light sensor - Huawei MediaPad, T-Mobile SpringBoard

hi all, I noticed that light sensor doesnt work properly, when I go from dark to light area, the brightness increases but when I go from light to dark area the brightness wont decrease, on honeycomb it worked properly, anybody else experiences this problem?

Same here, it goes bright but does not decrease.
I use the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInJ1YmJlcmJpZ3BlcHBlci5EaXNwbGF5QnJpZ2h0bmVzcyJd
make an invisible slider on the edge of screen to adjust brightness.

is there any way to make it work properly?

Don't think so. Its pretty much unusable now.

There are lots of negative comments about light sensor, but i have to say it works well to me on ICS. Could be possibly massive amount of defected devices.

Lightsensor doesn't work for me either - too bad, hope it will be corrected.
Perhaps it's because I'm running ICS "General Channel".

Do the sensor dim the light in the same session for you?
Here it turns up the light but not down again.

Same here, adjusting upwards works fine, but it doesn't adjust downwards in low light conditions.

I have tried two apps that turns the light down again, custom auto brightness and lux auto brightness.
One small problem. The pad will crash on pattern unlock after sleep. I Also the light sensor will not work s after wake up sometimes.

I'm guessing no one has had any luck with this issue but I figure I'd necro the thread anyways. My light sensor sucks also. I used 'Android Sensor Box' to get the values coming out of the sensor. It only displays either 40 lux or 280 lux which is obviously not right. This is on Cyanogen 9, stock t-mobile ICS and the rooted international gingerbread(can't remember which one exactly).
So I was wondering if anyone who owns one of these has ever gotten a sensor value that makes any sense.
thanks

nope,
I use instead display brightness https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness&hl=no
create an invisible brightness slider on theedge of the screen.

Try using custom auto brightness with the auto brightness on (there's a setting in that app that disabled the system auto brightness at screen on. Turn it off).
The original kernel only recognized 3 light levels. If you use bart's kernel it will recognize 6 levels.
Yes, I think there's a software problem because both app (lux and cua) crash hard in HMP, but I don't think fixing it is a priority.

How to use custom auto brightness without crashing the tablet.
There are 2 options that should be followed, other settings can be adjusted to your liking.
1. In preferences, Check Use pulsed sensor mode. Basically this option will make the app read the sensor itself instead of listening the sensor value given from the system.
2. In advanced preferences, set the sensor update speed to either half sec or 1 sec. I tried normal, but the app won't read the sensor value, so probably the slow normal maximum setting only works if you get the sensor value from the system.
You can set disable system auto brightness. I recommend it before because the setting was a "hack" which was making the system read the brightness value thus the app can get that value. Right now it's recommended that you check the disable system auto brightness.

[Q] Change light lv setting for lowest brightness.

Is there a way to change where the light sensor readings trigger a change in brightness level?
Currently the phone change from lowest brightness to higher when reads 30lux and change to lowest brightness when reads 10lux.
It's annoying for the phone to change to lowest brightness when i still in a light up room but just pointed away from light sources. And also it's also not switching to higher brightness when i need it in a dim environment.
So, anyone know of some app that can adjust these values? Or point me some direction to work on it.
Light Sensor is Ok, but...
Using z-device test I compared the light sensor readings between SGS2 and the NS. The light sensor seems to be correct. Still, at 10 lux, the SGS2 is setting the brightness value to its lowest and the NS, not.
I'm starting to believe that there is a a problem between the mapping from the light sensor and the brightness level. If I'm not mistaken this can only be fixed/adapted within the ROM.

As from what i read, S2 seems to divide the screen brightness into 5 level
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235212&highlight=auto+brightness
However, the mapping of these five level to it's correspondence light sensors reading seems to be odd.
let's just call lowest brightness as lv1 and highest as lv5,
The phone will stay on lv1 whenever the sensors read from 0-30lux
The phone will drop to lv1 whenever the sensors read 10lux.
The gaps is just too wide to give a pleasant viewing experiences, often stay on lv1 brightness while i'm no longer in pitch black area.
if there is a way to change this, i would prefer to set it as
stay on lv1 whenever sensors read 0-5lux
drop to lv1 whenever sensors read 2lux (the lowest brightness lv is only feasible for me when inside a pitch black environment)
Since there is a file determine it's brightness value for each lv, so i'm thinking there should also one for it's mapping.

