Don't know how I can be to tell you the truth... Okay example:
Dark screen and the capacitive buttons are lit, above the HOME button you see a little shine of light, it is coming from the capacitive button. This is my second Vibrant phone(last one the 3g radio wasn't working properly) and the last one also had this issue, I checked the one at the store and it also had this, but it could just be that the shipments that the store got were all faulty of sorts, do you have this issue as well?
Is this a serious problem for you?
No but I am rather curious

Picture? Description isn't making a lot of sense.
okay.... I cannot get a picture with a camera at all... but I can try and explain a little more...
You know how the soft keys have lights to light them up in darkness? Well one of the ones from the HOME soft key seems to be showing some sort of light during dark screens outside of the button. Navigate to a black screen, now look above the Home soft key, mines has a little illumination from the soft key itself, I am wondering if it is too bright or something? I only see it during dark black screens but I just want to know if this is an issue.
Oh, I get it .. The screen itself glows, above the Home key? I just tried, max brightness setting and a black screen - no glow on mine. Manufacturing defect of some sort or you have better eyes than me.
Tilt the device so that the head phone jack is facing you, look at the soft keys, if it isn't there I might return mines because it makes things a whole lot different when watching a video

i think he meant theres a backlight leak from the softkey buttons

Angling it like that.. Only a very narrow sliver of light, only visible at a very precise angle. Definitely nothing I would encounter through normal usage, including watching a video.
Just checked the wife's Vibrant, slightly bigger spot of light but still a pretty narrow angle. There's definitely some variation going on here, but neither of ours are visible from normal viewing angles. If yours is interfering with video watching, I'd say that's a defect.
Yeah most likely, I can see mines... I think I just might return it and get a G2 this is my second Vibrant and I really don't want to go through another one, hopefully I can get my money back. Thanks for your help

I have the same thing. It's not that bad, but I know it's there. Doesn't bother me much, but it's there.
I just checked mine as well and there is a very very small spot at a specific angle. It does not cast enough light onto the screen to be noticiable even in the darkest situation.
Curious what symptoms you had on your first Vibrant with 3G. My 3G is horrible. When I had a G1 a few months ago I had much better 3g. Now, even if I get a 3G signal, I either can't surf at all or it is slower than Edge. I have resorted to leaving my phone set to 2G only. I figured it was a problem either in my area or with the Vibrant In general. Your comment makes me wonder if maybe there could be something else at work.
As far as the light on your screen, I can only barely see that when looking from above as described, definitely not any other time. If this is your second phone, it may have been refurbished and not put together exactly correctly.
As far as mine, I think I'm going to go to the tmobile store and compare my 3G to the demo phone they have on display.

I do have huge light leak onto my screen from the buttons. It is most apparent coming from the home button. That one makes a streak straight up when the screen is black. Like a searclight... But, I don't notice it when the screen is drawn. Definitely a manufacturing issue, but not a serious one. I am also considering heading to the G2 when it comes out. Still miss my G1's keyboard even though I give Swype FULL PROPS for a great virtual kb.

can you post a pic please?
my first one did took it back. second one is decent.
Between light leakage and dead pixels I would say there are a few with cosmetic issues out there. I had to take my first phone back in for an exchange because it had a dead pixel in the right hand corner and also had dust underneath the camera lens. Looked over my replacement in the store and checked for dead pixels with the Dead Pixel Test app and it was fine. Failed to notice this eye sore near my search button. When capacitive buttons are lit up this thing is hard not to notice. Called Customer Service and they are supposed to call me tomorrow to let me know about yet another exchange...
I have some too. It's nothing to care about tho, my buttons and 2D-3D switch are solid unlike some who are having over sensitivity issues. If I am anal about my phone id be spending too much time with sprint customer service and less time enjoying a great device. If i complained I'd probably get a phone with other issues. I have warranty and insurance, if something REALLY goes wrong, ill just get a replacement. My real goal is not to drop this baby
In your picture, the white "dot" near your search button...is that where the light sensor is on your hardware? Mine is located just above and to the left of my "back" button...that would be weird if it was actually in two different locations. Or is it just a reflection from somewhere?
...just to be clear, I am referring to the first picture that was posted.

Light sensor is always located on the top of the device.
On the 3vo its to the right of the HTC logo on top of your phone
From working in a plastic injection molding company it looks as if the white glowing spec is where it wasn't fully painted or molded (aka short shot) before the layer of glass was placed over it... Causing a leak of light
All speculation don't qoute me on it

what HW version do you have? I have some small light leakage at the bottom too BUT i think the big thing different from the evo4g screens is that the screens are very tight, when you try to push them down they dont budge. With the 4G you could pinch the screen and the light leakage would go away some. With the 3d thats not the case.
Now as far as your 2d/3d button. how is it play wise front to back? mine wiggles a bit front to back but is very solid top to bottom(direction to switch to 2d-3d).
Guys,
Use screen filter from the marker. Set transparency to 100% it won't filter anything but will dim the capacative buttons to almost off. Just a band aid for now but it will help.
No light leakage here, but I headache a case that would hide out I'd there was, so for right now I'm not worried.

