Even on Honeycomb, installing any third-party File Manager (I recommend Solid File Explorer or Astro Explorer) will allow you to access those files. The external SD card is located at /mnt/sdcard2 (rather than the conventional /mnt/external_sd or similar)

That problem is indeed solved, but there's another new one: you only can access the SD card in r/w mode with the file transfer app. The /mnt/sdcard2 directory seems mounted in a read-only mode for the rest of file browsers.
When we can access as a root user in ICS we'll be able to remount it as a r/w file system.

That's not the case for me. I have full R/W access to my SD card in any browser including stock and third-party apps. However, I'm running Honeycomb 3.2.1r2 not ICS, so it's probably different.

Yes, /sdcard and /sdcard2 were not write protected in Honeycomb.

[Q] how to write on micro SD card?

Hey guys,
Sorry if this is a dum question but i cant figure out what the issue is. I have a 4gb micro sd card in my Vegan Gtablet. I can go into es explorer and see the sdcard 2. I have been able to create a folder in that sdcard 2. When i take it out the folder is gone so i know that is the place i need to be. Anyways When i try to move media files from sdcard to sdcard 2. It gives me a error and wont move it. What am i doing wrong or am i missing something?
Any help would be great. Thx.
have you tried using Root Explorer to make the folder r/w? I'd like to understand the difference between the sdcard and the sdcard2. I have my gtab (vegan) mounted currently to my pc, and i see sdcard as empty and sdcard2 with files, but when i had no card in, the sdcard had the contents and sdcard 2 was empty.... Anyone have insight on these folders?
sd card2 issues
I am also running vegan on my gtab. my computer can not see sdcard2 (external card) but I can transfer files to it via usb drive using adao file manager. when I shutdown my gtab the files dissapear. Is there a fix that will allow us to use the sdcard2? Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.
I went and used root explorer and gave me error that its a read only system. Im trying to move media files from my built in gtab memory to the micro SD card? How can this be done? Help !!!

There should be a button at the top of the file list to change from RO (Read only) to RW (Read Write) file systems.
When i went into Sdcard 2 no such option. When i went to Sdcard there was. When i went back and held down on SDcard 2 and went to permission that is where i got the error.
Did you format the micro sd card correctly? I had some problems and then formatted it on my PC to FAT32 (make sure you back up your files on the card beforehand to your PC) and all was ok. I can transfer files to it via es file explorer or Astro.
vcs11 - your computer won't show your micro sd (sdcard2), only the internal storage. Disappearing files on sdcard2 seems to be pretty common. For a solution search the forum for ".nomedia" file.

gtablet recognizes sdcard as internal memory and sdcard2 as microsd card?

my gtablet recognizes the folder sdcard as a folder in the internal memory and the microsd as sdcard2 for some reason. when i plug it into my computer, i cant access the actual sdcard2 folder, so i cant access the micro sd. anyone have any experience with this? or any fixes?
thanks a lot. im running tntlite 4.4.0 on it.
That is how it is supposed to be on most ROMs...not just TnT
Pull out the microSD card, plug it into an adapter and plug the adapter into your computer. Then you will be able to read and transfer files!
Or just copy whatever you need to the SDCARD and use a File Manager to transfer them to SDCARD2 once you are on the tablet...
Right now, there is no way to mount both SDCARD and SDCARD2 at the same time to your computer via the tablet
Actualy there are a few apps on Market that do exactly that; some are add supported so you can try for free. Search for SDCard Mount or MutiMount.
I use the add supported Multi Mount SD-Card. Works fine.
SDcard2 dead!

I'd be careful using these. I got one out of the market that allowed you to access the external sd card. Everything went fine. I copied some of my music to the card and then disconnected from the pc. When I went to look at the sdcard2 folder via RootExplorer, I found that 2.39 GB of my 32GB card was used but could not access anything on the card. Now, my g-tab refuses to even see that I have an external card installed and I can't even get the format option in settings to attempt to rescue the card.

eek that sucks. which one did you use?
get ESfile explorer. you can move stuff back and forth between sdcards or a server location. you can also copy from lan location to sdcard2
is that on the market or somewhere else?
it also is installing all of my games and stuff to the tablet internal memory. liek the dungeon defenders stuff.. all of it is downloaded onto the tablet sdcard folder, not onto the sdcard (sdcard2). anyone have any workaround for that?

I'll respond and say it was Multi Mount SD-Card. That's the one I tried, with the same results. I can not get the GTab to read an external card at all. Can see card fine on PC though. I would surely stay away from that one.
I use file explorer to move to the SD Card. THis is a pita and a waste of time. The fastest thing to do is to put it in an SDCARD reader and place it in the PC.
This would be a nice fix and an app worth a buck or two.

