i need step-by-step instructions for installing a .zip on a rooted, safestrapped droid 3, preferably with the stock recovery. can anyone help? thanks!
edit: if anyone can direct me to a post that answers my questions, that would be just as helpful. the search function has yielded me nothing.
What exactly are you trying to install, though. I don't have droid 3 but I have droid x. Are you looking for instruction on how to boot into stock recovery too? I mean, for the droid x, it was pretty straight forward with stock recovery. As you as you enter the rec, there's an option to "install update.zip from sd" or something similar. With stock rec, I believe you can only install official update.zip, everything else will have "failed signature" or something of that nature (correct me if i'm wrong). So, the best way to install non-official zip file is CWM.
i am trying to install superuser beta 3. i just got cwm, so how do i flash .zips with it?
figured it out. i wasn't using the right .zip file!
if anyone could still post that tutorial, for future reference, i am sure the other n00bs would be greatful!

Ok this is probably a noob question,
i have a vibrant 2.2 tmobile, i just did the 3e recovery mod so that i could root the phone, i finally got it rooted and Im positive it is (terminal emulator says # when i type su,and superuser is working so Im pretty sure its rooted) so when i go into rom manager and flash clockworkmod recovery it always says it works but i cant get into the new recovery only the stock and i cant backup my original rom, does anyone know how to fix this so i can get into clockworkmod recovery?
Im new to rooting so sorry if this is a extremely noob question.
from stock recovery, select "reinstall packages"
I tried reinstalling the packages from the stock recovery but it takes me back to the stock recovery, Ive tried that many times but i never get the clockworkmod recovery, i have no idea why it wont enter the clockworkmod recovery? Can i install it without rom manager?
Download "update.zip" that is attached to this post....place it on the ROOT of your sdcard (not in any folders)
now this is the voodoo edition of clockwork....we are going to want to disable this to avoid issues (sorry, i dont have a normal clockwork available). so also download the disable voodoo .zip attached to this post.
DONT UNZIP EITHER FILE. DOWNLOAD THEM, AND PLACE THEM BOTH ON YOUR SDCARD AS IS!!
follow these instructions exactly:
1. place both files on root of sd
2. reboot into stock recovery
3. "reinstall packages"
3a. if it brings the red clockwork recovery, move onto step 4.
3b. if you dont see clockworkmod, choose reinstall packages again...if you see it move onto step 4.
3c. if you still dont see it, i cant help you further
4. now that you are in clockwork, DONT REBOOT OR FLASH ANYTHING YET, we need to disable voodoo
5. in clockwork choose "install zip from sdcard"
6. choose "choose zip from sdcard"
7. scroll to the disable voodoo zip and select that...confirm install, select "yes"
8. it should take less than a second, youll see "installation complete". (if you see "installation aborted" dont worry, just move on with the steps...see my explanation below)
9. Reboot before flashing anything, very important
10. you are now ready to flash using clockwork mod
PS - im not sure if youre familiar with voodoo, what it is/how it works....but the disable voodoo zip is just a precaution. im not sure if voodoo is built into this edition of clockwork, or if you actually have to have a voodoo kernel to actually be able to activate it. even though i think you need to have a compatible kernel, its better to play it safe.
with that said THERE IS A POSSIBLILTY THAT WHEN YOU FLASH THE DISABLE VOODOO, YOU MAY GET "INSTALLATION ABORTED"....dont worry continue on with teh steps, that just means that voodoo does not actually exist for you, which is probably ideal anyway
It still didn't work, i must be doing something Ive tried everything but it just wont go to clockworkmod.

Have you tried the toolbox?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
No i haven't tried toolbox yet but ill give it a shot.
I had a similar issue...
Are you getting the error "signature verification failed"?
No I haven't gotten a single error message, i flash clockworkmod recovery and it says success, I reboot into recovery i get the stock recovery, so Ive tried reinstall packages several times and i never get an error message although when I do hit reinstall packages it goes through in like 2 seconds but It never lets me into clockworkmod.
Use AIO Toolbox (recomended) -> install USB Vibrant drivers (if you don't have them, included with AIO Toolbox) and flash stock 2.1 rom (included in AIO Toolbox), after that use rom manager (from market) and install clockwork recovery, then download any kernel (for 2.1 rom of course) with root and flash it thru already installed CWM or flash ANY rooted custom rom - that's all (and it will take about 0,5h - not big deal).
toolbox is the way to go it will do everything for you just simply follow the steps from top to bottom. and you will be fine but before you go with tool box do read the noob guide it will surely make u understand the functionality of the toolbox. good luck
Hmmm......
Ok ill give that a try hopefully that will work.

This is the issue I am getting, even when using the files mentioned on this post.
How did you solve this problem?
EDIT: Just used the AIO Toolkit, restored to stock, rooted, installed ROM Manager, then went ahead and installed my custom ROM! HoneyGinger is talking to me and getting itself set up. Lovely!
Hey guys,
I was running 2.2 on my vibrant and was having issues with cwm as well. I followed the advice here and it worked great. Flashed Nero v3 and my phone is running like a champ!
Thanks again to everyone for their expertise.

