[Q] Can't boot after hard reset - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've got a Legend on stock FroYo, which has never been rooted or had a custom ROM applied. It's been slowing down, so I did a hard reset using the Settings > SD Card and Storage > Factory Reset method.
Now, when it boots up, I get this message as soon as I unlock the screen:
Code:
The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
There's the usual [Force close] button. When I hit it, I get a black screen. The volume and power buttons work, but that's it.
I've gone into Recovery mode <3e>, and it give me this message in the bottom of the screen:
Code:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I've tried the "Wipe data/factory reset" option, and that didn't improve things. Same with wiping the cache.
I've also tried the "Apply sdcard:update.zip" option, and gives me these messages:
Code:
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
So I guess I need to get a working ROM on my SD card and use that...but I haven't a clue how! Help!
BTW, I'm not a complete idiot. Although I've not really messed around with Android, I ran various custom ROMs on my old Windows phones.
If possible, I'd like to keep my phone "stock", but I'm happy to root it (etc.) -- at the moment it's just an expensive paperweight
Sorry if this has been asked before -- I've spent half an hour searching, but all the threads I could find concerned problems (and solutions) when dealing with rooted phones and/or custom ROMs.
Cheers,
Mahinda

hello, can you install the official ruu provided by htc again? i think the most up-to date one is obtainable from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497357
but you might have to use another one in case your legend is branded. also see http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Legend

Thanks!
I couldn't download the first one, as Mediafire's blocked at work, so I'm downloading a WWE version from shipped-roms.
My Legend's a replacement (under insurance after the first one got smashed), and I'm pretty sure it's unbranded. There's certainly no network lock on it.
I'm downloading HTC Sync too, as I think I need that installed on my PC...hopefully I won't need to do anything from the phone itself.
Will let you know how I get on...

So, I've managed to get it connecting to HTC Sync, which is nice.
However, when I run the RUU, it gets to the "Verifying information step" and then comes up with Error 170 -- USB Connection Error.
HTC Sync loses connection just before this happens, which seems suspicious. I've tried it on "Charge only" and "Disk drive" modes too, with no joy.
Having read up on the error, I'm now installing stuff on a cleaner PC so I can try again. It's Windows 7 though, which'll probably introduce exciting new problems
This is annoying. I'd deliberately never gone "off piste" with this phone (for the first time in years) to avoid this sort of thing.

hello, please try with htc sync version 2.0.33 and debug mode enabled in settings > applications > developement (in case you can still access it).

Downloading that now. I've tried:
HTC Sync 3.2.10
HTC Sync 2.0.25 (which was on my SD card)
RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.31.405.5_R_Radio_47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L_release_126592_signed.exe
RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_2.03.405.3_Radio_47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe
RUU_Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3_Radio_47.51.35.17_7.13.35.05_release_160328_signed.exe
All on two PCs -- one running Win XP SP3 and the other on Win 7 Pro. I get error 170 every time.
It'll be late tonight before I try anything else. Got to go home and find my HTC Diamond!
Thanks for all the help.

Oh, and one more thing. I can't access anything on my phone except the lock screen. Thankfully, the little USB debug icon comes up, so I think it must be enabled already.

Cannot upgrade or downgrade my unbranded Hero (EU)

Hi,
I really, really hope someone can help me with this: I have an unbranded europeans GSm hero on the Dutch Telfort network. I was really looking forward to the official 2.1 update, but I can't even install the preparing OTA-update (including the YouTube update). I'd be really grateful if someone can help me out!!!!!!
Firmware: 1.5
Build: 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
Software: 1.0.0.A62888
My computer: Windows 7 (64), HTC Sync and drivers installed
OTA update
About two weeks ago I received the preliminary update notification on my phone (4.6mb or somehting like that). I downloaded it and in the next window I chose to install it. The phone rebooted, but remained stuck in de HERO screen forever. I removed the battery, rebooted it, changed the date, received the OTA again, but same thing happened. Apparently, the update cannot install.
I figured it might have something to do with my current build not allowing the update, so I tried installing the original RUU from HTC. But that didnt work either: it kept saying "waiting for bootloader..." and eventually gave some USB-error message (error 171). So it seems it cannot connect to my phone. Other RUU's don't work either. Downgrading therefore seems impossible too.
Recovery image
It appeared to me that perhaps my recovery image is broken as I once unsuccessfully tried to root my Hero (Tell me, is this related? i really dont know). I used the flashrec method back then, but it didnt seem to work. Afterwards, other flashing attempts using Flashrec or abd via the terminal didnt work either.
Flashrec gave "backup failed: remote not allow" or "backup failed: image invalid" or somehting like that.Adb says "device not found" or "remote failed" or "somethign similar" Somehow I have the idea the recovery image is corrupted, but the flashrec requires you to back it up before writing the new image. As it wont backup, it doesnt allow to install the new image.
I asked HTC for help, but they were of no avail: they advised me to do a factory reset. That worked, but the problem remains and the OTA update still won't install. I e-mailed them again, but they are not very guick at replying.
Does anyone have an idea how to solve this and has anyone had similar problems? I'd really like to know. To be able to install the official 2.1 would be great, a stable custom 2.1/2.2 rom would be fine too.
Please be very clear in any steps you might describe cause some of the walkthroughs are not really clear to me.
I am even willing to give the person who is able to help me a voucher for some webshop, cause I'm getting really annoyed with my phone now.
There you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=647353
I eventually got it to work: I used a computer with winXP instead of my Windows 7 (64bit), which at least helped me install to wipe the phone, install a working RUU and eventually, the OTA update worked.
That was months ago... now I'm trying the 2.2 Sense port for my Hero and it seems to be giving less problems than the official update LOL

[Q] Partian problem?

