For some reason, all people I email ends up in my contacts. Even if I emailed them just once and not even from the phone. This never happened on my Nexus One... Any ideas? Thanks.
Go to contacts, menu, display options, select only show contacts with phone numbers.

Ok but what if I have some contacts that are only email addresses. It seems the phone is getting contacts from within gmail's "all contacts" instead of "my contacts"
The only thing you can do is stop synching your gmail contacts.
This has happened on every android phone I've owned since the G1. Google remembers anyone you send an email to and it becomes part of your address book, even if it's not on your list of contacts. To show this, open up gmail in on a PC and type the first couple chars of that email address and it will pop right up.
I know what you're talking about but it didn't happen when I was running cyanogen or kangorama on my nexus one. Maybe it has something to do with Samsungs contact app instead of stock, I don't know...
nope same thing happened to me, i just deleted and move on though...
this is so annoying. Every android phone I have had syncs with 'My Contacts' (G1 and Nexus)...but the Vibrant syncs with 'All Contacts'...I haven't found a fix yet, or a good work around.

In the gmail web portal setting there is an option to turn that off. I remember seeing it just three other day.

I remember the days of the G1, when I had a separate "phone" list setup in google contacts, and I could display ONLY those contacts. Some numbers I do want to keep in google contacts, but only some I want to pop up when making a call.
Why did they change the contacts stuff so much? Does anyone else find this annoying?
any solution to this?
Beside this, can it show the actual group I put in the Google contact rather in the same group "Google"
Hello everyone, I have a question about the merging contacts functionality of the GS2.
Imagine this scenario for contact A:
One "phone" tab. In this tab I specify a couple of phone numbers (say cell and home), a nickname, and the job position. I save this on the phone's memory (as opposed to google or the sim card). Also, in this tab I specify an image from the gallery to use for this contact.
One "facebook" tab that comes from the official Facebook for Android app. This tab has a pic that differs from the pic I selected from my own gallery for the "phone" tab.
One "facebook" tab that comes from the Social Hub Facebook account (needed as the above one won't sync the calendar with facebook events). Obviously, this tab also has a pic that differs from the pic I selected from my own gallery for the "phone" tab.
One "unknown" tab, that is actually a WhatsApp tab, without any image.
What happens 90% of the times that I merge these 4 tabs in to one, is that the icon that the phonebook will keep showing is the one specified at 1), the one taken from my gallery.
On rare occasions though, the icon that will be shown is one of the facebook icons.
I have tried merging the tabs in different orders etc, but it seems to make no difference, so I really can't figure out why, on rare occasions, the facebook icons overrides the phone icon in the unified entry...
Can anyone enlighten me? Cheers!!
And one more thing, I clicked Delete on a whatsapp tab, it said that read only tabs couldn't be deleted, so it was only going to be hidden...
How can I unhide it? I've looked everywhere but I can't find anything, under the Visualization Options I have everything checked...
Noone knows
I thought I was missing something pretty stupid... seems not!
I feel strange asking a stock question here, because I've always come here for rom issues, but I feel like I'm missing something obvious.
I am trying to set my gmail app to display my notifications, which it does, but not play any sounds. I want this happen independently from all my other apps and notifications. I've discovered the sounds tab in personalize, but unlike cyanogenmod that I was running on my incredible, there is no (silent) option. At this point, I've tested changing "Email" sound and it didn't have an impact on what played when I received an email.
...what am I missing with this new version of sense?

In gmail, press the menu key, and press more. Hit settings, and then tap your account. Scroll down to notification settings and click Labels to notify. Then inbox. Then ringtone, and silent should be in there. Hope this helps
... I just added my second gmail account. I'm even more confused now. At this point I have a google account that my phone was set up with and a gmail account that my second account is synced with. It seems that one is set up as a gmail and the original as a google account... Wtf is the difference? And since the gmail account (the second one) isn't seen by the gmail app, but instead by the mail app... What am I supposed to use. Any clarification would be awesome.

In the Mail app, go to more>settings>notification settings. Then turn off email notifications. Then in the gmail app, go into more>settings, and under account settings, click the account you want. If it is not there, add it with the add account button. Then, scroll down to notification settings, and click label notifications>inbox>ringtone>silent
I feel so stupid. Now I remember going through all this when I set it all up before. I think I just thrown for a loop with te option to set up a google account or a gmail account... Where the gmail account used mail app, not the gmail app, but uses a gmail notification icon where the gmail pp uses the stock mail notification icon. I love this phone. I am a die hard HTC fan, but only the hardware. I know ice cream sandwich is going to hit the rezound, but a they going to skin it with sense 4.0? I'd love the option from a manufacturer instead of having to root it and throw ROMs at it.
Thanks again guys for pointing out the obvious. Don't suppose ere is a equally simple way to set the notification icon to the red gmail icon is there?

Not without root. That is trademark to the Mail app. Glad you got your problem fixed
This is quite frustrating and I can't seem to find a solution to this. I have birthdays and anniversaries entered for my contacts which are sync'd to my phone as well. Most of the birthdays and anniversaries show up in my calendar on my phone but some don't. Doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to it either. I noticed that on my HTC Evo LTE I can go to Calendar and specify which calendars it displays. Inside here there is the 'Contacts birthday's & Events' like what I have displayed on my Google Calendar on my PC and the color is yellow. The interesting part is that there is another calendar option called 'People' that is green and I think is an HTC Sense thing but am not 100% on this. The interesting part is that if I choose to display this all of my contact's dates are displayed in duplicate but some extra ones also display.. the ones that don't display on my yellow calendar. One might think the simple solution would be to uncheck the yellow one and check the green one and be done with it but there are also dates that show up on the yellow calendar that don't show up on the green one. The weird part is they BOTH take info from the same source so I don't understand this difference. I went through my contacts making sure they were all added to my 'Friends' group as I think this may have something to do with what events show and what not but it doesn't seem to help.
What gives? What am I doing wrong or what options should I be looking for to correct this? I've already missed a couple anniversaries and b-days a result and it's frustrating because when I realize I missed it I go to my contacts and there it is listed within the contact info but it never displayed in the calendar for some reason.
Someone who knows the calendars please help me out with this problem.
Anyone?
If anyone else has this issue I was able to uncheck the calendars that were currently selected, back out to let it refresh and then go back in and check them once again to get it to work. I'll keep my eye on it and see if it stays fixed but after backing back out the second time there were birthdays there that weren't prior to this little dance. If you're having this issue try giving that a shot.

