If I currently dont have a contract with ATT and have the phone already, dont they require a 2 year contract anyways? So I might as well buy the phone for 250 instead of 500+?
I'm not exactly clear on this. Would really appreciate someone's advice.
You have to weigh the pros and cons.
If you already have the phone, you're simply just getting the sim + the service. You will not be FORCED to have data plan, etc. (which can QUICKLY add up) But you still need to go under contract, unless you want a prepaid sim. If you do get the att note, you are REQUIRED to have a data plan.
I tried to setup the minimum plan for a note from att:
It will be $59.99 per month + the phone 249.99$
24 months * $59.99 = 1439
1439 + 249.99 = 1689.75
So you spent 1689.75 for the entire 2 years (tax not even included yet)
Assuming you already have the phone ($500)...
With the same plan (no data) it will be 959.76 (2 year contract, no data) + 500 (phone) = 1459.76 for the 2 years. That's the plan and the phone
1689.75 - 1459.76 = 229.99
You only saved 229.99 if you already have the phone.. but you won't have data.
229.99 / 24 = 9.58
That's only approx 10 bucks a month...
My wife initially told me to get an unlocked phone.. but what's the point... we're already in ATT.. By the time I may want to unlock it, a better phone could be already out.
Just me .02
my option
I would choose the LTE Version from ATT is because
The LTE depending if your area supports the LTE Network it's worth getting.
The LTE chip is faster network then International Galaxy Note I think it only supports HSPA+ not LTE chip so that is something to think of. and also the ATT Version has 4 buttons on the bottom where as International Note only has 3 buttons.
renumber you got to sign 2 year contact with ATT for the device and pay monthly plan for the device what plan you choose is up to your dissension.
Check out your local ATT store and ask them questions about the device.
you can buy ATT phone without a contact you looking at $700 price tag....
I agree the only reason it would make sense for you to buy it off contract would be if you are going to use it on tmobile. If I was atnt the savings wouldn't be worth it. I'm a student and I can't afford to pay atnts monthly plan with data. Although I do wish I had lte but with tmobile I get my monthly plan for a lot cheaper and I can use this amazing phone.

Wonderful information A+++++
I bought my ATT note and unlocked it...its now on straight talk and im experiencing amazing speed everywhere I go I have 4g...and only at 45 a month for unlimited everything....cant beat it....so to everyone I would get the att version and unlocked it (just google it you find a site...cellularunlock.net...) and go to straight get the att sim card and enjoy!!!!!!!
4g is what kind of speeds? Not LTE though right? I'm curious as to how the network that you're running on is for voice calls. I'll be in New Orleans, Biloxi, and Alexandria, LA for most of the year.

You don't need to unlock it if you are going to be using Straight Talk. ST uses AT&T's network.
I bought my phone used from an AT&T store for $350. Purchased a SIM card on the ST website. Popped it in. BAM! Been smooth sailing.

Howd you get a used phone from AT&T? Do I just call my local store and ask if they have any returns?

And can you confirm if ST gives you 4g LTE speed as well?
Also, is it okay then to buy a phone without a ATT sim card and just get a ST sim card?
And is the ST android area of service truly that limited? Does that mean if I'm out in the country I wont have any voice service?

My apologies, I should have been more clear. It was a third party AT&T store. The phone I purchased was their display model. The clerk told me no one ever asked to see it because it was too large... Suckers!

So the ATT site shows the note for $649 off contract but they won't sell them online, says you have to go to a store to get one. So, I am wondering if I walk into a store if they will sell me one without a plan?
Once I have one from ATT can I just put my tmo sim in it and I'm good to go? Where can I find more information on this and is there anyone who can share experience of the ATT Note on Tmo's 2G network?
Thanks
You're better off in the international note forums for this, but a lot of the US users there have tmobile

I also see that amazonwireless has the ATT Note for 250 with 2yr, and then a note that early contract termination is $325, that nets out at a price of $575, so now I'm wondering if I could just order the phone with the contract and cancel the contract the day after.