That is exactly what mine looks like. I'm using that screen filter app and trying to forget that it's there for now. I'll make a switch if anything near the end of the 30 days. What I'm really trying to get used to after my nova screen EvO4G is the yellowish hue over everything. Seems like an Epson panel all over again
HTC just needs to dim those capacative Buttons down. No reason for it to be that bright. So annoying useing it at night/ in the dark.
That would be awesome if someone could write an app to control the light of the capacitive buttons. I mean if screen filter can shut them on/off....
i got a little bit, and although id rather it not be there, i really dont mind it at all...
reason is, that unlike the one the OG EVO had which looked like a mess because its random spots where it leaks where it looks ugly, but on the E3D it looks like a slight (very very slight) glowing ring around the bottom which doesnt look that bad IMO
It's not light bleed LOL those are so bright its a reflection . So don't worry not light leaking .

I love my new DNA, my only gripe is some light leakage problems.
When I'm viewing a dark or black image or anything, the three capacitive buttons leak light onto the screen. Is this a big issue and should I consider exchanging the device?

Hmmm, so it appears to be an issue affecting some other users also, so now I decide if its worth it to try and tell the VZW guys... Thank you!
I am in the same boat. Although I am impressed with HTC's response to many of their trademark issues with the release of this device, there is still some light leak at the bottom left corner of the screen on my DNA. I did notice though, the light leak I am seeing on mine is still present when the capacitive back lighting is off. I believe mine is from the actual screens back lighting. These little issues do bug the sh*t out of me, but it is much improved from their previous models. Contemplating trading up to see if I can luck out and get a better model...
So I just picked up the DNA today. Loving it! However, I just noticed that I'm seeing light bleed through on the bottom, just below the capacitive buttons when they're lit up. Anyone have this?? Really disliking this!
Yeah. Pretty common.
It is really easy to fix though and you can do it yourself. Unless you want to keep exchanging them and hoping you find one, this would be a better way.
Go to your local auto parts store and pick up this:
http://www.apmengineparts.com/82180.html?productid=82180&channelid=FROOG
Get the smallest one you can because you are only using a bit.
Take a toothpick and apply it to the bottom of the glass where it meets the plastic. Try to push it into the crack, if possible. Let it sit for a few seconds and then take a paper towel and wipe it off along the crack. DON'T get it into the usb port!
Let it dry for a few hours and you are good as gold. It also has the bonus of increasing water resistance and keeping dust out.
Mine didn't have that at all. I guess I got lucky. I do have a small spot almost dead center on the screen that looks like a bluish smudge though. You can only notice it on a white background. It's musky annoying but faint enough to live with.

Hmm I guess it isn't something to be concerned about then.
I checked mine again right now in the office restroom with lights off and the phone screening an entirely black image; it does not have any light leakages at its full brightness, but there are two centered light spots triggered by the capacitive buttons that are only visible at the lowest brightness level.
Therefore presumably, turning off the capacitive button lights will eliminate the seemingly light leakages, as they do not seem to be defects caused by the LCD panel itself. But if such a leakage is glowed anywhere else but about the two centered areas just above the capacitive buttons, such as any corners or left/right/upper edges, then it would indeed be a sign of a defective unit.

Well in case nobody noticed when the lights are on and you are in a dark room and you tilt the top of the device away from you, when you get to a certain angle you can actually see the light from the buttons because of how the glass is curved. This will appear on every DNA because of the glass. so if you have light coming from BELOW the buttons make sure its not this that you are seeing.
I only have light bleeding through at a certain angle. I may pick up some of that stuff though.

In my case, its coming from the seam between the curved glass and the trim.

Yeah I'm still torn about what to do. Kinda want to relock/ruu and exhange but what if the new one has something different wrong with it. This one works great, the bleeding is just visual and only in a very dark room so might just do what adryn did and seal it with some gasket maker

No more light bleed and increased resistance to dust and water.

You think that's really what they're seeing? You can't physically stop that without changing the shape of the glass. i prefer the continuous curve over a slight refraction you can't ever see.

I'm certain (in my case) that its the glass and the trim.
Nothing a little black silicone doesn't fix. The shape of the glass is not the problem. The problem lies near the capcitive keys where the glass meets the glossy trim. They are two different pieces.

