Just ordered a Rezound did I make a good choice? - HTC Rezound

So I found what I think to be an amazing deal on a used mint condition Rezound on ebay. I've been waiting endlessly for the Incredible 4G but 2 things happened recently that has thrown a wrench in my plans, Verizon trying to do away with the grandfathered unlimited data users like me and my Incredible 2 has decided to take a huge crap. My contract is up but I'm afraid to renew it till they give us more information on the whole deal, that and I don't wanna waste my upgrade till a really awesome phone comes out. I do hope the Rezound is as good as all the reviews I've seen about it. I have been drooling over it ever since it came out back in Nov but it's over 6 months old now. What do you guys think? Also I don't know if I will root it or not. Thanks

probably too late to worry about it now...

Nope! We all hate our phones. Very bad choice.

True! Just seeing what people who already have it think about the phone since I've never got to mess with one. Although I can get a refund if I decide I don't want it.

It's an awesome phone. I think it will be the best you can get on Verizon for a while longer still. Why wouldn't you root it? If you bought it off Ebay, you shouldn't have any warranty issue to worry about. You might want to wait till after the official ota to ics though...

I do like rooting, it's fun just to do it but I probably try 50 different roms till I find one I like that's stable

Isn't flashing 50 roms half the fun of getting a new phone?

Not entirely, I just flash what I feel is stable, yet featured packed.
Part of the reason I'm waiting patiently for CM9.

Lol cm9. Like the second apocalyptic coming ; Your supposed to believe it , never ask for ETA, and be on your best behavior at all times .
Lesson learned... Don't buy a phone for possibility of development .
If it sucks with stock , then your sol if your developers up and leave.
Ask not what your developer can do for you, ask what you can do for your developer.

I've always told people that a phone is only as good as it is stock, I forgot my own words because I needed a new phone and Rezound was best choice and I banked on development being like previous HTC phones, I'm not asking for ETAs, etc. I've been here long enough to know this. I took a chance and so far so good.

You made a really good choice sir. HTC Rezound is one of the best VZW phones. I love the true HD LCD, once you take a look at this screen you won't want to go back to anything alse. Very speedy with the 1.5 dual core processor you can fly through your apps.

It is a great phone stock and is even better with some ROMs and work

Fantastic choice. For all intensive purposes, this should have been called the Droid Incredible 3. I just upgraded 2 weeks ago ish.
I would go for root. It's an easy one to do, but if your used to clockwork, go Amon Ra on this one. Haven't tried clockwork, but i heard it has many problems. MIght I also suggest clean rom 1.7 if your going gingerbread? and SirGatez's tethering fix of course!

I just got one today, and Im wondering the same thing!

Definately can't go wrong with the Rezound. Especially if you got a good deal on it. Also rooting & S-off have made this phone very enjoyable. Plus this is one of the better communities that I've ever been a part of. I hope you enjoy your Rezound as much as I enjoy mine.

Have had this phone for one month, usually root and flash custom rom right away. This phone works so good right out of the box, very fast, best screen, everything just works. This phone has the strongest signal and best radios of all Verizon phones IMO. Great Phone.

I have an Incredible, thinking of trying out Fascinate with Community ROM

Has anyone made this switch? I currently have a stock HTC Incredible. I had custom ROMs on it but went back to stock and stayed there. I love the Fascinate hardware just not the stock software. I was thinking of picking one up and flashing the new Community ROM. How does the Community ROM compare to stock Sense on the Incredible? (if anyone has made the switch themselves)
-I need it to work with an Exchange email account
-Google Navigation/GPS to work flawlessly
Should I just stick with the Incredible? Or would the Community ROM work for me?
Over all the experience will be simpler and less cluttered without sense. My phone is super fast and smooth with the comrom. My gps works great. The only problem for you will be the lack of htc sync. Other than that everything will be an improvement especially the screen.

I just made the same switch a few weeks ago. The 2 things I miss about the dinc are CM7 nightlies and the ease of flashing (no odin, recovery/radio confusion, etc). I'm loving the superior processor, gpu, and screen on the fascinate. I'd say go for it. Get a case though. This thing is a wet bar of soap.

Thanks guys. The worst thing that would happen is I don't like it and just go back to the Incredible. So does the community ROM work well with exchange accounts?

My vote would be to stick with your INC and go to cyanogenmod 7. Its a great rom.
Then get one of the next-gen phones launching at year's end with 4G.

