3d question - HTC EVO 3D

Hi. I plan on picking up the Bottom Mobile version next week. I've done a lot of reading about how the 3d was nothing but a gimmick and it was only cool for about 20 minutes.
What I'm wondering is if there's anyone that actually uses and enjoys the 3d feature a lot. If so, what are your reasons and what kind of cool things do you use it for? Games? Pictures? Movies?
Thanks!

All of the above. It is gimmicky somewhat, but I feel more immersed in the picture or movie with it.
Don't sell the 3d short though. Even if you think the 3d feature is not that great, the phone is a great phone specs-wise and is even better rooted.

Yeah what Coal 686 said, I wanted this phone for price/performance (got it for 50 bucks new from radioshack, it's dual core and has 1gb ram and very good GPU) so even without the 3D it's a great phone. that being said I love 3D and being able to take 3d pictures and watching 3d content without glasses is pretty awesome. Now if only there was more relevant 3D content for this phone...

as the above mentioned the phone is as good as it gets when it comes to value for money...here at Greece i bought it for 350$ and it kind of rocks everything else at this price since the next one with these specs (dual core,1gb ram,4.3"screen......) come at least 480$..so even if you don't like the 3d everything else is more than worth having...

How useful is 3D?

I'm blown away by 3D couple of times I played with the phone in sprint store. Before seeing 3D in action, I was leaning heavily towards SGS2. SGS2 is thinner, faster, has better camera, 1080p recording and I like Touchwiz better than sense.
But 3D is tilting my decision towards Evo 3D. 3D images are cool. More than cool, I believe it adds real value to an image. Looking at 2D photos, I can feel that I'm missing something.
That brings me to my real question -
As cool as 3D is, how practical is it? I mean, I can take 3D pictures and videos for my own sake. But one of the real pleasure of taking photos in a phone is to share in email/FB. But I can't send 3D images to any one unless they happen to own a Evo 3D as well. No one I know has 3D TV or monitors (neither do I). There are no 3D tablets/laptops (yet).
My concern is, if 3D is not practical and the only way to view the photos taken in the phone is in the phone itself, I think after couple of months, I'll stop using 3D altogether and start regretting that I got this phone instead of SGS2.
What is your opinion? Is 3D a real useful feature or is it a gimmick/fad that you think you'll stop using after the honeymoon period?
If you take it in 3d its not stuck in 3d..
EVO was first with front camera and 4G now everybody is doing it..
I expect the same to happen with 3d, the tech is getting better and once these old people that only remember there terrible 3d from the 70's go away then adoption will boom
But i digress
Bussin Caps from my 3D shooter
The evo 3d is stereoscopic, right? I think it's mostly a gimmick, and the situation you described in the op are probably correct. Plus, the 3d function on my 3ds has already gotten a bit old. It can give headaches too.

I had to share this one. Really shows how good this 3D can be.

I'd say honestly that the 3D may seem gimmicky but honestly it's a nice feature to have. I honestly hardly use my camera. I rarely did on my evo, I rarely did on my epic. I'll probably rarely use it on my 3vo but the parallax screen function of the phone makes watching videos fun. Knowing that I have a camera that does 3D might inspire me to put more use into it. The 3D world has just been blown open thanks to HTC and also thanks to youtube for making it so easy to share the content.
I think that while I may hardly use my camera I will definitely be quick to snap up anything that seems nice and serene just for the sake of being able to share the experience in a more vivid way.
I would say be a part of the rEVOlution and get yourself the 3vo.
Hopefully other makers will start incorporating the parallax technology even if they don't offer the 3d cameras because there is a lot to be seen here.
A front facing camera was a gimmick till everyone had one. Putting 3D capability in more hands will make it more of a necessity than a gimmick. How many people out there wish they could watch 3D content but cant afford an expensive 3DTV? I paid $61 for my phone. If the technology is readily available for anyone it will catch on and at $199 or less it doesnt get more readily available than that. So much content is going to be uploaded of the next few weeks and months from this particular handset it will blow your mind. IMHO, it catches on in a big way.
3D is mostly useful when photographing members of the Handsome Boy Modelling School.
3d is great.. And the 3VO is actually faster than the SGS2 most of the time.. Or the same speed in some cases
How useful is it? 100% pointless. Very few people (relatively speaking) that you will be able to share them with with out handing them your phone. That was fun at 1st by the way. already 2 days in I'm sick of letting other hold her.
With that being said once more people get on board with 3D and I really do believe the will for TV and phones. Then it will be "useful".
How cool is 3d? Phenomenal! havent even taken a 2D video, or picture yet.
Not a gimmick just a gigantic 3D Cherry on top of your evo sunday.

