the simplest, yet most effective, way to reject permissions of an app is LBE security from the play store. it requires root.
you can set all kinds of permissions for each and every app you have. simply set facebook's location request to deny and it will not use it anymore.
If the App crashed, try to find a pdroid version for your firmware. But afaik there's no working for ics atm

the problem is not that the app crashes. It just bothers me that FB app is constantly using the gps while i see no use for it at all (other than draining the battery)

This was happening with me aswell and I fixed it. Go to Applications > Facebook and Clear Data. After clearing data, uninstall the application. Then install it again via Google Play and turn off the location. Make sure it's the latest version of facebook

I've found a few battery culprits in the attachment below I think,
com.google.android.gsf
com.google.android.apps.maps
I'm guessing these are google services. I've never touched google maps before either so i don't know why it's processing in the background.
Any way to uninstall these or stop them from processing?
Could I control what opens at startup too?

Maps you can delete if you have better navi app or you're not using it.

the GSF- google service frame wrk is required for google apps like Map, gtalk, playstore,googleplay apps to wrk properly ma8 and deleting the same will ensure that these apps will not function properly
also alternatively u can post the BBS log file to check what else is draining ur batt so that the same can be taken care of if u have any batt drain issue ofcourse
I think its the network location service. If im not wrong this should solve it: go to settings location services, uncheck everything, or you know, read, then go to applications, running and force stop maps. It wont start again. Maybe on reboot. But it will only remain in memory, no more wakeups.

i've disabled maps so that is no longer an issue. The google service frameworks, i've disabled via Droidwall which is a firewall app.
Now under BBS i still get the alarm wakelocks but it's saying it keeps trying to reconnect (obviously because i've put a firewall under it)
it doesn't seem to be stopping anything, but would this save more battery or should i just leave it and let gsf be?
What do you mean by i disabled maps? How do you disable maps app. Do you mean force stop it? It isnt neceserraly the app maps, but some service that use it! So disabeling it wont help, for it will start again.
I think its worse now that you made a firewall rule. Now it will constantly try to reconnect. Also if you block google framework weird things will happen!
Did you try DISABLEING GOOGLE LOCATION SERVICE in phone settings? That way apps like maybe whatsapp or something idk wont be able to acces maps anymore.

It's not like that. Just like whatsapp which stays always on to keep you connected, Google maps also stays on even though you don't open it as a system background process although you don't need it. The best way to remove this is to root your phone and uninstall this 'bloatware'

There's no need to delete Google Maps. You just need to regain some control from the app. By default it sends location data to Google. This periodic data 'seepage' also seems to have the affect of 'waking' the phone from deep sleep. Silly, especially since Google wrote the damn OS.
Anyway, this issue has been covered in other threads; you should search, there are more precise instructions out there
...or you can rely on my questionable memory; as I recall-
- Go into Google Maps
- Choose Settings
- Choose Location Settings
- Un-check "Report From This Device"
Also, make sure (on same screen) that Enable Location Sharing is NOT checked and that any of the other location-specific items on the same screen are un-checked.
If you're wondering about 'Location Reporting' under Background Location Reporting, mine is set to 'Detect your location' (thus I think this setting is OK).

You could the free app Greenify as well. Anything that runs in the background without your permission will get shut down by it.

It's desirable (to many) to have at least some background apps able to run/consume data. Yes, you can disable all (or ration out when they're 'allowed' to run, but then you lose out on the full capabilities of the device.
Trust me, having come from Sprint and a GS2, I am well versed in shutting down and restricting apps. What I LOVE about my GS4 is that I can let virtually all apps run (within reason, and w/exception of Gmaps as noted above) and I still have 28-40 hour battery cycles.
Just be wary of 'out of control' apps. Tame them, freeze them, or delete them, but only as a last resort would I disable all background apps.

I agree. Just saying. Those apps that you don't want to run, you can tell Greenify which ones to disallow access. A one stop shop, as it were.

My bad. For some reason I thought your response said "disable all background apps". Thx for the app tip.
It used to be the market would separate apps that were approved for auto update from those that had disabled auto update set. One could then simply hit the Update All (for the group) button and it would update ONLY the apps that were auto update enabled. Over the past few months Play Store has changed their behavior in that it no longer separates the apps and will only enable auto updates for everything or nothing.
How can I hide or otherwise prevent these few apps that I do not want to update from being in the play store update list? As it is now, I have to selectively update each individual app from the list, skipping the few apps I do not want updated.

