I am a super noob, so please bare with me. I am using droidstyle's awesome guide to root for the first time, but I am stumped when I come to the step that tells me to download "x file" to the root of my sd card? What does that mean, how do I do it, and where on my sd card do I put it?
Also, I am worried about losing anything important that might be stored on my phone when I root. If I follow the steps in the guide, will it be backing up anything I might otherwise lose, or do I need to do that on my own first? Should I even be worried about it? Mostly, I think I am just worried about losing my pics, but are those all on my sd card?
TIA!!
Use USB Storage.
To answer your first question, just go into Settings>USB Settings and click USB storage. Then plug your phone into your PC. After the drivers have installed (You are on Win7 or Vista, right?), click Mount USB storage on your phone. Then just open your phone's SD card in My Computer. Copy the su file you downloaded to the root directory. (You will have to browse to it later.)
No, you will NOT lose any data when rooting. The only time you would lose data is when you install a custom ROM. If you're extra paranoid, just copy your SD card to your PC. (It takes a long time though.) Hope this helps! Respond if you have questions.

Why not use Oden to root. Its so easy! Takes like 30 seconds.
Root means not in any sub folders

I have finally unlocked the bootloader, and went on to step 2 to install clockworkmod. I have read through the whole thread, followed the directions step by step, but can't get this done.
I don't know where I am going wrong, but I cannot get the phone to bring up the "do you want to update" screen as per the instructions in hboot.
When I go into hboot, it goes through the scanning and I can see the file, but then it goes to the hboot screen asking for nothing. I have been trying for 2 hours, with no luck. I hope someone can help me out. Thanks
I also had problems so I just installed it using rom manager and all was good.
make sure its on the root of your EXTERNAL sd card. the phone calls it sd2 or something. also, dont unzip the file.
Lastly, and this is important, dont use rom manager to install cwm, because its not a full install, its a temporary install. and if something goes really wrong with your phone, your going to need a legit cwm recovery to fix it. dont rely on rom manager... learned that the hard way..

I think this may be my problem, I don't know where to put the file. I downloaded the file, connected my phone to PC, clicked on disk drive on phone, opened up the removable disc on PC, then moved file from PC to removable disc of phone. So, it seems my issue is I am not placing the file correctly. I see a whole bunch of folders, my music and pics, but I don't see anything that says sd2.
I am really new to this, so I guess maybe my question should be, when you say "root of your external sd card", what does that mean? Thanks.
I had the same issue until I went to go to restart the phone from the fastboot menu and then the option finally came up.
The external sd card is the one that you would put into your phone. The main storage area is the root of your sd card. Kind of like if you just double clicked your C: drive. Nothing super special about it. Where you put it is exactly where it needs to be.
sdcard2?

Do you have a memory card that you put in your phone?
A microSD card?
When you connect the phone with a microSD card, the root of your SD card would be simply "dragging and dropping" the file right ONTO the card.
Meaning do not put it in any folders within that card. Just on the card itself.
When you double click to open the card you should see the file in the list of things listed.
Hope that helps.
I indeed was using an sd card. I dragged the file and put on the sd card. I then went into hboot, and nothing. I also looked at the files I have on the card, and I dont have sd or sd2 using astro. I am going to try another sd card and see how that works. I just cant figure out what the problem is.

So, I have finally did it. I may be crazy, but I used a different sd card, and did it the exact same way I did it with the other sd card, and it updated. I don't know why, but it did. I put my old sd card back in, because it has everything I saved on it. Hopefully that will not mess anything up.
Now to install a custom ROM. I need to read on this, because I don't know hot to this part yet, lol.
Thanks for everyone's help.

glad it worked out for ya bro!!!! happy hacking
So,
My SD card isn't recognized on the phone - saying it's unavailable, and my computer says it needs to be formatted.
I can't install any app, the phone just soft resets. So it's all due to my SD Card.
I can't format it because I have so much stuff on it - from pictures, to files, to everything. Anyone know how to fix it so I can at least get my stuff off it?
This is really not good if I have to format it...
I have no Idea how to help you, but what up bro didn't know you had the gs2 i remember you for the ole captivate forums lol.
You have to format it then use a recovery program.
My 2 suggestions, which I went through the same issue and got 95% of my stuff...
1. iCare Data
2. Recuva

What do you mean you can't format it? What stops you from doing so?
Can you first, xfer all your personal stuff to other place/space/computer/....., then format it and move those stuff back in when done?
Why can't you do that?

The reason why you can't transfer it is because he needs to format it so its properly read.
I think his uSD can't be read properly in his phone, he didn't say it can't be read in his computer.