thats about the coolest thing i've seen, wow
Sure, I know exactly what you're saying. Once the novelty wears off you have to be left with a device that is practical or great for everyday stuff.
If you plan on rooting, you may want to take into account the amount and types of developers that are active for each device. That's what kept me interested in the Evo 4g for the past year.
Honestly, for me, I know the 3D novelty will wear off pretty quick. But I prefer sense so I stick with HTC.
3d pictures are ok. The picture needs some setting up to be really good, I think... But watch some 3d stereoscopic videos on youtube. There are some bad ones, but there are some where the effect is very impressive. There was a ocean circus one that was very cool (can't post a link...)
I love the 3D pictures. Much better than I expected.

Right now. It's absolutely for gimmicks and casual fun.
I'm very sure that as time progresses, it'll get much more better and infinitely more useful.
It's future proof.
Well some loves 3D (as me) and some don`t like 3D!
I have a 3D Projector and monitor. Can`t wait until there will be a GSM version for Europe!
I find the 3D very good. I am golf professional and today instead of using my normal camera to tap my lessons I used my camera so I could show them a full 3d playback of there swing. now only if it was about 3000 images a second I would be happy. That is what my High speed camera does.
Also I'm not for one to drop 800-4000 on a TV. So at $160 it is well worth it.

So happy with the Evo3D I went out and bought a 3D TV

I must admit,im sucked into the 3D Culture...Nothing beats having the option to play games or movies in 3D if available...

Who Could Have Guessed: 3D Hurts Your Eyes
After experimenting on 24 adults, a research team at the University of California, Berkeley has determined that viewing content on a stereo 3D display hurts your eyes and your brain. The scientific term is “vergence-accomodation,” which means that the eye must constantly adjust to both the distance of the physical screen and that of the 3D content. This can supposedly cause visual discomfort, fatigue, and headaches, which I had thought were just a part of life but apparently there’s a scapegoat: 3D technology.
In his Journal of Vision article, The Zone of Comfort: Predicting Visual Discomfort with Stereo Displays, author Martin S. Banks (also professor of optometry and vision science) writes, “When watching stereo 3D displays, the eyes must focus — that is, accommodate — to the distance of the screen because that’s where the light comes from. At the same time, the eyes must converge to the distance of the stereo content, which may be in front of or behind the screen.”
According to the article, 3D content viewed over a short distance (like with desktops and smartphones) is more visually uncomfortable when the stereo content is placed in front of the screen. In a movie theater, it’s the opposite: Stereo content that is placed behind the screen causes more discomfort than scenes that jump out at you.
With the explosion of 3D-capable gadgetry such as televisions and mobile phones, understanding just what this kind of technology is doing to our bodies may help us better use it in the future. The only problem is that technology tends to far outpace research, and until we get a better handle on its effects, we’re more or less walking blindly into a 3D world.

