When you download a google play movie. What directory are they downloaded in. I want to try to put it on sd card after that point for more space when offline. Ok I finally figured out where it is stored. So I temp unrooted my phone made purchase and then selected download for offline viewing. So in the directory there is a file
application_4jSa8szMNjs.wvm
so i brought my root back to get into that directory then where i was stumped i figured it would be wmv mp4 3gp or whatever with drm protection but no its wvm I have never heard of wvm. so anyways I moved the wvm file to a different directly. Now my question is does anyone here know anything about a .wvm file ?
So...what directory did you actually find the file in?

found it!
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/<random characters>/<video file>.wvm

Im messing around with this right now. Do you have to be rooted to pull out the complete file? Im using AirDroid and I can see the file and im attempting DL now. I am not rooted. When I used android file transfer on my MBA i couldnt see the same file. Im hoping AirDroid allows you to pull the file and play it normally. Ill update after its finished DLing.
Quick question, what would happen if I pulled a wvm file from my device and put it on some one else's device? Would it work?
Thanks!
Super useful info! Thanks!

YES! I copied the file from my Galaxy Note 3 (rooted) to my computer, renamed it and changed the file extension from .WVM to .AVI (no conversion needed whatsoever) and it plays using VLC on my Mac. I then loaded the video onto my Husband's iPhone 5 to the VLC folder and it plays perfectly as well!

Hello MrRageMan299,
Did you just try and change the file extension from .WMV to .AVI? Worked for me....
I also just tried and changed the extension from .WMV to .mp4 and it plays using the stock Samsung Video Player as well as Dolphin jetpack / browser and QuickPic app in the Play Store--> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&hl=en
No conversion down whatsoever....
I know this thread is old but do the movies still expire after changing the file extension?
How will rented movies affect this?
Will the movie still be transferable if it is rented?

If you can share the file I can take a look at it and tell you what might be going on. MP4 files USUALLY container AAC audio, but not always. There are a few esoteric audio types that can reside in an MP4 container that may not play with the stock player.
You can also try an alternative player, like Rockplayer for instance....
I dunno how to Share the file
I'll try the player you mentioned

MP4 wont play from SD card
Ever since i rooted my Samsung Vibrant T959, I am unable to play MP4 video files from the SD card. If I move the file to the internal storage it plays just fine. I have a 32gb SD card and would rather save the phone memory for my APPS. Any suggestions? I have tried the original root (android 2.1) not sure what the official name for it is, CM7, and currently I am running Bionix v.1.3.1. I have tried multiple MP4 files. I backed up my entire DVD library so i have multiple MP4 to choose from. I have tried about 15 different movies so far. The only videos i can play now are certain AVI files. Is there anything i can do? I have tried RockPlayer, MoboPlayer, Tried to Drag and Drop, and I have tried to use Double Twist. Files will show up in my browser, but when i select them it says unsupported file type.
MX player. If MX doesn't work for you then you phone is having issues with such a large exsd.
thank you for getting back to me... I just tried to download MX Player and it does not give me the unsupported file type message, but now it just says unable to play file. I have a 16gb card i got with my HTC HD2 (also rooted and running android) that is just floating around my house somewhere, i may try to put that card in my vibrant and see if I get any better results. Thank you again though.

That is why Tegra 2 and tablets without sd slot - SUCKS :-(
Hi,
I can't even write any files to my Tab 10.1. Am I missing something? I thought it would just show up as a USB drive, but it shows up as some kind of camera, and I can't write any files to the folder structure...
I've only had it for a few hours, but this is a surprise. Do other tablets do that?
HcMAX, how did you USB transfers to work? I know this is a newbie question and I should just do a more indepth search, but hopefully you can just chime in for me.
FWIW, I have yet to find an mkv, player combination that will not be choppy. I've resigned myself to using mp4's. Also...keep them under 2gbs...

If you mkv (h.264) files are high profile you will not find one :-(.

