I have been around since the beginning of android. I Had a G1, then a Nexus One, to a MT4G, and now a Rezound. I rooted every one (minus the rezound obviously) and frequented the forums, learning and discussing the Mod'ing of these devices. As these past years have gone by, I have grown more and more concerned with the direction the community has taken.
Now there has always been at least some drama within the community, but as Android has grown in popularity, and more users seek info in the forums, the drama has ramped up exponentially it seems.
I remember when it was more about info than ego...
My request: Can we please get back to what its really about? Mod'ing, Flashing, and fun. Lets leave our egos at the door, they only do more harm than good. A sense of community and mutual respect is what we should strive for.
No personal insults/attacks be respectful even in disagreements
Don't steal code... give credit where due
Don't be a troll
Don't flame someone just for ignorance (if they seem to be habitual in forum misuse tell a mod so they can investigate and they can handle it appropriately)
Expect nothing, make no demands, ask politely... this goes for all sides
Remember this is a hobby and just for fun for most of us. Replace the fun with drama and what is the point.
I am sure there are other things I could list, but that will do for now.
Edit: resurrected from the dead...
Just so you guys know... Nobody is owed anything. No Dev owes you ROMs, root, or anything else. Vice versa, no user owes a Dev anything for their work. (paid market apps excluded) The rooting community is a hobby based entity. We work on respect and a mutual love of the platform. Donations are voluntary but a good idea. (It makes Devs feel appreciated)
Another thing... Drama... It kills the community. It runs off users and Devs alike. It creates a hostile environment that no one wants to deal with. When a device looses Devs it can be a death nail to the further development for that device.
When you think "just my one little question on ETAs won't be a big deal, I'll PM/IRC/tweet/IM the dev" you have to remember... about 100 other people are thinking the exact same thing. Its one thing to pop in the ROM's thread and if you don't see any activity for several days/a week, to post a quick question like "how is it going?", as dealing one one question and being able to answer publicly so others benefit too is not a big deal... Just don't get upset if the answer is a simple "we are still working on it" Often times there is a lot of effort put in but no real progress to report, no landmark goals yet made.
When you take the ETA/update questions into areas like IM that you start getting several people an hour pestering someone with the same question and it gets old...
^^^^^that's what it should about. But u got so many newbies here (and we all started somewhere of course) it seems as of the trolling and such come from New people not understanding the aspect of the site. But I k.ow I'm wasting my time typi.g his. Hope it happens.

When I first started coming here, it was all about the phones. Helpful people, friendly community, the works. After a while it just seemed to deteriorate. Every other thread was a flame war. It got to a point where i'd rather rack my brain or scour Google before I'd ask a question in here, because I knew some ego tripping person with no manners was gonna try to flame me for asking a simple question. A little respect/courtesy can go a long way, whether if ur helping someone or being helped.

Thank you for this post. +1000000000
I would like to see a rule enforced regarding swearing and overly aggressive, or hateful language.
I understand that phones can be frustrating, and so can users. But, if you can't post in a helpful and friendly way, you probably shouldn't post at all.
Temporary (and the threat of permanent) banning should be used to keep those in line who do not have the self control to handle posting in a respectful manner.
I wouldn't worry too much. With the Galaxy Nexus going on sale today, most of the babies crying that they can't unlock/root their Rezound are most likely in line right now to exchange their Rezound for the Galaxy Nexus. That should weed out many of those who do nothing but complain here in the Rezound threads.

This should be in the general forum, not a phone specific Forum.
That aside, I agree. This is a forum where the work people do is totally by choice, because they like it as a hobby or for whatever other reasons they may have. It's all about respect and patience, something a lot of people need to remember and practice themselves.

Not trying to start anything or flame anyone, but isn't it the Mod's job to determine whether a thread is posted in the wrong area and move it accordingly? It just seems that if you come behind someone who took the time to start a thread and tell them that its in the wrong place, you come off like a smart Alec and thus animosity begins. Not saying that u are, just saying some ppl get off on that and only that. Once again, not trying to start anything, just my two pennies.