Supposedly Vizio has stepped up with their latest 3D TV's. Check reviews on Amazon....Tons of people praise them. My friend just bought the 47" 480hz model for $899 with 2 free shutter glasses @ Costco. He hasn't even checked out the 3D but keeps raving about the PQ of the 2D. He said he wouldn't even care if his TV didn't have 3D. Needless to say, I'm now looking @ the 55" myself($1,499). I've always been a Samsung guy when it comes to TV's but Vizio may change my outlook. I'm going to check them out myself this weekend. If not, I have a PC Richards hook up lol
Make sure you guys read up on the difference between "Full Array" and "EdgeLit" LED, then decide what's best for you

I have a 50" panasonic plasma 3d THX cert. and the picture is stunning and I'm pretty sure it was voted best picture blah blah blah. All I can say is DO NOT buy the DLP. From my experience and research its a cheap technology developed for tube televisions to keep up with flat panels that over time won't hold up as well as plasma and lcd. Plus everyone that I have spoke to has had their dlp television bulbs fail after 1.5 yrs. Ohh by the way 3d gaming is soooo fun and 3d movies are great too.
i moved my 42" Panasonic plasma to my room and bought a 55" Samsung 3D and it is incredible only wish i had gone bigger. this drove my evo 3d purchase.
Yeah I've read the same thing about the DLPs. They also make your place look kinda old.
I can afford a LCD now, but if I wait until the holidays I could get 3d for a nice price.
Football is getting ready to start, and I love me some Xbox. Decisions.

Thank you. I currently have a 55" Toshiba Regza that I love. Got it 2 years ago. If I could get a good sell for that one I'd be able to. I need to start researching more I guess. I know my kids would love it. I paid $1800 for the one I have now. (Income tax. One of the perks of having said 3 kids, lol)

@JayHarper I came from the Toshiba Regza as well(3 years old). Loved my Toshiba but it was time for an upgrade and with having the Evo and building my 3D collection it was time to get a device that could show the content i've been making to all my friends at once and not have to pass around my phone to 20 different people at a time..Loaded up on 10 pairs of 3D glasses and everyone can sit back and enjoy at once..
Playing Black Ops in 3D on my Xbox 360 was a shocker to me as well..Maybe I can dust off my PS3 too and enjoy what they have to offer.

3d is ok from time to time but if I watch a 3d movie or tv it makes me need to vomit, and I'll have a headache for hours.

Just bought atrix but.. should I get LG Thrill 3d

The atrix I bought with laptop dock is unlocked and running Alien, faux1.3, custom cemetery, and was planing on putting ubuntu for my webtop experience but I was chatting with an att rep. And he wiped out the thrill 3d at first I was like oh a rip off of infuse but he showed me all the 3d goodness and let me play nova 3d I was quit impress.
My question is im still under best buys 30 day with 20 sumthin days left SHOULD I TRADE MY ATRIX AND GET LG THRILL I wont have laptop dock since I bought it with my lovely phone I love my Trix but I loved the demo I has with the thrill...

Have Atrix now for about 3 Months. Longer I have it, the more I like it. Tried out Thrill @ AT&T a few times. About 3 hours total. Ran Quadrant & Smartbench on both, Thrill about 10% faster, prob because of Multi-Channel CPU & RAM. Fast & smooth. Also ran Linpack, 44MFLOPS on Atrix & 69MFLOPS on Thrill. Screen brightness & extreme angle visibility about the same. A little heavier & bigger, but not much. So if u want to try out 3D & have a little bigger screen, then Thrill may b for u. FreddieBoy
I think it really depends on what you want. If 3D does it for you, you will want the Thrill. Personally I wouldn't give up my Atrix unless something really special came along. I believe the Atrix is a more "mature" phone if you catch my drift, while most other phones I consider to be "toys". The Atrix isn't full of gimmicky sh*t, and the hardware hasn't really been tapped into yet to show it's full capabilities, so it will only get better.

Played with a thrill in a store for a while yesterday. Screens cool and 3D is neat but hurt the **** out of my eyes after a few minutes. 2D regular pics were kinda crappy and 3d stuff isn't viewable right off of phone. (3D pics show as 2 side by side images on a computer). Needless to say I bought an ATRIX instead of waiting till Sunday for a Thrill. Cool idea but it wasn't great. Nice gimmick more than anything.

