Anyone find a way to have custom ringtone per contact, particularly for incoming SMS? Feel kinda silly not figuring it out..
Can it not be done through the edit contact page? That's how it is on other phones, though I don't know that I've seen a way to get custom sms notifications. Would be sweet!
Yep. Look at the contact in the People app and click on Ringtone.

Don't you guys pester my locksmith, by the way.
I did the drag-and-drop approach. Connect the EVO to your windows pc laptop/desktop using the usb cable. Wait 5-10 seconds and a “Choose a connection type” window will show on the phone screen. Select “Media sync”. Then you’ll be able to view folders/files in your phone device (like an external hard drive). Double-click “phone” folder (this is your EVO), and you’ll see various folders (Music, Ringtones, Notifications, Download, etc). You can now copy a music file or picture file stored in your laptop/desktop and paste it to one of these folders…depending on what you’re using it for. After you're done, disconnect the phone from the computer.
Go to EVO's Settings, then Sound, then Phone ringtone, and select your ringtone. (You can also do this via Music app).
For Messages app, open it, go to Menu on top right corner, then Settings, then Notifications, then Notification sound, and select your ringtone.
You can specify an inbound call ringtone per person, but this does not apply to the TXT msg settings that I am aware of.

I don't know if it works on ICS but try Ringo Lite for assigning ringtones, SMS tones and text tones.
handcent
SMS Sounds is a lightweight app that is specifically for setting SMS tones for contacts.

goto contact/edit/ringtone pick ringtone then save
for sms/mms go in to app press menu(3 dot buttons on top right)settings/notifiction/notifiction sound/choose sound you wish to use for incoming sms/mms(if your looking to individual sounds for each contact i dont believe you can do that)
With GoSMS and Handcent you can set individual sms ringtones. The third party apps provide tons of customization for messaging.

I have searched the internet a few times over the last few weeks and find only the same old, dead threads with poor solutions or seemingly good solutions which have been pulled from the market (such as app called "missed call"), and nothing new, so here goes:
It is a documented Android phenomenon: we hear nothing when a text message comes in while we're on the phone. There is no LED so glancing at the phone from time to time (I use headset) doesn't cut it. I have to try to remember to wake the screen to check from time to time and sometimes I miss time-sensitive messages.
Are there any solutions that I have missed? I don't really want to go the route of BLN, or 3rd party SMS app; I may have to I know. But I do hope there is a way to make this shiny new top-notch device do a basic thing that has been accomplished by every device I have owned since this one

If a Motorola Timeport 280 from 2001 can beep when I receive an SMS.....
You did not say what exactly the solutions you tried, so I'm not sure if you already did this: go to Settings > Call > Call alert > Alerts on call and set it to sound, or any of your preferred settings.

Oddly enough, i never saw this before. I must have looked in the Sound settings menu 10 times. I'll try it out, thanks. If that fixes it, i wonder why it was off by default in the first place
Edit: It works, thank you.
You're welcome! I'm still very new to all this (android and the SGS2), so I'm looking around my phone, playing with it, trying to figure out things.
On a related note, do you know how to get custom alerts for text messages? I can't figure it out, and I doubt samsung took out that simple feature that's been around since I can remember.

I can see that, but I cannot use other ringtones besides what's pre-installed in the device. That is, if I want to use an MP3 music file as my SMS alert notification, I cannot add that file to the list of SMS alert notifications. Is it really like that?

Ah ok, so what you have to do is go in your "sd card" the built-in memory, not "external sd" and create a folder called "Audio". Inside here you make 3 more folders: "Alarms" "Notifications" & "Ringtones"
You put whatever you want for sms/email, etc in the Notifications folder, it should show up in the list for choosing your sms sound.
Thanks! It took me a while to get back to this thread (been really busy). It works!
Hi, i´m at 4.0.3 with AOSP contacts, and i sherched all the menus, but i didn,t found where i set ringtone to a contact group!
Anyone can help me?
Thanks!
Group ringtones
Can anyone tell me, how to set group ringtones?
I have (in contacts) a group called Coworkers with 11 contacts. I have assigned a ringtone to that group, saved it and in group the ringtone is correct.
But when I go to the contacts and look my coworker, it has the 'default' ringtone defined... not the one, which is set in group 'Coworkers'.
And also, when he call me, the default ringtone rings, not the one, which I set for the group 'Coworkers'.
I have tried with other groups also (family, friends,...), nothing... when somebody calls me, it's always the 'default' ringtone....
I have searched the Google, XDA forums, but haven't found nothing useful...
Oh, this is on my SGS2 with JB NeatRomLite v4.0....