Do you hate ATT that much? The international version is already unlocked. Put yout tmobile SIM in it, enter the proper APN and your phone and EDGE data will work. If you get the ATT version you must first unlock it and then I am sure your voice will work but not sure on data.
I must give it to you T mobile people, you are persistent if nothing. I think we have like 4 threads on this between the two forums wondering how to get the Galaxy Note to work on T mobile.
I forgot to add I wish you all luck in getting it to work to your satisfaction!

If you are fine with edge then unlock the phone and put your T-Mobile sim in.
You can unlock your Note here:
http://www.cellunlocker.net/
Now, if you are interested in 3g... I will be working on getting it going as soon as I get my phone Wednesday. If anyone else would like to work on it let me know how it goes...
But there are plenty threads about this, try to search next time.
No hate here, the difference between 750 and 575 is pretty good. what's it take to unlock it?

$30 and about 30min.
T-Mobile
I used cellunlocker.net/[/url]
Tried my work TMo SIM, had to go and manually select the APN. Using my Three UK sim picked up as roaming on ATT immediately.
Seems to work fine on TMo though.

I forget to say I wish you all luck! The difference is more than the $175 you are talking about. The difference is a great phone on LTE network versus at worse a phone that works on EDGE and at best 3G? Seems that would be worth the $175, but that is me. Again, all the Best! I offered my wife, who is on T mobile, use of my International GNote while I test drive the ATT version and she declined saying EDGE was too slow.

huh? Who said that? Read... and then write. Seeing how I have the International version, I in no way think it is a worse phone. There was no comparison of phones only a phone on network(s). The ATT LTE network is huge where I live.
Ill share my story, got my galaxy note from Att yesterday for 299.99 plus tax. Unlocked it through cellunlocker.net. Entered the Tmobile apn settings for internet and mms. I don't mind the edge data connection because where I live its all I get. I'm planning to do a insurance claim (which is $200) keep my current note and return the new insurance claim note to Att before the 30 days to get my money back. Net cost of note is about $200~… edge works great on the note btw I recommend it on Tmobile if you don't mind the edge connection.

So your bragging about performing insurance fraud? Wow
Amazon Wireless usually has extra ETF's for their on contract prices. Read the fine print.
You would be paying $299.99+ tax ($320ish), then $325 ETF, then paying for unlock($20ish). Easily over $650. I say look at an unlocked International Note, save yourself the hassle and get the better processor while you're at it.

So I have the S3 on pre-order and this will be my 1st international unlocked phone. I currently have the iPhone 4 on AT&T US.
When I get the S3 do I simply throw the sim in and call AT&T to activate? Are there any hidden fees when activating a new phone not sold via AT&T?
Is there anything I need to know other than that, like will my phone not be eligible for any US based software upgrades/services, etc.. Will the charger have an adapter for the US? Basically are there any negatives to importing it now rather than waiting for it to hit the states?
Thanks!

Thanks for the info, would we need to root the phone to get the updates via xda or can we keep everything stock and still be ok?
So in terms of the sim, I'm guessing if you had something other than a micro-sim you would need to cut it or order another from AT&T.
You may need to enter in at&t's apn settings to get data and mms working.

There's only positives by importing phones from Europe:
It won't be in the AT&T system as they don't have the IMEI number ( good for gophone users too)
You will receive updates first like Europeans and not wait for US carriers
It will get a lot of developer support since its the international version
Depending on where you import the phone from ( where you purchase it) they might include an adapter for charging like Handtec.
Soon as you put your sim card in youll be able to make and receive calls and also receive and send sms. You might have to put your AT&T apn settings to get mms and data like someone else mentioned. Only "bad" thing about importing is you won't have AT&T support such as warranty and stuff. But otherwise it's definitely worth it . This will be my 3rd import besides the GS2 I9100 and the international Galaxy note.
Go to AT&T store have them change the network settings on their end, for some reason is different if ur not using the iPhone.
youre all forgetting the best part.
AT&T smartphone plan = 30 dollars
AT&T non smartphone plan =10 (if you have a texting package, and 15 if you dont)
youre looking to save 20 bucks a month on data. just let them know youre using a flip phone, if they ask for IMEI number, give them one off a flip phone (if you have one)
theres no difference whatsoever except for price, so you might as well take your free $20 a month. ive been doing this for the past 4 years
thats not a bad idea.....but i want to be able to swap between my Note and the S3. so i need to keep the data plan i have on the note.

