Is it worth upgrading to the Galaxy s3? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I really like my note because of the gorgeous screen but Im thinking about possibly upgrading to the s3 but is it worth it?
Specs wise, S3 is not much better, correct?
Is quadcore worth the upgrade? I heard that the battery life for s3 is pretty good. The battery life for ghetto note is not too impressive.
So what do you guys think?

O just read that Canada s111 will not have the quad but rather the duel. Plays beeter with light I think (don't quote me)

This falls into the shiny category.
The S3 is new, but has some dev work explosion atm. The note has a huge screen and spen.
Go anđ try a smaller screen for a while, you'll get annoyed quickly.
If you are going to get the S3, import it, as lte in canada isn't really anywhere significant.
I would stick with the note and wait for the note2 or whatever replacement some big dog lets loose.

Sell me your Note if you upgrade!

well i bought my note mainly for the size of the screen
anything less than 5.3 is not an upgrade for me
since you already have a note, all new phones that come out have the advantage of using the latest technology. once you get the s3,in 3 month, something better, maybe even a note 2 might release..... see where im going?? The only advantage is the screen: most new phones have the technology, most dont come close to the note screen size though. Like the 2020 iphone might fly in the sky on its own, but still doubt it will have at least a 5.3" screen (since they only make one phone and it has to appeal to ALL of its users)

I might could work up a "upgrade frenzy" for a Gnote II since, by the time it would be ready for market, it should be ready to intergrate enough new tech with even a sweeter 5.3" screen to make it too enticing to ignore. Until that day arrives, I plan on teasing as much pleasure from this gspot. ..(damn spell check),um er, from this gnote..as can be had by mortal man...... : ) ....

Screen is way too big. Really have to wonder if they think it will sell well.
I found it hard getting use to 4.2 inches (4.0 with sgs was perfect).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I will upgrade with pleasure . Don't think it is really that big . Think about what is inside of it. Think about it like it is a little computer with a phone function. Would you prefer to take your laptop or a little bit overgrown multimedia device that gives you so much? I love my SG2 and if it grows a little... Huh... So be it. There will be more to love ;-).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I'd probably wait for nexus prime next. The upgrade of this one is too incremental to worth a full upgrade from an already top of the line phone.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
If I get a refund for my S2 and if they upped the quality on the screen then I would get this instead.
its not really an upgrade is it?? it is just an lte version of the sgs2
i wont be rushing to buy it , there will always be better devices coming , the sgs2 is still a lot more powerfull then pretty much every phone on the market
imagine what will be coming in 6-12 months time?? thats when i would think about upgrading
quad core is just round the corner and it looks immense i wont be rushing out to buy another dual core when i already have a top of the range one and with tech moving so fast both will be outdated in 6 months when quad core hits the market
its just my opinion but unless you need a screen that is slightly bigger why would you bother ''upgrading'' to this???
Galaxy s was the perfect size for me..s2 is large enough for my taste..no way to buy a 4,5 screen size phone...
its 0.2" bigger. I dont think very much bigger. The rounded edges is going to give advantage and the size wont look more compared to Original SGS22..
It definitely looks much better than Original. Its designed like Glaxy S and I liked the shape of that one. The back cover looks the same as the original one. they didnt mention more about the Display, but battery wise its a big advantage too.
The good thing is that it would slash down the price of Original SGS2...
I thought this was supposed to be announced at IFA...
Too soon, would rather wait at least until Nexus Prime before upgrading.
No thank you, I don't need a tablet.
Meh, maybe if audio recording is better then on sgs2 (which shouldn't be too hard).
will wait next year. There will be LTE advanced Galaxy S3. Besides I have invested on accessories for S2.

So S2-Plus in Nov and S3 in Jan-Feb?
doesnt look as good as the sgs2 imo
It's just too soon. I plan to have SGS2 at least for 2 years.
But 4.5" ? I'm fine with that. I'm starting to feel my SGS2 is a bit small
Upgrade it no but consider to buy it for my wife

For me even 4.3" is a bit too big, so 100% no for 4,5" screens from me. I'd say 4" is a sweet spot for mobile phones.
Bigger screen ... . but most of the rumors seem to indicate that the resolution is still the same as for S2 at 800×480.

