[Q] CF-Root 5.4 XW XEN LP7: WiFi not working - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've got a German but unbranded phone and wanted to install a kernel with CWM.
The data from my original kernel showed XW LP7, so I installed the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip kernel from here.
Installation went fine, system booted and was usable afterwards. Root works, CWM too. But WiFi does not work. It always tries to get an IP, aborts, reconnects, but never connects successfully.
When I flash the original kernel again, Wifi works instantly. The original kernel can be downloaded here:
http://www.usp-forum.de/samsung-gal...samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-original-kernels.html
It is the "XWLP7 Original Germany" one, no XEN, O2 or E+.
Attached are the version details of the working kernel.
How can I modify my working kernel to include CWM? I want to be able to flash different roms and make full backups without hassle.
Thanks.

How can I modify my working kernel to include CWM?
Will require you to learn how to build a kernel if you require to do it yourself how to is posted in development .
As per the post you flashed CWM and root from try another version or LP9 .
Other rooting methods are posted .
LP7 working for many users including myself .

[Q] [Resolved] Are kernels backward-compatible?

hi all!
Here s the story:
I went to flash VR 2.3 yesterday, which welcomed me with a blank screen at boot. Tried another rom, got same result.
A little scare and backup restore later, i was back on track and understood that those roms are KG3 based and a new kernel was not "recommanded" but NECESSARY
So, my question is this: if I update to KG3 Kernel, can I still run other stuff? If not, is it OK to flash an older kernel just for another older base rom?
Thanks!
EDIT:
[A]: Yes
Yes and no.
The actual kernel code itself has close to 0 changes from FW version to version.
(Though, there HAVE been some changes from 2.3.3 based ones to 2.3.4 ones).
Usually a 2.3.3 kernel works on most (if not all) 2.3.3 based FWs and same goes for 2.3.4.
However, there is more in the zImage than just the bare kernel code, there is the initial ram disk that takes care of booting up the OS.
Some ROMs depend on certain things to be or not to be in there (usually goes for custom kernels).
But there is really no problem just flashing a matching kernel for ROM/FW you're going to install.
Thanks a lot!
I just went ahead anyhow, and flashed KG3, then just let the phone reboot in VR 2.1 (which is KF2, I believe). it booted just fine, so I guess it might be, as you say, on a case by case basis.
I ll talk with VR dev so that he can edit the install instructions, which are a little misleading since he states this step is optional
Thanks for getting back to me!

[Q] Phone stuck on Galaxy logo !!

I recently installed WanamLite V7.7 XXLP6 Android 4.0.3 Final LP6 on my phone, but the signal was awful, so i tried to install [KERNEL] SpeedMod SGS2 [K2-20 CWM5 CIFS ROOT], hoping that it would fix my problems with the signal.
After that, the phone is permanetly stuck on the Samsung logo and won't go any further. I tried to re-flash the ROM but the problem is still there.
After that I've tried to fix the problem by following instructions on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499, but still nothing.
Can someone please help me to fix this problem?
Thanks for your time
I think that you need to do a restore or to flash a gingerbread rom before the ics one... Speedmod is not for ics roms...
Sent from my Galaxy S II powered by CheckROM
You said you followed pulsar's "boot loop" thread... so does that mean you cleared cache, wiped data, factory reset, all that?
Also, a future FYI. Kernels will never address your problems with phone signal. Flashing modems will, but kernels, never.
However, they might affect wi-fi signal, as some kernels have wi-fi drivers included.
Thanks for your responses. I';ve managed to fix my problem by flashing a gingerbread rom. After that i had major signal issues. I've flashed the main modem for my S2 (ki4) but i'm still facing the same issues. Any ideas how to fix the signal problem?

Or have just not a clue what they installed .
Backup data first if phone is working .

Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .

Try different modems until you find one that works well for you. That's what I and many other people on here have done. This is one thread with CW flashable modems (there are others, search), there are other threads on here (search) with Odin flashable modems if you prefer to use that.
i tried many... right now i'm using XLP6 which shows -93dBm but still when i'm on the phone, 90% the connection is lost and the phone hangs up
I've found that how well a modem works for you depends on where you live and service provider. For me, in Germany on T-mobile I've found XXKI3 to have the best results (with CM7)
I would be trying the modem that came with the phone .
jje
im also running wanamlite 7.7 but with the LP6 kernel...and indeed the kernel has nothing to do with signal levels
i did change the modem to XXKPA and the battery, signal has improved a lot so im sticking with it, my phone originally came with KK1 which kinda sucked even with stock rom
so follow the link they gave you and try the modem untill you find one that suits your needs
by the way, before flashing stuff you should read what is made for what rom so you can avoid bricks/bootloops

[Q] Please help!!!