It is their job, I was just saying what I think but I realized that I didn't put the phrase "I think " in that first comment. Yeah, I considered putting this in the over all general forum, but I am seeing so much craziness here in the Rezound forums that I thought it was needed here the most. I might throw it up in the Android general section if you guys think I should.
I love this phone, but I am getting impatient for root.
It is mostly the battery life issue. I hate extra batteries with a passion and hate needing to charge during the day as well. I am a light user, I just game a few minutes during breaks, send a few messages through the day and a few random things here and there. I really only have a smartphone for the convenience that it brings and the fact I like the Android OS and followed it since early 2007. With my MT4G even on a heavy use day (for me) I would have 40% left when I went to bed and charged, usually it was around 60%. With the larger screen and dual cores, I don't expect the same, but I know it will be better with cyanogenMOD on it. I can get through the day, but just barely, and that is on my lightest days.

Hmm...?? Who Are You Referring About? I Didn't Think I Said Anything Wrong Just Noting About Not Many People In "Here" Read The xda-General. If I Said Something Wrong I Do Apologize There Was No Condescending Intention.
Let's clean this up a bit, shall we?
I get the impression sometimes that we (speaking about everybody here in the 3D forums recently) make this place sort of "unfriendly" with sarcasm and troll posts, rudeness when people post in the wrong section, create duplicate threads, so on and so forth...
First of all, I will say that I am fully aware of my own contribution to this, lol. BUT... i was thinking earlier about when I started out over on SDX and how friendly and eager people were to help me when I was new to the android/Linux scene (although I still had somewhat of a basic understanding of it because of my knowledge of windows, Linux and especially android was a new world to me and much of the knowledge I have picked up since then was simply because people were so willing to offer help and their own knowledge - regardless of "noob" questions (when I simply could have used a search button).
Yeah, for whatever reason you just want to punch people through the computer sometimes when they post in the wrong section or make "hAlp my phonez is teh broken" threads that can easily be fixed with some searching around. But I think we should try to be a little bit more of a friendly and tolerant (and therefore tolerable... ironically) of the things that go on around here.
Anyways, just some dumb ass rant post. But I thought I would share this thought because I feel the action of it could be a positive thing around here.
oouuut.
So, I will be nicer to people. Let's all try this, shall we?

If I've helped you in any way... hit the "Thanks" button.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that since there's been a flood of Android phones hitting the market over the last year and a half or so, there's also a flood of people who come with it. They buy a new Android device, hear about 'rooting' and jump on here. Not everyone knows the meaning of respect, and they expect things to just be handed to them. There's definitely more idiots on here than before, but also just more people overall. No matter where you go, the more people around, the more idiots there will be. It's unfortunate indeed.
I try to be helpful, but it's definitely aggravating when someone just flat out doesn't read a damn thing, and asks a question that's clearly typed in the OP. When I joined, I didn't know ANYTHING about rooting, ROMs, etc. but I read a few things and learned.
There are a few forums that I use that have a n00b section with zero intolerance for the replies to questions in said sub-forum, maybe that would be nice, then we can segregate the n00bs and flame more well-known users for asking stupid things. Lol

I used to get on here several times a day, reading these forums, but it took me a long time to actually register because the few immature people that start a fight in the thread made it look irritating. Who cares? It's something else to read. That's why most of us are here, for some form of entertainment.
n00bs != newbies
Newbies don't know things and after TRYING to figure it out themselves, they have ended up, seeking answers for uncommon situations. This is OK.
n00bs, on the other hand, don't know ****, they don't give a crap about learning and expecting from others to give all the answers on a gold plate without moving a finger on their foot. This is not OK.
The sooner pseudomoralistic idiots realize this, the sooner will be this place be as it used to be before. If not, I'll continue to troll n00bs for my own amusement and you can kiss my shiny ass.