Anyone returning their G2 for this?
I am really thinking bout waiting it out-- the gpu on that beast is 50% faster.
It'll take a few months (4-7 months(?)) for AT&T to get this phone.. unless you plan on buying it unlocked/international
I've spent way too long waiting for my GS2. I'll be keeping it for at least a year if not 18 months until my next upgrade. The Prime looks awesome but at some point you have to just enjoy what ya got... for a little while at least.
Nope. Quite happy with this little awesome monster.

depends on how soon it comes out for ATT. if it comes out before Nov. 2nd i'll be the first in line to do an exchange.
Not sure how the curve screen will work on flat surface, like lay flat on top of table.
Also, i think 4.65" might be a little too big, lol!

Yea, looks like vz exclusive.. I bought the gsII already but i still have still the 3rd of Nov to return it-- so we will see.
Kind of odd of Samsung to release something so much more powerful than the sgsII when the SGSII was just released a week ago.

If it's compatible with AT&T and I like it enough I'll buy it unlocked, like I did with the Nexus One. I'll probably give the Galaxy S2 to my wife or keep it myself for fun. :3
I don't like the way it curves...
Infuse is already too big. Can't see a 4.65" phone being very usable.

You guys have to remember that the screen may be 4.6", but there won't be any capacitive buttons; all screen and minimal bezel (according to rumors, and how ICS is supposedly programmed). So the actual phone may not be that much larger than the SGSII. Which imho, is awesome: Large screen with minimal increase in phone size; best of both worlds.
There's nothing on the Prime that would entice me to return my SGSII for it. If I didn't already have my
SGSII this would most likely be a different story, but the bigger screen wouldn't sell me on it as its perfect already on the SGSII, IMO. The battery, however, if it were to truly be 2000mah or above probably would.

Im opting for the prime as it has a bigger screen. My first android phone was the dell streak5.
And i love the big screen. I was actually hoping for the galaxy note but i dont knw when that will come out
Guys, the screen is the same size as the sgs2. Measure sgs2 with the buttons and you get 4.6.

Samsung Galaxy S III to feature 4.8-inch display

http://www.bgr.com/2012/02/25/samsu...ceramic-back-with-simultaneous-global-launch/
ALLEGEDLY
still too small after having my note for a while now
If the rumor of simultanous launch is true, I'd gladly skip the GNote. The 4.8" screen is perfect for me, comparable to GNexus's 4.65", both without physical buttons. I'm sure the screen will be Super AMOLED Plus HD. Anything less doesn't deserve the GS3 name.
I was actually all set to pull the trigger on the GNote today until I saw this. I live the size of the GNote, but really wish it was a quad core. Also for someone that goes through as much battery as me through a day (almost 2 full batterys on my skyrocket a day), I didnt want the hassle of taking the back off the phone constantly since people on here have implied it being very difficult. Might just do GS3 until the Note 2 comes out
If everything in that spec list is true.... I'm getting one.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I care a lot less about screen size than I do screen resolution. 1280x800 or 720p would be fine - anything less is useless on a screen that size. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up with the Note.
Also, I want to say I read that the photo in that article is a discredited 'shop-job, but I'm not sure. Having zero bezel around the edges of the phone would make it awfully difficult to hold and not create mis-clicks.
I'm pretty sure that's photoshop job but thin bezel is not new. HTC has two 4.7" phones with thin bezels, one for WP7, one for Android. None are being called too big by any reivewers

That's is a very subjective matter. I tried multiple GNotes at AT&T store. It certainly feeled sluggish in stock form compared to my GS2 in stock form with a lot of apps installed. GNote could have benefited a lot with a much beefier processor than the S3.
Interesting article. The ceramic and size info is indeed new and I have not heard any of that from my source
Right now we are expecting
4.65 hd screen and a new dual core, not quad.

These supposed spec leak articles are a joke, designed to drive traffic to those site. They just speculate on the incredibly obvious. What phone hasn't come out with a slightly larger screen, a bigger processor,a better camera more memory etc. Its a given that if you wait another six months you will always find a "better" device. "Super AMOLED Plus HD"..lol.

Mr.Ed,
I wonder what happened to that Skyrocket HD (a.k.a Galaxy S2 HD LTE in Korea)? If this rumor is true about the launch, it makes no sense to release the Skyrocket HD at all. So, if there is no upcoming release schedule for Skyrocket HD, we can assume GS3 is coming to US this summer.

