Wi-Fi Hotspot Solution for Noobs (Connectify+SeventhGate) - HTC EVO 3D

Trying to make my notebook a wifi hotspot for my Evo 3D but taking down by the unfriendly Connectify.
It just kept obataining IP address and sometimes it got connected but couldn't open any page due to network error.
I'm just a noob and don't wanna dealing with something advanced like wpa_suppliment blah blah blah. Till then, I found SeventhGate after googling hard.
The steps are so easy like abc. Yeah, that's noob's way. Here are the steps:
1. Install Connectify on your notebook.
2. Activate your notebook network connection (LAN, dial-up modem, etc.) and its wifi.
3. Run Connectify, fill out "Hotspot Name" and "Password" and also choose "Internet" connection mode.
4. Click "Start Hotspot" on Connectify and then just stop it.
5. Download SeventhGate at http://seventhgate.codeplex.com/releases/view/81960 and install it.
6. Run SeventhGate, choose the active "Network Connections" (or one of them if you have more than 1 internet connection) which you want to share via wifi
7. Fill out "Network Name", "Password" (min. 8 characters), and "Clients limit"
8. Click "Start"
9. Activate your Evo 3D wifi, connect to the "Network Name" you've made before and enter the password
10.Happy browsing! with your droid and notebook at once with only one internet connection!
Note:
- If you ask me why I don't uninstall Connectify?
+ Because sometimes SeventhGate can't recognize any active network connection eventhough you've already activated it.
When this occurs, close SeventhGate, run Connectify, "Start Hotspot", after that stop it.
Re-run SeventhGate and the active network connections are available again on the menu.
I don't know why, at least it works.

really? really really sorry then for my bad English. I just want to make every step clear enough, I think I've done the opposite. In a nutshell, I can say the point of this thread is just installing Connectify & SeventhGate on notebook, SeventhGate as the main Wi-Fi hotspot program and Connectify as the connection finder, just in case.

So, this thread is about setting up a wifi hotspot on a notebook so you can connect your phone to it? Seems a little a$$ backwards to me and I am guessing that 99.9% of people on this forum will never have to use this as that 99.9 percent have data/wifi for their phone. But, cool solution non the less, I guess.

Absolutely right. In my country (Indonesia), most smartphones are GSM and the data connection can be categorized expensive yet slower than CDMA, I posted this thread to try helping kinda people like in my country dreaming cheap high speed internet, although it lacks mobility.

I had problems connecting with "open" network type in connectify. I use the secure "WPA-P2SK" to share using connectify and it works fine om my PC at least.
And there is "Intel My WiFi technology" which works too provided you have a supported hardware.

in that case..you can mhotspot dude..it is PORTABLE

share 3G via WiFi?

I thought I saw a .cab file here somewhere that would allow you to bridge the 3G/EDGE connection to the WiFi connection so I can share my 3G over WiFi to laptop or whatever.
Anyone seen this? I cant remember the name, thought it was something like WMBridge or something.
Thanks

internet connection sharing will allow you to share your 3G over bluetooth or USB to your laptop !!
and now that I think about it you can almost certainly go through the arduous and difficult task of getting activesync to connect over an adhoc wifi connection, once that is done you will be able to use the phone as a 3G modem for your laptop.

u can do it tht way but its hard, and requires a registry hack, which to be fair doesnt work all that well, disconns after a couple of mins at best, bluetooth is the way to go if u want wireless connecton, although i use the lead for security, u can use the 3g conn as a modem, but then if u like us use tmob wb and walk then u cnt use ur data package.
hope this helps

The app is called wmWifiRouter. Looks like they just came out with a new version the 10th. Forget bluetooth, its not secured at all, and only lets you share with one device. With wmwifirouter you can share with many. See the link below.

excellent that is exactly what I was looking for, I will play with it today and see if I can get it to work.
Thanks

Should be a simple matter of copying the exe to your device and running it. It takes care of all the registry settings, starting up Internet Sharing, keeping the connection alive, and with the latest version you can even put the unit to sleep and your connection will stay alive. About the only thing it doesn't do is set up a peer-to-peer profile with a fixed IP address, but the thread above walks you through that. Make sure you set the profile to use WPA encryption (NOT WEP or 'open') and set a password.

I finally got around to trying this and have had no luck. I followed the directions as best as I could tell. Anyone verify if this works on the Athena? I used to have the method set up manually but hadn't set it up again since updating to AP3.0. This would be much handier... if works!

The directions are confusing because the newer method was grafted onto the same thread as the older method. So it's hard to tell what's what. I put about an hour into this but made no progress. The exe file doesn't appear to do anything on the Athena...

