How to change default browser for google search bar? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know the google search bar at the top in ics is not just a google search, since you can adjust searchable items to include other apps, contacts, etc. But I primarily use it as a go to search engine from my home screen.
I have been using dolphin hd browser and while it is the default browser for opening links in gmail, etc, the search bar results always default to the stock browser when you click on them.
How do you change this?
Thanks

You cannot change because the Search is integrated with Android Browser. I search Google Mobile help and doesn't have a tutorial about it.

Maybe it's because i'm using a custom ROM, but i can change the default browser for search...
Have you tried to go to Settings>Apps>Browser and "Delete default values"?

You can change it just click on search bar hit menu button on phone then setting then searchable Items it will show u a check list Uncheck your custom browser and check your new browse tada

Yes you can!
I had the same problem, ended up here, and then startet to test something..
Go to settings, apps, all, browser (yes, the browser you DON'T want to be used), clear defauts. Next time you use the search bar, it will ask if you want to use the default browser, dolphin or whatever other browsers you have installed.
Worked like a charm!

Adding shortcuts for stock Web or Reader on desktop?

I am still learning how to do things. Is there a way to add shortcuts on opening the stock B&N Web browser and Reader to the desktop like you can with other app downloads? I hate always having to hit the home "N" button to bring up the options for Web/Reader access... Very annoying.
I am rooted and have blocked the OTA already.

Are you using the default launcher or a 3rd party app?
What launcher are you using? You should be able to tap and hold in the app drawer and drag them to the desktop.

I want to use the default launcher and not Golauncher. As far as I can tell, they don't show up in the default app drawer or in app manager when using the default launcher.

Check out this app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hari.sideloadapps&hl=en
You will be able to put apps and shortcuts on the normal launcher.
It will also appear in your normal app library along with the others.
I have to Nook Color App Manager, but the Web browser doesn't seem to show up in there.
Also, I can find the .apk for the browser in /system/app as browser.apk, but that only installs the app.
Have you tried the app 'anycut'?
Sent from my rooted NT using Tapatalk
Yes, tried Anycut also. The newly created shortcut doesn't show up on the desktop. If I run Go Launcher and use Anycut... Then the newly created shortcut for The browser shows up with no problem. I just want it in the default launcher.
I've tried asking the forums here if anyone had figured out how to launch the reader with a shortcut or application, aka a shortcut similar to the "open book" icon on the Nook bar. Little response, lol.
I've tried anycut and the nook color app to no success. "Reader.apk" does not launch my currently open book. It just opens a blank screen. I've settled to accept just opening the library first and then opening my book.

[Q] Quick way to go to browser homepage?

Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb, but is there a quick way to skip directly to the internet browser homepage (apart from creating a new window in the menu)?
I was expecting an icon to do it somewhere.
On my old HTC phone there was a menu command to do this directly.
Thanks
No.
HTC added that to their browser. Standard Android and even the Samsung browser do not have this.
Most 3rd party browsers too.
I'm not using touchwiz ATM, but I believe that you can just add a bookmark shortcut to your home screen. Then just use that shortcut to access the Internet and it will always open your homepage first.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, a bookmark to the homepage seemed an obvious workaround.
I was just thinking that I must have been missing a really obvious button somewhere!
The fastest way I've seen is inside the browser, open up the options and select New Tab. It will open your homepage.

[Q] Setting default search engine and browser

I have a couple of questions to which I have not been able to find any answers to.
Is there anyway that the default search engine in Android can be changed from google to something else of my choosing, e.g. startpage.com? I don't mean the browser search but the google search in android.
How do I set the default browser to be something other than the stock browser, i.e. clicking on links within other apps (like e-mail) would open my browser of choice instead of the stock browser? I'd like to use FF as my default browser but cannot find anywhere that I can set it as default.
I'm using stock GB 2.3.4.
For the default browser question go to settings>applications and find the current default browser. Click it and you should see a "clear default" button at the bottom. Open up a link and then it will give you the browsers on which you want to open the apps with. Click on wet as default and select the browser of your choice.
Edit: Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All

The google search engine is a widget. So you should probably try searching if there is a widget available for your prefered search engine.
@ephraim033. I forgot about the default flag settings for apps in the settings menu.
@iamafrk. I didn't realise the Google search was a widget. You learn something new every day. Unfortunately a widget doesn't exist for startpage.com. I wonder what's involved in creating one. Something I'll look into when I have time.

[Q] How do I remove the google bar from my home screen?

First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.
Ok, what' a "launcher"?

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.
Root file manager under system then apps. Look for Google search bar and add .back at end then restart phone

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"
Suggested launcher?

Which one is best/most reliable/free-or-cheap?
If I muck this thing up, Duh Hubby will get really upset!
I know there is/was a list of recommended apps & widgets, but can't find the thread now. Don't know if it mentioned a launcher anyway.
Thanks again!

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth

Emui 3 Default Browser Setting?

Anyone know how to change the default browser to Chrome in Emui 3.0? [SOLVED - see below]
While the "Manage Apps" setting has a button at the bottom for "Default App Settings" and you can change the ones for things like the launcher, camera and email, there is nothing there letting you change the browser.
OK, looking further, with Go Launcher Ex, one can also try to change default apps, but I have discovered 2 things:
(1) The usual method in "Manage Apps" to clear App Defaults does not work - defaults are not shown there
(2) There seems to be something called AndriodHwResolver (yes, misspelt like that) which is somehow controling the default app process.
Thanks, Huawei, for breaking something else with this unnecessary piece of software which stops users being in control of their own phones.
Why did you change to EMUI 3.0 if you don't like it?

I had to remove the browser altogether. Plus the stock browser seems linked to Baidu.com somehow..
If your rooted you can just delete \system\app\browser.apk and reboot, if your not i'm not sure you can do anything?
"Why did you change to EMUI 3.0 if you don't like it?" I do like it. I just don't like its flaws. And Huawei didn't exactly advertise:
"Warning, this system update will remove apps, break your ability to log into Google, and to run Google Maps / Google+, choose your own browser, etc etc etc."
When I have upgraded other phones (including other brands of Chinese phones, I might add) none of this stupid stuff happened.
OK, You gave me the hint I needed. I disabled "Browser" in Manage Apps. Then when I tried to open a URL, it gave me a choice of Chrome or Baidu. Choosing Chrome worked. I hope it doesn't break anything else...
