Is this a passive aggressive attack at my reply? I assume so, as there are not other replies. Please enlighten me as to your issue. Though I do little these days, I used to build a lot of my own ROMs, along with flashing others. With each flash I made a script to extract (via adb) the desired apps, unzip the ROM, and place within the apps. Afterward, it would zip, sign, push to the phone, and flash. All that was required was a mouse click, and I did not have to have someone else's work (with that much access) on my phone. So, please tell me why you should give me a thumbs down.

It was not a stab at just you, just a random thought caused by a string of replies I had seen from various users in the shift forums upto and including yours.
Who cares if you find this application useful, obviously others(including the OP) have. I have no need to convince you to use this, and really have not used it nor plan to. How about instead of acting arrogant and listing a string of 'accomplishments' as if it adds weight to your OPINION about the usefulness of an app, you take that 'skill' and teach people to write a script similar to the one you felt so compelled to brag about writing?

I posted the script quite some time ago. I am not trying to be arrogant, it is just that I see all of the app put out that people really do not need (if they spend a few minutes learning how to work at the phone). But thank you for actually responding.

I had the same, and installed CM7 without any problems. So I say, just go for it - you gonna love it. If you have any problems installing just ask, and Ill see if I can help (and if I cant, theres about 100 others who can)
Wow rev thanks.. up and running and glad to see so many apps working. Easy stuff with your video.

Yep, I believe the kernal has nothing to do with the android installation, Android has it's own kernel. I have F4 Phantom installed and am having no issues what so ever -- other than the ones that everyone else is having due it's alpha state
Once installed you will be able to choose between android and HP's Web OS after rebooting the device.
If you need a video guide to move 4 files onto a usb drive, run a program in CMD prompt/Terminal, then you really shouldn't be running Alpha software.

people seriously need to research heavily before doing something they don't understand.
all these things have the potential to turn your precious electronics into expensive paperweights. That goes for anything.

I'm getting tired of people using this BS as an excuse for reckless behavior.
Modding/Using something foreign to you without first knowing how it works is being reckless.
We were all new a some point in time.
Just that there are usually instructions with anything you buy or directions on how to perform a procedure. It is called being prudent.
Would you perform surgery on someone without knowing everything that is involved in surgery?
Would you let someone who doesn't know how to drive a car onto the road?
Would you let someone that doesn't know how to cook prepare a meal for you?
I can go on and on.
So why would you risk damaging you precious $$$ device?
Read the directions/manuals and ask questions if you don't understand something. When you fully understand what you are doing and all accompanying risks, then you should proceed with caution.
Being a noob is not an excuse for negligence.

Actually it might be a good idea to remove it as there is a limited amount of space in the /boot partition, so if you've got a ton of kernels or other stuff in there, there may not be enough space left for moboot and cm7's uimage. Shouldn't be an issue if you've only added one kernel though, but just sayin'...
My reply to all of you is this:
THOUSANDS of people bought these CLEARANCE tablets with the intention of getting Android on them. It would be different if this was a $500 tablet and people actually cared about the value. I know that I wouldn't have bought it for anymore than the $100 I spent, and that makes it more of a TOY than anything.
I say that if people want to flash this, there is no reason why it can't be easy. Hundreds of people are saying "Thank you" because they wouldn't have been able to do this without my video. To them, I say "You're Welcome." To the rest of you, if this video bothers you, don't watch it.
Noobs will always exist, I'm just trying to do my part in helping them de-noobify themselves. (is that a word? Well, it is now.) Some of you act like you have to EARN the right to flash this. I don't understand that. People understand the risk and make their decision based on their level of comfort. If I screw something up, I ask for help. If YOU screw something up, YOU ask for help. I think that is the whole purpose of these communities. For those of you who are saying that my video is causing people to come out of the woodwork and ask stupid questions... I say deal with it. Again, what gives you more of a right to try this alpha than anybody else?