If thats the case, then he should copy all existing data to his computer, format, then recopy everything back over...
But he did say in his OP that the computer said it needed to be formatted. So that tells me that his computer can see the card, but cant access it.
Use Recuva or testdisk (google is your friend).
testdisk works great for SD cards and USB devices. The issue will be that it will see the file, but not the filename, so it will numerically name them. small price to pay to get your info back from a would-be dead SD card..

Yea thats why I like iCaredata (find it how you want to) but it keeps folder structure and other things so its easier to track your files.
Maybe try mounting the SD in CWM? I used this when the SD contents wouldn't show after a bad flash.

Maybe your sd card is defective (can't be ruled out). Have you tried another sd card?

Only problem I've ever encountered is the picture size isn't the same as the original. Always smaller.
Just used iCaredata and it worked like a champ.
Thanks, Admin can close.
I rooted, unlocked, loaded a custom ROM. I ported over my #, and it went HAYWIRE. Now I cannot use my phone. I am able to get to the teamwin screen, but I have no roms or backups to load. What do I do?!
I do have a SD card.
When you're at teamwin you should be able to mount your internal sd card and then hook it up to your computer via usb and drop a rom on the internal card.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do.
Unfortunately I just realized I gave my dad my SD card. He will be back in an hour.
Anything I can do now? I see a "mount" option but it's asking me to "reformat"....
Internal sd should be your built in memory. I haven't installed a recovery on my LTE yet but I've never had this problem on other phones.

So my dad rushed over and it's installing...I put over freEvo and it said failed, even after wiping cache/etc. Now what do I do....
Also while I'm here, does anyone know how to install things to SD card instead of internal memory?
When looking at the internal memory, the external sd is mapped to the 'ext-sd' folder.
My suggestion, read some more, then read again, then read instructions a third time until you fully understand what you're doing. Look at some youtube videos of the process too. If at any point along the way you're scratching your head, stop and rewind.
Assuming you actually transferred the rom to the sd (internal or ext), you're simply not pointing to it when flashing through the recovery.
Saying something failed isn't saying a whole lot. If you want useful help, you need to be much more detailed. What completed successfully, what exactly failed, when, what were the steps to duplicate, etc.
Put your phone into the boot loader.... Run the ruu and let it go back to stock... The root your phone again.

This.
Have you tried doing a factory reset yet? a lot of times that's all it needs if you're on a stockish rom
Long story but its cooked. Do not have a spare sd card to put in, and still rooted. Want to make sure any personal info has been deleted. Is there a best way to do this. Tried copying nook update 1.4.3.zip but it wont download since no sd card, or copy from internet
Do you have ADB access?
Edit: mmm.........check out this procedure for the Nook Color. If you have CWM on your NT it might work the same way.

Can you still boot into custom recovery?
If so, you should be able to simply reformat or delete the system, data, and user-media partitions to remove any personal info.
U could look for the repart image file, burn that to sd card, and that will boot from the sd, repartition it and return it to stock 1.4.2, like new again.
there is more than one variant around, Ive used this one a lot

edit ... sorry I didnt catch at first u don't have an sd card....
sort of depends what recovery you had loaded I think as to what options you have

Just search for "repart.img nook tablet" on Google. The first result should show an "unbrick tool" that you can use. It's just an .img file that you can write to an sd via Win32 DiskImager. Boot your tablet by putting the SD in, then inserting a powered USB cable. When the green checkmark appears, you'll know that the process was successful. Just pop the SD out and you can forget about it. The Nook will even be repartitioned, with a lovable setup of 7.5 GB for media partition (personal data) and 5.5 GB for app data. You can get more details by visiting the website I directed you to.
Cheers
I partitioned my SD card a while back, so that I could use Link2SDcard and as t turns out, I did not allocate enough space for app data. I'm wondering if I copy all my files to my PC, and restore them after partitioning again, will all the files link back up with Link2SDcard alright, or will the app not be able to find them anymore/ files not work anymore? Also, do I have to make sure I rename my partions the same as they were before?
I'm a bit nervous about this since I got a lot of app data I would rather not lose

When in doubt, take no chances. Since it's app data we're talking about, if the app data is protected, and if you have enough space on your computer, carefully use a tool to "make an image" of the SDcard, since it'll copy the entire card, including files that are not registered under normal circumstances. On linux, something like dd or even ddrescue will work for this purpose. I'm not 100% sure that'd work in all cases, but it's certainly a safe option if you have a pesky app. I would recommend this for more than just your phone/tablet, too, whenever sensitive data is involved.
Disclaimer: I'd love to get to the point you're at. I have yet to root my device.