[Q] SDcard issue after ICS update

I've noted a problem with SD Card permissions after updating to ICS. I am not rooted, and now that I have updated, it doesn't look like I can root now but the card appears to be Read Only for everything except the preloaded apps.
Any third party app (Astro, Chrome, etc) cannot save files to the SD card. I have to save the file on internal card and then use File Transfer to move it over.
I've found a few suggestions on how to fix it but it requires Root access. Does anyone have an idea how to change the permissions without Root?
Thanks in advance.
I don't think it's possible to change permission assigned to the sdcard2 (external sd), because the file you have to modify is in the system partition. It is possible if you have root permission on your tablet.
Bye ENx
You might use /mnt/sdcard2 instead. At least with ES File Explorer this works fine. Try to contact the developers of your Apps if they don't provide a configuration option.

That's not going to help. In ICS, the external SD is still mounted at /mnt/sdcard2, but now its mounted read-only for non-Sony apps. You would need root to remount the SD card if you want rw to sdcard2, so I've got nothing.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly. I successfully copied a file into /mnt/sdcard2 with ES File Explorer. A copy to /sdcard2 fails.
I'm at ICS.
Information on this issue: "Is Google blocking apps writing to SD cards" (I'm not allowed to post link)
Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried the /mnt/sdcard2 option but it still failed. I have several ways to work around it but it's just annoying that it can't be easily fixed.
I read where ICS 4.06 fixes this but no telling when Sony will release an update to that. I will probably just wait until I can root the device.
Thanks again.
i'm writing to sony support, it's really stupid that i can't access my SD with the file manager i like !
Won't see sd card
Hi guys, i have a problem.
I bought a new sd card and tablet won't see it.
But in phone that sd card could be read.
What is the problem?
I tried to format sd card but the same.
Also the sd card from phone could be read in tablet, that is strange
Make sure the SD card is formatted in FAT32 so the Tablet can read it.

[Q] notes and other documents - where on NT are they?

Hope not too dumb a question but I cannot seem to find the location best suited to copy text, Word, Excel, etc. files to from my laptop to NT. I have CM10 running and a 16GB card, plus a repartitioned area with an additional 10GB although I don't see it.
Where is the best place to copy/access files such as these?

Why not just make a "documents" folder on your SD card and stuff the files from your laptop there?

Well first of all you don't need to add an additional partition on your SD card. You should have 4 made: /boot, /system, /data, and /sdcard. You would place all files onto your /sdcard partition from your computer.
Here's a guide for bootable SD cards, it shows the partitions you should have:

If you're running CM10.x internally on emmc and with an SD card in the slot, you should be able to access both the NT internal storage partition for user-content and the SD card storage. If you use a File Manager app such as ES File Manager to browse the NT's root file-system (you need to go into the FM app's Settings to enable "Root explorer" option) the internal user-content storage is mounted as /emmc and also as /mnt/emmc, whereas the SDcard storage is mounted as /sdcard and also as /mnt/sdcard. You should also be able to see these storage areas when you connect your NT to your PC via USB.
Think the issue is when i use any of the three file manager apps I have installed, and then open /sdcard, I don't see anything. I know for a fact there are apps installed and some test files I copied over, so whats the deal? have given all three root privileges...I'm either looking in the wrong folders, or, something isn't configured correctly far as I can tell...makes no sense
BTW - That is my setup Digixmax - so then these are the locations to copy my files?

[Q] LG Optimus L9 Won't Allow Access to Internal Memory Using File Manager

My carrier is MetroPCS. Since this phone only has 1.8GB of internal memory, I have a 16GB microSDHC card for external storage, but I can't move anything from sdcard0 to my external sd card in File Manager because nothing shows up on sdcard0. I want to move my pictures from sdcard0 to my external sd card, but nothing shows up under the "pictures" folder in sdcard0. I can't just make my storage option the SD card because when I do that, it's still saving on the internal memory, because apparently the phone thinks that sdcard0 is the SD card. So I need a way to change the storage option to my external card or a way to uncover these files that are hidden somehow.
I'm operating on Jellybean 4.1.2 and 3.0.31 kernel.
@pennyboard420 Welcome to XDA forums.
Your camera pictures are actually saved in the "DCIM/thumbnails" folder and not the "Pictures" (only my screen-shots are saved in the "Pictures" folder) folder and no this folder won't open with File Manager. You need a different file browser, like Root Browser that lets you see hidden files/folders. On some of them you will need root access to modify or change these files and folders.
You can't set and change your default storage location from sdcard0 to the external sdcard natively.
You would need to install an app like Link2sd or a swap script, again the device needs to be rooted.

I've tried your solution but wasn't able to get it rooted because some drivers that I needed couldn't be run on the Surface RT tablet that I have due to the tablet only allowing Microsoft developed software to run. However, I have found an alternate solution: Instead I connected my LG L9 to the tablet, opened up the DCIM/Thumbnails folder and manually copied all my pictures into the DCIM/100LGDSC folder of my external SD card.
Chances are you probably already know about this, but just putting it out there.
Thanks again.