Yes, the "an answer is easily found by a very fast google search but I'm too lazy to do it or just expect you tell me" crowd is the problem I agree. Even if they are not the majority, when I see a new thread or question that seems like an easy find, I get really mad because I had to take the time to learn and search on my own. I've been on here since 2006 and I guess because of all the new androids out there you get people who are not technologically inclined trying to do technicological things.

first off you wouldnt believe the amount of buttholes and douchebags mods put up with on a daily basis. most often we only get called in when there is a problem, so everyone wants to talk about how things have changed and how it sucks putting up with the idiots. put on mod glasses, i would 75% of the people on here, instead of just reporting a troll or a n00b posting in the wrong spot or a spammer, they in turn flame, troll, spam the person that just needs reporting. so that means, we then have to clean everything back up, figure out who to get rid of and sort the whole situation. its not fun. if you want to see things change, be the change. report posts, dont flame the idiots, dont feed the trolls, just move on with your day. we arent afraid to boot people, we arent about "registration numbers", we are about supporting developers. but we cant be in every thread at once or all the time. if you see something out of place, report it, everyone has that ability. but most of us just return the favor of flaming people.
i became a mod, because i believed that a difference could be made. i reported posts, before i was a mod, i was helpful to people, i tried to teach n00bs the correct way of doing things instead of treating them like trash. yes there is an over abundance of users now due to the influx of android devices, most of the new users dont know anything, and they wont ever learn anything if we all are douchebags to them.
if XDA is becoming something that it wasnt in the past, its because we as a user base are allowing it to be so. be a respectful user, help people out, if someone is doing something they arent supposed to report them. serisously, how are we supposed to know whats going on if we arent notified?
/steps off soap box
I think a large problem too is it really does feel like the mods play favorites. I don't want to bring up the whole Chad.Goodman thing, and how he was reported and pulled in a matter of hours, yet, when he reported other non-GPL complying dev's nothing was done to them. Or my own situation, having important threads detailing hostile actions from one particular user being deleted without any reply or communication from a mod as to why. That user having no repercussion for his actions.. It's really feels that it's not an equal ground forum a lot of the time.

i agree that it may feel like that sometimes, and sometimes mods need to do a better job in communicating. users will not however see everything that goes on behind the scenes. if we infract someone we dont broadcast it, its really no one else's business if i infract you, thats why other users cant see other peoples infractions. if you dont like the way a mod handled something, ask him (or her) how/why they did what they did. dont be hostile about it, just pose a question. i know we are more than willing to talk to users about their issues, and come to the best possible resolve.
These forums are getting really annoying. Flaming just doesn't stop, WTF? People, is it lack of sex, self reasoning for spending 500 bucks/pounds or else that makes you flame people who are not happy with their prime?
Don't get me wrong, i'm a massive android fan.But some of you are just a plain disgrace to androi fan base. What's wrong with person saying that he didn't like Prime? This and that didn't work for him. So what, he needs to be flamed for that? NO. Someone else might read his post and realise that this is exactly the info he was looking for. So in the end, even negative experience helps someone out in the long run.
I'd like to see a trend where people urge other people not to flame, instead of adding fuel to it. Do you think we can do it?
True if you have a problem or need help then this is the XDA developers forum, however its not the complaining and frustration forum. If one is unhappy with his product let him take it to the manufacturer or dealer and write his review to a review forum.

+1 for reading comprehension, -2 for actually understanding.
There is a Developer subforum for EVERY device with an XDA forum.
People come to General for a given device to help make a decision to buy or not. Also to look for solutions to known issues, or to post a new issue and get help.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to be enthused about a device. It's great to happy with your device.
It is, however, idiotic (or at best immature) to stick your fingers in your ears and go "Lalalalala, can't hear you" when there are obviously a plethora of issues with a given device, or an advertised feature that doesn't work up to standard specs.
Point taken, IMO its not constructive, I guess then there is no issues, lets the complaining, flamming and bad mouthing go on, it is the General subforum

Mindless, rampant flaming is as pointless and non-constructive as mindless, rampant fanboi-ism.
Many of us are on XDA because we want to get the most out of our gadgets.
Others just to have high tech toys to play with.
The difference in mindset between these two types of people is what causes the conflicts.
Understanding (note I do not say "tolerance" <spits to clear bad taste from mouth>) each other's mindset will go a long way towards preventing conflicts.

Key word is FANBOYISM. Some of Android fans are just as bad if not worse than iOS fanboys.
There should be one complaint thread. I think the whole issue is being brought about because of the repeats of the same complaints about the tablet. Every bad review says the exact same thing.
I do agree with you though. The flaming needs to stop.
Sure, Prime has its problems.
But I compare Prime with Xoom, SGT 10.1 that I've used so does Prime better.
Do you see that these users are complaining and creates threads to the right and left? No.
both Xoom, SGT 10.1 has been really buggy and has not worked completely 100
All products with android have problems and bugs.
When I buy an android product I am aware that there will be bugs and that sometimes you will feel like a beta tester.
People must remember that both Tegra 3 and ICS is new and requires testing.
Asus makes a really good job with support and are quick updates. there is no manufacturer that is as quick to update, and support their units as Asus.
XDA used to be the place to turn to for help and to learn new things.

