Make sure your bootloader is locked, update will be available via PC Companion and Update Service, if you have original Gingerbread 2.3.4 firmware.
Root doesn't matter, you lose it anyway.
I was wondering, since my phone cannot be updated via OTA nor PC Companion... will I be able to flash the official ICS Rom via Flashtool without unlocking bootloader? It should be possible, shouldn't it?
Was about to ask the same question. I have 4.04 nordic and a brand new Orange locked handset. Dont want to unlock or root..just want ICS. Am I alright to use flashtools and the tft file?

ICS will be available only via PC Companion, when it will be available, which it is not yet.
Yes, you can flash it via Flashtool.

My friend had a locked Xperia X10 bought from UK
He unlocked it using SETool but is currently stuck on 2.1
Both PC-Companion and Update Service shows it doesn't need any update,it is updated to the latest version.
I can root it and update it but is there any other method of doing it easily ??

Hi, If you have xrec installed on your 2.1 android, then go for TEAM rom/ WB rom...I dont see any point in installing the stock as it s***s. Its darn slow/the music stutter/ no bravia engine/ gallery is slow/ no root/busybox...so Nah nah...go for a custom rom from xrec.

I juz got an update notification to .62 firmware.
is it safe to update using this? will I experience any bootloop or such if I use the update? anybody with my situation tried the OTA update?

Not 100% sure but you may unroot after updating. someone can confirm.
i have locked bootloader, so i don't know if there are problems with unlocked, but my neo was rooted on .42 and stay rooted after .62 ota update.
If you unlocked your bootloader via se official way then no you will brick your phone with a fota update, if you unlocked with setool2 paid for method then you should be fine, but i'm not sure about the setool1 method.
Why not flash with flashtool ?

Sure it will be unlocked.
The bootloader as nothing to do with the firmware.
To root you must to flash rootxperia.zip through recovery, it´s the easy way.

uninstall UpdateCenter.apk with titanium backup, or search for it with root explorer or any other explorer with root access.

I have a Neo bought unlocked with 2.3.3, I made OTA update and I briked my phone. After restore, first I flashed with a new 2.3.3 and after used x10 flash tool, I rooted with DoomLoRD_v4_ROOT. I received that is a new software update available, I was affraid to do it by OTA and I done with pc software update from SE. After update I still have superuser app but my neo is not rooted.
How can I root it again without any flashes or downgrade. Is out there any app working? I tried with Gingerbreak, SoperOneClick v2.3.3 and DoomLoRD_v4_ROOT, but no result.

How is you bootloader unlocked? Official way, s1tool or setool2?
And you can't root .62 without downgrading first to .42. But I guess that trick only works for bootloaders unlocked NOT BY OFFICIAL way, but still not sure, that's why I'm asking you.

Use Flashtool to put back the .42 or .58 software, root it, and then update via Update Center on the phone. After the update, the phone will be still rooted until you do a factory reset.
Search for [TUT] DIY Rooted 4.0.2.A.0.62 or newer LOCKED bootloader here

To be honest not sure about ota but pc comp. and seus will work. ota should work 99%.
locked or unlocked your still going to get it but probably before with unlocked boot loader because carrers will still need to push update not that's what's going to take the time

I found this on sony update......
"Make sure your device has the latest software so you can enjoy optimal performance and all of its features.

And here is my problem.
I have rooted device how do i update to 4.1.B.0.587 and keep my root?

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader then you can just update via seus without any problem but I'm sure you'll lose your root . If you have unlocked your bootloader the official way then seus itself won't allow you to update your device. It'll throw an error saying you've modified your firmware so it's not possible to get the update. If it's a fota update and you just have rooted your device (bootloader is LOCKED) then go ahead and update you'll just lose your root privileges. IF YOU HAVE UNLOCKED YOUR BOOTLOADER OFFICIALLY AND IT'S A FOTA UPDATE THEN PLEASE DON'T UPDATE YOUR DEVICE VIA FOTA IT'LL POSSIBLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE! Hmmmm i think i have bootloader locked.
I found some walkthrough how to root 2.3 then flash ICS over it and keep root priv.
Will find a post in my history how i did it and post back.
I used that link before search forum statment.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Sony offer ftf files for download...

The easiest way is to install a kernel that auto-roots e.g. the rage kernel and then when using flashtool select to exclude the kernel. It'll update everything and root any firmware
