I want to root only to remove some built-in apps including HTCLinkifydispatcher.apk.
However, I don't want to deal with any issues related to: having 3rd party apps running on a rooted device that also handles my money money, receiving any OTA updates, and warranty eligibility.
<< If my above assumptions of potential issues are wrong, please correct me ! >>
I know rooting is just getting underway and that I need to wait patiently wait for the unroot process as well, but I'm curious if my following plan makes sense:
1. Root phone
2. Remove apps I don't want
3. Unroot phone
4. OTA updates come as needed. If a major OTA update adds back a removed app I dont want, repeat steps (1-3) as needed once the community has had a chance to root/unroot the OTA update
Whoops just realized that this might be better for Q+A forum, so feel free to move the topic there.
I just froze the above apk with TB. The usual open with dialogue did not come up. I think it's going to take alot more than just getting rid of the htc apk's to return that type of functionality.

Ah I see, good to know going in before I make the plunge and get this phone. I hope the situation improves (maybe HTC can really improve the preset linking capabilities) because from the threads I've seen so far quite a few linkable objects just don't work or redirect to the wrong thing (especially linkable objects the HTC linker app doesn't know about).
I'm hopeful CM will have something mostly functional before the year's end or sooner. While some prefer aosp, I really want an OS that has no HTC apk's in it . For the longest time I didn't want to switch from sense. After some prodding from another member here, I saw the light. While it took more time to get cm configured to my liking, eventually it was perfect. Everything worked (99%), and there was no bloat at all.

I have a Rezound on Verizon and I want to get rid of Sense/Verizon crapware (blockbuster app that I can't delete? realy!?) and instead install plain-jane stock Android 4.0.
In addition to the stock UI, I want to be able to Tether like I used to on my Nexus One without paying an extra $20 per month or whatever.
I know very little about the unlocking/rooting process (are these asks even possible?) but I have been following these forums for a few weeks and I read they just opened up the boot loader and I am wondering what that means for me.
Could anyone give me a quick yes/no to those question and if yes, post a few links to how I might I do it? (I saw the "how-to" for using the HTCDev tool they put out today if that is what I am supposed to do...)
ps: Of course I tried to find an answer before posting and I noticed on similar questions everyone responded saying to get cyanogen ROMs but I would really prefer just going totally pure on this and with stock Google just like you get on a Nexus; is that even possible or am I misunderstanding how the UI layer works?
Thanks!
This will be possible within the next couple months. When HTC releases the official ICS update for the phone then the accompanying kernel source that will happen.

First off, thank you for being the first newb ever to correctly create a thread on XDA. Not only that, but in the correct place! I will actually take the time to answer your questions without being pissed off, lol.
We don't have ICS yet, but when you unlock your BL and root you might want to consider getting ADW Launcher or ADW EX. Others might recommend another launcher, but ADW has a tone of ICS options. We can remove bloat with the Clean Tool once you are rooted.
ive read the thread in the general forum for noobs.
but i still dont quite understand all these things and what purpose they serve.
im SUPER new with all this stuff. so my apologies.
could someone help a brother out?
what is your question specifically?
just curious about what they are and do basically.

I'll try and help.
First you must ROOT your phone. This basically grants you access/permission to FIDDLE with a lot of things you can't normally. I use the word *fiddle* loosley, meaning you can install root tools (like overclock) custom Roms, change system settings, flash themes... the list goes on. It's kind of like the equivalent to "jailbreaking"
Rooting is the "first and foremost"... basically do this first. and all other things follow.

Well the sticky in the main forum really is a good place to start, as all these terms are defined there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483113
As well as step-by-step instructions how to root. That should get you started!
ok so root first. got it. would any of this benefit my phone in anyway? or is it mainly just to put custom themes and such on?