I actually was on CM7 for a bit but prefer stock Sense over it. I just really want a 4 inch screen and that Super AMOLED. But I will probably just tough it out. I want a new phone but don't want to waste the upgrade on the Incredible 2. I've had my Incredible a year now, that's too long

A very smart move indeed. The fascinate is quite impressive but in my opinion is past its prime with the way technology is moving. We are on the event horizon of the SGSII and the Droid Charge is a small step up from our phone.
Hold out till we hear news of the iteration of the SGSII Verizon will be getting before you make a choice. If we get the actual SGSII I will be jumping ship for it just for the support and hardware.

Yeah, I always intended to get the SGS2 but who knows if/when that will be here especially for Verizon. Just wanted something to tide me over. Even though the Incredible is a great phone I get bored of my phones so quickly.
Hopefully the SGS2 comes by September but I won't hold my breath.
I made the switch a week ago, though I still have my incredible in case I want to go back. The main reason I bought the fascinate was for the super amoled 4 inch screen and it just officially got 2.2. Very nice phone and it was kind of cool learning the rooting process all over again. Its definitely not as easy as the incredible, especially since I can't use rom manager with it but its not like its that bad. I am a rom whore though so that much I do miss about the incredible.I'm basically jumping back and forth from community and evil roms. I use different kernels and undervolting to occupy my time.
I got mine for 200 on craigslist in perfect condition with a case and screen protectors. I wouldn't pay more since it seems it will soon be fazed out like the inc and the development isn't as strong as htc, though I wish it was. I don't mean that as the devs are bad, just not as many. The fascinate seems to have absorbed alt of the great devs from the eris.
As far as those things you need working, I don't use them so i can't help you there. sorry.

Root or NO Root

What are the real chances of getting root on our 3vo's before the end of the 30 days... or ever?
I know the developers are totally awesome - but after all this time I think they should know if it's going to be possible or not.
Am I wrong?
Any comments agrabren, Zone23, RVDigital, Leoisright,xHausx?
Like, will it happen by an accidental breakthrough?
Any Voters?
We'll get it, just not in the 30-day return window.

I am 100% confident this phone will be s-off, eventually.
100% of that confidence is in the talent of the geniuses here, 0% in HTC making good on their word. Sure, HTC will do something I just wonder if it will be this year, next year.. maybe 2013.. Not holding my breath on that.

Agreed. Root isn't gonna come through the traditional approaches, because this phone is designed differently than the phones that came before it, so we're gonna have to change our way of thinking and methods of attack, but no system is bulletproof, especially a new (i.e., unproven) system.

If no systems are bullet proof, that means that every Android phone that has been released with an encrypted bootloader has been cracked? I was under the impression that phones that have been out for over a year now like the Droid X, have yet to be completely unlocked. Perhaps I'm wrong.
highly unlikely that HTC will release unlocked bootloader in the 30 day time period.
I think our devs can do it in under 30 days, but we'll have to wait and see. Of all the HTC phones, I think we have the best group of devs. I'm sure they'll get it done. Just don't know how long it will take. Maybe 20 days, maybe 45, who knows?
I think the rumor of a 2.3.4 update coming soon carrying an unlocked bootloader is just that, a rumor (both that it's coming soon, and that it will carry an unlocked bootloader). I hope to be proven wrong x 2, but I'm not going to lose sleep waiting up...
It took a long time on the EVO Shift, so I will not ever give up hope.

I think HTC will unlock the phone, as will our devs (probably first). Brought back the E3D due to a slew of tiny problems and the radios sucking hard. But i wasn't going to wait around. I went back to my E4G, but had the itch to get a new phone. So I traded in the E4G for the NS4G. It has radios slightly better than the E3D and if I get "stuck" with it I know I won't be locked into stock experience...and this thing kicks the E4G's ass...OC'd to 1.4gHz it rates as twice as fast as a stock E4G...
So if the E3D is unlocked in 30 days or the SGS2 is released I'll get one of them, if not i got the best buy buy-back program on my side....I always figured it was a ripoff but you get 50% of your original purchase price in 6 months--when the NexusPrime will be coming out...so that's $350 trade up value. A small price to pay.
Also the battery life on the NS4G is effing fantastic. slaughters both the E3D and E4G--even modded to the gills.
So, in summation, I feel confidant that I'll be rocking an E3D again in the next 30 days...or SGS2....but I'll certainly have a Nprime (1280x720 cellphone!??), and that thing won't have concerns for 'will it be cracked?'

I've been pondering doing the same thing. Never have to friggen worry about a nexus being locked down. I'm starting to think that if I want to mod my phone and flash roms and kernels, then maybe it would be beneficial for me to just stick to the nexus line. If half the rumors of the nexus prime are true, then that damn thing may be worth waiting for. Htc has left a sour taste in my mouth by locking this thing down so tight. Not even worth the bs, if modding your phone is what you're interested in.