Why should there be one complaint thread for many types of complaints? One thread for GPS, one thread for lightbleed, one thread for WiFi, etc, etc I find reasonable. And usually there is. If someone posts a new thread they are usually civilly directed to the existing thread on the subject, where all the available info is in one spot.
And even then I would find it reasonable if someone is having an issue out of the ordinary with any of the current issues.
And I have no issues with each RMA horror story in a separate thread either. People need to know about this and not have it glossed over.
Guys cool down man^^
Ask yourself, why do you make a post? Whats the motivation behind it? Do you post out of frustration, because you're angry? Or just because you want to tell someone that he's an idiot?
These are all the wrong motivations in my opinion. There is one thing i really dont understand. Why can't people check the first 1-2 pages of a forum before they make their own thread?
Neither flaming nor whining is constructiv in any way. GPS problems exist, but posting it in every 2nd thread wont make those problems go away.
This forums are here (imho) to find solutions and reporting issues is important. But whining is not reporting an issue. And flaming is not giving a solution. Its just wasting anyone's time. If you report something, give as much info as you can and try it out in any possible situation before posting here. Then wait for answers or check later if a fix has been found.
And I dont want to flame or anything but everytime i see someone posting only to whine and tell us that he will return this stinking thing an image pops into my head:
A child that has just gotten a lollipop but realizing that its not his favorite flavour.
I love mine but it does have small problems.

I think there are good points on both sides. It is a development forum but this is the general section. IMO the bottom line is why post a story about your experiences, issues, and going to give up a device, when a post with almost the exact same thing, same issues, same receive date, etc is 2 posts above yours. Post it in the same thread or risk teasing, at least about it being so "12 seconds ago"
edit opps repeated what cloud5 said 2 posts up.
reedit: In fact where people post a new issue, whether leaving the prime or not there is generally no flaming or teasing like the hot pixel thread earlier today.

Hopefully this will not be closed or bashed! I need some help here, I'm trying to decide between the GS3 or jumping ship to the iPhone 5. I'm disappointed in the iPad, feel like I will feel locked down with the iPhone but I'm ready for a change... I feel like the Galaxy won't be that big of a change for me usability wise, just performance and hardware upgrades so I'm also interested in anyones experiences with Jean Bean ROMs for the EVO 3Ds to make it most like the Galaxy at least for me to decide about the jump to iOS. Hope I can get some help and not just guys in their mother's basements trying to start an argument. Thanks in advance guys!

I don't know much about the iPhone 5, I've experienced iOS6 myself (obviously not much different from iOS5) and it seems a bit smoother. I honestly thought the GS3 was sub-par build quality wise. it felt too lightweight and slipped through my hands easily. I would google both and make a comparison for yourself. Because posting the same thread 3 times, once in the development section trying to start a flame war, and then twice here, is going to get you infracted from hell. I'm not a mod, but I can tell through these course of events you won't last here very long if you keep these kinda actions up. Not trying to be an ass, just giving you a friendly heads-up so you don't get in too much trouble. Hope I helped a little bit
I don't consider asking you (even with the "p" word) to read the forum rules and post in the correct forum "bashing", but now that you have I will try to help.
Here's a pretty unbiased review of the two phones, and here's a side-by-side feature comparison. And one more review with some sample pics from each device.
As far as simulating the SGS3 on an Evo 3D goes, that will be pretty hard to do since Samsung uses TouchWiz and HTC uses Sense, but if you want to try there is some information on getting TouchWiz for the Evo 3D in this post. The TouchWiz launcher on top of one of the CM10 ROM's in the Development Forum may be the closest you are going to get to simulation of the SGS3, but there are so many other differences that you probably would be better off going to a Sprint store or BestBuy and trying the real phones hands on. Since you can't replace iOS on an the iPhone with another operating system, it's probably best to compare the two in their stock configurations.

