your carrier are not going to know much about rooting. They are customer service and sales people, not developers. Branding them useless because you have rooted is a bit strong.
However if you want help youre going to give more info
what rom?
what apps?
etc.....

Also: model number. Which is why I asked above if the OP is on T-mobile USA.
T-mobile USA's Galaxy SII is model SGH-T989, which is a completely different phone from the I9100, and has a different forum altogether.
This is the I9100 forum, which is the international model of Galaxy SII.

Hello,
Im fairly new here, used to own a Samsung Galaxy Portal and I got an SGS2 last friday . Excellent device and everything but one thing thats wrong, Its on T-Mobile. Everyone must agree with me that T-Mobile are fairly late with their branded firmware, updates and leave the handset users at a disadvantage. As a matter of fact, I don't know anyone who has actually recieved a T-Mobile Branded Firmware update thus far for any android device, whats the crack here? anyone have any insight on this?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
It is entirely possible to update the firmware, root and remove the network lock on your phone using the various threads on those topics. I am using XWKI4 on this SGSII which is now a generic XEU unit rather than TMU.

Hey guys and gals!!! I couldn't find answers to these question so I decided to ask.
basically i bought a galaxy s2 from a guy on craigslist and he said it was the international version but I have a feeling it's the Bell version, how do I check which version it is?
Next thing is that he said it was unlocked but I went ahead and used the app galaxy s _unlock. How do I know if it's unlocked?
and finally my final question- i'm gonna be gifting this to my dad who lives in India and Brunei (google it, most people have no clue where it is lol) so can he use it in India and Brunei? cause the last time my uncle bought a galaxy s from canada he then brought it to india and lost his cellphone signal forever.
any help will be appreciated
Thank
Most people know where India is.
Go to Menu-Settings-About Phone. Or hook it up to your computer and start up Samsung Kies. It will tell you what model it is.
Put a sim card not from Bell into it. If it works, then it's unlocked.

Hey guys, I got t-mobile and it's time to upgrade. Now I already have an HD2 and loved it since launch but I think it's time to move on, and this seems to be the most updated phone they are offering. So how is it?
Does this phone have any os options like the leo or anything neat about it?
About os options we have boot2geko(very pre-alpha),blacktrack 5,android ofcourse(ics and gb)

Okay so I have to give up all the openess of the Leo then? Which I guess is fine, I only really used android. Was fun to test all the other ones and see them work.
If you are into development then go for galaxy nexus
But if you want the beast then buy sgs2
But make sure you are buying i9100 and not other i9100G or i777 or some other
You can also wait for sgs3 or other new phones

I've had the Leo since launch, I am kind of tired of it. It's showing it's age lately with newer stuff and it's starting to have hardware issues from massive use. Why that model number?
I "wanted" one of those samsung notes but tmob doesn't get them.

If you get t-mobile one then you won't have international sgs2
i9100 is international one
So get this unlocked international one

If he plans on staying with T-Mobile USA as his carrier, than if he gets the I9100, he will only be able to get Edge data speeds on T-Mobile's network.
OP, you should probably be aware of that. This is the reason T-Mobile USA has their own variant of the Galaxy S II, which is the SGH-T989. (which, incidentally, has a separate forum)
I switched from HD2 to SGS2 and i love it... My Sgs2 run perfect only what i miss are the many customs roms... But indie and rgui make perfect roms...

Yes I plan to stay with them because as it is I pay I think 60ish a month for unlimited everything. So I am happy with that setup. I still laugh when verizon trys to sell me because we get a discount with them, for the same deal on there network it's 130 dollars a month after the discount. WTF.
Yes being stuck on just edge would kill me, I use my phone for skype A LOT.

If you don't want to be stuck on edge, then you DON'T want this phone. (GT-I9100) This phone simply doesn't have the hardware to get the right frequencies to get a faster mobile data connection on T-Mobile USA's network. You are probably looking at getting the T-Mobile USA Galaxy S II variant. (SGH-T989)
While many general questions about the phone may apply to both models, you really should be asking your questions in the SGH-T989 forum. I linked it above.
EDIT to add: You may ask why I'm referring you to that forum... well, the hardware on the two phones are COMPLETELY different. They receive different frequencies, and they have different SoC/chipset/GPU. So firmwares, kernels, rooting methods - all different.
Since yesterday I switched too, from HTC HD2 to SGSII.I bought the ceramic white version of GT-I9100 and it looks awesome,I`m very happy with it.The HD2 is still working fine(it has hundreds of flashes I guess..haha),but its getting old.Now I coming with a question, where I can find a tutorial of rooting, installing custom ROMS procedure for SGSII.The HD2 forums has tutorials to start from zero.

Check the stickies in the General section. There are tons of links in a roll up sticky post.
I think you shouldn't buy the T-mo variant as there is a lot less development on those variants as most of the devs have the international variant which is the I9100.
But then again that's what I think.
Make you'r decision carefully.

But the dude said he is staying with T-Mobile. So AGAIN, if he buys the I9100, he will be stuck with Edge speeds on T-Mobile. Which he also said he doesn't want. So if he wants a Galaxy S II that works with high speed on T-Mobile USA's network, he HAS to get the T-Mobile USA variant.
Edit to add: OR I've heard he could get an unlocked AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket and flash T-Mobile's modems to it. But why the heck would you want to do that? Those two phones are essentially the same (hardware-wise) anyways. And it's still not the I9100.
I completely get you'r point, but if he is a flashaholic then going for the T-Mo one wouldn't be a very good choice.
Perhaps not. But it's up to him. We can only give him the facts.

I do not recommend you sgs2. I want to sell mine and buy galaxy nexus instead. For sgs2 there isn't fully working aosp ROM and it seems it never will be. I think pure Android nexuses are best choice and not by touchwiz destroyed phones like sgs2. It's my personnal opinion, someone may have different

SG2 is the beast !
I know the S2 is a great phone, Just wondering how's the front facing camera on the device? I know it's 2 Megapixels. Also easiest way to Unlock the bootloader, Flash custom roms.. and Root of course.
Thanks a lot!

Your profile says AT&T, and Boston, MA. Did you get this phone through AT&T? Or did you order it unlocked?
If you got it through AT&T, then you are in the wrong forum for your device. AT&T only carries a branded version of the S II, which is model number SGH-I777, or the Skyrocket, (LTE version of the S II) which is model number SGH-I727.
Each of those devices has their own forums.
If you are indeed a user of one of those devices, then by all means, do NOT USE any bootloaders, custom ROMs, or rooting methods from this (I9100) forum.
Surefire way to know what your model is, is to look on the label under the battery.

There is no diff B/w the I9100 and the I9100T model as far as hardware is concernd ma8, all the roms and kernel meant for I9100 will wrk on I9100T for u
regarding ur IMEI issue well u have to clarify the same with the Seller
If he IMEI blocks it after he sells it to you, it's a hassle to get it unblocked. You'd have to go thru dramas to prove who you are/that you're the rightful owner of the phone to the carrier who did the blocking.
Why would you be scared that he'd IMEI block it after he sells it to you tho ? Apart from ****s and giggles, doing so brings no benefit whatsoever to him.
The only major difference between the I9100 & the I9100T (I have one; Voda) is the output of the radio; the I9100T is designed to work better with 850MHz networks. Modems specifically for the I9100T (I.E modems supplied with stock roms issued by telcos who sell the I9100T) tend to work best with it so far as getting the best connectivity goes.
If your selling, why would you swap?