Weird, it works fine for me, following the steps you describe. Although, the group ringtone doesn't display on the individual contact; the individual will still display the default ringtone, but for me it rang the group ringtone anyways. Every time.

What do you mean by that? In group settings I have the ringtone, I want....
As the title states...(minus the calling capabilities of course)
Thanks for the info.

If you refer to google voice for text messages and calls and not google voice search as some people get confused, then yes it works pretty well, but for make calls it does not work with other apps like groove IP , gvoice and so because of the lack of the proper drivers for the mic and possibly speaker too.

Awesome thanks....yes I will just be using for the texting. When the NT is in sleep mode will it still notify you of an incoming message or do you have to manually check it? Also, when rooted do you get audible notifications for new messages and/or emails like you do on a regular Android tab or phone?

yes you can get audible notifications, and the notfications will not show up while nook is sleeping once you wake it up wifi will wake up too in few seconds and then you will have to wait until next refresh of google voice to check for new texts to finally show up in your notification status bar, i think it refresh every 5min but not sure and there is not option to set the refreshing time in google voice.

The only problem is that you cannot access your contacts list (since the Contacts application is not installed).

Nop, you can use your contacts while you sync them with your gmail account:

I've successfully texted using Google Voice with the NT (sent and received). I use GMail, but recently started using Contapps for viewing and text messaging/e-mailing my contacts on the tablet. It also has Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc integration. So far so good.
No go on the phone calling though.
I installed Handcent again and I like it but miss the old text notification that would go across the top of the lockscreen. I could tap on that and unlock the phone and go right to the message instead of unlocking it, pulling down the task bar, and tapping the notification. Is there any way to just use Handcent as the app but keep the stock popup notifcations?

I receive the text notifications across the top of the screen with handscent..there is a setting in handscent that allows this..go to settings..notification settings..custom notification settings..turn off privacy mode and you should receive your notifications just like the stock app

Isn't that going to show the message content though? I don't want people to be able to see the message with the phone locked. This is what I want:

}
Even with that privacy option disabled, if I come to the phone after I get a message all I have at the top is a tiny icon like this:
I like the stock function because it says what time it came in, lets you tap it and go directly to the message on unlock, and I'm just used to it.

I am also using Handcent as my default messaging app. Having what you're asking for would be a nice feature, but wouldn't tapping that notification bring you to the stock messaging app? If so, what would be the point of having Handcent?
Sent from my NCC-1701 using Tapatalk 4
I thought maybe there was a setting in there that replicated the TW stuff, that's all. Or maybe there would be a way to reassign the function and have it point to Handcent instead.
Honestly the only thing really like right now is that I can change the LED color and flashing speed because the stock flashing rate is too damn slow. I guess I'll try one of those apps that lets you handle LED functions again, but last time I tried it didn't do anything.
I'd like to be able to assign different notification alert sounds for different apps. For instance... NY Times alerts would have "sound A" while Twitter alerts have "sound B" and Slickdeal alerts would have "sound C". I know that I can assign different notification sounds for each contact... I want to be able to do the same for different apps. Is there any way to do this? Thanks.

Some apps give you that ability. For instance, Hangouts texting app lets you specify what notification sound you wish to hear. Also, my email app lets me choose the notification sound. Check the settings in all those apps.
But without root -- unless the various apps have that in their app settings -- there's no way that I know of. Some ROMs let you do that and I believe some xposed modules let you do that -- but that requires root.

Nine is the name of my corporate email app.
Here's the notification options that app has. See screenshot below. Other apps sometimes allow this also, while most force you to use the "system" notification you've chosen.
This app even lets you choose the OUTGOING send sound. (Not shown in this screenshot, it's on another page.)

The LED light enabled is just a carryover from previous phone. It doesn't actually do anything on the LG V30. However, you can save your desired app settings and export them to use on other devices.

Microsoft's Outlook app allows you to set a notification sound for it and per e-mail address, if wanted. I have 3 e-mail accounts imported to the app, all of which are set to chime differently. The same applies to calendar notifications for each e-mail address as well.