It is much more than that. I wrote this out before, so I will copy it again:
People have problems when rooted because they are not careful or do not know what they are doing. Rooting gives you (to put in Windows terms) full Administrator rights to your phone. With this right comes responsibility, so you must be careful and do research. This is why rooting also voids the warranty. The phone is now open for the user to do whatever they want, and circumvent any restrictions put on the phone by the manufacturer (including those in place to prevent harm to the device). But like a computer with Admin rights, rooting allows you to install any application, any "OS theme", and tweak the hardware to do what YOU want with it, not what the manufacturer wants.
So please be sure to READ READ READ all you can before you start!!! You don't want a $600 phone coaster. Just browse the forums for a couple weeks and learn from the posts.

It depends what you consider a benefit. Sure..theming can be a benefit, but rooting provides the gateway to address any negative or less than ideal aspects of a device. For instance, The Note has been perceived as being somewhat laggy. So rooting allows you to free up system resources by eliminating unneeded bloatware that you can't remove if you remain stock. Also the lagginess has been addressed by overclocking, modding and building kernels that do specific things and of course making custom roms. The Note is still very early in the developmental process, so many things to improve the user experience of the device will become available over the course of time....but it all starts with being rooted.

Android isn't like iOS. I had an iPhone for four years before my Note and I know where you coming from. What the other guy was saying is that rooting can be viewed similar to jailbreaking, but it is kind of completely different. You don't need to be rooted to use themes (or most of the stuff on Cydia). Rooting allows you to back up apps, flash custom ROMs, etc. Otherwise, you most likely don't need root.

if i were to root it and do whatever else would that affect the notes ability to update itself when the time comes?
like if i were to put some custom rom or whatever on it and lets say ics came out (lulz) would it still be able to update to it, and would it basically remove everything i did to it

Trust me, if you go the root and custom rom way, you will never install an official update. not because you can't, but because it will be leaked and debloated months before it is official.
i installed saurom. with and ics theme. i like it alot. but i cant get into setcpu or any program that requires root access. which is kind of an issue. no one else seems to be having that as an issue.
I rooted my Note a couple days ago and am still trying to figure out the benefits of doing so. I guess just spend time reading through this forum for the answers. That's what I am doing, but so far I see no benefit at all. The phone does all I want it to do so far. Maybe I am missing something.
Also, When i run quadrant, the scores are consistently lower after rooting the device then they were before. Not sure why though.
You are correct that the Note and newer phones may need no help. Not like two years ago. But, the big advantage to rooting even if you don't want to flash roms is Titanium Backup for app mgt and nandroids or full image backups--imho. The other like mentioned is earlier os releases. I have had ICS on my N1 for quite awhile and is still not on most new phones.

If you are sure you are rooted, a dialog box with a little Android head wearing an eyepatch will pop up asking if you want to allow the application to have root access. You must allow it here.
I decided to do some extensive research on the following questions and while some were answered, most weren't.
For those of you who may or may not remember the good ol' days with the htc hero..where one click roots were common. Apps like z4root plunged me into the fantastic world of rooting. Now rooting is much more difficult, as I have come to determine with other sources. I am eligible for an upgrade and am going to get the HTC Evo 4G LTE. I would like to root it but keep the original stock rom as it has all these awesome features that come along with it. Unfortunately I heard that you can't get OTA software updates while rooted. I don't know if this means it just won't allow me to do it or if it'll brick my phone trying. This is an issue I haven't come across before as I had the HTC hero and it no longer received software updates. I did however see that some people said developers offer these updates with some additional features right out of the box. Does that mean people will be having sense roms perfected so to speak when the OTA software updates come out? Because that then leaves me with the question of having to unroot my phone. On another note z4root claims to be able to unroot phones instantly no matter how you rooted it. I really do want to root it because I'd like to take advantage of the apparent good features of sense...while deleting that annoying bloatware and having wifi tether. Until that EVO then gets to a point of dinasaur speed..at which I am fully ready to jump into Cyanogenmod. They have truly won me over. So just wondering if this is possible. Please feel free to correct any noob mistakes or wrong information as I am learning and need to continue to do so. Oh and last thing...if it's true that developers will be taking sense roms and adding stuff into it so people like me can have those new updates with root still..where would I go about finding such updates? Websites..etc. Thank you!
If you want to root it you can do it through HTC or go for s-off depending on your hboot.
Either way after an ota comes out there will be the updated stock from posted here if you want to get the updates. With HTC dev to unlock you get relocked if you take the ota's.
S-off you never want to take ota's as it may change your hboot and you may lose your ability for s-off in the future.
Also check out the stickies at the top of the forums for info on rooting the evo lte.