Sorry, just saw your response as I wrote mine. Here is what I did:
1. set up an ad hoc network on my Athena. IP address 192.168.0.1 (another place saide 192.168.0.7--tried both)
2. Set up on my client (MacBook Pro). A connection was established.
3. Ran the exe file -- nothing happened. One comment said to deactivate the network before running. I did this in various degrees with no success.
4. Also opened up the Internet Sharing applet and tried to connect manually -- "USB cable is not connected."
Clearly I'm missing something here. It would be very handy to have this capability. Can you clarify??
Not sure why you are having a problem - I unzipped the zip, transfered the exe to the athena and it ran on the first try after first setting up the ad-hoc wifi connection (settings, connections, wi-fi, network adapters tab, IEEE..., use specific IP address in the 192.168.x.x range; then go to the other tab and set up an ad-hoc connection).
I had an even worse experience. Everytime I ran the exe, my Athena locked up, needing a complete reset each time.
I gave up in the end .
I have got other methods to work using Mortscipts, but it does seem like something that would be well worth someones time sorting out for the good of us all.
Have you tried the latest version of wmWifiRouter? The developer released a new version of it earlier this month. Its on version 0.8 now.

[Q] Connect to a 802.1x EAP network?

Hello XDA devlopers,
I'm trying to connect to a WPA EAP network in my school, or a 802.1x EAP network as my mini pro regocnizes it.
when trying to connect it asks me for a password/password consisting of 8 letters/numbers.
i have tried using the same methood we do for our laptops we use at our school wich is a Unique SchoolID and a password. but that doesn't work since it want whatever i write to match the first line of password.
However, when just writing something random like 8 number 1 digits it goes on and asks for a connection type were i can choose from EAP, WPA and etc where i chose EAP because thats what im guessing our school uses (i'm no network technichan so i dont know anything about wireless networks at all, otherwise i probably wouldn't post here for help lol.)
But when i have choosed the connection type it tries to connect for like half a second and then stops and goes back to sleeping mode or searching for new potentional wi-fi/wireless networks.
Please note that my phone is a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro device with default 2.1 sony ericsson stock rom and no root, aswell as the standard app to connect to wi-fi / wireless networks. (Settings > Wifi & Mobile networks > Wi-Fi)
If i have written this in the wrong thread or have written something not understandable please PM me and i will try to correct the text.

Joel

I would suggest looking up on your school's website to see if there are instructions for setting up the internet on your mobile device. I would assume they have instructions for different platforms.
I struggled to get it working at my school in which i had to get a certificate installed and blah blah blah. I can't remember if i got it working or not, it's been a while. I remember hitting a problem with WPA2 authentication on the mini pro. Hopefully you can get it working.

But I've talked with our computer technichan team, but they said that they dont care and wont give support to anything else than our laptops, i also checked our schools website page and there were no instructions on how to connect, not even with our computers. only found a page telling us to visist the computer technichans if we experienced trouble.
So sadly, they wont support or help me with this. Any other suggestions?
Edit: i went there again and had a talk with a diffrent person, who seemed to have an android phone aswell, but he said that a certificate is needed to connect, atleast for the laptops in our school, but sadly he couldn't give it out because it was aginst their rules to do so. He said that he used a non-protected guest wi-fi that is aviable for our school, but to connect that you need a username and password aswell, and he couldn't give me one unless i was a guest at the school. And what iv'e heard about the guest one is that its suckey anyway so if there is any other solution i would be very happy.
Edit 2:
I have been using ubuntu on my school laptop before and got the wi-fi working without installing any certificate, but then i just selected to use EAP-PK2 something when editing settings on how to connect to the wifi with the ubuntu laptop and then filling the boxes with my schoolID login credentials and got it working.
And Android is based on linux so there should be some workaround for this?
Very Thankful for any answers about this.

I dont think it is possible for me to set up and proxy for the schools network.
They only have blocked one port and i think thats port 22 or something for security reasons, no other pages are blocked afaik.
Im starting to need the wi-fi access at school badly, i think i could pay whoever came up with a workaround or solution that works lol.
i'll post a fix tommorrow, i am currently trying it myself and it seems to work quite good!
please make a backup before you try.
it worked fine on mine though
802.1x working again!
hope it works for you!
you will loose draft N ability unfortunately
so only 54 mbit

still waiting for the CM7 for mini pro to become 100% stable for everyday use. I use my phone alot and with a rebooting phone or non working phone is a bad idea lol
Also make sure to download telekom global root cert.
Its not installed by default
Its listed on the webpage

Its often used for 802 connections

Even is an old thread I see no point in opening a new one.
So, I bought android (4.2.2) mini pc and created a pc out of it, but I am having trouble with connecting to students network cause it has 802.1x authentication, and you login with faculty username and password.
On windows we use Securew2 software and that solves problems, but when connecting on android I cant find any options to select EAP or TTLS authentication, anyone has a clue?