I hav had the thrill for a week and im returning it for the atrix. The 3d is kool but not a selling point. it is fast with the dual channel but it tends to run out of memory pretty quick. I have noticed that the lg stock ui is worst then moto blur. When changing the ui to launcher pro did notice the phone was faster. ONce it is rooted and has cm7 running will be a great phone. Once I heard Lg will be releasing a better version at the bigging of the year decided i should go with the atrix. The battery life is really bad. If yuo use the 3d the battery just goes. i get about 3 to 4 hrs with nomal use and 3d. I would stick with the atrix personally but then again it is your hone so your decision. You still have days left so try it out for a week and see if it makes your day. Im getting 2800 on quadrant and 72 on linpack with the thrill

I'm pretty sure the thrill uses the same style 3D as the new Nintendo 3Ds. Case in point the 3Ds is having horrible sales ( that's why the price went from $250 to like $170 so fast) because it's making a lot of people nauseous (I played one at BB and it was not good lol)
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Are we talking about the phone that I have? Because the 3D the Thrill uses is true stereoscopic 3D at 1080p. Which is why you can shoot a video with the thing, DLNA it over to your *insert brand here* 3D TV and look like what those TVs are intended to display 3D in.
The 3Ds is having crappy sales because Nintendo was grasping at straws to try to keep people buying there crap. It is aweful 3D. At launch it already had a warning to parents to not let kids under five use it for the "potential" sight impairments as they got older. LOL! This is not the Thrill's kind of 3D. The 3Ds was a gimmick for that system.
Understand, I am not targeting anyone specifically with my post but with a phone like this you have to spend more than a few hours in a store with the device to get an idea what's up. I was a manager at a Best Buy location as the mobile manager and moved to manage home theatre.
What I am getting at is I was there long enough to see customers reactions to the first 3D TVs. Like you we kept hearing the whole 3D TV is a gimmick I will wait and see what happens. It is not new technology. It is older technology that had great potential that was waiting for the technology of other devices i.e. hardware, to catch up to its capabilities.
So we go from the big screen at the theatre, to the TV in your living room, to now being available on a cell phone. The Optimus 2x and the Thrill are smokin' fast phones the first to have stereoscopic 3D. The EVO 3D, well I was disappointed with that but its still a decent phone. The Thrill and the others coming will be glitchy and have a few downsides because they are the frontrunners. Honestly, I was not expecting LG to put a phone out like this and have a launch as smooth as its been. The phone is very fast that is not a real argument. The battery life does suck but after enough forum trolling and watching threads and posting etc. I am surprised that we got someone like DesignGears out the gate, reluctantly mind you, LOL but still going after it to start some real development on this device. I found after trying a few apps. and such that I had forgotten about the SuperPower app. made by some of the guys here at XDA. After jacking with how to set SuperPower up on the new beta version I think its like v8 or something; I waited until the battery was at less than 20%. Then did a full uninterrupted charge to 100%. Kicked off SuperPower, unplugged the beast to see what's up. Well that was 9 hours ago. I am sitting at 73% battery left. I have been doing 3D gaming, downloads from the market, music downloads, posts here, and some calls and a crap ton of texts. So I think we are good on the battery. Respectable anyway.
Not to be Captain Obvious but the phone is rooted too. All I am saying is this phone has a tremendous amount of untapped potential that is begging to be unleashed. There is nothing about this phone that says, "gimmick" to me. This phone says I have more power than is necessary in a cell phone but won't be unhappy if you really let me fly.
Get one and really dive into the thing for a week and if you still feel the same about then you can slap me twice and call me Sally. Then go straight to a Best Buy Mobile or where ever you got it and say it was installed with a flux capacitor from the factory by mistake and you want an Atrix instead. Sorry for the wall of text everyone but I don't usually post very often but I had to here. I would hate to see someone miss out on solid technology like the Thrill 4G.