According to a leaked AT&T road map, the skyrocket HD is suppose to be released at the end of Q1.
I'm not gonna get too excited about it at this point. I'm not too ready to move on to the next big thing, specially if it has a smaller screen. I just moved from the streak to the Note, and on paper this is about twice the phone that the Streak was. However in actual usage it's not that much faster, and in some cases more choppy.
It's a better phone, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that there's no point in waiting forever. There will always be something better on the horizon. And the Note meets my needs perfectly right now, and probly will for the next year

I doubt that one (probably imported from Korea) will have AT&T compatible LTE bands.
After getting used to the Note, I wouldn't want to downgrade to a smaller screen. I love how everything is huge on the Note. On my GNex, everything looks stupid small in comparison. I'd rather wait for the Note II with Exynos 5250.

Look at all the hype the Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime was getting just to find out you couldn't expand the memory, only went to Verizon, etc etc.... I messed with Note a day or so ago and it wasn't as bulky as I thought. I was more curious about development issues. The Skyrocket and the Hercules (i727 & T989) are basically the same phones so from the development side there are more behind them. Not sure if an SIM unlocked Note can work on T Mobile or if T Mo is going to offer the Note at all.

Do you have a link for the Note 2 or is it mostly just talk as of now?
I'm most interested in the ceramic back. If it is durable, I think that could create a really interesting new path for Samsung in terms of design. I can just imagine a smooth, matte finish feel that would feel super sexy and high quality. Not that Samsung hasn't achieved high quality design using their plastics, but I would be really excited to see what they could do with some other materials seeing as they have really proven that plastics can be used to create a rock solid device.

Well, there's going to be a Note 2 later this year, and it should have similar specs to the S3 with an even larger screen than the OG Note.

I just sold my Note i717 and am happy with my decision.
However, I am one of those who was never able to get used to the immense size of the Note, so if you like the overall size of the Note (or if the overall size isn't enough of a problem to outweigh the benefits of the huge screen), then you probably will want to hold off buying anything until Note 2 is out.
From as objective a standpoint as possible though, I have yet to find any major flaws with the S3 and although I that I was just downgrading the size of the device while making a lateral software move, I was wrong; the software additions on the S3 as well as the form and function of the S3 are top notch to the point where it's almost hard to believe both phones were released in the same calendar year.
Not sure how much that helps you as it seems like so much rambling when I reread it, but.... Lol

If we're to believe Samsung Display, the display arm of Samsung, which is actually a desperate company, there might not be a Note 3 as we know it. They're replacing both the Note 2 display, as well as the S3 display with a 1920x1080 4.99 inch panel this year. This according to Anandtech. I suppose we could see a curved OLED touting Note, but then again, flexible OLED yield isn't supposed to be good enough for production runs til 2014.
Unless they're keeping the display a secret, this is what most would expect. This doesn't mean that they'll have some other type of offering or combination to allow SPen functionality on say....the S4, but I wouldn't personally design a new chassis around an S4 and call it a Note.
I'd definitely choose the S3 at this point. The Development support will last significantly longer than it will for this device. Isn't it the most popular Android device ever? That is to say, more users often means more ROMs, the pressure to update and develop for it will be higher.
Since were not talking about an upgrade, its a no brainer.
But if you had to use an upgrade, or pay more than say....50-100 bucks (personal figure) I definitely wouldn't do it. A new generation of SoCs is just around the corner. Just as well, the GPU is much more powerful on the S3, but app support and UI/general performance isn't too much better now that we have 4.2 AOSP. And while an official JB is probably a couple months out, but it will bring most Note2 features home for us.
That's the current sitrep for both devices.

Personally I love my note and it's plenty fast with the stable roms out there. My gf has a S3 and it's a nice device and I can really see the appeal but it really depends on WHAT you plan on doing with it. I remote into computers and my home network. Work on servers all from my phone so moving to a smaller screen isn't what I'd do. It has the horsepower to show up plenty of phones and though it's a gen old with older hardware, I kept my 86 toyota camry longer than I've had this phone and THAT was a piece of crap.
But again it's all about needs and wants. If you feel that you need the faster phone and are willing to loose the screen size, I say go for it.

Agreed, with new phone announcements coming up soon it doesn't make sense to upgrade for any form of currency, but in a straight trade, it might be worth it.