you check out strait talk? they resell AT&T service and I think it's like $45 monthly for unlimited everything. don't quote me on that though. I read that a long while back.
IMO.. if your grandfathered in at ~90.. unlimited everything then I wouldn't dump it.. I've had all services and I would say Att is only 2nd to Verizon.. and just barely.. I am with Sprint now which I would say is on par with ATT but the unlimited everything for 99 is what keeps me. I guess it depends on your usage though.. if you never go over 2gb or 3gb a month in Data then you probably won't miss anything.. only thing is Att carries most popular phones.. along with exclusivity with the NOTE and if you love the Note then everything else will fall short..
I'm using Straight-Talk with my Note and its pretty good for what you pay for $45 I dont know at what gb they throttle at but I've had service for around two weeks and I'm at least 1.5gb.
How does the straight talk prepay thing work? just pay for the card and slap the sim in and it works? Does the Note have to be unlocked or rooted? Is it using att or tmobile?
It would be on Cingular/AT&T towers, no root or unlock needed. Buy the Sim for 15 and the unlimited card for 45. Its like a 63 dollar bill total. Specify AT&T phone and regular not micro Sim... just go to straighttalk.com and shop there for the ATT sim card like the other guy said not the micro but regular size one
TMobile 4G is pretty good

It would be on Cingular/AT&T towers, no root or unlock needed. Buy the Sim for 15 and the unlimited card for 45. Its like a 63 dollar bill total. Specify AT&T phone and regular not micro Sim... Plug and play except the son change but its like 5 entries in son... Easy stuff and same coverage...ISH. No lte though

Im thinking about this one too sounds like i might get better service on this than on Straighttalk but since Im going off contract I'll probably try both to see which is better.
If your grand fathered unlimited you should just stay with them til they get wont honor your unlimitted. Just my opinion.
Do you get 4g service or 3g.... I know you said you don't get lte.....

You would only get 3G or hspa+ speeds on Straight Talk
straight talk
i think i will go with the straigh talk. i kinda of did a bit of research and i also saw that i could switch to tmobile by flashing a custom rom that allows me to have the radio for tmobile, but thats too much hastle. i dont really like att they a-holes i used to have the 4s and everymonth id get the "you'r using too much data" and thy would drop my speeds to .14mb, in my area lte is not great the best speed i usually get between work and home are 3-5 mbs so speed is not really a big deal for me.
You'll get capped on straight talk also... Heed my warning. Tether when absolutely necessary, and try to actually use less data. Be aware of data and this won't happen.

Hi guys I got a Galaxy SII i777 from at&t and still got like 7 months left in contract.
Here's the deal. I'm tired of their crap, and I'm about to cancel the contract, pay the penalty, and go with another company.
Already checked with MetroPCS, they wouldn't take my phone. They want me to get their phone.
And then I went to Boost Mobile, the guy said he can't do with Boost but he's able to hook it up with Net10 which is $50 a month unlimited talk & text with 1.5gb data plan. Which is not too bad at all.
Then I thought about Straight Talk. I know they got a $45 plan which is unlimited everything (actually I really don't need unlimited because I know how much I use it) anyways the question is if I cancel the contract, will I be able to switch to Straight Talk? I haven't done anything to the phone. No root no unlock. And I have no idea about it. I will certainly appreciate any help. Thanks guys.
Yes you can. No need to unlock your phone as long as you have At&t SIM when you sign up for Straight Talk.