Nook Tablet Super Post - Reference Thread

Hey everyone, I figured I’d start this thread as a one stop shop for anything major related to the Nook Tablet. Use it, like it, hate it… it’s up to you. I’ll add more as they come out. I’m going to put this in the General forum since it’ll contain a little bit of everything. I'll clean this up as more happens but for now, it is what it is. Oh, and if you don't like this post, go somewhere else... no need to hate in here.
General Information
Wallpaper Size is 840x1024
Press N and volDown for a screenshot
Amazon App Store will only download apps to an SD Card.
Factory reset - Turn off, turn on while holding N
Factory restore - Power down, then power up and interrupt boot cycle 10 times.
The Nook Tablet can't connect to Ad-hoc networks so if you're trying to wireless tether to your phone, go to /system/app and remove tetheringmanager.apk. Then go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile AP and use the stock program. I tested it with my NT and a Samsung Infuse and it works.

Redundant information. People should learn to use the search function that is in the upper right corner of the page. That is what is wrong with society today. They expect someone to hand them the answer.
Wow. The air must be thin up there on your high horse.
Sorry, but i don't agree with your position on this. Search can be very clunky and you may have to wade through pages to find what you need. And a relative noob like me needs to know WHAT to search for. I find this post to be pretty useful and I applaud the OP for taking the time to do it.
Searching is good, but I appreciate one stop shops. Good effort.

Whoa, throttle back a little hwong, he's just helping people out.
When I bought my phone last year, it had already been out for 6 months. And when I looked to learn about rooting, I was a year behind the development crowd. It took me two months to sift through 12 months of threads to gather all the relevant information.
We need a reference thread so that us little people can come along and find all the up-to-date information. You know as well as I, hopefully, that in 6 months much of this "redundant information" will be out of date information and we need a way to keep it straight.
So thank you spoland.
Uphill both ways in the snow!
Seriously, the problem with search is that it only works if you know the answer! Really.
Posts like this should be stickied. Good work.

Does anyone else think it ironic that hwong96 comes to XDA to get answers that are pretty much handed to him? Did he have to do the work? No. Someone else did and he was spoon fed the answers. Yet for some reason, "Mr. Whats Wrong With The World" here feels that having a thread like this will destroy the world. Seems every single device has a thread like this. Information is fragmented. Its a good thing to have it all in on place.
Here's a suggestion. Instead of capitalizing on the world of XDA developers, figure it all out on your own. No teachers. No Schools. No books - I guess having knowledge in books will destroy the world also. Just get a device and figure it all out.

Sure you did. You were born into the world with knowledge of how Andorid works. Must have been a long flight in your space orb from planet Krypton there Indirect. I realize you rooted a NT at a B&N location. Still you had to get some understanding of Android from someplace. If you can look at a device and know exactly how to root it, then where is my unlocked bootloader, tuff guy? [and before the little indirect groupies jump all over me for daring to talk to you in such a way - humor people!]
A couple odds and ends that might be useful:

How to sideload apps: http://liliputing.com/2011/11/how-t...ok-tablet-amazon-appstore-go-launcher-ex.html
App Manager makes it possible to add sideloaded apps to the stock app and home screens. (Someone linked to their copy here, but maybe it should be uploaded elsewhere as well.)

Unroot application is back without the issue of having another developer make it. You can just thank me this time around. But yeah, I recreated the app and now it even reboots properly.
The first post needs to be fixed. It mentions a factory restore as power off then power on + hold N. That is actually factory reset (data wipe) and is not a factory restore.
Factory restore is power down, then power up and interrupt boot cycle 10 times. This takes it back to a stock NT. I think people need to know the difference as a factory reset does not fix most problems people are having, whereas a restore does.
And, would be good to have a thread like this stickied