Works for me, thanks!
Thanks for this thread! I can't believe 2 years later this problem is still occurring with Android (I'm on 4.4.2).
I experience this problem anytime I add a contact's birthday (or another date) to my contacts. In order for it to show up on my calendar, I need to select "Calendars to sync" in calendar settings, then uncheck "Contacts' birthdays & events", back out to the calendar, then go back into "Calendars to sync" and re-select "Contacts' birthdays & events". Once I back out to the calendar again it refreshes within a few seconds and the new date(s)/event(s) finally appear on the calendar.
Just performing those steps in the "Calendars to display" menu doesn't work.
I'm trying to set the default contact type action when adding a new contact so it's saved to "Google" instead of "Phone" but cant for the life of me figure it out. It seems so basic and was easy on my Galaxys.
Anyway, I discovered that the phone defaults to saving people locally which doesn't sync with my Google account. I can change the "contact type" (when adding a new person) to "Google" and thats works but I was hoping to make that the default account type. Also, I noticed that once you save a contact under the account type "People", there is no way to go back and edit the contact to change that.
Also (and unrelated) I noticed a really strange issue...sometimes when I boot my phone, the "Contacts" icon in the app drawer changes to a "People" icon. It works just fine and is the same application underneath. If I reboot my phone, It will change back. I will post some screen shots below if anyone is interested. Possibly its a little bug..
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this..
* If it matters, I'm running stock 4.4.2 Unlocked/Rooted/S-On
Icon
Thought I would post the screenshots anyway.
In the first, the Contact icon is fine, then after a reboot, it's gone and becomes the icon becomes "People"....after another reboot, it's back to Contacts.
Kinda crazy...
I have the same issue with not being able to save contacts to Google by default and its really annoying. I tried contacting HTC support about it but if course they were no help. Hopefully it'll get rectified in a future update

In the People app, go to Settings>Open account settings. Is Google under the options, and is "Auto Sync" turning on? If you tap Google, does the Sync status seem okay? You might try to remove the Google account, and re-add it.
"People" is the name that HTC uses for this app on all its phones. "Contacts" is what Google uses, and on most other devices (like Samsung). I guess its just one of those silly things that HTC made different "just to be different". Its actually odd that "Contacts" shows up at all (then changes to "People"), and I've never seen that.
Since you are rooted, you didn't happen to migrate your contact info or anything related (call history, SMS, etc.) from another device?
You might try to navigate to Contacts (yes, ironically the app is still called "Contacts" even though HTC like to call it "People") in Titatium Backup and see if wiping add data helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
No, my contacts all reside on google and when I setup the phone and sign in, it just migrates them on to the phone. Auto sync is turned on and Google syncs just fine.
The issue seems to be that when adding a new contact from the phone, it defaults the "contact type" (the next selection after adding the name at the top of the screen) to "phone" which, of course, stores the contact locally. Because of that, the contact never syncs with "Google. To correct this, you have to change "Phone" to"Google". That saves it to my Google account and all is fine. What I was trying to do was make that Google selection the default when adding a new conact.
As far as the icon issue, it's just weird. I called a couple buddys to ask what they have and they all have "contacts" on thier M8's ..must be a smaill bug
I don't think people realize just how big of an issue this is... I just sorted the view of my contacts so I only see the "locally" stored contacts... There's dozens of contacts I will lose if I have to reformat... I can't believe I can't edit these contacts so Google will sync them. Wtf?

In the People app, go to Settings>Manage contacts>Merge contacts, and see if you can merge then to Google.
Is this on 1.54 or 1.58 software version?
In the people app try going to the upper left where it says phonebook, do the dropdown and uncheck everything but google and try to save a new contact and see what happens...

I tried that before hoping it would be the solution however that simply chooses which contacts to display on the screen.
Thanks for taking the time to post your idea though.
Solved!!
This was frustrating me also...
you can solve the problem by going into phonebook via the dialler app on your home-screen then swiping over to people and at the top left hand corner under 'phonebook you can choose which contacts are available...
by only choosing your google account now when ever you add contacts the default should be google and not your phone...
if you need to copy contacts from phone to your google account you can do tat by pressing the options tab (3 buttons top right), manage contacts, copy contacts. Solved!!!
Didn't work for me :/
I tried this solution and unfortunately even when I de-select the 'phone' option from the phonebook, the M8 still defaults to putting new contacts in the phone database. Very strange.... anyone else seeing this? Is there a replacement people/contacts app that can solve this issue? It's really inconvenient.
Thanks!

When adding a new contact, HTC automatically uses the last folder chosen as defualt for next ones being added. Hence if you choose google once while creating a new contact and save it, that (google) will become your defualt folder for future contacts too.
So. At post 13, didn't work for me, first time I would have fixed the problem naturally.
I have an m7 with the same issue. Tried everything started here and nothing works.
I thought android was supposed to be the cool OS that lets you customize at will.
Oh well.
Did this ever get figured out? It is driving me crazy!
Me facing it too. Does anyone solved this problem? Please let me know