I had this same problem hopefully this works
i tried to install with clockwork the gharmony 2.2 mod but i got a weird error about some file that couldnt be installed and now i cant boot and im stuck in the gtablet boot screen! i made a recovery image prior but i dont know how to use it. can ayneone help me out?
update - i am restoring it from the recovery image. however, to install the new ROM, i tried using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
the tnt gharmony was obtained from
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/15441-rom-g-harmony-gingerbread-233-with-honeycomb-elementsupdated-46-g-tabletzpad-t2/
i got some weird error i dont remember the name of. does anyone have any suggestions? it was like error 3 and some system file didnt install or something?
thanks so much
Sounds like time for an nvflash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
Then get clockwork back on it and restore your image (if it works). If not, you'll be back to stock and can then go install a rom.
thanks for the quick response to my post - but check out the update that i just figured out

anyone have any insight on the gharmony install error?
Ask the dev of the rom
Well, its an old streak 5, but it is new to me.
Just got the streak from someone today. Going to use it as a tablet. Any rom recommendations (not going to use it as a phone)?
Is this still the best rooting/recovery/flashing guide?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak_5/Flashing_Guide
Tell me if I have this order right --
First Root,
Then flash custom recovery, then custom rom of course.
Is there any 'one click root method'? Or 'clockwork mod recovery' equivalent?
Actually, the order is...
Install StreakMod Recovery
Install Superuser from zip
Flash custom ROM
One-click root methods aren't recommended and really aren't required. I already gave the name of the CWM equivalent in my list. Do not let the Streak boot normally after installing StreakMod or else the stock ROM will overwrite the recovery.
thanks. does streakmod look the same as the default recovery? cause that is what i am seeing. is there a way to reboot into recovery from fastboot?
do you really have to name the file update.zip and put it in root? so, i would rename superuser.zip and the customrom to update.zip eventually?
ok, figured out what i was doing wrong. im rooted. i just installed longhorn, and DSC and i get nonstop FCs -- rendering both roms unusable. why am i getting nonstop FCs? do i have to update the baseband?
For the Gingerbread ROMs you do have to change the baseband. The only other possibility is that you didn't do a factory reset (option 1 in the recovery image) before rebooting.
nevermind. my problem was i had to do a "factory reset"... which seemed like a strange thing to call it
Hi All,
New to the XDA forums and newly rooted my Droid Razr Maxx on 2.3.6.
I've followed the instructions for installing the CWM Recovery as highlighted here, but am running into troubles. I have moved both the .apk and .zip onto SD, installed the .apk but when doing the reboot it reboots normally and doesn't give me an option to install from .zip. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here?

Find the safe strap apk for the RAZR online, download, install, install recovery.
DROID RAZR MAXX
You access CWM recovery from within the app tray. Click on the Razor Bootstrap icon, click the Bootstrap Recovery, get success and then click the Reboot Recovery.
Thanks for the help guys I was able to get it working using the Safestrap.apk
Any suggestions on good ROMs for the Razr? And guides? I'm kind of new to this scene, I just kept my old Droid 2 stock and slow.
Hi
I am running a Stock LSD 4.1.2 JB Rom on my I9100 and do not wish to Root my phone. Yes it was rooted once but I have a specific reason for not wanting to revert back to root.
On a few occasions over the past year I have wanted to flash an app via "Recovery Mode", a .zip file located on the phone's external SD card.
On trying to flash, the following is displayed in yellow: -
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I have searched and searched this and other forums and although I can find many many instances when this has ocurred with other people I have not yet seen a generic solution to this problem.
It must ocurr because of a certain situation being prevelant within my phone and the references to it on forums usually suggest they are because someone is messing with a Custom Rom and/or a Rooted Kernal etc etc.
Could someone please tell what is happening, why this is the case and what can be done to sort it please.
I would say that my phone is just over 18 months old, never has had a problem, has been flashed with "Stock Roms" quite a few times and all without wiping or restoring to the factory settings. I do not want to wipe it to sort this problem out and am hoping an easy fix is available.
Hope someone can help
ps - I am trying to install the 4.2 Camera via the patched.zip and have tried to install the "Temporary" Clockwork Recovery" app with exactly the same problem. I stress I do not want to Root.
Anyone please?

Ermm, do not think so. Please review this thread before making wild comments like this: -

I know in some way though that you probably thought you were helping.
Surely this problem has a cause and a solution?

u have to first flash the 'Temporary CWM recovery .zip' then select 'reboot to recovery' option in stock recovery to enter 'temporary cwm recovery' there u select the 'Camera zip file' to flash.
PS- after flashing 'Temporary CWM recovery.zip' do not reboot ur phone the normal way by doing so u will lose ur temporary recovery.
each time before flashing any zip file u have to flash 'temporary cwm.zip' file first.
Hi thanks but I know this.
Can we get back to my topic please? I would not have posted if I could flash the Temp CWM Recovery. zip file
I just need to know what causes the error I am getting and how I can irradicate it.

As the error indicates, it fails to verify the file's signature. You can't flash unsigned packages via stock recovery. The solution is exactly what was already mentioned to you:either root and install a custom kernel/recovery (you don't want it, that's fine), or use a temporary custom (non-stock) recovery. While I had problems with the stock recovery flashing unsigned zips (obviously), I never had an issue with flashing a temp recovery. Try redownloading and reinstalling it - it could be a corrupt file. Which recovery are you trying to use? I recommend the temp touch CWM by Phil (the dev of the PhilZ kernel; use link in his signature). Always works like a charm.

Nice one! Thank you
It must have been a duff file (temp touch CWM by Phil) as the one I just downloaded, installed without a problem. It was the very same program file but from a different source.
Just installed the 4.2 Camera too so now going to play
Thank you again