I would like some advice because I 've heard too many different oppinions and I'm confused...
To begin my original baseband is XXLPQ. I was told to put a kernel with LPQ to root my phone... so I did! Then I put resurrection v 1.0 which was based in LPQ also and everything was Ok except battery. So I read about siyah and I install it but for some reason the phone couldn't open so normally I could choose ether install my previous kernel or install the hole rom to be sure. But as I saw the new version of resurrection 1.1 I said why not.. (although, 1.1 is based on LPE and I asked if there is any problem that I'm in LPQ and they told me there no problem..) So I did. I put siyah(v3) too and there all should be stable and perfect... but of course in my case there are not. Programs not responding all the time, battery suchs but I guess it's too early to say and generaly it crashes... So my question is: is there any case that instabillity caused by diferent basebands??? If not why am I having this??? With a reinstall of the new rom(v 1.1) would it be any difference???(and all programms too ... but manually, not by restore) Or should I put the previous rom?

Phone came with ICS firmware ???

Baseband is wrong re kernel
Its supposed to be tied to your firmware PDA version not the baseband

No basebands are modems
If not why am I having this???
Sounds like multiple flashing this that and the other syndrome .
Suggest wipe the lot and start at the beginning and read the instructions faqs and guides .

hi
Every installation of a ROM you should always do a full wipe to be sure it is clean to receive a new one. And also when you want to change kernels you need a cleaning script for that. You can search for it here at xda.
Thanks gyus think I got it!!
JJEgan yes it was with ICS firmware..
When I was saying baseband I meant PDA... its the same letters and in phone information written as baseband but found the PDA too and its the same... \Now I know that this is just the rom... anyway thank you!!!

[Q] Problems after flashing my phone. Help!

I have a bell Galaxy S2. Today I rooted it and after hours of confusion, I finally managed to install resurrection remix 4.04 ICS on my phone.
So far I've run into tons of issues:
1) No GPS
2) No wifi (stuck on 'obtaining IP address, unlikely that this is my network's fault)
3) No software buttons, so I can't multitask (have to use task killer to kill unused apps right now)
4) Rom Control crashes everytime I go into the Navigation bar page
The phone in it's current state is useable, but I will go back to stock settings if I can't fix these problems. Maybe there is a better ROM out there? Though I heard resurrection remix is the best one. Also, could it be that I installed the wrong kernel? The one I installed is:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5
Can somebody help me out? Any tips would be appreciated.
EDIT: I just realized that USB connectivity (file transfer) doesn't work either - not even in clockwork menu!

Sounds like you might have flashed the wrong kernel for your phone.
did you first check what was the original kernel on your phone? acutally, run me through your root process so i can figure where you went wrong, because the Resurrection remix rom is just about perfect
I know it was KG2 kernel originally. Don't remember the other numbers.
I'm now on a different kernel because when I used KG2, the phone wouldn't work at all (the buttons were screwy).
The process went something like this:
1. Rooted KG2 kernel installed
>Phone still works like before, but rooted
2. Put Res remix rom on my phone's storage
3. Go into clockwork recovery
4. Flash/Recovery
Format /system
Wipe Cache
5. Install ROM from SD card - twice (since the video I was watching told me to do it twice)
>Phone turns on but the buttons don't work so I can't navigate menus
6. Install CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5
>Buttons sort of work now but lots of problems
>All of my old files/music are still on the phone despite all that format/recovery stuff. Is that normal?
Now when I try to install KG2 kernel phone doesn't even turn on. If it helps, the phone currently tells me the baseband is I9100MUGKG2
k, yep you missed the gapps install. did you make a backup in CMW recovery before you flashed remix?