All In One Toolkit By hasoon2000:
Go here and Try this tookit first, its extremely simple and Hasoon has made a lot of effort making this. This will take care of a lot of your rooting needs outlined below.
Click to collapse
Basic Knowledge:
I have been getting questions regarding unlocking and rooting a lot and I keep refering people to Binary's page he has made and spend a lot of time making. In Order to root you need to the the following in THIS order:
1. Unlock bootloader (For mac and linux go to this thread its for the rezound, but is exactly the same for the amaze. For pc go here)
2. Put Custom recovery on your phone (for mac, pc and linux look below on post #2)
3. Root your phone, Either with a custom rom (in the development section), or by flashing/installing su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, via custom recovery that you just installed in step 2. In order to learn how to flash su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip go here. For extreme newbies look at the bottom of the post here to show you easy way to get into your recovery and flash/install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, via taking out back battery.
All this found in thread [HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G in the first sticky post in General Section, in much more detail.
NOTE: ONE CLICK ROOT TOOL DOES NOT NOT UNLOCK YOUR PHONE NOR DOES IT PUT CUSTOM RECOVERY, IT ONLY ROOTS. YOU MUST FOLLOW BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOVE
Click to collapse
Troubleshooting:
1.Common Problems: You can find more common problem questions answered here
2.Custom Recovery Problems: If have problems with step 3 (Custom Recovery) in [HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G, or from the post below, go to this page.
3.WiFi and Bluetooth Problems: This is due to your kernel. I have seen multiple threads about this. Here are the ways to resolve this:
Whenever you download a rom there's a boot.img file in there. always extract the boot.img file and use xobarders kernel flasher to flash your kernel before you install your custom rom. If you are running a stock rom, download All in One Toolkit by Hasoon. Alternatively you can use the one and only custom kernel we have right now Faux's Custom kernel.
4.Touchscreen and Multitouch issues (Gaming Etc): It seems like installing a third party lockscreen widget such as Widgetlocker, Go locker, or Flyscreen, tends to interfere with the multitouch of the HTC amaze. Disable these widgets and restart your phone. Then use this program from the market to get 4 solid points touch points, If you are not getting it, uninstall the lockscreen widget altogether, and restart until you are constantly getting four touchpoints.

Rules and General Knowledge:
Over time we get many many questions in the General Section about things that can easily be found. I assure you if you read these in this order, you will learn a lot, and have almost no questions left.
1. Read the FAQ section: Here
2. Please Read the Bible in the development section, This is very helpful: Here
3. Look in the development section for what you need before asking for roms, stock roms, how to root, or how to unlock. (The development section is only three pages, I urge you to go through it if you want to learn how to do things and are unfamiliar with things: Here
4. Use the search feature before asking a question.

Camera Quality:
There have been many debates among people about camera quality, this is a guide that provides good information on camera and why the amaze has the best camera on the market
1. Aperture 101: http://inluminent.com/2005/12/14/digital-photography-101-aperture/
2. Lens size/focal length (wide viewing angle): http://www.paragon-press.com/lens/lenchart.htm
Some comparisons:
HTC Amaze: F/2.2, backside illuminated sensor, Excellent camera software, Close to zero shutterlag. 28 mm lens, very wide viewing angle (get more real estate in one picture)
Iphone 4S: F/2.4, backside illuminated sensor, Above Average camera software, Close to zero shutterlag 35 mm lens, wide viewing angle
Galaxy S II: F/2.65, NO backside illuminated sensor, Above Average camera software, Normal shutter lag, I think 28 mm lens (seems to be more like 30 or 35), very wide viwing angle.
Galaxy nexus: F/2.75, NO backside illuminated sensor, Basic ICS camera software, Zero shutterlag, 35 mm lens, wide viewing angle
The Amaze has the widest viewing angle, as it has a 28 mm lens, the lower the number the more real estate you get, look at number 2 (lens size) above. Look at how much wider of a field you get with galaxy s II and amaze 4g. Amaze has the lowest f/stop (aperture), f/2.2, meaning more light gets to the sensor. However lower f stop comes at a price, I prefer a f/2.4 on the iphone 4s but with a wide viewing angle of 28mm, no phone on the market has that right now. The higher your f-stop, the easier it will be to focus on larger subjects and objects and to keep more of the frame in focus, at the cost of a darker image. The lower f-stops will give you a blurrier background and possibly create some darkness around the corners of the frame, but a brighter overall image
compare images a when it shows you the distance: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/i...axy-S-II-vs-Amaze-4G-camera-comparison_id2883

