All went fine.
Yes.. It does..

Find a rom that doesn't require the firmware

The firmware is the radio, it just "adapt" your phone to ics. If you want to go back to GB you just have to flash a RUU from bootloader and it's done.

The best kernel for the stock rom is the ONLY kernel for the stock rom, i.e. the stock kernel.
I followed the guide to downgrade and get S-off. Then I immediately flashed my Evo 3D to Cricket. So will flashing the newest GB firmware (I think its 2.17) remove my flash to Cricket?

No, I upgraded and everything works fine.....
no, flashing any roms will keep you on Cricket. I've had cricket for almost a year now and i'm a flashoholic... If you want to go back to sprint, there is more you have to do. Bottom line, flash away!
Alright, thanks guys!

i have a evo3d flashed to boost, and doing s-off messed up my flash, but before that, I upgraded from 2.08ruu to 2.17 ruu, and had no problems.... i personally have not wanted to flash firmware for any rom since downgrading messed up my flash, but you can easily flash any rom, ICS, or GB, and should have no problems
The reason I asked is because I think I saw that the 2.17 firmware is required to run certain ROMs??? Can anyone confirm this?

Until the ruu is officially released, you're kinda stuck. As an alternative, you can download the stock ota rom that virus posted in the development forum. It's the same 100% stock sprint software, with root access

I am trying to attempt [S-OFF] with Juopunutbear.
One of Juopunutbear's requirements, is that your on a completely stock rom.
Im having issues finding the lastest stock rom for the evo v 4g ( Virgin Mobiles version evo 3d) . I've searched high and low. I've came close, but it was an old ruu with an old radio.
I would like to flash a stock rom with same radio, if possible. I've checked http://www.shipped-roms.com/ , google.com and many other places.
Any one been in my situation ? Trying to achieve S-OFF with Jbears method on an Evo V 4g.
I'm tired Of sense roms.... I'm on hboot 1.7 and wish to start flashing ASOP!
Thanks in advance for the replies :good:

"One of Juopunutbear's requirements, is that your on a completely stock rom."
I unlocked with HTC Dev, installed twrp with SDK, and flashed SuperUser patch for the stock ROM.
Do I still have a stock rom or do I have to do the RUU?