That's true, and for me it's fairly noticable on the top left, along with under the two front facing cameras there is bleed as well for me. This is my second phone.
Could be like the g2x lol
It's definitely there in the top left corner, but there's no way it would bother me enough to go exchange it.
Same here, if only there was a way to invert the color from BLACK text on White backgroud, to WHITE Text on Black Background. The fade would not be noticeable.
I went through 2 V10s and ended up returning both and going back to my M8. Basically what I noticed was slot of backlight/screenbleed issues when in immersive mode of an app. Like a book reader for example. If the background color is white, up at the top of the screen there would be a gray/black hue leaking through.
Of course once you notice it, you see it in other applications that go into immersive mode. I think there is something happening where the 2 displays meet at the top when immersive mode kicks in.
It's mostly only noticeable when the screen is like 60% brightness or less.
Unfortunately that was a deal breaker for me, even though the rest of the phone was great.
What sucks is that I'm going to have to fight a restocking fee for this problem even though t-mobile store reps saw the problem as well

I was thinking in maybe doing the same but getting maybe the HTC m9 or anything other than the Samsungs. Hate them. I will be going today to get my third new exchange since I still have seven more days left. Gets very annoying all this screen bleed issues. This phone is so beast in all other aspects. Camera, sound quality, and love the software but not as much to stock like nexus line.
I have a post here with dead pixels issues, the replacement T-Mo sent me not only had dead pixels as well, but a terrible bleed where the two displays meet. It is only noticeable when you look at the display from an angle, for example phone on the table and you have a light background you see a dark spot there, once I noticed that its driving me crazy. LG quality control is a POS IMO. This phone rocks, but is plagued by stupid QC issues.
There is nothing you can do. All phones will have the "second screen bleed" due to how it's designed.
There are two backlights. First is the normal backlight that lights up the entire display (there is no "second screen" - it's a single LCD panel). Then, there's the secondary backlight - a single white LED on the left edge of the "second screen." This single secondary backlight LED is injecting light through the left edge of the second screen and is not attached to the main backlight diffuser, which is why it lights the screen so unevenly. There are certain times when that secondary LED is on and when it is off. When it is on, it adds extra light near the left edge of the screen, which makes the notifications in that area brighter.
Try this. Turn on the Camera app and observe the buttons that appear on the second screen. Notice that the left-most (or bottom, if you hold it horizontally) button is NOT brighter at all? That's because the second backlight turns off when the camera app is running, and you only see the main screen backlight, which is even. Exit the camera app and you'll see the second backlight turn on and the bleed return. Open the camera app again and you'll see the bleed disappear, as the second backlight turns off.
Do another test. Hold the phone at an angle so the bleed from the second backlight is clearly visible, then go into the settings for the second screen, and turn it off while watching the left-most edge of the second screen - you'll see the "bleed" suddenly disappear, because the secondary backlight turns off (even though the main backlight is on). Turn the second screen back on while watching the left edge, and you'll see the bleed come back as the secondary backlight turns back on.
Yet another way to see it - power off the phone, then power it on while watching the left edge of the second screen. During initial boot, it will look perfectly even, no bleed, because the secondary backlight is off. But half-way through the boot process, the secondary backlight turns on, and you see "bleed."
Now, when the main screen is off, the ONLY thing lighting the second screen is the secondary backlight, so ALL you see is bleed (since the main backlight is off) which looks horrible.
The reason you don't see bleed at all in TWRP is because TWRP doesn't know that there is a second backlight and therefore it doesn't turn it on, since it doesn't know how.
To get rid of the "brighter left side" problem when the main screen is on, all LG has to do is issue a software update that turns off the secondary backlight when the main screen is on - I'm surprised they overlooked this obvious problem.
And here's the kicker - you know why you don't see the second screen bleed on the demo units in stores? Because the Retail Mode app turns the secondary backlight off, just like the camera app.
here's my issue, called again to T/mo and they're sending another RMA..Apart from that am having a defective proximity sensor...will update when the "new" phone arrive
That's not screen bleed. That's where the edge of the lcd panel meets the edge of the bezel around the front facing cameras. It's an unavoidable shadow.
I'm really picky about my phones, especially the screens, but I think you're honestly expecting the impossible. They can't NOT make a shadow there, given the arrangement of the secondary screen backlight and the camera bezel.
If that's your biggest complaint about this phone and the screen, then I think you're being too picky.

I know am picky, we all should be with a $600+ smartphone, in the highest end gamma quality control must be precise. Apart from that I already posted a dead pixels thread and this one has dead pixels too...take a magnifying glass crank the brightness to 100% and watch very carefully in a dark, this is my second V10 and a third is on the way
Now dead Pixels are not acceptable. But that shadow will always be there no how many times you exchange it.