I've read somewhere there are 3.7 million Android devices activated on Christmas day alone. Assumed that 1% of those new device is the Amaze and that'll give us 37,000 new Amaze owner with assuming/estimately/approx. 10% wanted to root their phone ... that equal to 3,700 newbies and at least 1/2 of them will head to this forum
I wouldn't be suprise if my Mom log-in here and ask is rooting will allow her newly Amaze steamed her rices for her though.
So, get ready and be a little gentle if you could lads.

I believe if you are unable to unlock and root your phone, you better not do (actually not be allowed to do) it in the first place and first spend some time learning before doing it...people just want to root for the heck of it without understanding anything and they probably will have 2000 more questions after rooting and trying to customize and flash roms.
Do you know how much I had to read before I decided to unlock and root my nexus one the first time!!! I wanted to know what it meant what I could do etc. I screwed my phone up 2 times and tried different things to fix it and was able to...that's how you learn. with all the guides provided here people should have no problem learning SO SO much... This way they can get better use of their phone...learn how to flash themes, learn what hboot, fastboot, kernel, etc all that stuff does.
Please folks I urge you to read read read...It's not like your reading a boring textbook, its cool stuff that'll make you be able to use your phone much more effectively and to your liking.
I say binary should take out the noobproof recovery zip file and let people learn how to do it in fastboot and adb, thats how i learned, but then that'll create a massive load of questions i guess. learning a little bit of dos in the process its always usefull.

We're still getting the questions and I'm still getting the private messages but not as much now. I agree with you that the people that can't root the device because they can't follow the instructions should not be allowed to do so. Here's a simple reason why. When I used to develop ports and themes (couple roms back in the G1/MT3G days) I always had to include a disclaimer that WAS the link. In other words I would say download by clicking the disclaimer below which would waive their rights to blame me should something go wrong. Why did I do that? Because people couldn't read or follow instructions which caused a quite a bit of grief for me. Funny thing was that when I began using that method people were asking me "Where can I download?" and that would prove to me that they did not read the disclaimer or the instructions for that matter. I have also learned that you have to put words in color, different sizes, use underlines and even in bold to get their attention. In fact, I'll be willing to wager that that last sentence was the first to get your attention. Which proves my point. Developers need to make things stand out without making it look tacky.
Here's an example of one of my themes with what I was talking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8899943
You must add pictures, underlines, changelogs that are easy to find, read and understand. Then you need to add the disclaimer. That way you don't need to worry about getting people pissed off at you for messing up their device.

Would have saved me a few minutes the other day if this was posted, but I just opened the .bat files in textedit and ran them in terminal(with whatever tweaks to the commands needed). Glad it is here for future osx/linux people though.
I never did figure out why, but a few different versions of fastboot didn't work for me- one of these had a version that worked for me, the others didn't, can't remember which worked.. RecoveryInstallerForNoobs, EasyKernelFlasher, Xboarder56-All-in-One-Tool. Or maybe it was fastboot-mac that I think I found on the htcdev site..
Either way, definitely cool to see more mac/linux friendliness in the forums I don't touch my pc if at all possible..

I don't know about 2.0, I downloaded it and some other files 2 nights ago when I got my amaze. Like I said, there were a few versions of fastboot that I tried that didn't work.. still the entire process of unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery, and flashing a rom took less than 30 minutes once I figured out that the fastboot file was the issue. It probably helps that I thought I'd have this phone a month ago, so already researched everything I would need to know.
Binary tell me if you need me to change anything, or how the posts look. Feel free to change them. After seeing what you have done before, you have a better design sense than I do I guess