Actually yes,... I think. I'd suggest making backups of your apps (TitaniumBU or other).
Open Play Store
Menu: Settings
Enable Auto Updates (Mine is set to when on WIFI only)
Go back to main Play store page.
Menu: My Apps
Under Installed, locate any app that you wish to change and select it, this opens the App Details page.
Menu: Auto-update untick the checkbox.
Still trying to confirm this condition: Seems that if you manually update an app that is not set to auto-update, it will possibly reset the auto-update flag to 'Enabled'

Hi!
Sorry to bump this old thread, but I am kind of fighting with a similar issue, my problem is,
the apps I don't want to auto update are google apps(Keep/Youtube/Gtalk), which are replaced
by black counterparts from Team Blackout(with exception of Gtalk, I just don't like Hangouts)
and of course there is no "disable auto update" option with google system apps.
As of this date, I can see no valid option for selectively update the installed app catalogue, this
might be a decision from Google's part to push out the obsolete apps by force, which is understandable,
but I think there should be an option to have this feature.
Now at this point I am updating the apps manually app by app, and of course
with about 200 plus apps installed a complete PITA.

I found this thread looking for a way to selectively disable auto-update. I found that by going to the Play Store on my phone (under settings, I already had auto update on wifi only enabled), selecting apps/my apps, then choosing a specific app, then touching the soft menu key brings up a checkbox for auto -update. Uncheck to disable auto-update. This works for Google apps too like Hangouts, GMail (2 apps that I checked), etc.

Up until a day or two ago, I found the same thing - I could hit the soft menu button in the Play Store, and there would be an option to check or uncheck Auto-Update for that specific App. But I just checked again, wanting to take advantage of that, and it didn't come up any more.
Can anybody confirm that this functionality is gone again?
I'm on Verizon, with a Stock 4.2.2 Galaxy Note 3, non-rooted.

ETA: I rebooted my phone, and the ability to check/uncheck auto-update with the soft menu is back. Strange, but at least it's there again.

I found this thread - title says it all.
I have Google Maps 7.5.0 installed, therefore it's listed in "Updates" all the time.
I do not have automatic updates activated, but i like to use the "update all" button in the play store.
Is there a way to disable the listing of Google Maps in "Updates"?

I don't think you can disable that display in Google Play. It knows what apps you have and will let you know when there is an update for them, whether you want to know or not! The main thing is that you can generally decide whether you want the update or not. I prefer it that way. It gives me a choice.

Yes, I like that it's reminding me of updates.
But the new version of the app is not working for me and if I hit the updated-all button on accident, I have to reverse the app again. Happens too often. Would be awesome to have a checkbox á la "Don't display updates for this app"

Titanium backup will help us. The option name is : "dettach/attach app from market" . This option do what it says. So no update offer from play store after.

Yes, it did the trick for a while - and the app (Facebook app - the old version which did not have the annoying bugs) I detached from the market vanished from the available updates list. But the very next morning it was back in the same list :crying::crying:
That's right, it only works for a couple of hours. Haven't found another solution

I think I have found the simple answer:
1. In Google Play Store settings enable all applications to update automatically on wi-fi.
2. Next, individually click each of the apps you do not want to update automatically. On each app's update page, there is a menu button on the top right corner. Click it and deselect auto update for that app.
Now all these disabled apps will not auto update along with the other generally permitted apps.

With the new Facebook update they've now got tracking of your off Facebook activity. Its in your settings and it's called, Off Facebook Activity.
Don't believe me? Check, it's deffinatelly there now in latest update.
I know can turn it off but them being able to see my other apps and to see what I do on there just annoys me.

Also some things I've googled have ended up getting my email address as got emails about what I searched.

I've uninstalled it for now, didn't need titanium though.
Can use Facebook via a browser instead.

I did disable all Facebook permissions but still had my off of Facebook apps information. Who knows if other apps are doing the same thing, I block all unneeded permissions in all my apps and keep them frozen until I need to use them. Thanks for your reply.
Seeing how these threads are sadly dead I'm not expecting a lot from this. My stock weather app does not update automatically. I have to open the app and pull down to refresh. The app location permission only gives me the option for "only allow while using app". I need to allow it to always use location. Any ideas???

Had the same issue. This app worked for me and I tried several. The widget automatically updates.