Yup. That's what hooked me, and even though this phone has near 'feature parity' with th E4G it replaced it is _so_ much more refined. It is the Android experience that Google sees as "standard" for this generation of phones. Even with the bull**** stock launcher on a stock rom everything is so effing smooth. _Everything_, I have never seen Android run so lag free and I have my E4G oc'd to 1190, tried every kernel, locked home app in memory, tweaked every setting everywhere...Yes, it's even smoother than the E3D...even with the same launcher...It is Google's absolute definition of what this generation of Android should look and feel like. Oh, and the camera destroys E4G and E3D...sure, no 720p video, but, the WVGA video is perfectly smooth and the audio isn't sickening like the 4G...and while a bit grainy it stays just as smooth in lower light conditions.
I know, it doesn't make sense...512mb ram, 1ghz...slightly better than average GPU....but...damn....and the battery life is fantastic. Also, sAMOLED might not be accurate color, but it's dead sexy color. Getting s-off took one command over ADB. I had CM7 up in under 10 minutes...including download time.
I'm a very happy camper...I think I'm going to stick to my plan and keep this until Nprime comes along, trade this in and keep on sticking with the Nexus line. Unless the E3D is unlocked in the next 30 days in which case I'll grab that and use that to trade up to the Nprime.

Yeah but hacking on the PS3 didn't start with him. He can say what he wants about how easy it was, but people had been trying since it's release with no success. Granted he found the way, but last time I checked, he wasn't a member of TeamWin or any other Android affiliated group.

Is this phone worth upgrading from the TBolt?

Hi all, just need a few opinions from some people, and who better to ask than Rezound owners themselves? Currently I have my TBolt and I love it except a few things are starting to go bad with it. The haptic feedback is starting to go out, it doesn't always vibrate when I'm getting a call or text even though I know for a fact I have it set on vibrate and the back lights on the capacitive buttons are starting not to work all the time. It's just starting to get a little annoying. So I was thinking of either getting a replacement TBolt or possibly upgrading to the Rezound. I wanted to know if this phone was worth getting or if I should just stick with this TBolt til the next gen Verizon HTC phone came out. Thanks
coming from both a tbolt and a dinc2 id say yes, it's worth the upgrade.
Came from inc2, get it and you won't be able to put it down
I'm living on a yellow submarine
No I hate it!! It has too good of a screen and too good of signal strength.
Coming from the incredible, it's a substantial upgrade. I'd say try to get a rezound as a replacement to the thunderbolt. Maybe make a big deal about it. If not, I'd personally say to wait until a One X variant comes to Verizon.
I came from the evo4G and my wife has a tbolt this phone smokes both of them love it so much I would say wait for the HTC one but sources say it won't be on.Verizon just sprint and att. But you won't regret getting this phone

I came from the tbolt, complained over and over, and after going through 5 tbolts they said I was worthy of switching devices. Asked and received the rezound. Substantial improvement. Even with mostly just sense based roms available, the difference is dramatic. I'd definitely say upgrade to the rez!

Yes. But don't blame us if something better comes out the day after you upgrade.
I mean, the decision is ultimately up to you.
Rezound upgrade
I had a Thunderbolt and now am using a Rezound. I absolutely love this phone. I am also happy with ICS and appreciate all the devs hard work.
Let's just say I was waiting in anticipation for this phone when this was still called the Vigor!
I had the Thunderbolt. Bought the Rezound and never looked back. Alot more memory.
On the leaked stock ICS RUU and loving it.
The screen on the rezound is amazing and the batt life is decent, but there's no S-off and there's really not a lot of dev work going on for this phone. Only a couple of roms to choose from. Depends on what you're really looking for. Stock phone with a great display, then absolutely its worth the upgrade. If you like doing lots of flashing and a wide selection of roms, then absolutely not.

What's limiting us is the inability to gain S-Off, either way I prefer smaller groups of custom roms available versus nearly every dev working on the device. It can potentially make a huge jumble of a mess. I think the rom that came pre-flashed on it is actually very good, so why try to fix what's not broken.

the more devs the better. i know some are comfortable with what we have and im not bashing but if we had more devs im sure s-off and aosp would probably be here already. the rezound is still a good device non the less.
I find it awkward that people say they like the feel of the extendable battery. I thought that was one of the reasons people went HTC over Samsung because of the perceived build quality. None of my Samsung phones have ever creaked as bad as this phone does with the extended battery put on. Makes it feel even worse than my old MT3G.