Auto brightness

Does anyone have a solution to auto brightness issue?
Even in the darkest room, the lowest light level is "medium" and not low! Its excellent setting when using phone outdoors but in dark room or at night its just too bright. Is my phone broken or is it general windows phone setting?

on my titan, the auto brightness behaviour is erratic and sometimes goes too low.
the camera is one of the issue triggers. after every return from a photo session, the screen goes to a lower brightness.
also, sometimes it happens when unlocking the phone but i don't know what triggers it. then suddenly the screen would return to its normal brightness after a few seconds, although not always.
i suppose it's a driver issue...

so you get the autobrightness to go as low as 'low' set manually? - I tried it but even after camera the lowest brightness I am getting is same as 'medium' when set manually!

no, not that low only lower.
but you are right, even in complete darkness the screen won't go to its lowest setting...
Yes same issue here.
Automatic can go a little bit lower than medium, but not much. Too bright in dim environement.
For general use, i would like to have a preset between low and medium
Since these days many people like ultra bright screens (and ultra loud sound) i am not sure HTC will try to fix this "issue".
I just hope Microsoft can add a brightness slider in the future. (Or bility to set the min auto and max auto levels)
Btw, do you know why camera mode go into max brightness ? This is a little harsh indoor.

Yes that behaviour is very strange too! I think it's present only in the Titan. Some other windows phone manage the camera brightness a little better. But then I think increased brightness while using camera sort of makes it little pleasant when using it outdoors. But indoors as you mentioned, it's a bit too harsh brightness!
I think it's the light sensor that doesn't work properly. Some places/forums mentioned about issues with various HTC driverseven after those 2 softwares updates we received in Nov-early Dec.
In daylight, the auto brightness works wonderfully for me,I never change it.
But in a fairly dark room,it's too bright and most of the time,I set it to low
I usually set it to medium... and set to low by myself by night.
I have sent a message to HTC (via theirs contact/ticket system) about the "can be improved" auto brightness, and "camera set brightness to max" issues.
Better than nothing.
Since this is a easily reproductible problem, maybe they can take a look if they receive several messages about this.
I wonder if the screen going to max brightness with camera may have something to do with the "HTC Camera modes" addon ? (who knows..)
But i don't see how to remove it. I even can't find it on the marketplace (under HTC section).
I have same issue, I get blinded when I check the time on my phone at night
It was there even before camera modes update was applied by HTC. So unlikely

Obviously, the brightness go to max too when using skype with video.
Hope they will notice and fix it.
Trying to talk to HTC customer service is especially unhelpful here in france.
They have absolutely no knowledge of theirs WP7 products
(whatever the problem encountered)
Now that we have unlocked roms, any way to tweak the auto brightness ?

I've tried all 4 ROMs and they have the same behaviour as stock ROM at the moment. But it might be useful looking into the registry threshold values. I know there is some sort of home brew app that lets us set the volume increase in 10s, 20s, 30s or 50s. So a regedit might be somewhere, will dig around myself since you've reminded me again

[Q] calibrating auto bright control

Has anyone come up with a way for me to calibrate auto brightness? Would like to use it, but it turns display all the way down, and I like it a bit brighter. I'm rooted but locked. Thanks
There's an app called Lux Auto Brightness that allows you to set brightness at various light levels, including min brightness. I use it on my phone and works very well. Not sure on a tablet but worth a try.

Auto Brightness is completely broken

I just do not understand the implementation of Auto Brightness in G2.
If I go out, it never increases the brighness even by one bit. I have to swipe it up.
Same when I go inside.
Whats the point of Having auto brightness if it does not work.
Try lux dash app my friend.
Much better
I typically will point the front camera towards the sun when I go outside to get it to adjust. Usually works pretty quickly, but sometimes it fails.

The way the auto brightness works in LG is different from what we see on other devices. If you flashing a custom AOSP based rom you will see auto brightness working fine as we are accustomed.
Agree, stock doesn't work at all

It works actually..Just that it's somehow retarded..And so i have switch over to fixed brightness instead..
Another option, although not automatic, is to swipe down and use the brightness toggle. Each time you press the button it will scroll through from 50%, 90%, 0%, 50%, 90%, 0%, etc.
I usually use my phone at 50% but if I'm in direct sunlight or want to show off my G2 screen I will then hit the brightness button to make it 90%. No idea why it doesn't automatically default to 100%, though.