You did help thanks... I posted more than once because different crowds read different sections and I wanted the view point from all of them. The mod is pretty much saying just find out for yourself. I am sick of the way my EVO 3D works even with a replacement, I work in web/media in sports and I use my phone a lot and have to decide quickly I don't have time or all the knowledge to test every ROM myself LOL

Thanks I appreciate the help, wasn't really lashing out directly at you, I'm sorry but like I said in the other reply I depend on my phone and the apps for my living so I need to decide something soon.
Well also, you should also realize, that xda is a community of over 4,000,000 users, and that the mods already have enough to deal with, and the last thing they need is a triple post on top of their day. A few minutes of patience is all you need before you get an answer. There are several people who check the q&a forums very often (ramjet, flashallthetime, coal686, and myself, just to name a few) and its not like you won't get an answer, its only when you post the same thing over and over that irritates people, especially when you violate the rules on purpose to try and get the answer you want (thread in the dev forum). So like I said, just post once, and check back every so often, and you'll guaranteed get your answer. Obey the rules, that's all any of us here on xda of of people

What I would suggest is go to each individual forum to which phone you would like as your new daily drive and poke around to what actual users are saying, as for iphone 5, I would admit to being anti apple. Issues with maps on ios 6 is a huge issue, it could spell the downward spiral for the iphone?
( Don't ask me for help, as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh!!!)

I admin websites with more users than that and I've never had that to be a "problem" I don't get you guys here LOL suppose to be here to help and interact but anyway I ask anyone please do not post anything on this thread unless it is to answer my questions, thanks!
Go to Q & A in the stickies under ask mod any question and that gives you some answers.it is a very hard decision to go with any new phone, research on any forum is your best bet, actual users will have both points of views, bad and good, pro's and con's

Would you mind linking a couple of the websites with user forums that you admin so we can take a look? Maybe we can learn something from seeing how user questions and issues are addressed on other sites.
I know this post doesn't directly address your questions in the OP, but I've already given you as much information as I have on that, so maybe you wouldn't mind sharing something that might benefit the rest of us?
Thanks in advance.

Actually here is my full response to u since u insisted on calling me out in a public forum
No I'm saying learn to search learn try things out on your own. Make up ur own mind on what's best for you. Ask for help when your stuck.
Your saying...spoon feed me everything I want so I don't spend my time looking for myself and oh btw I'm gonna ask a question in the dev section cause it'll get seen more there. Go look in the dev section. How many question threads do u see in there. Did you look at the stickies. The one that reads "must read before u create a thread" or did u think u r special and not subject to the rule.
Obviously you thought that your above them cause you told people in ur thread not to get butt hurt cause u posted a thread where people would see it.
So who makes sense here. On xda we do not spoon feed members. We help members that run into issue. We encourage members to seek out answers on their own. There is a ton of info to get educated on. Use it. Then contribute. Its not that hard.

Lets keep this thread on topic I'm pretty sure thats a rule somewhere... spoon fed or not you guys should be nice and help educate someone especially if they are thinking about leaving android. Going through everything on your own is overwhelming and contradicting so many time especially when you don't have time to. What would be you opinion, you really haven't even clearly given it, I'm sorry if I have overlooked that. What do you think I should do if I am sick of the HTC experience, give the new EVO a try or go to GS3? who knows you might even also like the iPhone?

We answered your question in the first 3 or 4 posts. We told you to try each phone for yourself, and do some snooping around and see what you want to try for the EVO 3D. I don't know what else you want us to tell you. And side note, just because you admin other forums with more members, it doesn't give you the right to be a **** on our forums. Nobody wants to help someone who sets themselves higher than everyone else. We answered your question. Try each phone, and look around in the forums and decide for yourself. There's not much else our community can suggest