[Welcome] Incredible -> Droid X2 Transition

Hi. I'm not sure if this is appropriate, but what the heck. I've owned an HTC Incredible for almost 24 months and this past Saturday I dropped it glass first onto the concrete. Needless to say, I have an x2 UPS should be dropping off at my house today. I'm looking forward to the larger screen and dual core CPU.
After browsing the developer forums, I am disappointed how little ROM selection there is. I read this is because Motorola locks down their system. I had the choice of an Incredible 2 or this. I chose this, so I hope I won't be disappointed.
About me: I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, so I hope to help test out ROMs as much as possible after I root. Which shouldn't take too long to talk myself into it . I'm more of a lurker than a poster. That's all for now.

Welcome. Since you are coming from an HTC phone, you may get a little frustrated with how much you cant do on a Motorola phone. BUT, we do have awesome developers who make awesome ROMs for our phones. I suggest Eclipse or CM7. And I would forget how you used a rooted HTC and learn from scratch with your DX2. For instance, if you have used ROM manager or anything similar, don't use it with your DX2. A lot of people mess up there phones with that. We dont use ClockworkMod Recovery, but an alternative called Bootstrap Recovery. Since our phones are locked down, we have to be tethered to a wall charger to use this. No flashing on the go for us. And ICS is a ways away from getting onto our phones. Just a few things we have to deal with. Its still a nice phone.

Though stuff is bleak now and people like me recently moved to other phones like the nexus or dinc2 or resound, still dragonzkiller is working on CM9 and that should immensely help this device. Right now 2 of the best ROMs are CM7 and eclipse, which is a huge complement to eclipse as it is based on blur....
Oh crap, btw pray to god that your phone does NOT have 2.3.5 OTA on it. If so, you cannot root it. Yet.

With it being more difficult to flash, maybe I'll have a more operable phone lol. On a more serious note, after reading that HTC is releasing ICS for the Incredible 2 I am somewhat disappointed for not choosing it. I'm happy to try a Motorola phone again thought and will enjoy the 0.3" larger screen, my main reason for talking insurance into giving me this phone. Anyways, thanks for the information, it will come in handy on down the road.
Sad to hear there's only 2 main ROMs people use. I'm crossing my fingers for having 2.3.4 .
It probably will have 235 http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x2-hacks/205470-bummer-full-2-3-5-1-3-418-root-broken.html

That sucks. Damn Motorola.
Welcome to the X2 commnuity
To be brutally honest, I believe the incredible 2 has a much higher satisfaction rate compared to the X2. *cough cough* that's why I was going to get the Inc2 until I saw Rezound at a reasonable price
But as said, there are some developers that make X2 quaint =)
I SWEAR TO GOD if the ota breaks root I'm leaving this crap phone.... omg I'm effn pissed!!! Hopefully there was a mistake somewhere... read the link above guys.. and be ready to scream at someone.

I thought someone in this thread said it but I guess not. I read someone saying Eclipse is modified to block OTA updates. Thats a relief on my part since thats what I'm using.

As far as I know/remember, all ROMs block OTAs. CM7 does too...

The Incredible 2 didn't even pop in my mind to be honest.
My phone has 2.3.4, let the fun begin . The phone seems pretty quick so far, except when unlocking. Does the snappiness end over time like I've heard?
I've had both, dinc2 is far better.
no offense to dx2 devs though. Dzk, nitro and company are the best.

I hate to hear that. How were you able to trade up to an Inc2?

Yes. Yes, it does end. Anyway, the good news is you are on 2.3.4 and thereby been spared by the tyranny of Moto, but by just. Your best bet is CM7/Eclipse and soon CM9... Just don't ask for ETAs, else you'll suffer the wrath of the Dragon!
And don't dare update to 2.3.5. In fact, just root that damn thing and install CM7/Eclipse to avoid being nagged by the phone to update, when the damned update does arrive.. Enjoy (I can't say that with a straight face, sigh) your device as much as possible. And I hope I and others didn't rain on your parade too much. Have fun with the X2...

Here is how I did it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586153. This other forum was what led up to it.
If you have bloat freezer or titanium back up you can stop the ota update.

