256MB RAM? How can we be sure?

Hi guys,
I have a serious doubt that s740 has 256MB. I think that OS only thinks that way. These are the arguments for my doubt :
1. I have an application that shows message box with question before it closes. Usually when OS notices that system is low on memory it starts to close applications. Sometimes while this application is in background, message box pops up (not because I tried to close it, OS obviously thinks it is low on memory)
2. I have never seen significantly less than 100MB of free RAM in any applications that shows that information
3. I created an application that loads some text files into a memory. I started it when my device was close to a 100MB of free RAM. Very soon I got OutOfMemoryException although I had 100MB of RAM left!!
4. Once I bought 32GB SD card from eBay. After a test I figure it out that card was 4GB although it appeared to any PC it was 32GB. I saw on the some forums that I was not the only one with that problem. Many face the same when buying SD card from eBay and China. Point of this...it is possible to alter memory controller in order to trick the system.
If there is anyone who saw in any task manager or something less than 100MB of free RAM, please report it here. Also if you know some way we can be sure that there really is 256MB of RAM on our devices please let us know.
I got less than 100MB free RAM ...
Yep, me too

Actually you don't.
On your screendump you can see clearly "0.12G" (about 120 MB) free from a totall of 0.18G

Actually, I do.
.12G is used, 61mb free, which comes to a total of .18G

Not wanting to nitpick (as the issue mentioned at the start is the question if there's really the advertised 256 MB RAM, which actually appears to be 187 MB), but you're reading the Resco System Info incorrectly.
As you can see on your screendump, your 16 GB (14.83G) storage card is almost full (red bar, 97%) with only about "0.40G" available. This is shown on the right side, just like the ".12G" or about 120 MB.
Whoops, you're right. My bad. I'd suspect that the "missing" mbs are taken up by the os itself? either way, I have yet to run into an out of memory error on this device, and i have constantly up to 5 progs running in the background...

The way OS handles automatic closing of application is rather complicated and does not depend on free memory only.

Windows Mobile 6.1 is still based on Windows CE 5 core, which allows 32MB of memory per process (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_ce#Versions). Bear in mind that you are also using .NET, which in itself is a bit memory-hungry.
All-in-all I think that device has as much memory as advertised and see no reason why it shouldn't.
BTW my s740 has an 128MB of RAM ('not for sale' version)
CPU
CPU Frequency
RAM
Program memory: OS
Program memory
Memory in use
So maybe some of the Roses can be with 128MB only
...When I used my s710 (64MB of RAM) I had a free RAM value about 10MB. Now my s740 with 128MB of RAM but free RAM value still about 10MB. Very very strange

Only 190 MB ram?

Is it normal that the T-Mobile G2 Touch only shows 190MB ram max. in apps like mini info etc? I thougt this must be 288?
Just like a computer, some of your memory is dedicated to system processes. Mine shows the same..

[Q] sms need 20Mb free

Hi,
Why does android need 20Mb free to write sms ?
When the phone has only 19.xx Mb free internal memory, there is a persisting alert saying that memory is low and you can't write any sms.
Is there a way to avoid this ?
(config : P500 - CWM - openOptimus - franko kernel)

AFAIK the android system does not interrupt with the sms writing when low on memory. I was able to send/receive sms even when my phone memory was 17 mb or something. I guess it has been programmed to throw warnings when the memory is below 20 mb. It should not interrupt your messaging IMO.
I made some tests to be sure before posting. I thought it was the same for everyone... :/
When i click on "Compose new message" it says :
"Low on space - Phone storage is full! Delete some files to free space."
Even with 19Mb free internal memory and 508Mb free SD memory
When i have more than 20Mb, the notification in the panel vanish and i can write sms normally.

Hmmm sounds interesting... I'm not sure whether we have any workaround for this. But if you want to clear out some space on your phone, try 'History Eraser' from the market. I will clear out some precious space on your phone.
And also, follow the same drill of moving apps to SD card if the apps allows it.
Don't know about your preferences but, I think you should have some 40 mb of free internal memory. Don't fill upto the neck. Use a2sd, data2sd.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
Using "handcent sms" seems to solve the problem.

Yes, but maybe there are other way to solve the problem? Maybe there are exist method to change free space quota (And notification), or patch to standart SMS-application?

[Q] Ram memory

How much free ram memory xperia mini have ?
And does it have 512mb total ram or something like 418mb ?
Story is the Xperia has 512M of RAM, but 177M or so of RAM are taken up by the O/S. Leaving something along the lines of 335M free for other apps.
I don't know why all the programs that report memory don't show the memory reserved by the O/S.
Would be interested in knowing if such an app exists.
Mike
can u post screenshot of ram memory status ? so if i'am understand u, xperia have 335mb free ram with stock rom ? thats cool

That's the theoretical amount of memory, when I run max kill, I end up with 191MB.
If you go by the utilities they show you total memory its 335mb
Mike
ok, than it have 355mb ram not 512mb is 191mb of ram enought to run hd games ?

It's truly 512MB RAM, but the operating system (Android) also occupies RAM, for example in panamamike's case, the OS uses 191MB for its running so the amount of RAM left for other programs is about 512 - 191 = 355MB RAM.
I haven't tried any HD games but you can watch these videos :

Actually, the math goes like this.
512MB total - 177MB [Hidden by Android for system] - (166-170MB) [Android O/S apps] 22MB [Kernel] approx 143MB available to the user. Max Kill, kills some of the Android O/S stuff, but it starts right back up automatically. I don't know enough to determine if I can really turn some of that stuff off, but ATM I'm just letting it go.
Also note, if we could root the phone, there are applications that SE has installed as part of the O/S that could be removed to free up more memory.
It's a bit disheartening to see such little memory truly available. I don't know what typical HD games need to run.
Mike
i don't understand, if system hide 177mb ram for system, why he(system) double use ram memory ? 1. 177mb and 2. 166-177mb(for os and apps) why ?
never mind, thast cool phone..
Most apps/games store the big files /data on yer sdcard. The app needs to have this feature implemented.

why Android virtual space crashes & how to fix it?

Does anybody know - why virtual space crashes while playing online game???* i use call of duty : mobile*| my ram is ~ 3 gb
i checked, when i normally play [without virtual] my free ram is :700+- [not accurately]
but when i play in virtual space,*my free ram is :500+- [not accurately]
i edited*LOW MEMORY KILLER*- VISIBLE APP to 0 mb, so that virtual doesnt crash... but yet, it crashes...*
i checked many popular & unpopular virtual... some crashes at loading point | some crashes at gaming period
does anybody have any theorical knowledge - how & why it happen??
ANY INFORMATION IS APPRECIATED
App's name is errleading, IMHO. Virtual Space (VS) is simply an app cloner what puts a copy of apps / games into an isolated / separated space in your device's storage memory. VS is a hacking tool.
VS can be considered as an Android emulator where you can launch apps from. VS itself eats some MBs of device's RAM ( as you noticed ~200MB ) because it's merely an app like any other Android app. COD eats ~1.5GB RAM. Thus running COD via VS takes at minimum ~1.7GB RAM.
My suggestion: Completely clear phone's recent list to ensure no apps are running in background.
BTW: Android OS ( depends on version ) takes ~500MB RAM.

As I suspected: the memory problem is homemade, you have too many apps open.