[Q] is 3D the future of smartphones

Hello Guys,
Just wanted to get your inputs.
Is 3D the future for smartphones?
I know nothing is for certain these days as smartphone technology evolves everyday, but is it going to be the standards of future phones?
No trolls and weird answers like "you have to be a psychic to know the future" thingy please.
Thanks

+1 ... but if its "the future" and will "explode" to everywhere isnt for sure.
It all depends on how much/many games and apps go all in and will use it.
Its kinda "lets see for now"... (my2p)
I agree about the tablets. I'd love to be able to Bluetooth-send my 3d pics to a tablet for better viewing. Its just a gimmick for most people but I really enjoy it.

Got rid of my EVO 3D and I do not miss the 3D feature at all. I will be surprised if the next EVO release will even have it.
HTC needs to concentrate on using better 2D screens before they start worrying about 3D.
3D? What 3D? Our phone have 3D capabilities?
I think it definitely is. In the future we will see it evolve to a point where having a screen isn't even necessary (something similar to what people think of when they hear the word hologram). That is obviously way out, but will happen. Glasses free 3D was just an idea in someone's head 10 years ago. As hardware advances, software will dictate the popularity.
It all rides on the back of 3D televisions. If 3D televisions really take off, so will 3D smartphones. As things stand now, it looks like 3D media is going to take off (and take hold). Many movies are now made in 3D and the public is voting at the theater: it's not just a fad. And those 3D movies are movies you can watch on your Evo 3D.
Glasses free: already exists, even in larger sets. I don't think it'll ever be as versatile as the glasses but we have an LG passive set and the glasses are feather light and don't bother your eyes at all. It's nice to be able to get that special event in 3D on the Evo 3D. At school events, it's much easier to pick out your kid in the crowd when you have 3D video.
Maybe not for everyone like HD is, but it certainly has a future. The 3D capabilities of the screen certainly don't seem to hinder the Evo 3D. I happen to think it's one of the better screens out there.
Mike
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I think its going to be a ways out. if it happens at all.
The technology is still in its infancy. Right now you have to find a sweet spot just to be able to see it with out getting eye strain. So far 10% of people i have showed it to have NOT been able to focus on it or view the 3D.
its a neat feature and i hope they expand on the technology but for now i dont see it being such a wide spread event. YET anyway.
Thanks guys for you inputs. keep them coming!
Just like mentioned in a previous posts, I think we'll see hologram-type phones within the next decade. The only reason why the 3D phone was made is because the 3D explosion in theaters. 3D is everywhere--movies, tvs, phones, gaming consoles, video games, magazines. One day, having a 2D will be like having a cassette tape, VHS, standard TV, or a flip phone.

Was the EVO3d a failure?

Why doesnt sprint even sell this anymore? Why has no other phone company put 3d on their phones?
It sux that I can only share 3d videos with other evo 3d users. What happened here?
A short answer would be yes, was a mass failure in the business sence.... The LTE was originally gonna be 3d enabled as well but with lackluster sales of our 3d model that plan was nixed quickly. Too many buyers thought that it was nothing more than a gimmick as did myself . I would much rather had a the 8mp cam on the original EVO as it was indeed a far superior cam.

Wow thats what I suspected. So it was more the public really not caring for this 3d fad.
Exactly.....

It more likely had to do with the 3D capabilities not being utilized. I have so few apps that use the 3D features (less that do it correctly). The EVO 3D is a great phone in many aspects, but never received the 1st party and 3rd party support it deserved.