Wow, thats pretty cool. I am gonna check it out!
I was waiting for something like this!! Yayyyy
Great!
Though I feel I become reliant on these tools too much... sometimes I do it all manually just to refresh the skills.
I Totally Agree With Doing Things Manual At Times. I Made This More For The New Guys Who Aren't Really Sure About All That Code. They Can Use This To Be Rest Assured Things Will Go Well. While Still Able To Learn About Android.
Figures after I spend 8 hours figuring out how to do everything this comes out. Nice work! It was kinda cool learning how to use the cmd code though.
I'm Sorry Guys I Missed Something In The Code And It Opened An Extra Browser Window. Download Link Has Been Updated, Just Unzip And Replace The Files.
Well this just made my decision real easy... Thank you so much

As far as I'm concerned a necessity as these tools aren't always going to be available for every phone you get.

Agreed. The hardest part was understanding what the directions ment not knowing anything about using adb. I had some personal help from a few members which helped me understand but it made it that much more worth it knowing I kind of figured it out on my own. Thanks again to the people who helped me and those that have written threads with directions!
Nice tool you've put together. I'll try it out after work. It sounds dope.
I cant get past the first step.
I type "Unlock"
Then it says type the name of your browser ie: Chrome-Unlock
So I type "Chrome-Unlock"
and it just repeats itself.
Any help?

Same here. Will keep messing around with it a bit.
Now I can go into the next step, option2, which seems to be somewhat of a repeat option 1. Thinking maybe option one kicks off the process of the htcdev and then option 2 is when business begins since it wants the device hooked up and ready for action. Will hold off for verification just to be sure.
I appreciate the work OP.
I Am So Sorry There's So Much Code I've Been Using Multiple Windows And Zipped Up The Wrong One. I Added A Zip With The 'exe' To Just Extract And Replace With The New Code. Keep Me Informed If Things Go Wrong. This Issue Was Just The '-' In All Three Names. Case Sensitive Sucks. Again I Apologize This Is My First Program Using MSDOS Code. Not Bad For 1 Week Of Studying.
No worries... updates mean you are actively working to make it better.
The 22Mb File Has Been Updated Was Missing 2 Files.
When I open the tool it says... "Make sure you have placed the files in the correct place"
What is this referring too?

[Q] Do I have to do a factory data reset for every new rom?

DISCLAIMER: It seems I, and all the other newbies, have to add this to the top of our posts. Yes, I have tried searching for my answer, and no, I did not find it quickly. I prefer the speed and intimacy of human interaction, as well as the fact that I usually learn new things that I would not have from a simple search. If I offend you by dirtying up your forums with a repeat question, please just ignore this thread entirely, I don't want to hear it. If I offend any mods by asking a repeat question, I apologise, please lock this thread and I'll be on my merry way
So I've got the base CM7 working on my Bell MB860, and I love it. I finally have HDMI mirroring, my phone's boot time is 1/10th of what it was before, I don't have any bloatware anymore... these people are getting a donation from me! And to think that some people expect you to pay $1.99 for a flashlight app on Google Play, and the Cyanogenmod is completely free... I just have a few questions:
1) Since I lost my backup of my stock ROM (CWM told me it made the backup just fine before I flashed it, CWM did NOT tell me it corrupted the MFT of my SD card to a point where even R-Studio could not recover the raw data), I just made a backup of the working CM7 installation. Am I correct in that the backup is stored in sdcard\\clockworkmod\backup? And is the timestamp on it supposed to not be adjusted for time zone? Just trying to make sure I have the right backup selected, but the time stamp is 4 hours before when I actually made the backup.
2) I would like to try out some of the ROMs based on CM7. I hear MROM is pretty good. But is there an easier way to install new roms than doing a factory data reset, and then reinstalling all my apps and reconfiguring all my settings for every new rom?
Other 2) And what's all this about downgrading your SBF version can hardbrick your device, would downgrading my CM version do the same?
3) Why do dogs have cold, wet noses?
Thanks in advance for anyone who donates their time to read and answer my questions!
You only have to wipe when switching to a different ROM "flavor". When upgrading to a new version of a ROM, a wipe is not necessary unless the upgrade instructions say otherwise. Or, you could go with the inverse logic - don't wipe unless absolutely necessary, ie. apps are crashing and/or malfunctioning after flashing.
You might also want to try Titanium Backup, it helps with transferring apps and user data to a new ROM.