Ok after reading all 2 pages, I think I feel cheated.......I will NEVER get my time back! LOL
allofthepeople, here's a suggestion! (hopefully you read all over it and your ADD doesn't kick in)
If you're going to come into a public forum like this and expect people to help you then it helps to follow the rules.
1. Going back and forward with a moderator, will get you NO WHERE!! I don't know how many idiots like yourself I see a day that think they will win an argument with a moderator. Not saying you can't reason with them BUT the way you're acting, is not going to happen.
2. AGAIN, just in case you didn't read #1...This ex-iPhone user, junior high school **** where you think the world owes you something attitude is getting old. Follow the rules and stop geting butt hurt about everything that happens on the internet....GROW UP!
3. Take time from your superstar job (media/sports aka camera man) and go into every thread like the rest of us and decide what ROM is best for you. Also there's this thing called YouTube......you can watch videos there and see as much reviews as you want about any phone.
4. At the end of the day, XDA doesn't need yet another thread from yet another self entitled member asking what's the best ROM or what phone should I get. 6 months to a year when you decide "I don't like this phone" you're going to be the one stuck with it, SO why do you think our opinion should matter??
Oh and if you want this SGS3 feel or whatever.....go find Devil Toast (CM9) and download the add-ons and launcher here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1701961 and enjoy!
[EDIT]
I see you're a bit of a spammer and maybe have a reading problem (most likely that ADD kicking in) because you opened up 2 threads before this, both of which got closed down.....consider yourself lucky that the moderators haven't sent you on vacation I've seen people banned for less!

Could have just said the last part lol and I'm not an ex-iPhone user, never had one thats the point. I am not the one getting butt hurt lol I have read articles and watched videos. Was just trying to get a consensus from supposed educated people who might have had the same experiences I did and could give a little more light on it than I found in the other posts but I guess thats being "spoon fed". Please people stop trying to argue with me and if you don't like my thread then don't reply!!!!!!!
actually im gonna close this thread as the question has been answered and the thread is non longer needed. This is your last warning to listen to what a moderator tells you.
Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age, but do we really need to post, "downloading", every time a new ROM version is released? It's hard enough to get through threads that are multiple pages, without having to sift through the, "downloading", pollution. It serves no purpose. You may as well tell everybody what you had for breakfast, while you're at it. How about we all make a New Year's resolution to cut down on frivolous posts? Rant over, thanks for listening, carry on.

Anyway, what's your favorite lp rom so far? I keep trying them and going back to beans stock with skydragon kernel and xposed. The bugs and lack of customization (mostly bugs) keep sending me back.
Always appreciate your input.
Relax and have a good one!

At least it's in it's own thread, and not polluting someone else's. See, the thing is, from the title, you probably could get an idea what this thread is about, and decide if you want to read it or not, but if you're trying to get information on a ROM, 100 posts that say, "downloading", are no help whatsoever, but hey, thanks for sharing.

Using Bliss Pop. The performance of Lollipop goes a long way to overcome the lack of customization. I see CM12 has gotten the camcorder fixed, so I'm sure the other ROMs will have it shortly.

I used to, until I realized that if they won't read what has already been posted, they probably won't read what I post in response, so I don't.
My favorites are the ones that post a question in the middle of the night, and then three hours later, start to complain that no one has answered their post. Those I DO respond to.
A close second are those that are TOO LAZY to use simple punctuation and capitalization of their sentences when they ask for help. Apparently they feel that even though we are doing them a favor in helping them, we should also have to figure out what their mumbling are, because they are TOO LAZY to spend a few extra seconds to be clear. Needless to say, such individuals seem to have greater difficulty with their devices than the rest of us; I wonder why that is ...

Sometimes I post questions at 2am. And I don't get mad...normal people are asleep. Lol. If its a pressing issue, I google If its somewhat severe, I do a restore. I backup before everything. Everything else can wait. WHY CANT PEOPLE JUST WAIT. I'm currently waiting. I want a 100% working aosp. And it doesn't exist yet. Most devs aren't worried about kk now. Its all l.p. which I love. But it's so buggy. So I wait. I'll ask maybe once a week or so "what's the bugs in the newest build" and I wait...and data is still iffy? Okay. I'll wait.

Just had one in the LG G3 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/usb-internet-mode-verizon-t2969583
Threads like this are exactly the reason I tend to avoid speaking up at all in any of these forums. They tend to be a full of cliques where you're either part of the "in" crowd of "smart" or "experienced" people or just another stupid noob who either doesn't know how to read or are "too lazy" to search. How about you guys either just answer the questions or keep your smart mouths shut. There's no need to belittle or insult someone just because they're not as "smart" as you are. I've had my say, so I'll go back to quietly perusing the forums....