If by rain on my parade you mean make me regret getting this phone... . I do enjoy the slightly larger screen and resolution so that's trade off enough for me. But if it does end up like the post you linked, dinc2 here I come.
After not even having the phone activated for 24 hours I'm having trouble. It's the infamous sdcard music playback skipping I've read about . This happens intermittently, sometimes few skips sometimes many. Called Asurion, they told me to take the battery out and hold power down for 15 seconds. We'll see how it does at work tomorrow.
Edit: This happens with the phone idol running PowerAMP with music from 128 KBPS all the way to 2580KBPS. It gets worse downloading updates on 3G.
Youll never completely get rid of that, and its not the sdcard it dies it on internal as well, im looking into new samsung phones, done with motorola soon as I find what i want. Without nitro, dkz, and the rest of our gang i would have been gone months ago. But cm7 and eclipse are both amazing compared to what this was out of the box
from my X2 roaming the north
If you go into power amp setings and find the buffering option and select the largest one it may help the skipping. I came from the original droidx and i was expecting a better phone but turned out to be worse. I am just glad that we have any devs working on this phone! they have done alot for it.

So long Rezound folks, and thanks for all the fish

On the downside, I still haven't figured it out how to prevent my Rezound from burning like a redhead in a bikini at the beach. On the upside, Verizon was very nice to me and gave me an upgrade a year early, so I ordered the GSIII. So long sunburnt redhead, hello tall, blond, companion with large parts made of plastic!
Everyone in the forums has been super awesome, and I love all you devs who've made my Rezound experience tolerable! I get to keep my Rezound, so I'll still be around to check in and see what comes down the pipe, and if I can finally get decent battery life (so I can either give it to my sister or sell it).

Nobody important at all. Not a dev. Just a user who is appreciate of XDA and its members.
ETA: Also, that was kind of unnecessarily aggressive.
Sorry, I just wasn't sure if I recognized you or if you were just a lurker. Plenty of users have "wolf" in their usernames and it's kind of easy to lose track.
So uh... no hard feelings, I guess.
Hm, on-topic contributing discussion to this thread... how easy would you say it was to deal with Verizon on having a burning Rezound then? Verizon was voted amongst a top 5 worst customer service companies I saw a few weeks ago and thought they didn't really deserve a place there.

No hard feelings at all.
As for your question, actually, I've had nothing but pleasant customer service interactions with them. I've been through 4 or 5 replacement Rezounds, each time they were helpful and quickly sent me a new one. The last two times I asked for a different phone, but they would only exchange it for a Razr or something equally bad. This time I managed to convince them to let me upgrade early. My general rule with Verizon customer service is that if at first you dont succeed, try try try again. Often it just takes getting to the right supervisor who will approve it. I've gotten early upgrades several times (recurring GPS issues with my Droid 2 and X led to an early upgarde to my Rezound). This is my phone history:
Droid 1 => Droid 2 (they were supposed to replace the Droid 1, didnt have any in stock, so I got a Droid 2) => Droid X (recurring GPS problems on Droid 2 so they switch my warranty replacement to an X) => Droid X2 (regular upgrade) => Droid X (X2 was so bad I sold it [for $550]) => Rezound (Droid X had same recurring GPS issues as Droid 2, they gave me early upgrade) => GS3 (all sorts of issues, from overheating to loose screens to non functioning touchscreen [depending on the return])
Good luck OP! I'm sad to see a reasonable person leave the Rez crowd. I just bought one off a fella techie chick from out of state. Came with lotsa goodies too.
My VZ cust service has been good for the most part. It only took me 2 phone calls late last year to be given Unlimited Data with Unlim Hotspot packages on both my Thunderbolt phones at the time.
See ya around!

My actual first name is a translation of wolf. Hence the username. I come by it honestly . And Gray, you may not know who I am, because I only posted occasionally, but I know you and your work as a Dev has been awesome, so thanks!
I'm going to check back in here from time to time to see if I can get my Rezound up to sellable status. Who knows? My sunburt redhead may eventually learn how to use sunblock (I'm really stretching this metaphor aren't I?)
It took me forever but I think I just realized.. "so long and thanks for all the fish" That's a line from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy correct?

Indeed it is! It is both a line from the first book as well as the title of the fourth book.
I have recently ditched the Rezound also, I was getting tired of the shoddy build quality of it and the poor battery life, so I decided to get a used Galaxy Nexus off of ebay for about $200 since I was considering getting one before I get the Rezound anyway. It took me a little while to get used to it at first because a fair amount of things are a lot different (such as OCing and the screen calibration) but all in all its a good phone. I have pretty much everything settled with it (running Friday's CM10 nightly with Franco's kernel clocked at 1.8 GHz), but I do miss the beautiful screen on the Rezound yet I don't miss how it annihilated my battery. I may keep my Rezound for a little while just to see how the JB build come along but in the end I'm probably going to sell it to help pay for the Gnex.
Keep up the great work guys, I'll probably see you around these parts.