Lot of different questions compacted into that large paragraph. Not clear on which questions you want answered and in what priority. I'll do my best to throw out some answers.
First, comparing the EVO LTE to the Hero will result in a bit of confusion. If z4root worked on the Hero, then the Hero did not have write protected internal memory. In the world of security, otherwise known as methods to prevent root access, internal memory write protection is one of the more complicated methods used on modern cell phones. Due to the complexity of the internal memory write protection, there are very few people and groups capable of reverse engineering and bypassing this security, which is why there aren't very many tools, usually only one or two. Prior to this internal memory write protection, back in the z4root days, methods of gaining root access were much simpler.
Now, to the modern day HTC devices with the internal memory locked down. HTC offers and official tool, after many users requested, that allows *most* of the internal memory to be unlocked and root access gained. There are some 3rd party methods of internally unlocking the memory, but these are rare due to the required complexity.
In regards to applying OTA updates, other than the internal memory locking controlled by the bootloader, as mentioned above, OTA updates have charged relatively little to the days of the Hero. All OTA updates remove root access, but in a very simple manner by changing permissions. This can easily be restored. On the other hand, HTC OTA updates sometimes will update the bootloader, which can have the impact of relocking the internal memory, or patching a 3rd party memory unlock solution.
All frustrations with gaining root access should be directed at the carrier and manufacturer as they have intentionally devoted time and labor to developing these methods and they are the only parties with the power to directly change the process.
Hope that information helps fill in a few gaps on the changes that have occurred from the Hero to the EVO LTE in regards to root access/security!
Wow you guys are fast I think e everything was answered. But now I have two new ones. So I can root it through HTC..could you please explain how I would go about doing this? Do I just send it to them asking them to root it? And as for the updating without having to unroot it developers will post like SENSE with additional out of the box stuff here I just gotta find it .
THANKS!!!

Go there and you can use the tool to unlock. As previous user posted, it allows most, NOT all, of the internal storage/memory/partitions to be written to.
You will void your warranty with HTC doing this though, however, most sprint stores from what I have read, don't know that you used the tool to unlock unless they specifically check for it in the HBOOT.
If you are on the 1.13 software, then, you can use the LazyPanda method to root and obtain full S-OFF (all paritions unlocked). If on 1.22, your only option at this point is to use the official HTC dev unlock method.
If you are on 1.15 use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
Its HTC dev unlock and all completely automated. It will unlock your phone, put on a custom recovery, and root teh stock ROM
If you have 1.13 run lazy landa to S-OFF
Thanks guys will do!
I'm currently running an 8.9" HDX with a working AOSP - thanks to all the help I got on this forum and specifically followed this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582773
but the main applications that I now need to use for work are iOS only (don't ask... NOT happy) so I'm back to carrying an iPad around everywhere and as such I'm going to sell my HDX. Before I do that I need to return it back to stock... I found a number of threads referencing how to do this but wanted to be extra careful. At present I'm just running Safestrap with a second ROM slot that I boot with all the non-standard stuff, I got there via SuperSU.
What's the right sequence of de-activates / un-installs / magic incantations to get this thing back to "boring, stock" just like it would come from Amazon? Is it as simple as re-enabling over-the-air updates and letting it "fix" itself? Or do I need to specifically back out some of the safestrap/superSU stuff first?
Help? (and THANKS)

Depends on how you used SafeStrap. If you ONLY installed in the stock rom, then an update likely would do it. If you installed safestrap a second time from the working rom-slot as well, then updates won't work, because the BL & Kernel CANNOT be flashed.
The best thing is to remove all wifi connections with "forget network", then go into safe strap & activate stock rom. Then go back to the boot options & delete the rom-slot you created. Boot back into stock partition, uninstall Safestrap & then reconnect to wifi & check for updates.
I would HIGHLY recommend you follow my directions about forgetting nearby, if not all, wifi networks. If you turn wifi off in a slot, but not in stock, or vice versa, it can cause boot issues , as well as wifi issues.
I would not return it to stock. That device could go for a premium right now to other users simply because you can get AOSP and so many cannot yet.