I appreciate your quick reply. So hopefully tomorrow I'm going to cancel the contract and keep the SIM card as you mentioned, and I think that the Straight Talk got a better deal. But shouldn't I have to put their SIM cards in?
Buy a SIM card online at ST.com , when you receive it activate the SIM card online or call them. You can have a new phone number or have your current one transferred. You will have to create a new APN, the info you need comes with the SIM card. I've set up my wife and daughter on ST with no problems. I paid the fee to get out of the contract early and still saving money after a few months.
Make sure you order the SIM to us with AT&T.

Last time I checked you couldn't get any at&t Sims online from straight talk or Walmart.com. make sure you get the Sim and are able to activate service before you pay the etf to get out of your contact.

You are correct, he can only get a t-mobile SIM card from the straight talk and net10 websites. Try looking on eBay for any att SIM cards to use with net 10 or straight talk. On eBay the SIM cards range from 14 to 90+ bucks. If you plan to port or transfer your number, don't cancel your plan or you won't be able to port your number over. There is a pretty big thread already about straight talk.

Damn.. I decided to pay another month and then cancel it.. Between now and then, I wanna figure out this SIM card thing. I went on Ebay, they are insane. $90 for a SIM card? Get out of here..
Anyways, I was looking at StraightTalk.com, they have this T-Mobile SIM card and right down below, it says this if anybody noticed:
Code:
Straight talk SIM Card will only work with an AT&T or T-mobile compatible or unlocked GSM phone. To activate your service, you will need a Straight Talk Unlimited 30-day Service Plan Card for activation. Some data services may not be available with all wireless devices. Blackberrys and branded TracFone, SafeLink, NET10 or Straight Talk phones will not work with this program. In order for your phone‘s data services to work, you must update your APN data settings, also called the Access Point Name. SIM Card and Service Plan are not refundable.
So I was wondering maybe I can get T-Mobile SIM card and hook it up with mine? Any ideas?
You can get a t-mobile SIM but you won't get 3g, only edge network since their 3g operates on a different band than att

So the best choice would be net10 I guess right?
Net10, as well as straight talk, only sell t-mobile Sim cards at this moment, to get an att compatible SIM card for net10 or for straight talk, you'll need to go to eBay to buy them

I'm kinda mad I didn't get it now... This past weekend I was at target and they had byop sim packet for net10 on clearance for 5 bucks. I looked it up and it has all three sims for both carriers in it. The only reason I passed on it was because I figure I'd get throttled just the same as I am on straight talk.

How much data do you use On ST? Net 10 Is owned by the same company as straight talk. I have ST and use less than 2 gb a month and I rarely get throttled. I usually use between 15 mb a day On weekends, and between 75 Mb a day On weekdays.

ebay has the att net10 sim cards for $1. You'll end up paying $5 more a month using it through net10, but its not a bad deal. at least net10 clearly states that you get 1.5 gigs a month before being shut off. If you do go the net10 route, make sure it says somewhere on the page that its an att net10 talk sim card.
It's amazing that straight talk Sims are going for an outrageous amount compared to net 10 Sims. I wonder when straight talk will go down the 1.5 GB track as well

Are you getting at least 3g speeds with the Net 10 service or only edge?
To anyone following this thread, Net10 data is UNLIMITED. You get throttled, not cut off, after you reach the max.

HSPA+, so 4G. They now also have LTE.
Just letting everyone know that currently ATT doesn't have the unlock codes available. However cellunlocker.net have used them whenever ATT fails me as of now has them LG-D800 for the model number.. Just got my code and the first one I was sent worked (Phone said unlock successful and rebooted) Just need to get home to test with my international Sim. Cost was only 7.99
Confirmed working, just popped in an international sim.

I just got my unlocked code for my G2 last night for the heck of it. My question is for me to input this, I have to insert an international sim card in it? Is there a way to just manually enter it without changing sims to test?