There are other ways to transfer ALL types of files to your Tab, like doing it over wifi. Go to the Market and grab Websharing (not free) or WifileExplorer (free) or any other you want, and follow the directions. You basically type in the I.P address of your tab into a web browser and transfer files that way.
Now as for playing said mkv files, try Moboplayer or just convert them to mp4. I assume you have Windows, look for "Handbrake", it's free and solid, or look for "Freemake" also free.
My personal anecdote, Tegra 2 has been a disappointment multimedia-wise. I took my 10.1 Tab back to Bestbuy the other day and got a Verizon Tab 7" off craigslist new-in-box for $200, couldn't pass it up. The PowerVR SGX gpu in the Tab 7" paired with "Mvideoplayer" puts video playing on the Tab 10.1 to shame.
I'm staying clear of any Tegra 2 SOC device with Nvidia gpu. The PowerVR SGX is still taking prisoners it seems.
I just would like to share that I have been able to transfer an .mkv using the normal windows Mpd or w/e transfer. as we know transfering .avi work, no problem, but trying to copy a .mkv crashes explorer for some stupid reason.
I had an mkv that i couldnt transfer and while i am sure a wifi transfer would work as suggested, it would be slower than just usb.
what i did is, through windows, take out the file extension, so my file was originally called movie.mkv, now its just called movie. I tried renaming it to movie.avi, still crashed it. now once the file no longer has a file extension, windows lets u transfer it, no questions asked. once on the device, use a file manager(stock one doesnt let you rename file extensions) to add the .mkv once its on the device. I used androzip, but i am sure others work.
Hope this helps people trying to transfer files to tab, yet windows explorer just crashes.
If any one know any other file managers that let you rename the file extension, please let me know, i am not really fond of androzips UI
thanks.
Problem with movies being to big to transfer fixed !!
If the movie is too big to transfer just split the movie in half with (HJsplit 3.0) software and transfer it over to your tablet use WIFI File explorer pro to transfer
works flawlessly with Samsung tab 10.1.
Usually, MKV does not supported by Samsung Tab since they only can support H.263, H.264, MPEG4, WMV, DivX videos. So converting MKV to mp4 is necessary. I ised Brorsoft Video Converter to deal with my videos. It works great. Download and have a try.
downloaded and transferred a season of Naruto to my phone's SD card, there's one particular episode that cannot be played and shows the above error message.
Is there a reason why this particular file cannot be played while all the apparent same type of files can be played without problem?
Have you tryed to play it with a different player? say...rockplayer? or did you check if it`s working from pc?
Would you mind telling me the file type?
All the files are avi, they all can be played on pc.
In that case get and .avi converter and convert them to a supported file type by your device. Or Remove them from your device and rerip them to your computer then re sync.

Wvm is a file format used by a program called wave to store engine data. Shouldn't be possible to have it as a video file but you can open the file on a pc using vlc media player and use its view codec menu option to see what codecs are used.
It could be just named .wvm so people can't guess its codec by the file extension but vlc would tell you.

thanks
wvm
okay, so from what I can tell the file is stored in:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/****.wvm
I downloaded the file, and opened it in VLC Media Player and it shows:
- Stream 0
---Type Audio
---Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga)
---Sample rate: 22050 Hz
---Bitrate 80kb/s
I can only think that this is either the audio file and the video file is sitting somewhere else, or that this is the video and audio file and it is encrypted in such a way that it is only recognized as audio.

You should be able to tell if it is really just audio by the files size in megabytes.
If it is small it is likely just audio.

i was wondering the same thing. Found the movie in the place mentioned, it's called framwork_345345_blahblah.wvm
I can play the opening "20 the century fox" part in any media player then it hangs. However, Gallery can play it fine. I am going to try and move it out and put it in my movies dir and see if gallery sees it .. nope, it will play from that directory if I use Gallery as the player, but the Gallery up doesn't show it as a movie in my movies list. Wonder if I play with the extension...
Edi: nope, even changing the extension to mp4 didn't work. Unless gallery didn't refresh or something.

Yes, the movies are removed.
I have a similar issue....but I'm going to add a little twist here.
So I purchased the Wolverine DVD from Walmart, it came with a digital copy and a code to be able to download a copy from the Google Play Store. I did this, and then decided to move the movie to my external SD card. When I try to play the movie, it hangs during the "Universal Studios" opening at about 12 seconds in and then displays "Video cannot be played". I've downloaded countless different video players, but all have the same result.
Now here's the twist.... I used a file explorer app to locate the video folder and selected the movie file, it gave me the options to select which of the many video players installed I wanted to use to play the movie, I selected the stock player, and played the video through there instead of opening it from a video app directly, this time it worked! The movie opened, and played fine, but when I stoped the movie and tried to use the same procedure again, it failed and now displays "Video cannot be played" yet again.
Now no matter what I try, I can't get the video to play. This is very confusing, how can it work once, and then not work again, almost as if it got corrupted? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can confirm that you can't. I purchased the HD version of Elf for $5 and moved a copy of the file to my computer. When I try to open the file with HandBrake, it states: Scan failed: Unrecognized file type.
Would be nice to figure out how to remove the DRM on the google play movies so I can play them on the TV without having to purchase a chromecast. I wouldn't mind one, but it sucks being forced into it. Only other option is to download the BD copy online.
Hello,
I m a new user to this group. Would like to post my views since I was searching for the same thing as you guys are.
I downloaded couple of movies from playstore. Reading the previous comments, I went to the directory - Andorid/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/*. there I found 3 directories - knowledge, subtitles and some blasdfjsd. I checked all 3 and came to know the last directory fjsdnfdjnd, contains my movies since the file size was huge.
I have Astro File Manager, using it, I copied one video file from that dfdsjnfdsjf folder, pasted it in Downloads folder. Then I selected that file -> Open As. It gave me some options. One of them is Video. Selected it. A list of video players came up.
Selected MX Player since its very renowned n can play any format. Ta Da. It starts working fine. I can play, pause, stop.
Only thing needs to be remembered is, for playing this file, you have to go in file explorer and then play as MX player.
If I open MX player to search for the file, I cannot see it in the directory.
I hope, i answered correctly.
Thanks.

the problem is twofold. a .pls file is JUST a playlist that tries to play...some other type of file. A .pls can be a playlist of nearly any filetype, so if a .pls doesn't que a given playlist it's likely because the file formats aren't supported.
an .nsv file is a Nullsoft Streaming Video format extension. I don't know a thing on Android that can play an .nsv