I can not say I have noticed autobrightness glitches (European D802, stock rom).
I think LG2's autobrightness system is great. You can use the slider in pulldown menu to adjust your base brightness preference and it is auto according to that.
Far better than other phones with "fixed auto", i.e. my previous OneX+, where the screen is too bright in low-light conditions.
Yes LUX works...but so does the stock auto brightness setting. So if you want to use the stock version here is what you need to remember. The slider is the BASE level...which means that if you set it to 50% then that is the LOWEST the screen brightness will go when in a dark room. You can set it lower but in my testing I feel that anything lower than 40% does not lower it any more than that... YMMV.
Then, after setting your low end base, the screen will automatically get brighter when you go out into the sun. Now whether it will ever go to 100% on its own or not I do not know. But I find that with my VZ variant set to 50% base, when I go out into the brightest sun the screen brightens up to the point where I can see it just fine. One other observation is that the stock version is a little slower at making the adjustment than LUX is, but only by a few seconds from start to finish.

That might be, but the difference from full sunlight to complete darkness is almost nothing, no matter what base % you set it to. The auto brightness is just utterly completly useless. Giving Lux a try.
I found yet another brightness app works great.

Stock autobrightness works, but it's slow and sometimes it won't change screen brightness for reasons unknown.
Lux is much better. I'm not sure about free version, but with full version you can customize brightness curve and lower reaction times so it's really quick compared to stock autobrightness.
+1 for lux with autobrightness on wake

Second Screen dimming

Just got the V10 and the second screen dims after 2 or 3 seconds after turning off the main screen. Is there a way to adjust the timing when the second screen dims? The dimmed second screen is almost unreadable because it is so dim.
Ditto, the idea that this is a replacement for a notification LED is really damaged by the dimming. (It's not just me that bought the phone based on that idea, right?) What I've found so far:
With the screen brightness set to 0, the second screen dims fully a few seconds after sleeping. Icons become about as noticeable as dust reflections.
With the screen brightness set to 100, the second screen follows the ambient light sensor after sleeping. Under bright light it turns itself up to the point where it's useable.
I've been playing with all the LEDs that Light Flow sees, but at least without root, nothing has any effect. I might look through the /sys files later. We probably need to get root first to figure this out.
On auto brightness it seems to be that the device adjusts the dimmed display for the ambient lighting? It's not the easiest thing in the world to see, but it's certainly not hard for me to see what notifications I have. I really prefer this over a colored LED.
Light Flow settings
For what it's worth, here's my current setup, now that the T-Mobile H901 is rooted. This does no one without root any good, and I don't know how it would translate to similar LED managers. I've been using Light Flow since the Sapphire (MyTouch 3G).
Light Flow device settings: check direct mode, root mode, and run every command as root. The Nexus 5 force reset option is checked by default and I don't know if that's relevant (no calls yet). Everything else in the menu is unchecked.
Let Light Flow control lcd-backlight-ex.
In a notification, set that "LED" to Solid and to 255 brightness. Check Enable Mixer and App controlled flash. With that last setting, the app will reset the brightness every few seconds even if the system dimmed it due to an ambient light change.
Now I need to edit some notification icons to be big and colorful. I wonder how this will impact battery life? Now the app is going to be awake all the time.
I've noticed that today on auto brightness the second screen will increase in light but not much. It also is not as smoth of a transition as on main display. It kinda jumps up real quick..
Yes for me I've noticed on Auto brightness the second screen will dim in a dark room and if you turn off your phone while in that room then come out... The second screen is still dim.... It's like th second screen doesn't respond to the light sensors at all unless the main screen is on.

It would have been nice if lg included the capability to change the second screen settings such a brightness or text color.

Another one of many things that it would be cool to see baked into a custom stock rom. Good stuff. I wonder if Cloudyfa might come over and cook on this awhile. I have always loved his stock Roms....

Color would be cool. A classic CRT bright/lime green, for instance, would probably show up much better than the white.
We need to get on their forums with these ideas. Maybe some will get squeezed into an update
An app which turns off auto dim in case screen is off would be pretty much help. Maybe I'll develop one.