[Q] Reverse Tethering Through USB Cable On Android 2.3.3

I'm asking this question on BEHALF of MYSELF and OTHERS. Can you SHARE your LAPTOP or PC's connection with your android phone.
For example lets say i wanted to play a gameloft game but i need to download additional data through Wifi, is there a way for me to use my Laptop or Pc's connection through my phone so i can download the game for my phone.
If anyone has a solution to this question please make your answer VERY DETAILED
I am on a XPERIA X10, Please reply or answer THIS QUESTION
Advice:
I've Googled about this problem. I have data plan in my phone and no WiFi at home. Many people like me also use this way to get connection. But what they got were "FAILED". ONLY WAY = connect TO WiFi (can't say every game, but maybe 1% can use reverse tether method)
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
melvinchng Same here i dont have Wifi in my house, there certian games that wont download with my carrier network and insist on me downloading through wifi. I ALREADY know how to download GAMELOFT GAMES that require wifi only but it is very inconsistant and dodgy on my x10.
Theres a wifi signal on my laptop i can connect to the but the signal on android phones are so bad i just cant connect to the router.
If your pc has wifi(I know you don't have wifi in your house) you can download and use the app connectify for windows
If your pc has a working wifi card (with drivers installed of course), then you can share its connection via wifi. If you have windows 7, you can use "Connectify" or "Virtual Router". If you have windows xp and above (on a dell pc. Don't know if it works on others), then you can use "Dell Laptop to Hotspot Converter".
there is a guide on my device's forum about this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229558
for the step where it says "bridged local area connection and LG adaptor," you must find the equivalent of the lg adaptor that applies to your phone (if that makes sense). other than that, i think it should work.
What you are looking for is called "usb-internet pass-through" correct? Alot of custom roms already have it as a feature in the wifi setting, next to wifi hotspot. Im not familiar with your device or whether you are rooted but its pretty handy. Can also work as a wireless card, as in turn wifi setting on the phone and plug it into a desktop that doesnt have a wifi card and presto, wifi through your phone thats through a wireless router so its not eating up your data quota and much faster than the 3g on your phone. [Q] Wireless Tethering Issues

Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

You may be on to something here. I'm going to try to wifi tether on 3G to see what happens.
I'm finding tethering is better with 3g than 4g for some reason.

So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Been having similar problems. Downloaded the latest beta of Android wifi Tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list and everything works now.

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

ATTENTION:
Our records indicate there may already be an account for this device or that the incorrect network provider was selected in the Connection Manager.
You will need to select the correct network provider from the list of available networks in the Connection Manager.
The Connection Manager is currently looking for any new network providers that may have been recently added. Please wait at least 3 minutes for this update to take place prior to performing the steps outlined below.
Note: If you still experience issues obtaining a subscription on your network provider of choice, it may be necessary to install an updated version of your Connection Manager.
If using the Intel PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility:
Perform a "Wide Area Scan" to select the correct network provider. "
( and there is a big picture here with some signal and whatever ) then it says follow these instruction ???
"
Select Disconnect to disconnect from the current network provider.
Select Show Network List or "Show network list" to perform a Wide Area Scan.
Select Search Networks to search for available networks.
Select the network to which you are subscribed.
Select Connect to connect to your subscribed network.
Refresh or restart your browser to access the internet.
Follow the instructions of your connection manager to scan for additional networks:
Disconnect from the current network provider.
Follow the instructions of your connection manager to search for all available networks.
Select the network to which you are subscribed.
Follow the instructions of your connection manager to connect to your subscribed network.
Refresh or restart your browser to access the internet. "

What on earth?
On your Sprint Evo 3D, you're trying to use
- Clear WiMax 4G (not Sprint's)
- on the Boost Mobile network
- with a Comcast modem
- to play video games
This makes absolutely no sense -- slow down, son! What exactly are you trying to do here?
If you mean you just want to get your 4G hotspot working (regardless of provider), you obviously shouldn't use the built in Sprint hotspot (even the hacked one). You're going to have to screw around with Wifi Tether for Root (google it) or Barnacle, potentially in ad-hoc mode. Some tools (including the official hotspot tool) and some tethering modes pretty much tell the WiMax tower to assign a new IP to the broadcast, effectively giving your computer or laptop a distinct IP from the phone. This is why they don't work, and it's also how the company finds out. Clear probably sees this secondary IP request produced by the tethering app, notes that it isn't the IP configuration you set up with them (or paid for), and blocks your service.
Your solution? Get the phone working again, then use a different form of tethering or a different mode. Ad-hoc mode (Barnacle) and wired tether (PDANet) are practically guaranteed to work, unless Clear has a way of sniffing packets for routing protocols.

So what im running is HTC evo 3d on Boost Mobile and i added a Clear account its fast but when i tether it wont let me gives the error ? ive read your suggestions/instructions and im a bit lost so any more help you can provide is cool! PLEASE ADVISE! thanks
just use barnicle tether or wifi tether
they work fine with phones running on clear.
I know thats not a seamless integration but you can try custom roms as well....
I usually just use wifi tether it seems to be better for "boosted" phones
esp the ones i get on clear

well thanks for the help but i am running custom thats all ill run! im on Steal25 now and ive used the android tether before and it just seems not to like me ive always had better success with the hacked sprint hotspot! but i am desperate as if i cant get it fixed then its no purpose to have the clear account as i got comcast at home but when on the go i'm N THE NEED FOR SPEED! also as far as Barnacles it's always worked great but i guess i forgot about it Either Way i am glad for the responses and input to this problem
PS
can you tell me what you connected your phone to clear as ??? mine is labeled a intel handheld device ? and when i hit the page it says something about INTEL??? please advise
The Sprint WiFi tether does not work with 4G (clear). You'll need to use WiFi tether or the others. Wi-Fi tether works great and it's free. Check the boxes that say MSS clamping and routing fix (something like that).