You will soon learn it is completely irrelevant what you do or do not prefer. If you want to be a part of a community, you have to adhere to that community's rules. Here, that includes searching and reading on your own as much as you can, with opening a new thread being the very last resort. People have put tremendous effort into writing tutorials and explanations and building compendiums and knowledge databases, asking the same question over and over again basically means all their effort was completely wasted. They have done so specifically to avoid every single newbie asking the same questions again.

I do not wish to be a part of any community that treats newbies asking repeat questions with such hostility. If anything, it helps make it easier to find the answer to your question if there is more than one thread asking that question. Part of the problem is that there are so many tutorials and explanations and knowledge databases that after about 30 minutes of trying to search for my answer, I simply give up. I didn't ask anyone to write a tutorial, if they feel their time was wasted, that's their problem. It is very sad to see that every single time someone asks a question, they almost always preface it with a statement to the effect of "I tried searching, but...". There's very little gain to be made by telling someone to "go use the search function and stop asking repeat questions". You make a newbie feel unwelcome, and make it harder for them to learn, at the expense of having a slightly tidier forum, and sensitive tutorial writers not having their feelings hurt.
You too should know that it is irrelevant to me what people like that prefer. I honestly would prefer no help at all, to that kind of 'help'. I would prefer to have my account banned, than to have some punk think that they can treat me like sh*t just because my Join Date and Post Count are less than theirs.

Not sure how others feel like, but personally I think this is not so much about keeping "the precious forum clean", more like "give a man a fish" vs. "teach a man to fish". Not quite the best approach, I agree, but this kind of attitude (sometimes viewed as aggressive or hostile) does indeed often make people search (or search more), and then often times they do find the answer they've been looking for, written down in plain sight. And then they do it again, this time on their own. And so in due time they're not only able to find all the info they need, but they're also able to teach others to do the same. It's not even just about this forum, being able to research properly is IMO a very useful skill in general.
On the other hand, there is indeed a set of "very well known facts" around here, and anyone asking about them is immediately seen as a noob with little to no regard for the community and with either poor search skills or just plain lazy. This "ellitistic" attitude seems to plague most hi-tech communities sooner or later, and I agree it is not a good thing. I myself have been guilty of it, but I'm trying to get rid of it.
Anyway, that is just my personal opinion and view of the situation. I by no means own this forum and generally I'm trying to not tell people what to do, just point them in the right direction. I'm just trying to give you an insight of how communities like this function. I'm a part of another (highly technical) forum and the general atmosphere there is very comparable to here, so it's safe to assume that that is just how things go in communities like this. You can adhere to the same rules or you can choose to be hated because you don't, but you won't ever change the mindset.
Anyway, enough off-topic.

You don't need to complete a factory reset if you're going to a completely new ROM. You simply need to process a data and cache wipe in CWM. Use titanium backup, call log restore, SMS restore, and APN settings restore before wiping. That'll make the migration process much easier and seamless. It takes time, but it eliminates a few layers of complication during the process. Upload your backups to google drive or Dropbox as well as to your desktop.
About your disclaimer: I completely understand your frustration. However, including such a vociferously rebellious statement atop each thread that you post invites a negative reaction. And doing so isn't going to change the social dynamics of this community. It simply disrupts the integrity of our discussions. Simply search for your answer. If that fails to satisfy your needs, post a new thread. Ignore those who respond in a unhelpful manner. If they're not acknowledged, they're powerless. By specifically addressing and acknowledging that demographic during each post, you're inviting their hostility into the discussion.
Yes, there are great compendiums of technological knowledge available to us on XDA. However, a forum search engine hardly qualifies as a great organizer for such a repository. So, we will encounter redundant threads guys. Deal with it.