I'm pretty sure you just have to put in a non-AT&T Sim. Go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a sim. That's what I do.

Thanks.
I have an ATT LG G2 w/ Straight Talk (I worked for years in the cellular industry so I figured I could avoid their CS issues 95% of the time). Working great, and no issues, but always looking at options. Had the Verizon unlimited plan, and realized I use data so little lately (most is on WiFi and only transit times are really on true data) that it made no sense to pay a ridiculous sum for what I used my phone for.
Have a T-MO SIM at home, they were like 1 buck shipped so I picked up a Micro and Nano just in case for a fast swap, so I may try their 70/7GB plan out and play a little more data heavy (my work re-reimburses 70 so anything up to there is a wash for me).
Ahhhh the joys of number porting, and GSM phones. Play w/ everything until you find the sweet spot.

This part confused me. You don't use much data but are going for a 7gb plan?
At any rate, how is Straight-Talk? I believe they recently started offering ATT network. I have used the tmo prepaid plan and that worked nicely.
Thanks
I don't use it normally, but that's just by habit. I may try being a little bit less data conscious w/ it if I try since my out of pocket isn't different between the two plans. I used to be a lot more data heavy, but with WiFi going everywhere I make it a point to drop onto trusted networks because it's easier on my battery (in addition to the obvious data savings). I was using under 2GB max monthly with my VZN Unlimited plan so it made no sense to pay over 2x what I am now with ST for it and I changed.
It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems. Their CS I've heard nightmares about, but I haven't had an issue. Their site freaked out and error'd during my PORT REQUEST and it billed my card 2x, and didn't port. I hit up their online person and they gave me a case and # to call. Called and within 30mins they had my port in process, 1 charge applied to it, and the other crediting back. So that particular instance was fine.
My only gripe is if you're an LTE speed purist as they appear to use a proxy that varies. I did a WHAT IS MY IP a minute ago and it was a service in FL (I'm in AZ) and another time I think it showed somewhere in CA. So they're using a proxy service which is going to cut your speeds depending on the hops back / forth / destination. Overall, though, for 45 bucks a month I have no complaints.
"It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems."
This is what interested me, precisely. I am not worried about speed. Honestly, if I get more than 4 or 5 mbit, I am prefectly happy, since I don't do much on the phone that really requires high speeds...like torrenting
with TMO 4g, I was getting up to 12mbit. With att lte and my particular home location, I am lucky to see 12mbit (although in areas near me I have seen 52mbit). But, TMO has a few dead spots in my area that att doesn't. At some point I will probably eat the ETF and go to a prepaid.
Thanks for the info.

NP. I simply activated, threw on CleanROM, tossed in the new APN settings and I was good to go. LTE and MMS worked right away. You do need the new SIM card I'm hearing so it flags LTE ability in the system, but I was a new customer anyhow so that's what they sent (and had free shipping when I ordered it).
That's really all that matters... your personal experience. I dig Prepaid because I bought all my phones anyways (I really hate contracts because I'm technology finicky) so it seemed like a better option to change to a GSM carrier since I was being sent a phone for our game anyways and I just had to choose the phone / carrier. Now I can service bounce if I want, and not pay ridiculous VZN prices. Switching my wife to her own VZN plan (we've had it so long they had a single line 60 dollar plan for unlimited/unlimited/2GB) and giving her my iPhone 5 and then changing to ST we save like 50 a month. Even if I bump my plan we still save (not counting my work paying for 70 anyways). It was a no brainer.
Haven't had an Android phone for an extended period since the OG Droid on Verizon and I'm loving the LG G2 and where Android is now.

Yeah, I kept my previously used tmo sim just for unlocking. It expired and I would have to get a new one. As to buying on contract, doing the math, I can wait a couple months, cancel the contract, pay the etf and should be cheaper than buying it outright for almost $700. I have to be as cheap as possible these days