I have been trying to add a rom to my lg optimus-t for pretty much the whole afternoon. I rooted it fine but when I tried to install AmunRa to make a recovery but that failed that was ok though since the ROM I ended up choosing asked for a different recovery system. The ROM I chose to use ciaox's openoptimus build
So I installed ROM Manager and did a recovery with clockwork mod, everything seemed fine until I loaded the clockworkMod and got E: bad boot message "recovery" I decided to continue anyways and followed the steps and when I finished part one it actually booted up, but I was unable to see any icons. All I was able to see was the lock screen and the network manager bar at the top.
There is a second part so I thought maybe if I went through all of the steps it would fix itself. It was all going great until I got to phase 2 #16 because it just wouldn't do it and the error message I got was "you cannot program the qcsbl header without the partition". in my infinite wisdom (dun dun dun) I decided to re-install everything, went to the recovery file and nothing happened, said it didn't exist. I had the rom so I decided to wipe the phone again and re-install it, now it doesn't even load and I realized I should have stopped to re-install somethings in the beginning.
Thankfully the clockworkMod recovery still boots and I have all functionality there(Well except for the recovery), so is there anyway for me to get 2.2 and install that into my phone to start all over again? A quick answer would be awesome, sorry for the novel, TIA.
Edit: got the rom up and running again, but I am back at the :"The Application settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" stage where I get the full unlock screen and the top bar that work, the emergency dialer still works as well. I tried doing phase2 again and following the instructions, but the phone goes into emergency mode and shuts off. At this point I'm thinking of trying another more simple ROM where I dont have to change the basebands, does that sound like a good idea?

[Q] Help, please! Flashed zip-killed network connection

Hello All,
(Sorry this might seem long but if you are good at rooting it's a quick read)
I could use some help. I have a rooted Eris and I have flashed a few different ROM's without a problem (New to rooting and flashing). I was recently running xtrsense and tried to flash a lockscreen called 3ring.zip. After that my network was lost. I do not have a nandroid backup (I now know why I should although I thought I did the first flash but can't find it now) and have re-flashed, wiped, factory reset numerous times with no luck. Everytime I do the phone goes through the setup but tells me that I don't have a network and to use wifi. It's not my Verizon account because I have reconnected an old phone in the meantime with no problem.I even installed a flashback zip to unroot but it doesn't work (it tells me E: No signature (1873 files) and E: Verification Failed and Installation Aborted).
I could really use someone's help.
Thanks,
CJ
Did you try re-activating the phone? Dial *228 and choose option 1.
Doing this from xtrSENSE should be fine. See if that helps.
Those error messages from flashing Flashback sound like you had an incomplete download. You also get error messages if you try to flash with a battery less than 30% (I think... it may be 25%?) but I think that the error is different.

[Q] Phone auto shut-down for install, CWM aborts, endless loop

Hello,
My device is an HTC Inspire 4G running android 2.3.5 with cwm v5.8.1.5.
I just got my phone activate on straight talk wireless and within an hour of doing so, my phone alerted me there was an update to install, and needed to reboot.
The phone shuts off and then CWM pops up and tries to install the update, only to fail and give me a signature verification error, and an aborted install.
I figured no big deal, I'll just reboot and forget about it. Only now every time my phone boots up, it runs normally for a minute and then pops up the installation dialog and automatically shuts down, only to reboot into CWM for the install to abort again. Every time, without fail.
I am at a complete loss as to what to do about this. I can't find any information even remotely related to my problem. Maybe I just don't know the right string of keywords for the search. Anyway, any help will be immensely appreciated.
Update: I was able to recover an old image and at least make the phone useable again, but it's once again notified me that At&t has an update for me. I chose to postpone it this time, but I'm still at a loss as to how to handle this. I don't want to just keep clicking to postpone the update, but I can't allow it until I figure out why CWM is aborting the install.

Nexus 9 update failure

I'm a newbie and trying to sort out my issue. I don't know all the tech jargon, so please consider that if replying.
Yesterday I okay-ed the latest update for our Nexus 9 - stock standard on Marshmallow. Got a persistent error "'Nfc stopped working" and neither the Ok nor the Report option would close the notification. I still could see the install update notice behind but couldn't access it. I tried booting in safe mode and briefly got the message the device was corrupt. When the safe mode boot was complete, the same error message still existed and I could not close the error notification.
I then tried a factory reset but now the device doesn't even get beyond the continually animated dots.
I found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/help/failed-marshmallow-update-stock-android-t3226704 and went through all the steps.
I tried to load this OTA:
6.0.1 (MMB29S) Link 59ab9d2ad432610244e54696775316cf fc7b590e6e6cbda6c1afdecfaed72a065359eeee
I verified the checksum on the download and all is good.
However, I can't get the update to load and this is what I get on screen:
Supported API: 3
Send package to device with adb sideload <filename> etc.
Finding update package
Opening update package
Verifying update package
E: Footer is wrong.
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
At top of screen is this information:
Android Recovery
google/volantis/flounder
6.0.1/MMB29S/2489379
user/release-keys
use volume up/down and power
Then the menu
I am at a loss what to do now. The Tablet was bought through Google Play Store, so I can't even take it back to where I bought it.
Thanks
Greg
Update
Just to let anyone reading this thread that I contacted Google and they are replacing the tablet.