Nope. But if I understand correctly gapps is just the google stuff (maps, gmail, etc) but that all works fine for me.

whats wrong with you brother? installing CF-root on an AOKP rom???? CF-root is matched with the Kernel not with the Baseband.
Yourself dont know what is being flased on what.....did you make sure of your model before flashing there are many S2s I9100 /I9100G / I9100M / 9100T many more...
please read all the instrction first before attempting anything my friend...There is no substitute for reading and learning for comprehension .it is not like that any thing can be applied on anything.
I have a bell s2 and i did this
Google: how to root galaxy s2 kg2. Use the one that comes up. Will show the right cf root.tar to flash through odin
Follow these steps to the T

It's the I9100M (bell) and the Kernel before I started was KG2. I already mentioned this.
@kilometers4 that's the exact kernel I tried the first time (from that tutorial) but it didn't work.

Ok, some good news.
I installed the CF-ROOT KG2 kernel.
I went into recovery, formatted/wiped everything that needs to be done. (Then USB connectivity began to work!) so I put a 2.3 Cyanogen Mod on there and now everything seems to work (USB, WIFI) except for the home button. I still can't exit out of applications.

I dont understand what are you doing, it is your phone and up to you...do any experiments you want...
but dont ask for support when you get into deep treble with your stupidity doing without reading and knowing.
CF-root will not work with AOKP roms.

Yes but I can't find any other rooted kernels out there that will work for my phone. I've googled it but all the GS2 rood/mod tutorials I've seen use CF-Root.
If you can let me know what kernel or rom to install that would be great. I'm not going to touch my phone until I figure out what to do.

Why not start with a working phone + a nandroid backup before you start playing with roms .
Stock rom + CWM and root kernel = Nandroid backup .
If CM does not work then read the CM thread faqs and instructions .

first of all get into reserection remix thread and ask whether this ROM supported for I9100M or not, if yes ask somebody can provide CWM flashable CM9 kernel (if it is the original kernel of your rom) then flash from CWM and try..

[Q] Will a stock EUR ROM work on Australian S2?

I've read several threads in xda about a Galaxy S2 from Australia working in Europe and vice versa however I haven't seen any mention of whether a stock firmware for the S2 designed for Europe will work on my Australian Galaxy S2.
Can someone clarify that for me please? I don't want to go flashing European firmware and finding GPS, FM Radio etc don't work, can't make phone calls and texts.
cheers
Of course. The only thing you might have to muck around with is the modem.

Unfortunately that's not something I'm comfortable doing. Flashing kernels and ROMs I have done but never a modem. Maybe I just better stay with what I have and do without the multi-window function that comes with that ROM.
Same as flashing roms/kernels, single file, phone section of Odin. Most modem packages on here are CWM flashable which means you need root, though if you dig around you might be able to find Odin flashable modems. You can also download stock roms for your carrier & extract the modem.bin files from those & flash with Odin (rationale being you'd expect modems bundled with stock roms released by your carrier to give you good connectivity on their network in most locations most of the time).
Besides, this assumes you have connectivity issues with the modem that's bundled with the European rom you flash. It might work just fine. You're only going to know if you flash the rom & test/find out.
I currently have the stock rom for Australia XWLSH (unbranded) on my phone. It's rooted using PhilZ kernel. I've very happy with it as it is but would like the multi-window function while still staying with a totally stock ROM. The only way to do that is to use a stock deodexed ROM and the only one of those around here is the XXLSJ which is a european stock S2 ROM.
I can easily extract the modem.bin file from my backup image I got from sammobile but I was hoping I might be able to just flash the XXLSJ deodexed ROM and all would be fine (It is prerooted with PhilZ kernel).
from the little I have read about modem flashing so far suggests i might have to also flash a matching ril which further complicates things.
My USB port works fine, connects to my PC fine, i just prefer flashing to using Odin from my PC.
I wouldn't do anything with RIL's except as a last resort; I.E your connectivity is ****e/non-existent & you've tried the several dozen different modems that are available to no effect. Forget about RIL's until/unless you get to this point (highly unlikely).
If you're planning to run the European stock rom rooted, forget about flashing modems with Odin, every modem that's ever been released is available in a CWM flashable. Quicker/easier than Odin flashing them if you have to try a bunch because your connectivity is borked.
But...And I've already said this, you might find your connectivity is just fine as is after you flash that other stock rom. So try it & see.

Good point and no doubt I can always go back to the nandroid backup of my working stock australian ROM if it doesn't.
Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.