Content drives phone features. Not enough 3D content really killed the concept. Kind of a failure on HTC's part not get developers on board before the launch, IMHO.
Without numerous 3D devices there is no reason for developers to generate 3D content, without 3D content there is no reason for manufacturers to develope 3D devices. Since only two phones (that I can think of) came equipped with 3D screens in the US, there was never a boom of 3D content, and thus, never a reason for other manufacturers to introduce 3D devices.
HTC, LG and perhaps even Sprint should have offered something in the way of 3D content to attract adopters. However, 3D users were left to forge our own path and we never found a suitable use for 3D besides showing our friends a 3D picture and saying, "Isn't that cool!" That just isn't enough to make 3D a needed addition to a smartphone.
That being said, the Evo 3D is still a great phone and compares favorably to many phones being released today. So why did Sprint decide to give it the axe, especially considering the OG Evo lived well on into the life-span of the 3D? I would say LTE has a lot to do with it. With Sprint moving to LTE there was no reason to jeep the 3D on-board with the arrival of the Evo 4G LTE.
Both WiMAX and LTE (or even 3G) were never a problem for me since I don't have them in my area, or will any time soon unless I jump to Verizon, so for now I'll stick with the 3D nobody seems to want, I still think it is a great phone.
I kinda went on for a bit there, huh? lol.

Fantastic post, I completely agree with this. 3D just never really caught on (at least in the US) for a variety of reasons. I'm sad that they sacrificed a better camera for 3D, but what can you do?
I would not call it a failure. It's an epic failure. What a waste of 200 bucks. Oh wait I got it for free.

So would you say this phone is now a rare artifact that could be worth $$$ one day? Or just another paperweight?

I got mine for 10 bucks. Otherwise I'd never had bought one. I like everything about the phone, but in my opinion, the 3d part was a waste of development.

I agree as well. I also think that 3D on the unit was pushed without a big "this phone works in 2D just like any other phone" disclaimer. Many of my non-phone-savvy friends had heard of the Evo3D, but thought it was full time 3D. If they would have sold the phone sans 3D, I think it would have had a much better outcome. It was the best phone at the time as far as hardware is concerned.

Sure, I'm still waiting to cash in on my StarTAC.
I got mine for free as well. Just came from asurion yesterday. I came from the epic 4G.

Also not everybody was able to view 3D comfrotably. Some people had issues with headaches or nausea or simply couldnt find the spot for 3D to work right.
Took me a while to get mine in the right comfort zone..
Im on the eVO LTE but kept my 3D as a back up.
Been waiting for ICS so i can see how much better it will run with that.
I think the device its self is great, but the 3D part never got momentum..

My opinion is. The 3d feature was a failure not the actual phone.
I love my evo 3d its performance is great and the screen is amazing.
when i bought mine for 100 buckets i didn't care much about the 3d feature but more on the performance.
I don't know... I came from a CDMA Hero. For the first few weeks, my 3D felt like the most powerful phone in the world to me. Now, I'm constantly getting annoyed with things. No official support for CM9. None of the custom ROMs really offer what I want (because I want a functional CM9 ROM...) and now the Sense 3.6 ICS ROMs give me trouble with my university's Wifi security, so I can't use Wifi at all on-campus. With Sprint's crappy network and signal penetration, I'm stuck on 1X when I am standing by a window. It's very, very frustrating.
I really wish there weren't 18 months left on my family's contract. I'd love to switch to a GSM provider. I honestly wish I had a GS3 or even a GS2. Used a friend's GS2. I could see tons of stuff running in the notification area and stuff all over the homescreen. It was running like butter. I was seriously jealous. I don't even want to think about how nice a GS3 would be at this point.
My 3D will get me through the next 18 months... but I'm definitely going to recommend my family switches to a better carrier.

Y'all bought a 3D for a Reason???
W0W :cyclops:
I walked into the Sprint store with a 4G the got run over by a car and there wuz a party. The guest of honor waa 3D - how could I sleeze outa honoring the guest of honor.
Last thing I cared about wuz 3D pics. A camera button - epic.
I luv the phone, sans the gimmic. and yes iTz, I've grown to luv the 3D pics too.
Now ICS without sense 4 iz criminal HTC/Sprint. The phone can handle it and U Oit2us -
Well I for one like my 3D and have no desire to jump ship until the LTE network hits my area (Probally 2025) or a 3D LTE EVO hits the market. I use my 3D and my mhl adapter to play 3D movies onto my 3d tv. I currently have limited 4g access at my Home so until that stops I'm pretty happy