Why would it go for a premium? It is absolutely 100% rootable. It has not been patched against the VolumeManager/vold ASEC exploit. In fact, I am nearly certain the bootloader can bed unlocked from my investigation. Unfortunately that part is beyond my abilities & exceeds the time I would need to get caught up on the msm89xx+ SoC, but I would just about bet the farm that it can be done.

Because when I posted that we had no root, and it was still a "hopefully sometime soon" with 9/10 of the HDX's on a version that couldnt be rooted.
It is nice that we have one Chinese method now and that you might get something soon, though I think you are suddenly pretty full of yourself on these forums with the little bit of knowledge you gained recently. Much better people at this have not been able to get the bootloader cracked. But best of luck to you.

Actually, the little time I've been around is well over a decade. This ain't my first username. Secondly, there is already an ASEC based root that WAS created by someone better with this stuff than me, so it's not full of myself, it is FACT. I am rooted, have been each & every time, without blocking anything & without having to sacrifice connectivity, another FACT. Coincidentally, the reason it was never published, well I'd venture a guess that it's because of stupid posts & self-entitled people ignorantly writing or PM'ing to insist that things be done for them on their terms. Another fact, it was that kind of crap that made me leave this forum a few months ago. So, I don't know what "better people" you are talking about that have failed at it, but I do know the better people that have done it.
Another fact, anyone at all can read & discover just how small the patch for the ASEC vulnerability was. It doesn't take a genius to then decompile the vold & search for the that one event which was used to patch it, which subsequently tells all you need to know.

If you're having a bad day, don't take it out on me. Post something useful next time. I'm looking to clear as much sprint/samsung apps as I can & trying to find a safe remove list.
No, I didn't have a bad day but I was trying to be honest. You see, you asked a list of safe to remove bloatware in Samsung phone, to tell you the truth the TouchWiz itself is a bloatware and that vary for different people. For me even the stock browser is a bloatware, why would you remove any bloatware at the first place. Do you mean you prefer to use a stock Google app instead such as Notes over S-Note or Chrome over stock browser. Running a pure Android is your best bet to describe a bloatware-free ROM/firmware. Now, why would you take it our on me instead? You wish to remove bloatware but don't have the slightess idea what system apps are bloating your phone then you sir better don't do any god-damn modifications on your phone. Have a nice day!
Knowledge
I'd like to learn how to do goddamn phone modification. I own this device with great potential that, if I'm correct, has been choked off by the service providers etc. for their financial benefit. That's bull.... At the risk of getting an intellectual ass kicking for ignorance, what is a good method for learning about these subjects, what resources are available for study. Please share your wisdom. I'm sure I'm mistaken but it seems your superior knowledge over another gave you the right to be a ****, a **** void of useful information. If the questions are beneath you and waste your time ignore them. I'm wanting to gain knowledge, ignorance, contrary to the "is bliss" school of thought, sucks.
Actually what I was aiming for was to remove as many apps as possible without bricking/softbricking the phone thereby meeting the following goals.
1. Get it as close to barebones as possible. Only needing the "must have" apps that let it function.
2. I really only use this phone for reading pdf's, 3-4 games and watching some youtube help videos while I play, for when I get stuck with a part and to use this phone as a camera.
3. Getting rid of a good portion of over 300 apps that are currently on the phone. Sorry if you may not get it or understand it but it's kindof an OCD thing, if I don't need it at all, it needs to go!
4. I don't have a service plan nor do I want one on this phone, I have another phone for that.
Rob, two wrongs don't make a right. He can post & thinks what he wants. If you don't like what he has to post, don't cuss him out, add him to your ignore list or take it to PM's. I've already tried the cyanogen 12.1 rom from http://www.ionmm.com/ but it has a bit too much battery drain atm and makes my battery heat up way too much, leaving it on and idle sitting on the home screen with a stock install and no other apps installed on it.
